When the track is this claggy, the race shapes get louder, the front runners get heavier, and every wide run feels like trying to overtake on a slip and slide. So we're not chasing "nice" winners, we're chasing ones that can handle the squeeze and still hit the line with their lungs intact.

My spine for today is simple, get the big race stories right early, then stack a multi around the ones that can do the hard work in the slop. Punty's take:

Heavy 9 at Te Aroha turns the meeting into a game of "who can get away with murder through the middle stages". In Race 1, I'm backing Rosina because she's got the profile of a horse that just keeps taking ground in slog conditions, and she's the favourite for a reason in the mud, even if the price looks a touch cheeky. If this turns into a messy grind, she's the sort that can pick up the pieces.

Then we swing into the big jump blocks and the staying handicaps, and that's where I get greedy. Race 4 with Taika is a classic Heavy 9 setup, where the likely group winner can wear them down and not get bullied at the start. After that, Race 6 is the kind of steeple where you want a horse who does the work early enough to be there late, and I'm all-in on Duke Of Plumpton.

By Race 9, this turns into a sprint battle in a maiden, and the trick is to find the one who can hold the front without getting cooked. Hip Flask looks like the type to keep going when the field starts spreading like melted chocolate.

What it means for you:

If you only back favourites, you'll get paid once in a blue moon and then wonder where your rent money went. So we're doing it properly: take the reliable top end, then sprinkle in place value where Heavy 9 is most dangerous, those "almost" runners who keep running even when they miss the win.

My aggression is highest in the races where the map lines up with who should be travelling and still finishing. That means: Race 1 for Place and Win juice, Race 4 and Race 6 for win conviction, and Race 9 for each way style thinking.
