Rightio Sickos, Northam on a Soft 5 with the rain sitting in the corner like it wants a go, fucken love it. This is one of those meetings where the early speed and the right horses handle the grit, and the wrong ones just hang on for dear life trying to hit a photo finish. We're going in with a proper spine, then letting the chaos do what chaos does.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Soft 5, 1000-2200m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good 4 (updated from Soft 5) (expected to play leaders and running types)
Weather: Shower or two, 9°C, humidity 92%, wind 9km/h W (watch for rain risk 50%+ around 14:00)
Early lane guess: True rail, give me lanes closer early where possible, then outside runs get rewarded if the wheels hold
Tempo profile: Slow pace on the way in, so if a horse is on the speed early, it usually has the legs left later too
Jockeys to follow:
Chris Parnham: tends to land on the right "job" horses, especially when they map forward
Taj Dyson: can take control with the ride, and today's Soft5 sprints suit confident timing
Brandon Louis: often gets the run in transit and finishes off with purpose
Stables to respect:
Mack Hall (runners: 1): when they bring one up in this grade, it's normally with intent
N D Parnham (runners: 4): keeps turning them out, gear changes and early positioning look a big deal
D & B Pearce (runners: 2): knows how to get a horse to run its race on the day
Punty's take:
Soft 5 at Northam is usually a story of traction and timing. If the rain actually arrives, the track turns into a more honest "keep running" contest, and the horses that can hold a position early get paid. Slow tempo here can lull people into backing the wrong type, because the backmarkers get brave later, then the front just keeps finding more like it's charging rent.
Races 4 to 7 are your quaddie playground. You can throw a dart at one or two, sure, but you'll sleep better if you've got your main ingredients locked: the pace map, the barrier, and a horse that's coming in under the right conditions. I'm betting the meeting goes one of two ways, either the leaders hold up their end, or the outsiders sprint late because the race falls apart. Either way, we've built it.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Major Magnus (Race 1, No.3) — $2.47
Why Drawn well, maps to get involved early, and Soft 5 usually helps them grind home.
2 - God's Choice (Race 3, No.9) — $1.86
Why The speed profile stacks up, and when a fav like this is that short, it's built for the line.
3 - Saisoku (Race 6, No.1) — $2.60
Why Best suited to a confident run, and the way it profiles, it's the type that can control the 1600m grind.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~12.00 collect = ~$120.00 collect
Race 1 – Times At The Track: Sunday 13 Sept Mdn (MAIDEN, 2200m)
Race type: Maiden, 2200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, with Obscentino and Major Magnus primed to press, the staying run matters
Punty read:
This is a classic "don't overthink it, map it" 2200m maiden on Soft 5. Major Magnus (No.3) has the speed ranking that fits the race shape, and barrier 1 for a backmarker type can be gold because you avoid getting shuffled into ground loss chaos. Obscentino (No.1) is the danger, because she's been getting caught up in interference and held up runs, and when you've got that excuse history on Soft, you forgive it and hope for a clean run.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.50 pool)
1. Major Magnus (No.3) — $2.47 / $1.20
Bet $17.00 Win, return $41.99
Prob 28.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.13x
Why Fits the staying map better than most, and you want a horse with the early involvement to bank position on Soft.
2. Obscentino (No.1) — $3.70 / $1.50
Bet $2.50 Place, return $3.75
Prob 25.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.11x
Why The recent runs are full of legit excuses, and when she gets clear, this is a race that rewards that grind home.
3. Sylva Jack (No.4) — $4.60 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 48.8% | Value: 0.59x
Why Roughly, she's the "maybe gets a spot" one, but at this price I'm not paying to sweat it.
Roughie: Chief Commander (No.8) — $9.70 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.21x
Prob 9.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.21x
Why If he runs a place it's usually a bonus, but to win, the front needs a bit of chaos and we're not building around that.
Race 2 – Afgri Equipment Northam Mdn (MAIDEN, 1100m)
Race type: Maiden, 1100m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, Supersmash likely uses barrier 1 to set the tempo, others can sit and pounce
Punty read:
Sprints on Soft can make you feel like you're backing a roulette wheel, but 1100m still has rules. Splintabelle (No.8) has the most reliable "can hit the board" profile, and at $2.75 it's the right kind of short for a maiden, because the sharp ones tend to show up early and never fully disappear. Tex 'n' Cee (No.3) is the exact sort of value place play if the early tempo stays honest.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)
1. Splintabelle (No.8) — $2.75 / $1.32
Bet $20.00 Win, return $55.00
Prob 24.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.89x
Why Maps to hit the action and Soft 5 at 1100m often punishes late chargers who need luck.
