Rightio Loose Units, Narromine with the Heavy 9 nastiness is the kind of day where you either get home by the straight, or you spend the last 20 minutes yelling at the screen like it owes you money. The rail is +4m from 900m to 300m, so if you're still chasing on the wrong part of the track late, that's on you, legends. This card screams pace and position early, then patience and balance when it turns slick.

Legit story of the day, Race 1 to 5 is built like a pressure cooker. Big early speed types set it up, but Heavy 9 punishes the ones that get too keen and too wide. I'm going to be leaning into place value and the proper map jobs, then when we hit the mid-meeting opens, I'll grab the extra stripe of chaos where it's been priced like a dream.

And yeah, I've locked in a Big 3 + Multi spine, because if we're going to do this stupid thing, we do it with a plan, not vibes.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Heavy 9, 800-1600m card
Rail: +4m 900m-300m, True Remainder
Official going: Heavy 9 (expected to play Wet-speed leaning, leader and stalker friendly)
Weather: Sunny, 2°C, humidity 100%, wind 14km/h SE (watch for slow early pace, soft finishing kick)
Early lane guess: Tight-ish up front, then wider running is where the late grubber value comes from
Tempo profile: Hotter when the right speed's in the right lanes, then grind city, you can feel it in your bones
Jockeys to follow:
Diego Montes de Oca: sharp on track, and he's riding speed when it's on offer
Clayton Gallagher: jumps on the right maps, and he doesn't panic when it's heavy
Liam Blanch: looks like a "sits and finishes" type when the ground is holding up
Stables to respect:
Connie Greig (6 runners): keeps turning up runners that can hit the line in heavy conditions
Brett Thompson (6 runners): tends to have them ready for the prep, especially on the shorter trips
C Lundholm (4 runners): strong across the card, and when the map suits, they don't waste it

Punty's take:

Heavy 9 at Narromine is where horses either glide through it or they get bogged. The first question is always, who's actually going to run through the race, who's going to be spinning wheels three wide, and who's got the gears to keep building once the track starts taking repayments. You want the ones that can hold a spot close to the action, or the proper leaders that can keep their rhythm.

I've got three "do the job" targets today. Race 1 is a chaos handicap of maiden types, but you can still find the best map and the best spot in the betting. Race 2 is a class 1 plate where the pace is slow and the inside stuff matters more, then Race 5 flips into a maiden plate where the leaders look like they'll get every chance to do the heavy lifting.

What it means for you is simple: I'm not falling in love with the shortest-priced favourites blindly. I'm taking the ones that match the Heavy 9 tempo, then using the place angle where the winner is likely, but value is still hiding.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Best Defence (Race 1, No.11) — $3.15
Why Bubble cheeker first time and ear muffs pre-race first time, she's built to park on pace and not get bullied by the wet.
2 - Our Dandi Angel (Race 2, No.6) — $2.56
Why Slow tempo race, he's got the midfield position that turns into a real finishing run when everyone else is still feeling the track.
3 - Poetic Way (Race 5, No.4) — $2.17
Why True pace role, plus the sort of profile that handles Heavy better than the "pretty outsider" types when the race tightens late.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~17.00 = ~170.00 collect

Race 1 – Chaos Cup, Wet-Track Dandy Duel

Race type: MAIDEN Hcp, 800m
Map & tempo: Hot Pace, leaders engaged early

Punty read:

Dream Invader and Miss Strategic are trying to set the tone, but Heavy 9 at 800m is where you get punished if you do too much too soon. I'm backing Best Defence because the gear change is designed to keep her switched on and straight, and her speed-map says she can stay in the lane battle rather than getting churned out wider. Dream Invader is the danger for the exact same reason, he might just bolt in and keep finding while others wilt.

