Rightio Ticket Munchers, Ipswich is a Heavy 10 with 151mm down in the last week, so this is a card for people who read the form and not the nicknames. Seven races, a lot of wet-track horses who have never been asked to run in the mud, and a Race 1 favourite who has been bet in from $2.90. Grab a coffee, pull up the form, and let's get into it.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Ipswich, 1100m to 2190m card
Rail: +6m Entire
Official going: Heavy 10 (Nil last 24hrs, 151mm last 7 days)
Weather: Fine, live gusts 22.2km/h
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Races 1 and 2 are Slow Pace affairs with nobody genuinely wanting the lead. Races 3, 4, 6 and 7 are Moderate, with two-pony fights in 4 and 6. Race 5 is the only Genuine Pace race, with Rockrata the lone map leader.
Jockeys to follow:
Ben E Thompson: 7 rides on the card, the most of anyone. He has Backhander in Race 2, Life After Love in Race 4 and Switz in Race 6, so he's in the thick of the action all day.
Jag Guthmann-Chester: 5 rides, including Dragon Link, our Race 4 pick, and Mission Of Joy in Race 5.
Jett Newman: 4 rides, headlined by Valouri, our Race 7 selection, and Highland Kitty in Race 1.
Stables to respect:
M J Dunn (6 runners): Valouri and Doingiteasy both carry the M J Dunn colours in Race 7, and Field Of Clans is in Race 3. Andrew Mallyon rides two of them, and the stable's jockey combo is working.
T J Gollan (6 runners): Impact Zone and Barrelling both run in Race 6, and Life After Love and Texas are also in the stable. Impact Zone is our Race 6 selection.
Chris & Corey Munce (6 runners): Pinot Pirate, Olivoni and Caishen are among their six, and Pinot Pirate has to be respected as the second map leader in Race 4.

Punty's take: Ipswich on a Heavy 10 is a place where the speed isn't always the answer, and I'll be watching who wants to lead. Race 1 and Race 2 both look like slow tempos, which hands the sit to the handy types and makes the backmarkers gamble. Race 4 is the one the market has already decided, with Dragon Link shortened to $1.27 and nobody else in the race about to frighten it. Race 5 is the only real pace race, and Rockrata is the sole map leader, so if he gets his way the closers have the biggest chance of the day. Race 6 has two runners fighting for the lead, and that's where I'd expect the sort of chaos that keeps the quaddie interesting.

What it means for you: Be aggressive on Kindred in Race 1 and Down Under Stunnah in Race 2 because both are on tempos that suit horses sitting midfield. Race 4 is the banker-ish race of the card, but the price of Dragon Link is so short that I'd rather protect my bankroll and keep the stake light. Race 5 and Race 6 are the chaos legs, so I'm happy to take the bigger prices there, and Race 7 has Valouri in a race I can see playing out for a midfield runner. The Big 3 are the three most likely winners on the card, and the quaddie is a risky ticket built for a day when the favourites don't all win.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Kindred (Race 1, No.6) — $2.90
Why The market has tightened on him and his sectionals look the quickest in the field. He's stuck at the back in a slow race, which is a real worry, but a second at Eagle Farm over 1830m last start shows he's not far off.
2 - Down Under Stunnah (Race 2, No.2) — $3.70
Why Sits midfield in a race where the tempo helps midfielders, and his track record at Ipswich (1 win from 7 starts at this track on the Track line of 7:1-2-1) backs up his claim on this surface.
3 - Dragon Link (Race 4, No.1) — $1.27
Why The leader in a race with only one other map leader, and the price is short but he's the one horse who controls the race from barrier 10.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 13.63 = $136.30

