Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden Handicap, 1250m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, Private Liaison is the pace pocket opener
Punty read:
This is one of those Soft 5 maiden scraps where everyone wants to wait, then suddenly the race is happening and you're still on the fence doing nothing. The speed advantage sits with Private Liaison (No.12), and with McEvoy aboard and a favourable early position profile, he's the type to get the perfect trip and then grind late. Montresor and In Circles both look like they're capable of running a cheeky race for a place, but the winner's story feels like the one that's already been shaping around the betting.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Private Liaison (No.12) — $2.35 / $1.14 🏆 5TH
Bet $13.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 39.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.21x
Why Strong market support on the favourite, drops into this grade well, and the Soft 5 tempo suits a controlled grinder.
2. Montresor (No.7) — $3.30 / $1.32 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.02x
Why A real chance — but at $1.32 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. In Circles (No.3) — $4.60 / $1.60 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 60.0% | Value: 0.65x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Odin's Eye (No.4) — $15.00 / $3.10 🏆 7TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.7% | Place: 21.4% | Value: 0.71x
Why If the pace melts and he finds clear air, he's dangerous, otherwise he's usually there for the highlight reel, not the cheque.
Race type: Maiden, 1350m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Yvonne's Joy is the classier "get rolling and keep going" option
Punty read:
This one looks like it'll be run with intent, which is good news for the horses who can maintain rhythm instead of doing stop-start parkour in Soft 5. Yvonne's Joy (No.11) is short for a reason, and when she settles in a workable spot, she's got the most reliable platform to kick through late. Grand Carousel (No.8) has the kind of profile that suits a place bet, and Algorithmic (No.1) is the type to run into the fight late, just not with the same certainty as the top two.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.00 pool)
1. Yvonne's Joy (No.11) — $1.75 / $1.05 🏆 WINNER
Bet $17.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$12.75
Prob 48.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.25x
Why Market's firming for a reason, she maps like the one most likely to sustain, and Soft 5 helps her keep grinding.
2. Grand Carousel (No.8) — $4.20 / $1.45 🏆 5TH
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 16.4% | Place: 67.1% | Value: 0.90x
Why Good place profile with that run style, and in a genuine tempo, the midpack can still produce late charging.
3. Algorithmic (No.1) — $7.50 / $1.85 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.59x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: The Prospect (No.5) — $11.00 / $2.45 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.7% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.80x
Why Bumps and interference can take them out of their race, and if he gets a cleaner run this time, he can be part of the chaos finish.
Race type: Maiden, 1150m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Force March and St Johann are the ones with the forward momentum
Punty read:
This is a straight-up sprint battle where the wet ground rewards clean acceleration and staying balanced through the corners. Force March (No.2) has the speed story, with ear muffs first time and a map that actually likes what it's doing. St Johann (No.4) is the kind of horse that can keep kicking through because she's positioned well and has the right kind of Soft run. Mayweather (No.5) sits close enough to be annoying late, but I'm treating him as a place and trifecta look only.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Force March (No.2) — $3.10 / $1.40
Bet $15.00 Win
Prob 28.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.33x
Why The pace fit is real, gear suggests focus, and the whole race shape screams "he's getting first crack at the finish".
2. St Johann (No.4) — $2.70 / $1.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.12x
Why A real chance — but at $1.30 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Mayweather (No.5) — $6.00 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.1% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.13x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Wan Lost (No.1) — $13.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.4% | Place: 20.8% | Value: 0.37x
Why His excuses are real and if he comes out sharper, he can snatch a late cheque while everyone scrambles.
Race type: Class 1, 1150m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Lady Of The Castle and Bees Knees press into a contested pocket
Punty read:
Soft 5 at 1150m means positions are oxygen. Canal (No.1) has the backmarker role, but he also has that "they're going to go too quick then tire" kind of profile. Nafanua (No.9) and Lady Of The Castle (No.4) are the ones most likely to take the race by the scruff, especially if they find a run closer to the speed. Perfect Force (No.6) is a place chance and Stubborn Emmelie (No.7) can sneak into the mix, but the winner feel is about whether the leaders can keep their legs under them in the mud.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.50 pool)
1. Canal (No.1) — $2.30 / $1.15
Bet $9.50 Win
Prob 27.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.80x
Why Soft 5 turns the race into a timing test, and Canal can pounce late if they don't go the whole way.
2. Nafanua (No.9) — $4.20 / $1.62
Bet $2.00 Place
Prob 19.2% | Place: 61.6% | Value: 1.02x
Why Has the running style to keep contact and he's suited to a grindy C1 sprint.
3. Lady Of The Castle (No.4) — $5.50 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.9% | Place: 56.3% | Value: 1.11x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Nomomeikushi (No.11) — $23.00 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.5% | Place: 14.0% | Value: 1.02x
Why If she's forward enough early and the front runners stall, she can be the late plot twist.
Race type: Benchmark 64, 1350m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Stallone drags them forward and the midpack has to work for it
Punty read:
When it's genuine pace at 1350, you're either on it or you're paying for it. Stallone (No.2) looks like the real controlling force, and Kerrin will have him in a spot where he can keep putting them under pressure instead of just reacting. Extra Heights (No.3) is capable in this sort of race, and Onmalone (No.5) is the type that can benefit if the leaders get challenged and the race turns into a scramble.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Stallone (No.2) — $2.45 / $1.25
Bet $14.00 Win
Prob 27.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.85x
Why He's the pace engine, and on Soft 5, pace engines are still the engines if they're not burning out.
