PUNTY EARLY MAIL – Ashburton (2026-10-30)
For all of Punty's tips for Ashburton, head to https://punty.ai/tips/ashburton-2026-10-30
Rightio Legends, Ashburton is sitting on a Soft 5 with the rail out 3m, nine races from 1200m to 2200m, and it's a day for the staying types and the grinders. Grab a coffee, because this one needs reading properly.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Ashburton, 1200m to 2200m card
Rail: Out 3m
Official going: Soft 5
Weather: Overcast, gusts 18.5km/h
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Mostly moderate to genuine early pace across the card. Race 1 and Race 2 are slow to moderate, Race 3 and Race 7 have a clear lone leader, and Race 4 has two fighting for the front.
Jockeys to follow:
Hayley Hassman: rides White Palace in Race 1, the pick I'm putting money on, and has seven rides on the card.
Donovan Cooper: seven rides, with Imelda Melody in Race 5 and Lifetime and Lovelock on the card, so he's a busy bloke in the staying races.
Bridget Grylls: eight rides, including The Peony Xpress, the most likely early speed in Race 1.
Stables to respect:
Anna Furlong (10 runners): the biggest operation on the card, spread across Races 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
Andrew Carston (9 runners): runners in Races 2, 6, 7 and 8, with Steezy and Hard Attack carrying the stable's Race 6 hopes.
M P Mccann (7 runners): Marokopa Falls is the one to note in Race 6, and the stable has a runner in most of the staying races.
Punty's take:
The speed map is where Ashburton gets interesting. Race 1 is a slow-paced two-mile crawl where nobody really wants to lead, and that suits the horses that can sit back and pounce late on a soft track. Race 3 is the mirror image, with Shawshank as the only leader on the map, so if he gets away clean the rest of the field is chasing. Race 4 is a moderate sprint with Givemeadance and Iceland Poppy both wanting the front, so that fight could be a gift to anything sitting handy. Race 7 has Lovelock as the only leader on the 2200m, and that's a race built for a tempo ride. The Race 2 and Race 6 maps are wide open, which makes them the chaos races of the day. Race 8 looks like a bunch of runners who want to sit behind a moderate pace and wait for the kick.
What it means for you:
Be aggressive in Race 1 with White Palace, because the slow pace and the back-marker sit suit him, and this is the one race I'd actually put real money on. Protect your bankroll in Race 2, where Nameless is the only bet I'm making and the rest of the field is open enough to bite you. The staying races are where the value sits if you can read the soft track, but the locked bets are the ones to follow. Anything else on the card is a watch-only race for me today, so don't go chasing.
Race 1 – Hygain Stayers Challenge Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 2200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on the map, with The Peony Xpress the likeliest to find the front from barrier 11 and nobody else really pushing for it. That sets up a sit behind the speed for the handy types, but White Palace is a back-marker from barrier 6 and needs the pace to pick up a little to get into the finish. The draw is on the wide side for the leader and the back-half runners Not A Doubt and Wanderin Charm, who both need cover. My read is the slow tempo hurts the front-runners less than people think on this soft track.
Punty read: White Palace is the bet, and it's the bet because he's the most credible horse in the field on the numbers and the form. He's settling back from barrier 6, and his last three starts were a third at Phar Lap Raceway over 2200m, a fourth at Riccarton Park Synthetic over 2200m and a fifth at Riccarton Park Synthetic over 1600m. He has yet to win on soft, so I'm not claiming a soft pedigree. Wanderin Charm is the danger from midfield, and Not A Doubt is the one I'd keep an eye on if the pace collapses. Hayley Hassman has the ride on White Palace and her strike rate at Ashburton is solid.
Top 3 + Roughie (Total stake $8.50)
1. White Palace (No.8) — $3.60 / $1.62
Bet $8.50 Win, return $30.60
Prob 19.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why The sit-and-pounce horse on a slow-paced staying track, with a good closing run at 2200m and a best of third in his last start over the trip.
2. Wanderin Charm (No.7) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Not A Doubt (No.2) — $6.00 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.1% | Place: 33.1% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why A back-marker from barrier 9 who needs the pace to hold up, and I'd want him in the frame but not betting on him.
Roughie: Patch Of Sunshine (No.5) — $21.00 / $4.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.3% | Place: 16.7% | Value: 0.69x Steady since tip
Why Back-marker from barrier 2 with a long run of staying starts, so if the race turns into a genuine test late he's the one who could sneak in.
Race 2 – Ken Body Plumbing / Isaac & Lacy Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace on paper, with a crowded front on the map (Potentially, Queen's Randsom, Perfect Timing and The Boss Girls) but no one who maps to lead outright. Potentially and Queen's Randsom are drawn wide and have to work to cross, which could cost them ground. Whisk and Galway Bay are back-half runners drawn wide and need cover or a bit of luck. Nameless, from barrier 1, settles midfield and gets the run he wants on the rail, and that shape suits him.
Punty read: Nameless is the one I'm backing, and the reasons are simple: the best win and place numbers in the race, a closing run on the rail, and a trainer who's getting a runner in the zone. His last start was a fourth at Riccarton Park 1400m, and he has been held up in his past runs, which means the shape here should suit him better. War Paint is the horse to respect with a strong sectional and three recent placings, and Percival has been running on at the finish. The danger is the wide-drawn front runners, which could be a problem if they go too hard early.
