Punty's Punts
Race type: Benchmark 66, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, expected midfield stalling, backmarkers need the sprint lane
Punty read: This is a four-horse benchmark 66, so the pace doesn't get to do much fancy stuff. Prince Is Game (No.5) is the one I want, because the run pattern suits, and when the tempo is slow you get to use that one clean burst instead of fighting for scraps. Purple Kitty (No.6) and Pelevecchio (No.4) are both the kind of runners that can hang around for a placing, but win is harder unless the front holds and the middle gets late room. Thinkin' Bo You (No.7) is the roughie mindset play, because if the race bunches up and the tempo truly collapses late, backmarkers can absolutely hit the gaps.
Top 3 + Roughie ($6.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Prince Is Game (No.5) — $3.20 / $1.40 🏆 WINNER
Bet $6.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$13.20
Prob 38.8% | Place: 2.2% | Value: 1.44x
Why Perfectly placed in the map, and he's the market's main story for a reason.
2. Purple Kitty (No.6) — $3.70 / $1.25 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.5% | Place: 2.2% | Value: 0.91x
Why A real chance — but at $1.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Pelevecchio (No.4) — $6.00 / $1.90 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.1% | Place: 2.2% | Value: 1.46x
Why Soft-track capable and has some sectional snarl, just needs a cleaner run.
Roughie: Thinkin' Bo You (No.7) — $12.00 / $2.90 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 2.2% | Value: 1.20x
Why If the race stays slow and the gaps appear late, backmarkers can kick hard through sticky ground.
Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, speed likely holds with sprint chaos at the top
Punty read: 1000m and Soft 7, so this is about who gets a clean rhythm and who doesn't get swallowed on the turn. Seaton Moon (No.5) is the pick because she can hit the ground running in this setup, and she's far from a "one-run" type at this level. Cerano Magic (No.1) is the gear-changes angle, new barrier blanket and extra kit for a reason, but she's drawn back so you need a smooth run and clear air. Cecil Peak (No.10) is a live outsider if the sprint falls apart and he finds a rail trip. Must Diamond (No.4) is the roughie if you want to gamble like a main character, he can absolutely sneak into it late if the speed burns and the inside opens.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Seaton Moon (No.5) — $2.90 / $1.45 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$28.50
Prob 25.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.00x
Why The sprint map suits, and she looks like the most straightforward "get to the line" horse.
2. Cerano Magic (No.1) — $3.90 / $1.62 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.2% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.13x
Why A real chance — but at $1.62 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Cecil Peak (No.10) — $7.00 / $2.40 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.09x
Why Place leverage screams, yet win is trickier with the sprint pressure.
Roughie: Must Diamond (No.4) — $14.50 / $3.40 🏆 7TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.5% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 1.01x
Why If the leaders misjudge the kick in Soft 7, he's got the length to swoop.
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, with a leader likely to set it up and others stalking
Punty read: Rupertano (No.7) is the boss if he gets to do it his way. This is the sort of 1400m where a leader can win ugly, and with Soft ground it rewards the horse that can keep momentum through the slog. Hellfighter (No.2) is next best as the stalking punch, while What A Gent (No.9) is the danger if he times the run and gets the lane. Dynamic Diva (No.13) is your roughie for the "maybe the favourite is overrun" scenario, but at the price you back her for value on the day, not for certainty.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Rupertano (No.7) — $1.95 / $1.14 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$12.35
Prob 45.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.25x
Why Maps like the leader and has the profile to hold form through Soft 7.
2. Hellfighter (No.2) — $7.00 / $2.30 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.78x
Why A real chance — but at $2.30 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. What A Gent (No.9) — $13.00 / $3.20 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 2.20x
Why The timing and lane look right, value is better than many, just not the main act.
Roughie: Dynamic Diva (No.13) — $11.00 / $2.80 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.6% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.82x
Why Back her if the race turns into a sprint for the corner and the backmarkers get room.
