Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1800m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, Ranger's Pride profile is the early advantage, so you want to be close enough to react
Punty read:
This is a classic maiden where the front runner should get a cheap run, and the rest are there to see who can handle the ground without wasting energy. Ranger's Pride looks like the early speed story, and with a slow tempo on Soft 5, the leaders can keep popping their heads over the same bit of track until the real sprint comes. The trouble is, in a slow 1800, it's easy for the good movers to get stuck behind traffic if they're not getting an easy lane.
Kojak is the obvious threat style wise, because he can stalk without boiling up, then hit the line like he means it. Highland Kitty is right there too, and she gives you that "she'll run on late and make you feel smarter than your mate" vibe. Kalamia King is the sort of horse who looks like she got bumped enough times to still be alive in the race, so don't write her off just because she's not leading.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.50 pool)
1. Ranger's Pride (No.9) — $3.45 / $1.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $17.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$17.00
Prob 24.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.01x
Why The early advantage fits a Soft 5 slow run, and once she hits cruising speed she's hard to corner.
2. Kojak (No.2) — $4.20 / $1.57 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $2.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$2.50
Prob 20.7% | Place: 60.3% | Value: 0.76x
Why On pace style with market love behind it, plus he should get a trail and then a clean crack.
3. Highland Kitty (No.7) — $4.90 / $1.72 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.7% | Place: 54.3% | Value: 0.80x
Why She fits the trip and can run on, but the place price is a bit tight for what I want to risk.
Roughie: Ship Happens (No.3) — $16.00 / $3.50 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 1.07x
Why If they slow it down and soften the finish, she's the kind of midfield runner that can sneak a slice late.
Race type: Class 1, 2220m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, Firey Truth and a few others make the race shape easier to read
Punty read:
This one is about staying power and correct position, Soft 5 at 2220m turns it into a chess game where every move costs a bit. Firey Truth has the perfect "wait and then go" profile, and she's got heavy market support, which tells me connections are not bringing her for a photo. Missile Away looks like the best "follow the leader" option, and Vega Sicilia can loom if the race opens up.
The risk is the usual one, when the tempo is slow, backmarkers can get trapped in the wrong pocket. Still, Firey Truth's type of running is built to avoid panic, and the finishing kick should show up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Firey Truth (No.1) — $1.96 / $1.25 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 46.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.13x
Why Backed hard, soft track suits her, and at this distance the patient run turns into a weapon.
2. Missile Away (No.7) — $6.20 / $2.65 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 29.5% | Value: 1.05x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Vega Sicilia (No.4) — $6.20 / $2.65 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 0.87x
Why She can be dangerous if the pace collapses, but this is where price and place payout fights back.
Roughie: Moana Nui (No.8) — $9.60 / $3.60 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.5% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.14x
Why She needs the right setup and room to unwind late, and that's a racing lottery ticket.
Race type: Class 4, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, speed on and off with Tiz Worthy and North Of Eli in the mix
Punty read:
1200m on Soft 5 is where good sprinters pretend they're middle distance battlers. If they go too hard, it's death by a thousand cuts, but if it's balanced, the ones who can find the line first are the ones that cash. Tiz Worthy is the early speed engine in the race story, and Acapulco Girl is the "she's been there done that" type, especially at this shorter trip.
Italian Dancer is the value angle I like, because she's had interference and still keeps showing she can run through a field. La Rosetta and Carbonara can sneak in if there's a traffic jam that unlocks late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Acapulco Girl (No.1) — $4.50 / $1.60 🏆 4TH
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 22.9% | Place: 67.8% | Value: 1.28x
Why She's the sort that handles Soft well and keeps putting herself in the race, even when she doesn't get first look early.
2. Tiz Worthy (No.4) — $2.82 / $1.25 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.79x
Why A real chance — but at $1.25 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Italian Dancer (No.7) — $7.20 / $2.15 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.27x
Why She's got the run and the gear tweak type of profile, just not the best place payout band.
Roughie: Tonkatsu Goddess (No.8) — $11.50 / $3.00 🏆 7TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.7% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 0.82x
Why Needs luck and the lane to appear, but if the pace sets up she's not dead money.
Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, chaos vibe with a few need-a-run types and a couple with the right profile to pounce
Punty read:
This is the type of Noosa Heads race where one horse jumps out and everyone else goes, 'yeah nah, I'll wait'. Dark Mode is the one I'm trusting to get into it, because the draw and the stalking profile can work out perfectly. Fiery Lass is the local market threat, but you've got to watch for the soft track effect, the winner is the one who balances speed with survival.