2. Extra Heights (No.3) — $3.80 / $1.60
Bet $5.00 Place
Prob 21.2% | Place: 64.2% | Value: 1.01x
Why Place profile is strong when the tempo is genuine, he's got every chance to keep grinding into the finish.
3. Sharp Shock (No.1) — $9.50 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.19x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Onmalone (No.5) — $10.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.13x
Why Can slot on the speed and if the leaders start to crack, he's right there to pick up the pieces.
Race type: Benchmark 64, 1350m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Divine Secrets gets a cleaner run into the tempo
Punty read:
This is a race where the best horse probably shows it early, because on Soft 5 at 1350 you can't fake fitness, you feel it through every stride. Divine Secrets (No.3) gets the run and she's the right sort of horse to capitalise when the pace is real. Blenheim Girl (No.2) is a credible second string and fits the Soft rhythm, and Beverly Hills (No.9) is the value play if the race unfolds as expected and someone starts to lose momentum late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Divine Secrets (No.3) — $2.20 / $1.14
Bet $14.00 Win
Prob 32.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.91x
Why Genuine pace helps her, and she's built for that steady, relentless finish that wins wet-track battles.
2. Blenheim Girl (No.2) — $4.60 / $1.65
Bet $5.00 Place
Prob 18.2% | Place: 56.4% | Value: 1.05x
Why Place bet is the sweet spot, and Soft 5 often drags out the tempo into her favour.
3. Beverly Hills (No.9) — $7.50 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.1% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.24x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Fire 'n' Stone (No.12) — $12.00 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.06x
Why If the tempo collapses late, she can swoop through the fatigue like a horror movie jump-scare.
Race type: Benchmark 68, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Grinzinger Pod and Better Late are set to tussle mid-race
Punty read:
1200m Provincial on Soft 5 is about who keeps their concentration for one more split. Grinzinger Pod (No.4) looks like the classier speed presence in the shape, with Better Late (No.6) and Brown Sugar (No.7) close enough to make this a real contest. Heuristic (No.2) has the value vibe if she gets a good run through the middle, but Grinzinger Pod is the most likely to do the hard yards and still kick.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.50 pool)
1. Grinzinger Pod (No.4) — $2.55 / $1.20
Bet $16.00 Win
Prob 24.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.79x
Why Needs to be forward enough to win this, and the tempo profile supports that grind.
2. Better Late (No.6) — $4.40 / $1.60
Bet $3.50 Place
Prob 20.8% | Place: 54.6% | Value: 1.15x
Why She's got that "run on when it counts" gear, and Better Late fits the Soft 5 late momentum.
3. Brown Sugar (No.7) — $4.20 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.10x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Angara (No.9) — $34.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 1.3% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.56x
Why Only really in it if something falls apart early and the race turns into pure endurance chaos.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 1,9,4 / 2,3,5 / 3,2,12 / 4,6,7 (81 combos x $0.25 = $20.48) -- 25% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Private Liaison (Race 1, No.12)✗ — $2.35
2 - Yvonne's Joy (Race 2, No.11)✓ Won — $1.75
3 - Divine Secrets (Race 6, No.3) — $2.20

Punty's Early Mail

MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Soft 5, 1200-1350m card
Rail: True 400m-W/Post: +2m remainder
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play holding on and running on, like a bad sequel)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 16°C, humidity 65%, wind 20km/h WNW (watch for gusty shifts that mess with early timing)
Early lane guess: Fairly midfield-to-on-pace, then runners sweep late when gaps appear
Tempo profile: Slow to genuine depending on race, Soft 5 makes everything longer and lazier early
Jockeys to follow:
Kerrin McEvoy: gets first crack at the race leaders types, and he usually turns "maybe" into "hit the line".
Chad Schofield: maps well in the wet or Soft, and when the speed is there, he's ruthless.
Andrew Adkins: can sit handy and strike late, watch for him when the tempo is genuine.
Stables to respect:
Peter Snowden (7 runners): money coming out of the stable for a reason, and he's savage with gear and timing.
K A Lees (5 runners): when his horses are value, they tend to get the job done, even if it's a bit ugly.
Annabel & Rob Archibald (3 runners): Soft track form and patient placement, they don't panic.
Punty's take:
This meeting is Soft 5 energy, which means the early pace matters, but the real drama is who gets clear galloping room when the field starts to clump up like drunk mates at the last train home. In these conditions, backmarkers can still sneak a cheque, but only if the leaders actually go quick enough for them to pick them off, otherwise they just wallow in the mud and have a nice chat to the back of the pack.
I'm leaning into two styles all day. Race 1 is screaming "class drop into a maiden handicap headfake" and I've got the Short Price No.12 for that. Race 2 and Race 6 are where the spine lives, with the favourites that look like they've got the best run in the race, and not just because the market's loud. Then later, when the pace gets busy, I'll have a couple of roughies who can swoop if the tempo goes the wrong way for the public.
What it means for you:
If you want to be sensible (gross, I know), your best lane is Place support and the on-pace leaders that can bully the Soft track rhythm. In the earlier races the map is pretty honest, so don't overthink it when No.12 in Race 1 and No.11 in Race 2 line up with the right run.
If you want to be a proper degenerate, you take your roughie when the favourite is "too straightforward" and gaps might appear late. Just don't get cute with $20 to $50 roughies on a Soft track unless the story actually fits. Here the roughies are more about "speed collapses, chaos blooms" than "magic carpet ride".