Top 3 + Roughie ($25.00 pool)

1. Best Defence (No.11) — $3.15 / $1.52
Bet $19.00 Win, return $59.85
Prob 26.8% | Place: 66.5% | Value: 1.26x
Why Pace is hot, she's on the right side of the speed, and the first-up gear is all about handling the heavy and sticking around.
2. Dream Invader (No.1) — $5.10 / $2.00
Bet $6.00 Place, return $12.00
Prob 16.7% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.19x
Why Can lead or stalk from barrier 11, and when the market drifts you have to respect it, someone's seen the right run.
3. Mazort (No.5) — $4.30 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.5% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.20x
Why Backmarker profile suits Heavy when the front collapses, but place value is a bit funky today.

Roughie: Aerialize (No.7) — $9.40 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 26.8% | Value: 1.09x
Why If the leaders melt down and she can slot and save ground, she can still sneak a place, but winning is the long ask.

Race 2 – Class 1, Slow-Pace Pencil Push

Race type: C1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, pace adv around several mid-runners

Punty read:

This is one of those 1600m races where the track feels slow until it suddenly isn't. Our Dandi Angel maps like he's going to get a nice position and start inching forward before the real sprint starts. Northern Exposure is the market threat because he's got a real look of class and he's been pushed in the betting, but he can also be a "grind and run out of petrol" type in heavy if he's too far out from the leaders. Snow Dog brings a genuine staying-on angle, Litlfela and Share Our Secret are the usual class 1 place magnets.

Top 3 + Roughie ($25.00 pool)

1. Our Dandi Angel (No.6) — $2.56 / $1.75
Bet $21.00 Win, return $53.76
Prob 35.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.55x
Why Slow tempo, midfield can travel, then he hits the line hard without needing to do anything heroic early.
2. Share Our Secret (No.10) — $2.46 / $1.70
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.80
Prob 15.7% | Place: 48.4% | Value: 0.66x
Why On pace and in a race that won't sprint early, she can hold position and pick up pieces.
3. Northern Exposure (No.2) — $2.96 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.8% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.60x
Why He's got the right trip, but place value is a bit thin for how he's being seen today.

Roughie: Snow Dog (No.4) — $9.50 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 1.42x
Why If the leaders go a slow-motion thriller and then pop late, he's the type to go past them with his better finishing.

Race 3 – Maiden 1100, Real Pace Gang War

Race type: MAIDEN Hcp, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace

Punty read:

Mega Pixel has the speed and the barrier, and in a heavy 1100 you want the horse that can stay involved rather than chasing wet ground battles from the back. Best Defence is the grinder that can pick up if the front bunch staggers early. Meldirer is there because the trials and prep say he's not a complete throwaway, and Heavy 9 means these maidens can improve just from handling the surface.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool, WATCH ONLY)

1. Mega Pixel (No.6) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet $12.00 Each Way ($6.00W + $6.00P), return $22.20 (wins) / $9.90 (places)
Prob 18.8% | Place: 50.5% | Value: 1.14x
Why On pace and can keep using it, this is exactly the kind of race where a speed profile turns into a line.
2. Best Defence (No.18) — $5.10 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.54x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Meldirer (No.5) — $4.90 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.9% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.85x
Why Place odds look a little too "hope-based", I want the EW on Mega Pixel instead.

Roughie: Flo Jo The Eskimo (No.10) — $9.40 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.87x
Why If the pace collapses he can swoop, but he needs everything to fall his way.

Race 4 – Bm66, Gear Up and Grind On

Race type: BENCHMARK 66, 800m
Map & tempo: Hot Pace

Punty read:

800m on Heavy 9 is savage, it turns races into tug-of-war maths. Blue De Beers looks dangerous because he's got the speed and is already short, but Capital Mac at $8.50 has the better "this could actually go" profile. Kevin is a live place play when they get bunched, and Denman Force is the roughie option if the early speed forces the others to work in the slop too long.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Capital Mac (No.2) — $8.50 / $2.90
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $63.75 (wins) / $21.75 (places)
Prob 11.6% | Place: 29.2% | Value: 1.91x
Why Roughie guard, at this price he's not the one I'm staking over the top of the place routes.
2. Blue De Beers (No.8) — $1.79 / $1.37
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.0% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.38x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Kevin (No.13) — $7.50 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 37.4% | Value: 1.50x
Why Worth a look, but place band isn't screaming profitable with the way today is shaping.