Race 1 – TAB Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 2190m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on paper, with no runner mapping to lead or sit handy, so the first few out will be hard to pick. Panzer Ready from barrier 8 and The Huttmen from barrier 7 are the back-half runners who need cover or luck. Kindred from barrier 3 sits back and needs the speed to come to him, which is the shape working against my top pick.
Punty read: Kindred is the bet. He's a $2.90 chance with a 70.0% place figure on the stats line and he's got the closing sectionals to win this grind. The shape is against him, but he finished second at Eagle Farm over 1830m last start and that's a race he can win from the back. Highland Kitty is a danger from the midfield with the quickest time in the race and a 3kg rise that she has to carry well. The Huttmen is a horse to watch for the cheap place, though he's yet to win on soft and his last start was a slow beginning.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Kindred (No.6) — $2.90 / $1.30
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), collects $31.50 if it wins ($21.75 win + $9.75 place), $9.75 if it only places
Prob 31.1% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why Clocked the fastest 600m and 400m sectionals in the field, and a second at Eagle Farm last start. He's a closer in a slow race, which is the trade-off, but his class and sectionals are good enough to get the job done.
2. Highland Kitty (No.5) — $2.60 / $1.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 30.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. The Huttmen (No.8) — $6.00 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.64x Steady since tip
Why Andrew Mallyon has a strong record at Ipswich and this one is a back-marker who can run on in a slow race. He's yet to win on soft, so he's a place play at best.
Roughie: Whiskey Warrior (No.3) — $11.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why If the shape stays as it is, the back half comes into the race, and he's run second at Toowoomba over 2180m with a solid record on the Good track. A slow pace hands him the sit he needs.

Race 2 – Great Northern Hcp

Race type: Class 3, 2190m
Map & tempo: Slow pace expected, with nobody mapping to lead or sit handy. Backhander from barrier 9 and Chance De Lune from barrier 8 are the wide runners who need cover, and Down Under Stunnah from barrier 5 is in the right spot to settle midfield.
Punty read: Down Under Stunnah is the bet, and it's the shape that makes this one. He sits midfield, the expected pace helps midfielders, and his Track line of 7:1-2-1 says he's at home on this surface. His last-up run was a seventh at Eagle Farm after being bumped, and he's been second at Ipswich over 1965m most recently. Disgruntled is one to watch with a tongue tie going on for the first time, and his last start at Gold Coast was a third from a rough trip.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Down Under Stunnah (No.2) — $3.70 / $1.57
Bet $7.50 Win, return $27.75
Prob 19.9% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why The shape is his friend, and his most recent start was second at Ipswich over 1965m. He's a midfield horse in a race where the tempo suits midfield runners, and the track record backs him up.
2. Disgruntled (No.4) — $5.00 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.93x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.80 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Backhander (No.1) — $4.80 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why Won at Dubbo over 2200m last start and sits midfield in a race with a slow tempo. Ben E Thompson has a 2kg rise to deal with, but the form is there.
Roughie: Woodland Wonder (No.6) — $15.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.8% | Place: 23.0% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why The path is simple: the front runners wilt in a slow race and a backmarker with three placings from her last three starts can run on. Her Dist record of 10:1-1-1 says she likes the trip.

Race 3 – Allclass Kubota Mdn Hcp

Race type: Maiden, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, but seven runners could find the front, so nobody gets it uncontested. Brazen Act from barrier 6 sits handy and the shape helps him. Hills Of Minto from barrier 7 is on the same line, though he's hurt by the expected pace. Logan Downs from barrier 14 must work to cross and gets the wide draw penalty.
Punty read: Brazen Act is the bet. He's a sit-handy runner in a race where the pace helps and he's got a Track line of 1:0-1-0 along with a Dist record of 3:0-0-1. Blinkers come off for the first time and his tongue tie goes back on. Field Of Clans comes in off the back of an Ballina win, so the back line is in play, but Brazen Act's price and form are the stronger play. Hills Of Minto is a 214-day spell horse who's gone first-up with gear changes, so he's a risk.

Top 3 + Roughie ($9.50 pool)

1. Brazen Act (No.1) — $5.00 / $1.95
Bet $9.50 Each Way ($4.75W + $4.75P), collects $33.01 if it wins ($23.75 win + $9.26 place), $9.26 if it only places
Prob 15.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why The shape favours him and he's had plenty of placings, with 0-4-4 from 12 starts. Blinkers off and tongue tie back on is a combo I'm happy to see.
2. Field Of Clans (No.11) — $3.90 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.3% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.56x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Hills Of Minto (No.2) — $7.50 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why Three gear changes first up after 214 days, with a sectionals fastest 600m rating. He's a value bet in a race that could be tight.
Roughie: Logan Downs (No.4) — $9.50 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why Sits handy and has been a runner-up at Kilcoy over 1200m. The wide barrier is the problem, but a combo of J@trk 14.4% and 26.4% with the trainer gives him a shot.