2. Tex 'n' Cee (No.3) — $4.00 / $1.57
Bet $4.00 Place, return $6.28
Prob 18.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.97x
Why First time blinkers and a clean run scenario can see him slide into the finish.
3. Peak Tycoon (No.5) — $4.90 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.3% | Place: 60.6% | Value: 0.74x
Why Could run better than his odds suggest, but I'm not chucking a ticket at that uncertainty today.
Roughie: Swing Dancer (No.9) — $11.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.24x
Prob 8.5% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.24x
Why Path is there for a place if the race breaks, but this one's got to do everything right.
Race 3 – Retro Raceday - Sunday 4 October Mdn (MAIDEN, 1000m)
Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Cartier Glow and Salve Regina are your tempo helpers, and the straight decides it
Punty read:
This is a speed chess game. Gods Choice (No.9) is the bully of the yard at $1.86, and with that cross-over nose band first time, you want to see the market confidence hold. Salve Regina (No.5) and Cartier Glow (No.7) can box the leaders into a sprint war, which usually makes the fav a bit scarier. Dip It In A Dream (No.8) is my "if they go hard early, she scoots home" roughie.
Top 3 + Roughie ($25.00 pool)
1. God's Choice (No.9) — $1.86 / $1.09
Bet $19.50 Win, return $36.27
Prob 41.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.27x
Why Proper map fit with genuine speed on, and she's the one most likely to take the advantage and still be there.
2. Salve Regina (No.5) — $4.40 / $1.55
Bet $3.50 Place, return $5.42
Prob 21.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.36x
Why Soft suits and she's been showing she can run near the front, just needs the right slice of room.
3. Cartier Glow (No.7) — $4.50 / $1.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.9% | Place: 68.1% | Value: 1.24x
Why She can absolutely be there, but the value pocket gets tighter at this slot.
Roughie: Dip It In A Dream (No.8) — $10.10 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.1% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.21x
Prob 9.1% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.21x
Why If the leaders are pushed, she's the type that can ride the wave and grab a piece late.
Race 4 – Debortoli Family Winemakers (Bm46+) (HANDICAP, 1100m)
Race type: Handicap, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Brinson and Be My Belle can show speed, the inside tends to get favours on Soft
Punty read:
Chaos handicap, but with order underneath it. Cawarra (No.3) is the value anchor at $5.00, and she's mapped to handle it because her profile fits the Soft sprint way better than the more expensive types. Brinson (No.1) is speed danger, but I'm taking him on place at $3.10 because the barrier 1 style can help him hold position while the deeper run wins. Mantua (No.6) is included enough to respect, but the model isn't keen to pay to bet her.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)
1. Cawarra (No.3) — $5.00 / $1.80
Bet $20.00 Win, return $100.00
Prob 21.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.44x
Why Soft sprint form profile screams chance, and this is the sort of race where the right on-pace pattern gets home.
2. Brinson (No.1) — $3.10 / $1.45
Bet $4.00 Place, return $5.80
Prob 20.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.99x
Why Barrier 1 gives him the run, and even if he doesn't win, he should be hard to pass late.
3. Mantua (No.6) — $4.70 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 58.8% | Value: 0.99x
Why Could be in the mix, but value says protect the bet money for ones with clearer paths.
Roughie: So Immaculate (No.4) — $9.15 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.05x
Prob 8.7% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.05x
Why If the race comes apart, sure, but I want my ticket anchored in the more reliable map.
Race 5 – Vale Max Trenorden Hcp (C1) (HANDICAP, 1300m)
Race type: Handicap, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Playing Free and Hello Veneta likely get into it, Blue Sparx sits midfield and hits through
Punty read:
1300m on Soft is where "running style" beats "hope". Blue Sparx (No.6) is the tightest profile in the race at $2.90, and when a horse is this close to even money territory, they usually earn their keep. Don't Wink (No.3) is the place play, because midfield types can get the run saving ground then produce when the leaders tire. Hello Veneta is interesting, but the model says don't force it at the current value lines.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Blue Sparx (No.6) — $2.90 / $1.45
Bet $14.00 Win, return $40.60
Prob 25.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.97x
Why The most sensible blend of pace and finishing profile, and this is the right kind of distance to let a good horse breathe.
