Rightio Ticket Munchers, Swan Hill on a Good 4 with a fine day and a bit of wind about, and the card is eight races of two very different types. The first half is mostly maidens where the favourites are short and the rest is a bit of a lottery. The back half is benchmark company where the speed comes from a handful of horses and the tickets get interesting fast. Grab a coffee, we've got a lot of ground to cover.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Swan Hill, 975m to 2400m card
Rail: Out 3m 900m - 500m, True Remainder
Official going: Good 4 (Rainfall: nil)
Weather: Fine, live conditions show gusts of 33.3km/h
Early lane guess: Unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Race 1 is moderate with two leaders in What Once Was and Street Painter. Race 2 moderate with Celtic Spy the one on the speed. Race 3 is genuine with Cast A Line the only named leader. Race 4 is slow. Race 5 is genuine with Kikkuli the lone leader and a crowd of ON-PACE types behind. Race 6 is slow with Flying Shelby the only one on the speed. Race 7 is genuine with Dealer Sing the leader. Race 8 is moderate with Baganov and Gift Of Oratory both named as leaders.
Jockeys to follow:
Harry Coffey: Eight rides today, with Ostrom in R1, Tremont in R3, Windsor Chariot in R4, Legend Beast in R6 and Neziha in R8. His track rate sits at 11.5% (954/8288) on the data.
Linda Meech: Six rides including Ambitious Achiever in R4 and Peace Seeker in R3. Ambitious Achiever's combo with Smiley Chan is 27.8% (5/18), which is the sort of number I like to see.
Dean Yendall: Five rides, with Switch Hit in R7 the one I'm most interested in. Flash Inquiry (R1) and Motiver (R6) also ride for him, and his track rate is 15.4% (1218/7891).
Stables to respect:
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (10 runners): Tremont, Windsor Chariot, Ostrom, Neziha and Two To Tango all come out of this yard, and the trainer is at 14.9% (720/4834) at this track with a hot 20% over the last 100.
L Smith (6 runners): What Once Was in R1, Vanara Princess in R3 and Ziggy Bama in R5. The stable has 17% (776/4561) at the track.
Nathan Hobson (6 runners): Sammie Ellen Boy in R1, Monix and Caribbean Villa in R5, and Mitchell Freedman's rivals in the sprints. Track strike rate is 8.3% (322/3857), so they're more of a watch than a must.

Punty's take: This is a card where the speed map tells you more than the form guide does. Race 1 has two leaders fighting it out, and What Once Was is the one who gets the lead without much fuss. Race 3 is the one where you want to see who grabs the lead early, because Cast A Line is the only named pace and the rest of that field is backmarkers with a fair bit of ground to make up. Race 4 is slow and it tells me the 1600m will be a tactical sprint home, so the horses that settle well and have sectional speed are the ones to look at. Race 5 is a genuine pace with a whole bunch of ON-PACE runners behind Kikkuli, which is exactly the sort of Genuine pace race where the speed gets chewed up and the horses that settle and sprint have a chance. Race 6 is the slow 2400m where Flying Shelby is the only one on the speed, so the stayers get a long look.

Race 1 and Race 3 are the two I'd call the banker types. What Once Was is the chalk and he's been running well at this level, while Tremont drifting in from $5.50 to $1.95 tells you the money has come in hard. Race 2, Race 5 and Race 8 are where the chaos lives, with plenty of runners who could win on the day. Race 7 and Race 6 sit in between with a bit of structure but enough outsiders to keep you honest.

What it means for you: Be aggressive in the early races where the favourites have the numbers, but don't be shy about putting a little on the place. The Big 3 Multi leans on What Once Was, Tremont and Ambitious Achiever, and the sequences are built around the spine of those races. Protect yourself in the wider races. The quaddie is the one with the biggest swing, so keep the tickets tight at the top and wide underneath where the value sits.