Race 4 – Cruice Creations Hcp

Race type: Class 1, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Dragon Link from barrier 10 and Pinot Pirate from barrier 12 contesting the lead. Dragon Link has the better draw to win the fight, and Pinot Pirate has to work from the outside. That hands the trail to Meet George and Life After Love, but the shape is against Dragon Link.
Punty read: Dragon Link is the bet, and I'm staking him because he's the one who controls the race. The shape is against him, but his form is strong, with Eagle Farm 1000m and Deagon 1050m both wins. He's the price of the day at $1.27, so I'm not going to pretend he's a bargain, but the stake is light. Life After Love is the danger from the midfield, with the fastest 600m sectional in the race and a place value that the market has ignored.

Top 3 + Roughie ($4.50 pool)

1. Dragon Link (No.1) — $1.50 / place tote
Bet $4.50 Win, return $6.75
Prob 19.3% | Place: 45.5% | Value: 0.29x Steady since tip
Why Two wins from his last three starts with the Eagle Farm 1000m win last start. He's a leader from barrier 10 with a J@trk strike rate of 14.4% and a combo of 26.4% with Matthew Hoysted.
2. Life After Love (No.3) — $8.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.14x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.70 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Pinot Pirate (No.15) — $7.50 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why Two wins in his last two starts at Gatton and Gold Coast. He's the second leader and his fastest 400m sectional makes him a real danger if the front pair go too hard.
Roughie: Meet George (No.2) — $10.00 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why Sits handy with a fast 600m rating and a Doomben 1000m win on the Good track two starts back. Desleigh Forster has him at the right fitness.

Race 5 – The Don Moore Memorial Race

Race type: Benchmark 58, 1350m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Rockrata from barrier 8 as the only map leader, so the front is his if he wants it. Odin's Mount from barrier 12 and Copper Star from barrier 14 are wide and must work to cross. Transgress from barrier 6 sits handy and the shape is against him.
Punty read: Transgress is the bet and I'm not shy about it. He's a Class 1 winner with a 1350m-plus win record and he's got a clear run out of the wide barriers. The shape is against him, but he's a handy runner who has already won at Lismore over 1310m. Odin's Mount is a danger from barrier 12, with the fastest time in the race and a Heavy 3:1-0-0 record. Mission Of Joy is the one who could punish a slow finish in the market.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Transgress (No.5) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), collects $61.88 if it wins ($45.00 win + $16.88 place), $16.88 if it only places
Prob 13.4% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why Won at Lismore 1310m last start and has a Class 1 win record. He's held up in a slow race, but a handy runner with class can win in a Genuine pace race.
2. Odin's Mount (No.4) — $5.00 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.1% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.60x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Mission Of Joy (No.9) — $3.50 / $1.52
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.40x Steady since tip
Why Second at Eagle Farm 1200m last start and won at Sunshine Coast 1200m before that. Jag Guthmann-Chester has the leg-up and the combo with Matthew Hoysted is strong.
Roughie: Wootton You Know (No.12) — $10.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Money has come for him, with the price going from $14.00 to $10.00. Sits handy with a Good track win, and a genuine pace race can give a runner like him the chance to pick up the pieces.

