Punty's Punts
Race type: MAIDEN, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, midfield runners get the sit, backmarkers need a late unfolding
Punty read: This one's a slow-burn maiden, so it's less about sprinting away and more about who gets the right trip with no drama. Devil Wings doesn't have to do everything from barrier 2, he just needs to be present early enough to follow the tempo, then he can lift when gaps show. The danger is the midfielders who look like they'll be in the mix if the pace stays honest, but if it's truly slow, you want a horse that can take advantage without hunting for lanes the whole way.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Devil Wings (No.1) — $3.20 / $1.45 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$28.60
Prob 20.3% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.83x
Why Barrier 2 on a slow map is gold, he gets a stalking run, then the finish gives him room to strike.
2. Stunning Future (No.9) — $4.60 / $1.72 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.63x
Why A real chance — but at $1.72 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Billapaloola (No.6) — $4.60 / $1.72 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.82x
Why Backmarker profile is fine, but the win value is not there enough for me to play it win-only.
Roughie: Landing Gear (No.2) — $10.00 / $2.75 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.12x
Why He's more for place pressure and value in the right conditions, but today I want fewer moving parts.
Race type: MAIDEN, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, lots of on-pacer pressure, midfield can still land if they time it
Punty read: At Hawkesbury over 1100m, it's a sprint where you either get a clear run at the right time or you get parked and bullied. Excels has that right blend of early speed and the profile of a horse that can keep running without the drama. Stromatolite looks like the kind who can sit close enough, Alpha Zeta can get cheeky if they go hard enough, but my main angle is backing the one the market and map both respect.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Excels (No.5) — $3.30 / $1.40 🏆 4TH
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 26.0% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.32x
Why On-pacer who should get the run, tongue tie on first time is the sort of tweak that turns "close" into "right".
2. Stromatolite (No.9) — $4.20 / $1.60 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.5% | Place: 59.1% | Value: 1.30x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Alpha Zeta (No.3) — $3.50 / $1.50 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.81x
Why Too short for my liking at this grade, and I don't want to double-up on similar outcomes.
Roughie: Edberg (No.8) — $9.00 / $2.50 🏆 9TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.8% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.66x
Why Needs things to break his way, and I'm not betting a whole day on "if only" scenarios.
Race type: GROUP 1, 1800m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Van Hoven's the leader type with cover likely behind
Punty read: This is the classic 1800m maiden where the leader can steal it if the pack doesn't pressure properly. Van Hoven is the one who can put them under the pump from the front, and at Hawkesbury that sort of control often converts. Balmain Warrior is the main danger if he gets the right run without being parked too long. What She's Having has the staying-type profile to hit the line hard, but if Van Hoven finds a rhythm early, the others are chasing a train.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Van Hoven (No.5) — $2.00 / $1.13 🏆 2ND
Bet $7.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 49.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.22x
Why Leader profile, proper tempo for him, and he should get first run at the line without the "where's the gap?" panic.
2. Balmain Warrior (No.1) — $8.00 / $2.35 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.18x
Why A real chance — but at $2.35 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. What She's Having (No.7) — $8.50 / $2.15 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.10x
Why She'll likely be there for a while, but I'd rather back the control runner.
Roughie: Scoish Maloish (No.9) — $15.00 / $3.00 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.5% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.64x
Why Needs cover and luck in a pace scenario where the leader might never fully stop.
Race type: CLASS 1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, midfield build, the last 400m matters most
Punty read: When the pace is slow at 1600m, you get those races where a horse's second gear matters more than their first. Switch On maps to get that perfect transition, sit close enough without overreaching, then pounce late. Ouragan is the big threat, because he's the one who can get rolling when everyone's still pretending they have time. C'mon Flyer could pop into the right spot early, but the slow tempo usually punishes the ones who need sprinting positions, it's about timing and straight running.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.68 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Switch On (No.6) — $1.80 / $1.22 🏆 6TH
Bet $13.68 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$13.68
Prob 41.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.91x
Why Slow tempo suits him, and the way he's profiled screams "right trip, then finish".
2. Ouragan (No.4) — $3.50 / $1.75 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 29.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.24x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. He's Got Grunt (No.2) — $8.00 / $2.70 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.14x
Why Could run into a cheque, but I'm not overloading into a slow-map midpack.
Roughie: C'mon Flyer (No.1) — $12.00 / $3.70 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 1.20x
Why He needs a very specific run and the sort of room that tends to disappear in slow races.
Race type: MAIDEN, 1000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, 1000m means positioning is everything, then it's sprint to the line
Punty read: 1000m maidens at Hawkesbury are like a bar fight, everybody looks tough until someone gets a better angle. Revolina is flying at these conditions and her form reads like she's ready to hit the line again. Lions Eyes is a live threat with that "show up in the final furlong" energy, and Regal is the one who can keep finding. Water City is the roughie type, but my job is to back the most likely winner and let the place players chase their own luck.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Revolina (No.9) — $3.80 / $1.62 🏆 WINNER
Bet $12.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$33.60
Prob 27.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.59x
Why The profile says she's the right horse at the right moment, and at 1000m that means less running into trouble.
2. Lions Eyes (No.1) — $4.00 / $1.62 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.8% | Place: 52.3% | Value: 0.89x
Why A real chance — but at $1.62 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Regal (No.8) — $4.00 / $1.50 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.9% | Place: 59.1% | Value: 1.14x
Why Value is there, but I'm not paying extra for coverage when the main win bet is on.
Roughie: Water City (No.10) — $34.00 / $3.30 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.2% | Place: 24.3% | Value: 1.05x
Why Needs luck from the back end of the sprint, value is real but I'm prioritising safer shapes.
