2am in my brain version: I'm chasing the races where the pace is doing the heavy lifting, and letting the market do some of the talking. We've got a strong spine across the day, and it's built on three proper battlers, the ones you circle before the coffee goes cold. From there, it's chaos management, because Soft 5 at Muswellbrook can flip like Channel Nine after sport.

Punty's take:

This meeting's got a few "blinkers and bits" jobs, and on a Soft 5 that usually means one of two things, either they're trying to keep a horse focused, or they're making a horse run with a plan. You can see it in the maiden handicaps and the Country Boosted stuff. When the pace is genuine, it sets up for either the leader to hang on or the grinder to roll forward and get first crack at the last 100m.

The other thing, the rail's True, so you're not automatically guaranteed a death-to-the-line save on the inside. What you want is either a horse that travels into the contest early, or one that's naturally suited to coming off the bridle late. That's why I'm not panicking over the roughies, I'm giving them their lane, the one where the speed collapses and they get a go at the finish.

What it means for you:

Be aggressive in the races where the top end is drawn into position or has pace on its side. Your "banker material" today is the one that just keeps giving you the correct part of the track at the right time, you can feel it in your gut when the map lines up. Then in the bigger chaos races, you play them like a deck of cards, respect the favourite, but protect yourself with the runners that look like they can be two jumps away from trouble.

So game plan is simple: lock the spine, then sprinkle the roughies on the races where the price is still telling the truth. If you're waiting for the perfect value, you'll end up doing laps around the betting ring like a ratbag looking for an ATM. Bet smart, bet with intent, and don't get cute when the leader's doing the work.

Map & tempo: Slow pace, so it's a patience test, the danger is getting held up in the last straight
Punty read: This is a "who gets clear" maiden. The track's Soft 5, and at 1750m the race can turn into a trolley problem in the straight. Zorko (No.3) is the obvious one to keep safe, he's on the right side of the speed and the market's already put the hand up. Gemtiki (No.4) looks like the value play to me because she's had the run misfortune, gets the opportunity to land closer, and she can close when there's room. Honeyhill (No.5) is the right type of place chance when you want someone to keep grinding past tired ones.

Supido Star (No.3) is the other one, he's genuine and has shown he can run the trip, but the big question is whether he gets a clean run behind the speed.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - The Soft 5 speed trap
In the sprints and the shorter trips, the horses that can stay on the speed and not get stuck in the mud early are the ones that keep paying. Every time someone's stuck behind, they lose two lengths without even trying.

2 - The gear moves are talking
When you see first-time blinkers, it usually means the trainer wants the horse to hold a racing rhythm, not just chase. That's why I'm taking the winners in the races where the market has already nodded at the idea.

3 - Real danger, fake value
Roughies today aren't random. They're mostly the horses that pick up clear late when the leaders go into survival mode. If the tempo blows out, you'll see them running on like they just discovered a shortcut, if the tempo collapses.