Interactive and Phoenix Legend are the "if they get a gap" risks, and Lili Anna can hit the line if she gets clear. The open field feeling here means you're best off having a clear lead horse and not too many second guesses.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Dark Mode (No.1) — $5.10 / $2.00 🏆 8TH
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 18.7% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.22x
Why He's built to sit close on Soft 5 and the market is treating him like a live chance, not a fill-in.
2. Fiery Lass (No.18) — $4.70 / $1.90 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 50.5% | Value: 1.16x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Interactive (No.2) — $6.20 / $2.25 🏆 13TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.4% | Place: 40.8% | Value: 0.99x
Why She's got a chance to run on, but the place odds aren't doing me any favours.
Roughie: Lili Anna (No.9) — $9.20 / $2.90 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 27.0% | Value: 0.59x
Why If the pack chops up late, she can sneak a piece, but it's more "watch" than "bet."
Race type: Benchmark 62, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Custo and Andi Don't Care are on the handy track
Punty read:
1000m on Soft 5 is all about quick acceleration and not getting bottled up. Andi Don't Care maps to press and can be the kind of runner that turns the race into a sprint from the 300m mark. Custo is right there too, a class above most if he gets to that sweet spot in the run, and Marty Mcfly is the "he's due, watch him go" type.
Gold Fever and Caxton Lass are the outside threats if the inside lanes go dead, and Loken has a bit of upside for a late grab if the pace collapses.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)
1. Andi Don't Care (No.7) — $3.45 / $1.45 🏆 5TH
Bet $20.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$20.00
Prob 26.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.16x
Why Speed profile suits Soft 5, barrier is workable, and she looks like the one who keeps going when others flicker.
2. Custo (No.6) — $4.20 / $1.60 🏆 2ND
Bet $4.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$2.40
Prob 19.5% | Place: 62.9% | Value: 1.03x
Why Handy type with the ability to stalk, and the market is bringing him in with purpose.
3. Marty Mcfly (No.2) — $6.20 / $1.85 🏆 7TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.22x
Why The value case is there, but the place return band isn't paying enough for me to press.
Roughie: Loken (No.10) — $9.40 / $2.65 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 32.8% | Value: 1.03x
Why Only needs the right lane and a small pace wobble to get into the mix.
Race type: Handicap, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, pace gets set up, and Lady Willpower is the one that wants the front roll
Punty read:
This is your classic 1000m handicap where the right horse turns into a bully. Lady Willpower is on the speed map and is priced like she has a job, not like she's a "maybe later" type. Vin Santo is the one I like for value leverage, especially if she gets a clean path and can hit the line with momentum.
Shahar is the spicy backup, and Icymiss can run a cheeky race if the others go too hard early and then fold.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)
1. Lady Willpower (No.9) — $2.27 / $1.15 🏆 5TH
Bet $17.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$17.50
Prob 31.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.90x
Why She's built for this kind of sprint and looks like she'll be right there when the race gets serious at the business end.
2. Vin Santo (No.3) — $6.75 / $2.00 🏆 WINNER
Bet $6.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$6.50
Prob 16.6% | Place: 57.8% | Value: 1.40x
Why Big value place angle, and if she gets a spot she can run through late like a bloke cutting in the line at the pie warmer.
3. Shahar (No.7) — $5.65 / $1.80 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.7% | Place: 52.0% | Value: 1.04x
Why She's capable, but the value is better when you're landing it on the other two.
Roughie: Riva D'amor (No.10) — $13.00 / $3.00 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.8% | Place: 26.8% | Value: 1.11x
Why Outside chance type, needs the gaps to appear and the tempo to soften up.
Race type: Benchmark 78, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, but the speed threatens to run up and make it a real test late
Punty read:
This is the Noosa Cup and the 1400m is where the race turns into a battle for timing. Little Beginnings is the one with the most reliable pace story, and on Soft 5 at this distance, those "steady grind then sprint" types can absolutely slice it up. Carravilla is the short priced danger that can pinch a spot, Italian Riviera is the value angle with the right approach, and Liberty Steps is a force if she gets her run.
The big warning, this is 1400m, so if you get too deep too early you'll be walking to the line.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Little Beginnings (No.5) — $3.55 / $1.82 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 27.1% | Place: 61.9% | Value: 1.19x
Why Maps well, can handle Soft, and when the field starts stretching she should be rolling.