Race type: BENCHMARK 64, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, leader types set it up and the sprint finish punishes off-balance runners
Punty read: Youre Not The King is the headline act. Barrier 5, leader map, and all the gear tweaks look like they want him sharp and present. At 1100m, if he gets into his rhythm early, the rest have to do it the hard way. Bengal and Master Yoda are your place and second-line dangers, especially if the pace is pressured and the finish is a sprint for lanes. But I want the horse who turns it into a race he's comfortable winning.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Youre Not The King (No.4) — $2.25 / $1.22 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$13.12
Prob 45.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.32x
Why Leader profile plus the gate position means he can control the speed and run his own race.
2. Bengal (No.2) — $6.50 / $2.20 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.3% | Place: 53.9% | Value: 1.36x
Why A real chance — but at $2.20 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Master Yoda (No.8) — $7.50 / $2.50 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.3% | Place: 53.6% | Value: 1.37x
Why He can run on, but he's the type that's better as a support runner than a main win stab.
Roughie: Viipuri (No.10) — $10.00 / $2.85 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.9% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.14x
Why He needs timing and a clean run, and those are the first things to vanish at Hawkesbury in a sprint.
Race type: BENCHMARK 64, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, leader types get first crack, midfielders need a gap
Punty read: Brave Xena is the horse I want on my ticket. He's the sort who can do the running without being forced into ridiculous speed, and with the way these races set up, that's exactly how you nick the win when the others are still finding balance. Excelluna brings the best challenger angle from midfield, and Hellabella is the grinder who can hit the line hard. But the big story here is Brave Xena's profile, he looks like he's going to have his say right through the straight.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Brave Xena (No.1) — $2.00 / $1.10 🏆 2ND
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 40.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.01x
Why He's got the right racing pattern, and from barrier 3 he can tuck in, then launch when the field gets loose.
2. Excelluna (No.5) — $6.00 / $1.82 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.40x
Why A real chance — but at $1.82 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Hellabella (No.3) — $4.80 / $1.65 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.0% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.08x
Why He can grind into the finish, but I'm not paying the extra risk when Brave Xena's the best fit.
Roughie: Dietrich (No.2) — $10.00 / $2.45 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 34.2% | Value: 1.09x
Why Needs a dream run from midfield, and that's how you end up donating your winnings.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 6,4,2 / 9,8,1,10 / 4,2,8,10 / 1,5,3,2 (192 combos x $0.10 = $20.00) -- 10% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Van Hoven (Race 3, No.5)✗ — $1.82
2 - Switch On (Race 4, No.6)✗ — $1.67
3 - Youre Not The King (Race 6, No.4)✓ Won — $1.35

Selections
Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Hawkesbury on a Good 4 with the cloud doing that lazy fade, so the track's sitting there begging for fast sections and smart positions. No rain, rail +2m, and with that sort of look, the leaders get the first bite at it, then the classiest sprinters and the ones who can roll in the pocket do the rest. Today's not a day for overthinking, it's a day for getting on the right horse at the right time, then acting like you planned it all along.
My big spine is pretty plain, and that's the beauty. Race 3 Van Hoven looks like the one to control it. Race 6 Youre Not The King should get his soft run and turn it into a job. Race 4 Switch On has the turn-of-foot angle and the numbers back the way he profiles. When those three line up, the day usually pays you back for being ruthless with your heart.
And yeah, there's roughie land too, but we're not doing that $60 "feel" stuff. We're backing the horses with a clear race shape. Hawkesbury sprints and milers can punish the wrong tactics fast, so if you miss the map early, you're basically watching the race with your wallet already in the bin.
Meet Snapshot
Track: Hawkesbury, 7 race card (Good 4)
Rail: +2m 1100m -450m, True remainder
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play fast, rail-savy)
Weather: Cloud clearing, 19°C, humidity 50%, wind 14km/h S (watch for gusts, but no rain)
Early lane guess: leaders to midfield, pocket runners keep winning
Tempo profile: Genuine speed early, then a controlled grind for the last 200 to 300m
Jockeys to follow:
Chad Schofield: shows up with multiple chances, and isn't scared of work
Reece Jones: persistent place-getter, he keeps finding the right lane
Tommy Berry: best pair of hands in the building when the race gets busy
Stables to respect:
Bjorn Baker (2 runners): puts them in the right spots, especially in the shorter races
Marc Chevalier (2 runners): tidy strike rate, and moves well when the market supports
Richard & Will Freedman (2 runners): live as anything for maidens, especially when gear switches hit
Punty's take:
Hawkesbury's rail is helping, which means the "just get to the front" types get a little more respect today. But with the tempo not screaming chaotic, you can win without being first on the speed, you just can't be stuck too far off and wide all day like a goose in traffic.
Race 1 is maiden chaos, slow pace, and a couple of debutants who could pop up like surprise guests on a cooking show. I'm siding with Devil Wings, because his profile says "get positioned early enough, then pounce". In these slow-map maidens, the winner is usually the one who doesn't waste ground.
Race 2 is set up for a sprint where the on-pacers can do the damage, and Excels looks like the honest run they want. Race 3, that's where the day flips from "nice bet" to "main event". Van Hoven's drawn to do exactly what you want at 1800m, pick up the bridle early, and then they've got to go around him.
What it means for you:
If you're playing it smart, you back your likely leaders in the spots where the track rewards forward movement, then you keep the roughies for value plays where the map gives them a real route to winning.
So, be aggressive in Race 3 and Race 6, and trust the tactical profile in Race 4. Those are my "don't talk yourself out of it" races. The other legs are more about protecting yourself with place-minded thinking, because sprints on a rail can turn into a game of lanes and luck in the last 100m.
Now get in, get paid, and if your mate says "wait for a better price", tell him to go bet on vibes. You're here for shape and intent.