Roughie: Denman Force (No.9) — $10.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.79x
Why If the leaders overdo it early, he's the "come get me" runner who might grab the line.

Race 5 – Maiden 1300, The Heavy-Track Route to Joy

Race type: MAIDEN Plate, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace

Punty read:

Poetic Way is the headline because in slow 1300s you get the ideal run, you don't have to sprint early to survive, you just save ground and then apply pressure. Bloomin' Hell is the other big threat, she's got the sort that can keep picking at them on heavy. Easy Trapezee is the value angle, and when you see the way the market respects the right types even on debut preps, you don't have to overthink him.

Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)

1. Poetic Way (No.4) — $2.17 / $1.55
Bet $20.00 Win, return $43.40
Prob 30.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.07x
Why He gets the right tempo, and that kind of profile wins more wet 1300s than punters want to admit.
2. Bloomin' Hell (No.8) — $2.47 / $1.70
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.80
Prob 18.9% | Place: 57.9% | Value: 1.13x
Why Keeps finding on the heavy, and with a slow pace, her closing run gets to be a proper one.
3. Easy Trapezee (No.2) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.26x
Why Big value but I'm not stacking place insurance on the rank 3 band today.

Roughie: Argyle Springs (No.14) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 1.32x
Why If the leaders stumble and the race turns into a scramble late, he can hit the gaps.

Race 6 – Class 1 1200, Colly Blue Must Hold the Line

Race type: C1, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace

Punty read:

This one is all about who can keep their momentum on the slick heavy surface. Colly Blue is the type to stay involved without having to do the impossible, and Sellicks Beach is the danger with the way she's been moving in prep. Quasimoto is the value roughie if they start slowing down mid-race and it becomes a finishing sprint.

Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)

1. Colly Blue (No.7) — $2.36 / $1.65
Bet $6.00 Win, return $14.16
Prob 19.5% | Place: 59.0% | Value: 0.83x
Why On the right end of the tempo, and she's set up to avoid the backmarker traffic problems.
2. Sellicks Beach (No.5) — $2.86 / $1.90
Bet $2.50 Place, return $4.75
Prob 17.5% | Place: 49.4% | Value: 0.91x
Why If it's a grind, she's a place-getter all day, just needs to stay on the right bit of track.
3. Panelli (No.4) — $3.06 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.57x
Why The pace might be kind, but win and place price shape is too punter-hostile.

Roughie: Quasimoto (No.2) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.9% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.44x
Why If he gets a lane and the race turns into "who survives the heavy" he can run a big one.

Race 7 – Bm58, 1300 with the Real Competitive Heart

Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace

Punty read:

Moon Zone and Honey Slider are built for this sort of genuine speed race, because it doesn't allow them to get buried. Mrs Bull is the danger if the leaders go too hard and she finds the right transition spot. Yiasou is there as a stylish runner, but on Heavy 9 you want horses that can keep building late, not just lead until they get swallowed.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool, WATCH ONLY)

1. Moon Zone (No.3) — $5.10 / $2.00
Bet $12.00 Each Way ($6.00W + $6.00P), return $30.60 (wins) / $12.00 (places)
Prob 15.0% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.13x
Why Genuine pace helps, he should get running room and then keep pushing through the slog.
2. Honey Slider (No.6) — $6.20 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.20x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Mrs Bull (No.5) — $5.10 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 29.5% | Value: 0.74x
Why She's got a place case, but the winner odds just don't feel juicy enough.

Roughie: Sabatina (No.9) — $9.40 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 32.8% | Value: 1.45x
Why Needs a little chaos, if the race breaks up he can hit the finish like a side quest.