Race type: Class 1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, everyone wants the same pocket behind the speed
Punty read: Purple Haze (No.12) is the main story, and the market agrees. Soft 7 at 1600 is about getting into it cleanly, not launching too early. Whoopi Do (No.9) has the best "run-on and survive" profile, and Fly The Wind (No.14) is the kind of horse that can place via sectionals and late momentum. Russian Escape (No.3) and Cats Quarters (No.15) are more win-or-bust today, especially if they're still looking for the gap in the straight.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Purple Haze (No.12) — $3.20 / $1.50 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$23.10
Prob 36.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.44x
Why Strong win profile with the map, and Soft 7 suits the way she grinds.
2. Whoopi Do (No.9) — $8.00 / $2.65 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 2.11x
Why A real chance — but at $2.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Fly The Wind (No.14) — $5.70 / $1.80 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.94x
Why Has credentials, just not enough value today.
Roughie: Cats Quarters (No.15) — $23.00 / $3.90 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.9% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.84x
Why Only if the race goes strange and the late lane opens up for a swooper.
Race type: Open, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, you want to be close enough to hit the line first
Punty read: This is a 1000m where the best horse wins, but only if the worst traffic stays away. Speck (No.1) is the one I want, drawn OK and capable of carrying momentum. Grassburn (No.3) is the speed-and-strength runner, but he's paying for the fact he's too short on his win chances. Pratt (No.2) is the honest on-pace type, while Stupendo (No.7) is your "might find trouble, then still runs on" value. Cool Fizz (No.8) is the roughie, and if he's better than his price suggests, he can carve through Soft 7 like it owes him money.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Speck (No.1) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P)
Prob 25.4% | Place: 60.1% | Value: 1.13x
Why Drawn to receive cover and can punch through the wet without losing rhythm.
2. Grassburn (No.3) — $4.40 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.1% | Place: 58.8% | Value: 1.01x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Pratt (No.2) — $10.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.1% | Place: 60.7% | Value: 1.92x
Why Solid, but the ticket's already doing the heavy lifting with Speck.
Roughie: Cool Fizz (No.8) — $14.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.5% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.91x
Why If the pace collapses and he finds clearance, he gets a crack at the finish.
Race type: Open, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, leaders should get a few favours early
Punty read: Show 'em Howl (No.2) is exactly the sort of runner you want in an open 1300 with genuine pace. He's meant to sit closer and keep the momentum, and with Soft 7 you do not want to be stuck too far back when the kick comes. Zaru (No.1) is your next best as the fitter type that can slot into the race. Zoucratic (No.5) is a value swing because the form and profile can absolutely crack a wider field. Denial (No.8) is the roughie, if the leaders press and then stop, he'll be the one peeling late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Show 'em Howl (No.2) — $2.60 / $1.35
Bet $15.00 Win
Prob 39.1% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.28x
Why Pace map suits, and he's built to keep going when the track is tacky.
2. Zaru (No.1) — $3.50 / $1.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.66x
Why A real chance — but at $1.45 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Zoucratic (No.5) — $7.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.14x
Why He can run a big race, just not the safest win profile versus the pace leader.
Roughie: Get Some Fun (No.4) — $12.00 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.3% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.95x
Why If the pace gets messy, on-pacers can still be there when others stall.
Race type: Open, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, a genuine battle for position in the run
Punty read: Fierceness (No.4) is the most likely winner on my watch, even with the Soft ground. He's the kind that can sustain a run when the rest go into mud-mode. Montpellier (No.3) and Sosino (No.1) are the real dangers if the leaders trade punches and start finding sand in the final 300. I've Bean Tryin' (No.7) is the roughie that can absolutely bolt into a place, especially if there's any slipstream advantage to grab. Spicy Lu (No.2) is interesting too, but I'm sticking with the cleaner win logic on Fierceness.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Fierceness (No.4) — $4.40 / $1.80
Bet $15.00 Win
Prob 19.3% | Place: 69.7% | Value: 1.05x
Why Better balance of staying power and ground handling, and he can keep his momentum.
2. Montpellier (No.3) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.19x
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Sosino (No.1) — $6.40 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.0% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.16x
Why Major player in the finish, but I want the main win line.
Roughie: Creative Righteous (No.11) — $11.50 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.98x
Why If the race opens up late, she's got the gear to hit the line hard.