Value-wise I'd rather be on a horse at $4 with a good place chance than chasing the $15 outsiders that keep knocking on the door without getting through. The roughies are there for fun, and the good ones have a path to winning rather than just a price.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - What Once Was (Race 1, No.9) — $2.05
Why He's the leader in a race with only one other pace, carries the best recent form on the card, and has been running second and third at the big end of the game.
2 - Tremont (Race 3, No.3) — $1.95
Why Money has poured in from $5.50 to $1.95 and Harry Coffey is on a horse that's been running well in the places. The market has done the hard work for us, so I'm not chasing him at a bigger price.
3 - Ambitious Achiever (Race 4, No.1) — $3.00
Why Slow pace in the 1600m suits a horse with fast sectionals and a strong jockey and trainer combo, and his last start was a clean third at Geelong.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 11.99 = $119.90

Race 1 – bet365 Same Race Multi Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 975m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace. What Once Was is LEADER, Street Painter is LEADER, Ostrom is ON-PACE, Sammie Ellen Boy is ON-PACE, Titus Augustus is ON-PACE, Gamadale Possum is MIDFIELD, Frosted Steele is BACKMARKER, Winna's Sister is UNKNOWN.
Punty read: What Once Was is the bet here and the way I read it, he's the one who'll sit on the lead and be hard to run down. His last start was a second at Warracknabeal in a G4 and the form before that was third and fourth in Ballarat Synthetic. He's 3kg up on his last start, but he's been best at lighter weights, so I'm not worried. Ostrom is the one to watch if the leader gets rolled, a fast-finishing type with a good strike rate with Harry Coffey. Winna's Sister has nose roll on first time and the map is unknown, so I can't say much about her beyond the market. Gamadale Possum is a long way from the leaders and needs everything to go right.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. What Once Was (No.9) — $2.05 / $1.12
Bet $15.00 Win, return $30.75
Prob 45.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.93x Steady since tip
Why The lead is his and he's been placed in his last three starts. Fred W Kersley rides him and the form stands up.
2. Ostrom (No.6) — $4.20 / $1.52
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.2% | Place: 53.6% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.52 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Winna's Sister (No.10) — $4.40 / $1.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.58x Steady since tip
Why Nose roll is on first time and the map is unknown, so she's a question mark. Damien Thornton rides her and the stable runs at 14.7% at this track.

Roughie: Gamadale Possum (No.4) — $15.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.2% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.64x Steady since tip
Why If the leaders go hard and the midfield finishes on fire, she could run into a place. She's a long way back and needs a lot to go right.

Race 2 – Jarrod Arentz Electrical & Solar Solutions Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace. Celtic Spy is ON-PACE and the only one advantaged by the pace. Magna Sententia is MIDFIELD, Carnevale is MIDFIELD, Gangland is ON-PACE, Optimus is ON-PACE, Rentier is ON-PACE, King Koruna is MIDFIELD, Pray For Elegance is BACKMARKER, My Boy Arnie is BACKMARKER.
Punty read: Magna Sententia is the bet here, and the way I see it, the price has come in from $4.80 to $3.90 which says a few people know something. He was second at Hamilton over 1200m, the placed run from his first-up and distance has been consistent. John Allen rides him and the pace should suit him sitting just off the speed. Celtic Spy is the one who'll want to lead and he's come back from a spell with blinkers off and tongue tie on, which can change a horse. Carnevale has blinkers on first time and his last start was a third at Seymour, so she's not one to overlook.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Magna Sententia (No.6) — $3.90 / $1.72
Bet $15.00 Win, return $58.50
Prob 18.3% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why Firming in the market, sitting midfield in a moderate race, and John Allen gets the chance to ride him from a good spot.
2. Celtic Spy (No.3) — $4.00 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.0% | Place: 58.9% | Value: 0.64x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Carnevale (No.2) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers on first time and Eoin Walsh rides her. She's finished in the first three of her last few and the place is where she's most dangerous.

Roughie: Gangland (No.4) — $9.00 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 45.5% | Value: 0.93x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers on first time, Harry Coffey aboard, and a last-start excuse at Ballarat Synthetic (interference) that could mean a bounce back.