Top 3 + Roughie (Total stake $9.00)
1. Nameless (No.5) — $3.30 / $1.57
Bet $9.00 Win, return $29.70
Prob 25.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.82x Steady since tip
Why Settles midfield from barrier 1 and gets the rail run he needs, and his trainer and jockey combination has been ticking over.
2. War Paint (No.2) — $4.60 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 45.4% | Value: 0.63x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Percival (No.1) — $7.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 28.4% | Value: 0.62x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker from barrier 5 who has finished second on this track before and can finish strongly if the pace holds up.
Roughie: Queen Courtney (No.6) — $12.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.2% | Place: 24.2% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 12 with a wide draw, so she has to find a run, but a fast finish from midfield could get her into the picture.
Race 3 – Agraforum Growing Innovation Hcp
Race type: Open, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Shawshank the only leader on the map from barrier 5, and nearest pressure coming from Richard Stomper and Villasanti. Esperimento is drawn wide and has to work to cross, and Sefton from barrier 7 needs cover. This is a race where the lone leader gets a soft lead if he can get out, so the on-pace runners will be chasing from behind.
Punty read: No locked selection for this race today, so I'm not putting a dollar on it. Villasanti sits on the speed and has the strongest sectional on the card, Stonybreck is the class horse from midfield, and Shawshank is the one who gets to set the tempo. The danger is the lone leader being run down by the closers, so I'll be watching how the early tempo plays out.
Race 4 – PlaceMakers Ashburton Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with two horses fighting for the front in Givemeadance from barrier 1 and Iceland Poppy from barrier 6. Givemeadance has the inside draw and an easy path, so that fight is in his favour. Swiss Belt, Imperial Queen and Fast Net are wide-drawn runners who need cover, and the shape suits the ones sitting handy on the speed.
Punty read: No locked selection today, so no bet from me in this one. Noivern is the strongest on paper, sitting on the speed from barrier 4 with a third at Ashburton 1200m in his last start, and I'd want him in your head. Bucket List and Leica Ace are the next best on the map. Givemeadance could get a soft lead, but that's a risky race to bet on.
Race 5 – Ashburton Long Run Iron Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Zain as the only leader from barrier 6, with Lifetime and Vaultique from barrier 9 and barrier 2 the nearest pressure. Letschat and Imelda Melody are wide-drawn back-half runners who need cover. The lone leader is the one to watch.
Punty read: No locked selection here, so I'm staying out. Ataahualuciddream is the one the map and the form point to from midfield, with a second at Phar Lap Raceway 1200m in the last start. Imelda Melody has a sectional fastest tag and has been bumped in her recent runs. Zain can make the running if he gets clear.
Race 6 – Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with a crowded front, Steezy from barrier 13 and Al Azhar from barrier 14 both drawn wide and needing to work to cross. Eternal Light and Lady Georgiana are on the speed from barrier 10 and barrier 6. Misspeebee and Daphne Dior are back-half runners drawn wide.
Punty read: No locked selection today. Marokopa Falls heads the map and the form lines, with a third at Phar Lap Raceway 1200m last start, and the big thing is the tempo. Novelette has run a sixth at Ashburton 1200m recently and is the one to watch from midfield. Eternal Light won at Phar Lap Raceway 1200m last start, so he's the speed type to respect.
Race 7 – Plumbing World Ashburton (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 2200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Lovelock the only leader from barrier 15, and Strong (barrier 18) the nearest pressure from a wide draw. Devil In Disguise, Sailor Sam, Warrior Of War and El Fuego are back-half runners who need cover.
Punty read: No locked selection here. Hey Dana heads the map from midfield, with a win at Ashburton 1600m on the last start, and Cocomora had won over the same track a start earlier. Lovelock is the one with the lone lead and the tempo to dictate, so that's the one to watch.
Race 8 – Kaiso Syndicate (Bm75)
Race type: Benchmark 75, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with three horses who could take the front, Treybon, Cashla Bay and Queen Of Sheba. Champagne Diblu, Canasta and Saint Brigid are wide-drawn back-half runners who need cover. The shape favours the midfield horses who can sit and wait.
Punty read: No locked selection here, so no bet from me. Maybe Diva heads the form lines from the backmarker spot and won at Ashburton 1400m's neighbour track recently, which is the one to watch. Champagne Diblu is the one who has won on this track before, with three wins from three starts on the track. Cashla Bay is a speed type to be wary of.
Race 9 – Kerry Estreich Farrier (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Gibby Pay Cheque the only leader from barrier 15, and a lot of nearest pressure from the on-pace runners. Arctic Jewel, Retrostar, Thunderfist and Ardee Boy are back-half runners with a wide draw.
Punty read: No locked selection today. Arctic Jewel heads the map and the form from backmarker, with a fifth at Ashburton 1200m last start, and Bellish Boy has the record on this track with a win at Ashburton 1400m. Gibby Pay Cheque is the lone leader and the one who could take them along.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Weight jump in Race 1
Imperial Thinker and Patch Of Sunshine are both up 2kg from their last start, and the data says both are best at lighter weights. That's a fair reason to be cautious about them.
2 - Wide and bumped
The Peony Xpress has been bumped and raced wide in his last two starts, so the early speed he'd need in Race 1 might not come easy from barrier 11.
3 - Race 9 weight warning
The Big Picture is 0 wins from 2 at 60kg, so if you're looking for a weight-based danger, he's the one to think about.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Ashburton's a soft-track grind today, so pick your spots and don't chase. Back the locked ones and enjoy the rest of the card from the bench.