Race 6 – The Springfield Mo Men Fundraiser Hcp

Race type: Class 2, 1350m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Switz from barrier 6 and Ninjitzou from barrier 3 fighting for the lead. Switz is the stronger of the two, and that leaves Impact Zone from barrier 12 sitting handy but wide. Ten Good Reasons from the back is the runner the shape helps the most.
Punty read: Impact Zone is the bet. He's been backed in from $7.00 to $5.50, the money is coming, and he's got a Heavy 2:1-1-0 record and a 2nd-up record of 3:2-0-1. The shape is against him, but a horse with class and a strong closing record can win from a wide draw. Switz is the danger from the lead, and Barrelling is a value runner with the fastest 600m and 400m sectionals in the race.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Impact Zone (No.7) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet $7.50 Each Way ($3.75W + $3.75P), collects $28.69 if it wins ($20.63 win + $8.06 place), $8.06 if it only places
Prob 16.1% | Place: 46.0% | Value: 0.89x Steady since tip
Why Heavy 2:1-1-0 and 2nd-up 3:2-0-1. The money has come, with the price falling from $7.00 to $5.50. Daniel Moor and T J Gollan are a good pair.
2. Switz (No.4) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Barrelling (No.2) — $5.00 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why Sectionals fastest in the race on L600, L400 and time, and a Dist record of 8:2-1-1. Ryan Maloney rides, and the T J Gollan stable is strong.
Roughie: Cuesta (No.6) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 26.2% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why Won at Sunshine Coast Inner 1000m last start, and a Heavy 1:0-0-0 record means he's got some form in the mud. Tiffani Brooker rides and he's a place chance if the leaders go wrong.

Race 7 – Mumma Jean Is 80 Hcp

Race type: Class 1, 1690m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with no runner mapping to lead, so four runners could take it up. Valouri from barrier 7 sits midfield and the expected pace helps him. Silent Answer from the back is also helped, and the wide runners at the back of the field face a long run.
Punty read: Valouri is the bet. The shape helps him, his Good track record shows he can run through the mud, and Jett Newman has a J-HOT rate over the last 100 rides. The market has drifted from $3.10 to $3.80, which is a cooling signal, but I'm happy to take it. Doingiteasy is the danger from the midfield with a J@trk of 14.6% and a Heavy 2:0-0-1 record.

Top 3 + Roughie ($5.00 pool)

1. Valouri (No.11) — $4.00 / $1.70
Bet $5.00 Win, return $20.00
Prob 18.3% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why Good 5:0-3-0 with three placings and two seconds from his last three starts. Jett Newman is hot, and the shape helps a midfield horse in a Moderate pace.
2. Doingiteasy (No.5) — $7.50 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.50 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Cryption's Desire (No.2) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.56x Steady since tip
Why Second at Ipswich 1666m last start, and a 2kg rise that he's carrying well. The Track record of 3:0-2-1 is strong.
Roughie: Sorrenti (No.4) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why Won at Coffs Harbour and ran third at Gold Coast 1400m last start. Starts at barrier 19, which is the hard way to go, but a Moderate pace gives a closer a run home.

SEQUENCE LANES

QUADDIE (R4–R7)

Smart: 1,3,15,9 / 5,4,9,12 / 7,4,2,1 / 11,5,2,4 (256 combos x $0.3125 = $80.00) -- 31.2% flexi
Punty's take: Dragon Link keeps Race 4 tight, but the other three legs are all open races, so this is a wide ticket with a lot of combinations. The 31.2% flexi clears the floor, but it's a lottery ticket for the most part, so treat it as entertainment rather than the main event.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Hills Of Minto's three gear changes
Bar plates, blinkers and the Hanoverian nose band all come off first time for Hills Of Minto, and he's back 214 days after his last run. His first-up record is 1:0-1-0, so the gear change is a real question mark for the market.

2 - Texas is the market mover in Race 3
Texas has gone from $21.00 to $8.00 and the market is calling it HEAVY. Blinkers come off and tongue tie goes on for the first time, and the stable record at Ipswich is 17.1% from 1907 rides.

3 - Ben E Thompson is everywhere
Seven rides on a Heavy 10 card is more than a Bunnings sausage sizzle at 9am on a Saturday, and I'd be surprised if he doesn't have a winner before the last race.

FINAL WORD FROM THE CHAOS KITCHEN

Back the favourites with a bit of respect and the outsiders with a bit of nerve. If the rain comes down and the track turns to porridge, I'll be the bloke yelling at the telly about which horse just got stuck in the muck.