Race 3 – Ultima Hotel Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace. Cast A Line is the only named leader. Vanara Princess is ON-PACE and advantaged, Peace Seeker is MIDFIELD and advantaged, Gamadale Paddy is BACKMARKER, She's Loaded is MIDFIELD, Swift Action is BACKMARKER, Bogey Free is UNKNOWN, Tremont is UNKNOWN.
Punty read: Tremont is the bet, and the way I read it, the market has been crying out for him all week. The price has collapsed from $5.50 to $1.95 and that kind of money doesn't come in for nothing. Harry Coffey rides and the trainer's strike rate at the track is strong. He's got ear muffs on pre-race and lugging bit on first time, so there's some gear to watch. The genuine pace means the leaders may be run into the ground, so the horses that settle and finish fast are the ones to look at. Gamadale Paddy is a backmarker who has run second at Mildura and is drifting, which is the sort of thing that gets me interested.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Tremont (No.3) — $1.95 / $1.15
Bet $13.00 Win, return $25.35
Prob 30.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.60x Steady since tip
Why Heavy market support and the best combo on the card for the stable. Harry Coffey is on and he's the one I trust most in this race.
2. Gamadale Paddy (No.11) — $3.80 / $1.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.98x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.60 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. She's Loaded (No.6) — $4.80 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why Dean Yendall rides and she's been placed in her last three starts including two seconds. She's the one who could run into the frame if the leader gets caught.

Roughie: Bogey Free (No.8) — $12.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why C Maher's stable is at 15.1% at the track and the horse has a fresh set of gear, barrier blanket, cross-over nose band and stallion chain on first time. If the pace collapses, he can sneak in from the back.

Race 4 – Footts Swan Hill Demolition Group Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace. Ambitious Achiever is MIDFIELD and advantaged, Studio Artist is MIDFIELD and advantaged, Windsor Chariot is MIDFIELD, Pete The Prophet is MIDFIELD, Town Planner is UNKNOWN, Intervened is MIDFIELD, Efreeti is BACKMARKER, High Performance is BACKMARKER, Poorlittlerichkid is ON-PACE, Ted Percy is BACKMARKER, Red Light Rachel is MIDFIELD.
Punty read: Ambitious Achiever is the bet, and the way I see it, the slow pace in a 1600m suits his style of racing. He was third at Geelong in a S6 last start, and he has fast sectionals on the data. Linda Meech and Smiley Chan form a combo at 27.8% which is a strong return on the card. The main danger is Windsor Chariot, who has been running well and is at a fair price, and Town Planner who ran a sharp second in the markets this week.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Ambitious Achiever (No.1) — $3.00 / $1.45
Bet $13.00 Win, return $39.00
Prob 26.8% | Place: 63.0% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why The slow pace suits a horse with fast sectionals, and the form at 1600m is consistent. Linda Meech rides and the combo is the best on the card.
2. Windsor Chariot (No.8) — $5.00 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Town Planner (No.13) — $5.50 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.7% | Place: 41.2% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why Billy Egan rides for a trainer with a hot track record and he's been racing through the middle distances at Colac and Tatura. He could hit the frame if the speed holds.

Roughie: Pete The Prophet (No.5) — $11.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.1% | Place: 33.7% | Value: 1.00x Steady since tip
Why Fred W Kersley rides for L Smith and the horse has been running on in 1600m races. He's a midfield runner in a slow race, so he needs the leaders to fold.

Race 5 – BusBiz.net.au (Bm62)

Race type: Benchmark 62, 975m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace. Kikkuli is the only LEADER. Killiana is ON-PACE, Ziggy Bama is ON-PACE, Maximillius is ON-PACE, Do It Now is ON-PACE, Caribbean Villa is ON-PACE, Monix is MIDFIELD, Commands Success is MIDFIELD, Wareo Road is MIDFIELD.
Punty read: Killiana is the bet and the way I read it, the market has drifted from $2.65 to $3.20 which doesn't scare me. She's been bumped and raced wide in her last start but she's been fast in the sprints and she's coming back from a spell. Eoin Walsh rides and the stable has a hot strike rate at the track. The weight is the issue, with the data flagging her as a better horse at 56 to 58kg, so I'll be watching the handicapper's weight carefully. Ziggy Bama is fast and fit, a 1000m winner last start at Warrnambool, and Fred W Kersley rides.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Killiana (No.6) — $3.30 / $1.45
Bet $10.50 Win, return $34.65
Prob 22.8% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why Her track record shows she's good at 1000m, with a win in her 1st-up start and a strong T-HOT trainer over the last 100. The drift is a question I can live with.
2. Ziggy Bama (No.3) — $3.50 / $1.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.50 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Caribbean Villa (No.9) — $7.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 38.2% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why Cory Parish rides and he was second at Horsham over 1100m last start. The 60kg weight is a flag but he's been running well at the right trip.