2. Carravilla (No.8) — $2.45 / $1.45 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.9% | Place: 63.2% | Value: 0.75x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Italian Riviera (No.4) — $6.20 / $2.65 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.2% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.39x
Why She's the standout price value, but the ticket doesn't need more extras when we've got the spine.
Roughie: Demitasse (No.12) — $14.25 / $4.20 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.87x
Why Needs everything to go right, which is how roughies stay roughies.
Race type: Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with clearly George leading, and the race should stay honest
Punty read:
1400m with genuine pace means the cheap saves are harder. Homeric looks like the main speed engine and the best "stand up and take the trip" runner. In Great Spirit is the one that can slot in and then pounce, and Weekend Spirit is the value with the right running style.
Evade The Game is the wildcard who can surge if the race turns into a sprint late, and Badda Boom Baby can sneak into the top few if the lanes open.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Homeric (No.2) — $3.15 / $1.52 🏆 5TH
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 19.1% | Place: 59.2% | Value: 0.79x
Why With genuine pace, speed gets rewarded, and he should be in the right spot to hit the line.
2. In Great Spirit (No.11) — $6.20 / $2.25 🏆 11TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 55.2% | Value: 1.06x
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Weekend Spirit (No.5) — $7.75 / $2.55 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.9% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.30x
Why Value is there in the win sense, but again the place side is too fussy for this ticket.
Roughie: Evade The Game (No.10) — $11.50 / $3.60 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.39x
Why He needs the run to open late, but if it does, he's got the sort of burst that can grab third and sometimes more.

Selections
Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Sunshine Coast is running Soft 5 with the rail jammed out, and that sort of day is where you get a flyer over the short sprinties, then everyone sweats when the real slog starts.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Soft 5, 1000m to 1800m card
Rail: +4m Entire
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play Runners who can handle give, and those that can settle close early)
Weather: Shower or two, humidity up, wind SE with gusts, so expect the track to stay holding, not drying out
Early lane guess: Leaders and handy runners get first dibs, especially in the 1000m races, then the staying types decide the 1800m real estate
Tempo profile: Slow to moderate early across the board, with Soft 5 encouraging a more efficient, no panic kind of run early, then the finish is where the bruises live
Jockeys to follow:
Ben Thompson: clean rider, gets them into the right spot and lets the horse do the job
Karl Zechner: does not waste motion, likes to be in the correct lane as the field turns
Les Tilley: good hands in wetier looking conditions, and he usually has a plan rather than a hope
Stables to respect:
David Vandyke (8 runners): repeatedly gets horses into the race at the right time, and the bookings are rarely random
K A Lees (5 runners): patient, then they pounce when the conditions suit
Phillip Burns (4 runners): when they're sharp, they're sharp, and on Soft 5 the right kind of galloper can slice through
Punty's take:
Alright legends, this is one of those Sunshine Coast cards where the track is Soft 5 and the rail is +4m, which means the track is a bit like a wet tarmac carpark, it wants sensible movement. You can still win from the front, but the best value will come from the horses that get to sit close without doing too much work, then sprint through the gaps when the pressure comes. If you chase every wide drift like a man chasing a rolling doona, you'll end up betting from your couch. We're not doing that.
My big story is speed versus survival. In the early 1200m to 1300m races you want to be on pace or within a few strides, because Soft 5 turns everything into a stamina tax. Then the 1000m races, they come up like sprinting at the end of a long drive, so horses with tactical speed and good draw positioning matter heaps. And in the middle distance stuff, it's about whether the horse can keep finding something without the ground going soft under their hooves.
Lastly, keep an eye on the market, because a few of these races have "heavily backed" vibes where people have seen the same thing I've seen, and those are the races you don't overthink. You just pick your spot, back the horse that looks like it has the run, and let the rest sort itself out like a season finale with three twists and one dead heat.
What it means for you:
For punting, this card basically splits into two jobs. Job one is lock in your anchors where the pace and market both line up, because on Soft 5 the wrong trip can erase a good horse. Job two is protect your ticket in the open races, because wide draws and held up trips are the sort of sabotage you only notice when it's too late.
My plan is to be aggressive with the "win" shapes that are backed and match the race shape, then let the roughies fill in when the run to the finish sets up like it's meant to. Especially in Race 6 and Race 7, where the place leverage is strong and the patterns suit those big finishers. If you're trying to be a hero everywhere, you'll finish like a bloke who tried to park in a parallel spot on a hill, slid, and blamed the car. No thanks.