Race type: Class 2, 1250m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, on-pacers need to hold position through the soft
Punty read: This is a proper sprint-miler where Santatime (No.5) is the logical win, because she's the one that can keep running through the turns and into the straight. Broken Wings (No.6) is the value place threat, and Cool Az Aletta (No.9) is the one to consider if Blinkers OFF helps her handle the soft better. Coco Dreaming (No.8) is the roughie, if she times it and gets a lane, she's live at the price. Maracaibo Sun (No.3) is the pace-adjacent danger, but I prefer the runner with the more reliable finish rhythm.
Top 3 + Roughie ($6.50 pool)
1. Santatime (No.5) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet $6.50 Win
Prob 21.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.98x
Why Proven to run the line, and Soft 7 is the sort of ground where rhythm matters.
2. Broken Wings (No.6) — $7.50 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.0% | Place: 45.1% | Value: 1.28x
Why A real chance — but at $2.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Cool Az Aletta (No.9) — $7.50 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.9% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 1.17x
Why Value on the win side, but the win route still runs through the top pick.
Roughie: Coco Dreaming (No.8) — $8.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.02x
Why If the pace stutters, she can pounce through the gaps late.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Taree on a Soft 7 where the track's chewing up chances like it's got a personal vendetta, and the rail's True so there's no hiding behind geometry. We've got slow-ish tempos in the longer races, more sprint pressure in the short stuff, and plenty of backmarkers that can still sneak a cheque if the pace does the right thing. It's the sort of day where you either get paid early, or you spend the rest of the afternoon philosophising about why you listened to your mate.
My spine today is clean and simple, three horses I'm backing to run out the story. Then we sprinkle in a couple of roughie scares, because Soft 7 is basically roulette, but with better scenery and worse decisions. Big pools where it matters, protect yourself where it doesn't, and don't get cute in races that are clearly trying to be boring.
And yeah, I know, you degens want chaos. I do too. We're just doing it with a plan, like burglars with a spreadsheet.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Soft 7, 1000-2000m card
Rail: True
Official going: Soft 7 (expected to play closer to rail-saving, running on, and pace-sensitive)
Weather: Shower or two, 17°C, humidity 77%, gusts 37km/h, feels like 13.8°C (watch for the track to be a bit dead and sticky)
Early lane guess: Quieter, more conservative races early, then the sprints start throwing punches
Tempo profile: Slow in the middle distance ones, more genuine pace in the sprints, so map matters
Jockeys to follow:
Luke Rolls: Gets plenty of chances across the meeting, and he's not allergic to doing the work early
Zac Wadick: Sharp hands, strong at getting horses to do the right thing in the wet
Coriah Keatings: Has that 'no panic, still wins' vibe when things bunch up
Stables to respect:
A P Ball (8 runners): Shows up with runners that are ready to go, even when the market is quiet
P Cheers (7 runners): Often has them suited to track conditions, especially when there's carryover fitness in the map
Matthew Kelley (5 runners): Nice hit-rate for punching out races where tempo and ground matter
Punty's take:
Soft 7 at Taree is usually where front-runners get punished, but only when the speed is actually being cooked. If it's just a slow crawl, the whole field stays leggy, and the "one-run" horses can still pocket into the money. That's why I like the sharper leaders in the short races, and the right midfield stalking shapes in the longer ones.
Race 1 is a tiny field, so it's basically a chess match with only four pieces. I'm backing the horse that has the better profile to get the run it needs, and I'll use the second and third picks as protection rather than trying to be a hero.
Then Race 2 through to Race 4, it's all about Maiden timing and clean running into the straight. The wet makes interference hurt more, so the horses with the most reliable map and gear changes get a leg up. After that, the sprint races start demanding position early, and you can't be fluffed wide in Soft 7, the surface just swallows extra ground.
What it means for you:
Be brave in the races where the pace setup matches the horse's style, and don't overthink the ones that are clearly trying to run in a straight line. In the sprints, I'm prioritising "on pace" maps and the horses that can hold their rhythm, because Soft 7 is where timing matters more than raw speed.
For the betting game plan:
- Put your money into the three big winners I've locked below, that's your base hit.
- In each race, use the Top 3 properly, then add the roughie like you'd lace a bit of hot sauce onto a meal, too much and you regret it, a touch and it makes it interesting.
Rightio, let's get into the meat.