Roughie: Do It Now (No.5) — $11.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.5% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.50x Steady since tip
Why Damien Thornton rides and last start he won at Echuca over 1000m. If the leaders blow up in a genuine pace, he's the one who can run through a gap.

Race 6 – Pooles Accountants & Tax Specialists (Bm62)

Race type: Benchmark 62, 2400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace. Flying Shelby is ON-PACE and advantaged, Motiver is MIDFIELD, Verifier is BACKMARKER, Legend Beast is BACKMARKER, Only Opera is BACKMARKER, Three Reel Roses is MIDFIELD, Kawhia is MIDFIELD, King Kauffo is BACKMARKER, Milady is BACKMARKER.
Punty read: Verifier is the bet, and the way I see it, the slow pace in a 2400m race is made for a horse who can sit back and run home. His last start was a second at Swan Hill over 2400m, and the market has him as the favourite at $3.70. Dean Yendall is not on him, John Allen rides and the stable is at a solid rate. There's a tongue tie on again, which I've noted. Legend Beast is the danger who's been racing staying trips and took a second at Warrnambool over 3100m, and he drops 6kg from last start.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.00 pool)

1. Verifier (No.7) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet $7.00 Win, return $25.90
Prob 20.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why Staying trip with a last start that was close at Swan Hill, John Allen up and a horse who knows the 2400m. Tongue tie on again is the one thing I'd watch.
2. Legend Beast (No.1) — $4.40 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.80 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Only Opera (No.6) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Declan Bates rides and he's been running on at the end of the race. He's a backmarker so he needs the leaders to tire, which the slow pace is designed to prevent.

Roughie: Three Reel Roses (No.9) — $13.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.8% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why Winkers off again and a third at Mt Gambier over 3150m last start. He's a staying type who will get a run home if the leaders are in trouble.

Race 7 – McLardy McShane Insurance Swan Hill (Bm62)

Race type: Benchmark 62, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace. Dealer Sing is LEADER. Habitual is MIDFIELD and advantaged, Switch Hit is MIDFIELD, Great Prosperity is MIDFIELD, His Finest Hour is BACKMARKER, Callistemon is MIDFIELD, Blacklist is ON-PACE, Jawsome Rob is MIDFIELD, No Overtaking is BACKMARKER, Parkrun is BACKMARKER, Poetic Storm is BACKMARKER.
Punty read: Switch Hit is the bet and the way I see it, he's the horse with the best combo of distance and strong recent form. He ran second at Kilmore over 1607m last start and the market has eased from a possible blowout to $5.00. Dean Yendall rides and the horse has strong distance form. The weight is a flag with the data noting he's been struggling at 60 to 62kg, so the each-way is the right way to play him. Dealer Sing is the one who wants the lead and will set the pace.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Switch Hit (No.5) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $45.50 if it wins ($32.50 win + $13.00 place), $13.00 if it only places
Prob 21.3% | Place: 53.6% | Value: 1.06x Steady since tip
Why Second at Kilmore over the same trip and a strong 6 starts at the distance, with Dean Yendall aboard. The each-way lets me protect the place while he's in the frame.
2. Dealer Sing (No.3) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.82x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. His Finest Hour (No.1) — $7.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why Harry Coffey rides and the horse has a clear run at the distance. He's been placed at 1600m and his market is firming.

Roughie: Great Prosperity (No.4) — $11.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.8% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.19x Steady since tip
Why Damien Thornton rides and the horse has run three thirds from its last few starts at the trip. A genuine pace suits a horse who settles midfield and runs on.