2. Don't Wink (No.3) — $3.30 / $1.55
Bet $5.00 Place, return $7.75
Prob 23.3% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.03x
Why Soft track helps, and if the leaders move, he can slide into the exact spot you want for a place.
3. Hello Veneta (No.10) — $8.70 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.25x
Why Could run a cheeky race, but the place value path isn't clean enough.
Roughie: Silent Amarda (No.7) — $9.15 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.20x
Prob 9.7% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.20x
Why Backmarker risks on Soft are real, and I'd rather keep the ticket where the run is clearer.
Race 6 – Procon Developments (Aust) Northam Cup - Sunday 25 Oct Mdn (MAIDEN, 1600m)
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so position early matters, and the kick on Soft 1600m can decide it
Punty read:
Saisoku (No.1) is the one I want on top. At $2.60, she's the "right horse, right race" type, and with the 1600m she gets enough time to roll into clear air and make her move. Ruthless Bloom (No.9) is value on place because the race shape can suit a horse to run on without getting trapped wide too early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.00 pool)
1. Saisoku (No.1) — $2.60 / $1.40
Bet $17.00 Win, return $44.20
Prob 26.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.26x
Why Better suited to the slow-pace 1600m grind, and Soft usually rewards those that can keep travelling without spiralling.
2. Ruthless Bloom (No.9) — $4.20 / $1.75
Bet $5.00 Place, return $8.75
Prob 18.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.06x
Why Comes into it late if the tempo stays sticky, and that's the exact kind of setup for a place dividend.
3. Forever Victorious (No.8) — $4.75 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.00x
Why The price is a bit too "fair" for the risk, and we've got better value paths elsewhere.
Roughie: Flavoursome (No.7) — $10.10 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.56x
Prob 8.1% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.56x
Why She can pop into the frame, but she needs the race to run a very specific way.
Race 7 – Northam Cup Packages - Trybooking.Com Hcp (C3) (HANDICAP, 1600m)
Race type: Handicap, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace up the page, so the "tiring leaders" angle is real, but you still need position
Punty read:
This is where 1600m handicaps get spicy. Classic Impact (No.2) has the best overall shape for the run, and I'm with it each way because it can sit in the right lane then keep giving. Pure Mac (No.1) is there as a danger type, Capable Angel (No.10) might pop up, but the model isn't paying for them. Sandfire Rose is my roughie for the quaddie fantasy crowd, but I'm keeping the main bet money where it's cleanest.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Classic Impact (No.2) — $4.40 / $1.80
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $23.10 (wins) / $9.45 (places)
Prob 19.2% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.16x
Why Pace scenario suits, and the run profile says she can be there at the business end without needing luck roulette.
2. Pure Mac (No.1) — $4.30 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.1% | Place: 60.3% | Value: 1.01x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Capable Angel (No.10) — $6.75 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.4% | Place: 56.0% | Value: 1.15x
Why A place is plausible, but the value pocket isn't screaming enough to justify adding more uncertainty.
Roughie: Sandfire Rose (No.9) — $9.15 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.89x
Prob 7.0% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.89x
Why She's got the lane and the speed to snag a spot if the front burn out, but she's not where I'm spending.
SEQUENCE LANES
Quaddie (R4–R7)
Smart: 1,3,6,4 / 6,3,10,7 / 1,9,8,7 / 1,2,10,9 (256 combos x $0.12 = $32.00) -- 12% flexi
One-line commentary on leg shapes and risk level: Three of the legs are broad and one is a real open-chaos one, so this quaddie is for the punter who likes a sweat, and it's built to catch the close-enough exact trifecta vibes across those mid cards.
Punty's take: Four legs of wide coverage at this meeting is always a ride, but we've still pinned the first and third legs with the most likely shapes, then spread the rest for the late-run chaos.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Soft 5 and "slow pace" means save your money for real position players
If the tempo is slow, horses that need to travel too far back usually eat dirt in the wrong moment, while the ones that can sit closer keep their energy.
2 - Maiden 1000m and 1100m often punish the "one-luck wonder"
God's Choice (No.9) and Splintabelle (No.8) are both set up as the types that keep coming rather than just hitting one good burst.
3 - Rain risk is the sneaky selector today
If the track gets chewier later, the late runners have more traction, so the place plays in Races 2, 3, and 6 are your "I swear I saw it" type bonuses.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
The quaddie is gonna test your patience, but the Big 3 spine is built for a day where the better horses can still do the job even if the rain has a wobble. Let the speed map do the talking, and when it comes down to lanes, trust the ones that can keep moving. Gamble Responsibly.