Race 8 – Narromine Cup, 1600 Big Boy Battles

Race type: Open, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace

Punty read:

This Cup is about who sits closest to the real speed without getting stuck. Prince Of Sorts is the market brain, he's got the speed but also carries the burden of being the favourite. Stockholm is a live stalker who can benefit from Heavy 9 grinding and keeping the kick going. Macleay is the other one, because he's got that "workman" profile that can keep making ground when others stop.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Prince Of Sorts (No.2) — $2.57 / $1.70
Bet $15.00 Win, return $38.55
Prob 22.5% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.90x
Why Favourite for a reason, and on this tempo he can control the race without having to sprint early.
2. Stockholm (No.3) — $6.20 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 42.1% | Value: 1.44x
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Macleay (No.7) — $7.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.44x
Why Heavy and 1600 means staying-power wins, and his map keeps him in range.

Roughie: Red Beryl (No.5) — $10.00 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.24x
Why If it turns into a late scramble, she's one of the better "get out and get home" rough chances.

Race 9 – Bm58, 1300 Country Cup of Attrition

Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace

Punty read:

Demarcate is the main man here, the map says he's in the mix and he should get a real look at the finish. Billabong Rose is the big live second threat because she can travel and then keep serving through the heavy. Palentino Swinger is a grinder with a sneaky upside, especially if the pace war drags and turns the last 200m into a survival test.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Demarcate (No.2) — $4.30 / $1.80
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $32.25 (wins) / $13.50 (places)
Prob 19.1% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.14x
Why Genuine pace helps, he can sit right in the right section of the race and then keep grinding.
2. Billabong Rose (No.4) — $6.75 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 44.4% | Value: 1.23x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Palentino Swinger (No.3) — $8.15 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 30.7% | Value: 1.27x
Why If the race splits and the lanes open, he's in the right spot to grab money late.

Roughie: The Confidante (No.6) — $9.40 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 1.15x
Why He has to find a lane and use the pace, if he gets squeezed it's game over, but if it opens, he can ping.

SEQUENCE LANES

EARLY QUADDIE (R2–R5)

Smart: 6,10,2,7,4 / 6,18,5 / 13,8,2,9 / 4,8,2,14 (240 combos x $0.27 = $64.80) -- 27% flexi
One-line commentary: Two open legs and one medium-wide leg, this is a "cover enough" quad, not a lock it in fantasy.

Punty's take: Three legs have strong shapes and one is chaos, it's entertainment with a backbone, do not get cute.

QUADDIE (R6–R9)

Smart: 7,5,4,2 / 3,9,5,6 / 2,3,7,5 / 2,4,3,6 (256 combos x $0.25 = $64.00) -- 25% flexi
One-line commentary: All open races, four legs of "anything can happen", Heavy 9 does what it wants.

Punty's take: Wide open each leg means you need a couple of upsets, still playable because the winners are likely in the cluster.

BIG 6 (R4–R9)

Smart: 2 / 4 / 7 / 3 / 2 / 2 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2.00) -- 200% flexi
One-line commentary: Skinniest of skins, it's basically a pub dare with extra math attached.

Punty's take: This is the "one day only" type of bet, if it hits with all the short winners, it's cinema. If not, it's a valuable learning experience, unfortunately.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Heavy 9 and short races means gear matters more than you think
When the first time gear is about focus or restricting distractions, it helps them handle the wet chop at speed. That's why the early pick angles are more about staying switched on than "best jockey on paper".

2 - Slow 1600m tempo is a place-bet playground
When the pace isn't sprinting away, the horses that can hold a mid-pack spot become the safest closers. That's why Race 2 is full of "park and get home" types.

3 - Watch for favourites that get backed for a reason, but can still get boxed
Prince Of Sorts and Poetic Way both have the class, but Heavy 9 can trap momentum. If the leaders bottle up early, the stalkers still cash place and sometimes win.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Heavy 9 turns racing into a long-form argument with the laws of physics. I'm betting on the ones that can keep their rhythm and not get bullied by the slop, and I'm happy to let a couple of prices prove my point the hard way. Now get in there, have a crack, and if it goes wrong, at least we're going down entertaining. Gamble Responsibly.