Race 8 – Bottle-O Xmas Races Friday 20th November Book Now (Bm62)

Race type: Benchmark 62, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace. Baganov is LEADER, Gift Of Oratory is LEADER, Sir Loyne is ON-PACE, Mr Butt's Boats is ON-PACE, Succaforyou is ON-PACE and advantaged, Neziha is MIDFIELD and advantaged, Two To Tango is MIDFIELD, Apocalypse is ON-PACE, Costae is ON-PACE, Bakersbend is ON-PACE, Annotate is MIDFIELD, Shalailed is MIDFIELD, Yoomee Wonder is BACKMARKER, Somebody Told Me is MIDFIELD, Share The Music is MIDFIELD, The Bantam is MIDFIELD, Grande Terre is MIDFIELD.
Punty read: Two To Tango is the bet, and the way I read it, he's the most consistent horse in a race that's wide open. He was seventh at Pakenham Synthetic over 1200m last start, but the sectionals are fast and he's had a good run at the trip. Eoin Walsh rides for the Hayes stable which has strong numbers today. Neziha is the danger, the 1st-up winner at Pakenham Synthetic who's now 2kg up, and Harry Coffey is aboard. Share The Music is the one who has been placed twice recently and has form at 1200m.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Two To Tango (No.12) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $45.50 if it wins ($32.50 win + $13.00 place), $13.00 if it only places
Prob 19.6% | Place: 56.4% | Value: 0.98x Steady since tip
Why Fast sectionals in his last start and a strong place chance. Eoin Walsh rides and the stable is one of the best on the card.
2. Neziha (No.9) — $3.10 / $1.52
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.9% | Place: 59.7% | Value: 0.52x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Share The Music (No.6) — $10.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why Third at Mildura over 1200m last start and Cian Macredmond rides. He's been placed and the price is good enough to keep him in the mix.

Roughie: Apocalypse (No.13) — $10.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.3% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why Last start was a win at Mildura over 1400m and Alana Kelly rides. If the leaders go hard and the pace fades, he can run into the frame from a sitting position.

SEQUENCE LANES

EARLY QUADDIE (R1–R4)

Smart: 9,6 / 6,3,2,4 / 3,11,6 / 1,8,13 (72 combos x $0.3472 = $25.00) -- 34.7% flexi
Punty's take: R1 and R3 are tight around the favourites, but R2 and R4 are wide open and that's where the ticket gets its life. The flexi sits at 34.7%, which is a solid play for a $25 outlay, and it's a ticket that pays well if the favourites are beaten in one leg.

QUADDIE (R5–R8)

Smart: 6,3 / 7,6,1 / 5,3,1,4 / 9,12,6 (72 combos x $0.4444 = $32.00) -- 44.4% flexi
Punty's take: Every leg here is open, so this is a high-risk ticket that will pay big if it lands. R7 and R8 are the tightest, with Switch Hit and Two To Tango carrying the weight. The flexi at 33.3% gives it some room, but you'll need a $5 to $10 winner somewhere to make it worth the effort.

BIG 6 (R3–R8)

Smart: 3,11,6,8 / 1,8,13,5 / 6,3,4,9 / 7,6,1,9 / 5,3,1,4 / 9,12,6,13 (4096 combos x $0.00122 = $5.00) -- 0.12% flexi
Punty's take: Entertainment only. Five of the six legs are open races, so this ticket is a long shot in every sense. The flexi of 0.13% sits above the 0.10% floor, but the hit rate is thin and I'd treat it as a bit of fun rather than a serious play.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Blinkers go on for Sammie Ellen Boy
First time in blinkers for the horse, 9 days off, and the last two starts were a slow start at Deniliquin and a wide run at Mildura. He's 2kg up on the last start. Watch the early pace.

2 - Tremont's market has stormed in
Opened at $5.50 and now sits at $1.95 with heavy support. Harry Coffey is in the saddle and the stable is running at 20% over the last 100 rides.

3 - Vanara Princess is a long way out to $151
Drifted from $41.00 to $151.00 with a 2kg drop from last start and an ON-PACE map in a genuine pace race. It's either a sign of something bad or a sign that nobody's looking, and I'm going with the second.

THE RATBAG REPORT

Three legs of a quaddie and a banker that hits on a Tuesday is the closest thing to a holiday most of us get, so enjoy the ride and keep the tickets sensible. Swan Hill has more surprises than a Sunday roast at a Jehovah's Witness house, so stay sharp.
