Rightio Legends, Wagga on a Good 4 with eight races, 99 runners and three scratchings, and the speed on this card is thinner than a Sunday arvo at the TAB. Half the fields have one genuine galloper or none at all, so the wise move is to pick your spots and let the chaos races come to you. Grab a coffee, get comfortable, and let's have a look at what the day holds.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Wagga, 1000m to 2500m card
Rail: True (the data gives no rail position, so I'm not guessing one)
Official going: Good 4
Weather: Fine, gusts 14.8km/h
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Race 1, 5, 6 and 7 are a mix of moderate paces with the speed shared around. Race 2, 3 and 4 are Genuine Pace races where one horse can grab the front. Race 8 is moderate with two fighting for the lead.
Jockeys to follow:
Blaike Mc Dougall: six rides, including Tabor in R1, Ditterich in R8 and Masakari in R3, so he's got a finger in most of the pies.
Louise Day: six rides, with Classic Touch in R3 and Mathrin in R7 two of the more interesting runners on the card.
Pierre Boudvillain: six rides, with Surreal Retirement in R4 the key one, and he also has Cando Attitude in R7 and Howie Do It in R8.
Stables to respect:
Craig Weeding (6 runners): Magnus Maximus and Richy Ric in R4, Hazardous in R5 and Paparazzo in R7 give them depth across the card.
Doug Gorrel (6 runners): Iconic Rose, Sunroe, Perfectly Good and Daze Off are spread through R3, R6 and R7, so they'll be in the thick of it.
Darrell Burnet (5 runners): Denbury in R2 and Confrontational in R7 are their best shots, and Rasloc in R6 is worth a look.

Punty's take: Where the speed sits is the big question of the day. Race 2 has Inspiritu as the only genuine leader, so if he gets his own way the rest of that field is chasing shadows. Race 3 has Scorched Lane uncontested on the front, and Race 4 has Surreal Retirement on the lead from barrier 16, which is a long way to come from the gate. The middle of the card is a different beast. Races 5 through 8 all have two or more horses fighting for the front, and when two blokes want the same spot the one behind them usually gets a free lunch. The bankers in my eyes are Race 1 and Race 8, where I've got a clear pick and the shape backs it. Race 5 and Race 6 are where the chaos lives, and nobody wants to be the drongo who backs the odds-on favourite there and gets bumped on the first bend.

What it means for you: Be aggressive in Race 3 and Race 8, where the pace and the price are telling a story. Protect your bankroll in Race 2 and Race 5 where the price is short or the pace is split. The value sits in the back half of the fields when the leaders start scrapping, so keep an eye on Pietro Road, Hazardous and Roy Kelton as the races unfold. Stick to the locked bets and don't go chasing the roughies with money you actually need.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Crown The King (Race 3, No.2) — $3.00
Why Leads the Race 3 market on the way to the front from barrier 4, and the tongue tie goes back on, so he's no mug. The shape is against him with Scorched Lane up front, but he's been running on well at the business end and he's a fair pick to hit the frame if the speed holds up.

2 - To Dubai We Go (Race 2, No.14) — $2.45
Why Backed in from $3.10 down to $2.45, so the money's coming, and the shape is in his favour with Inspiritu the only genuine leader. He's come from the back of the field before and the jockey and trainer combination has form together.

3 - Mr Fabulous (Race 1, No.2) — $2.75
Why Blinkers go back on (again), he sits back from barrier 5 in a race where the shape suits the ones coming from behind, and he's been running home at Rosehill. The market's already sold him as a short price so he's not a bargain, but he's the one I trust most.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 20.21 = $202.10

Race 1 – Andersens Flooring Mountaineer Cup

Race type: Benchmark 74, 2500m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on paper, and nobody is a natural leader. Valentine John from barrier 7 is the likeliest to find the front, but he has to work from the outside to get there. That leaves the back half in the box seat, and my numbers say this shape suits the ones coming from behind. Mr Fabulous sits back from barrier 5 and gets the trip he wants, while Valentine John has to do the donkey work.
Punty read: Mr Fabulous is the bet here, and I'm happy to put the $12 on him. Blinkers go back on, he's 4kg up from last start, and the 10th at Rosehill 2400m last start is a bit ugly, but the 4th at Rosehill 2400m before that shows he's still got the engine. The slow pace suits him, and he gets a clear run from barrier 5 if the bolters don't go too hard early. Behtar is the one to watch from midfield, he has to find the gap but his sectionals are sharp. Valentine John is a danger if he gets the front on the cheap, and Party It Down is the long shot who needs the pace to fall apart.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)

1. Mr Fabulous (No.2) — $2.80 / $1.57
Bet $12.00 Win, return $33.60
Prob 27.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why Back from barrier 5 in a slow-run race, blinkers on and the shape falls his way. The best bet on the card for this race, and I'm not apologising for the short price.
2. Behtar (No.1) — $4.80 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.87x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Valentine John (No.3) — $6.50 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.01x Steady since tip
Why On the speed from barrier 7 and the likeliest to find the front, so he's the one who has to make the early running. He was 10th at Grafton 2350m last start, not tested, and he's a 2kg rise, which is the sort of thing that gets a horse caught out.

Roughie: Party It Down (No.7) — $15.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.6% | Place: 16.7% | Value: 0.68x Steady since tip
Why If the slow pace shapes up and the back half gets a clear run, Party It Down can swoop from barrier 1. The catch is 0 wins from 3 at 57-59kg, so he has to outrun the weight.

Race 2 – Junee Prime Lamb Country Boosted Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace here, with Inspiritu the only horse that can get to the front uncontested from barrier 3. De Razilly from barrier 13 is the nearest to pressure him, but he has to work wide to do it. Denbury, Distant Stripes and Fighting Fox all come from wide draws and need cover or luck to run through. The shape suits the horses held up, and Inspiritu is the one the shape hurts most. To Dubai We Go from barrier 9 sits back and gets the trip I want.
Punty read: To Dubai We Go gets the $13 on the win, and the shape is working in his favour. He's been 7th at Rosehill 1200m last start and 9th at Randwick 1600m before that, so he's not the most exciting form, but Glenn Cahill and the N J Osborne barn are both doing their jobs. Inspiritu is the danger because he'll make the running, and if nobody chases him he'll be hard to run down. Divine Spark is the one to watch from midfield with blinkers off first time and winkers back on.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. To Dubai We Go (No.14) — $2.50 / $1.35
Bet $13.00 Win, return $32.50
Prob 29.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why The shape helps the back half, and he's come in from $3.10 to $2.45 so the market has been backing him. He's a maiden with a long way to go, but the race is set up for a horse sitting off the speed.
2. Inspiritu (No.9) — $4.20 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.1% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.05x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.72 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Divine Spark (No.6) — $4.40 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers come off for the first time and winkers go on, and he's 0 wins from 7 at this track but has run four seconds and a third there. He's the one who finishes off the race if the leaders tire.

Roughie: Denbury (No.1) — $9.50 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 14 is a tough draw, but he was 3rd at Wagga 1300m last start and 6th at Wagga 1200m before that with an interference excuse. If the pace is genuine and the front pair burn out, he has the closing run.

Race 3 – Southern Cross Austereo Plate (C1)

Race type: Class 1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Scorched Lane the only genuine leader from barrier 7. Crown The King from barrier 4 is the closest to pressure, and Prized Gesture from barrier 2 may have a crack at the front too. The back half is loaded with wide draws, so Masakari, Dei Miracoli and Fulmina's Legacy all have to find cover. Icon Dream is the horse the shape helps most, and the leader is the one it hurts. Crown The King has to sit handy and find the trip, which makes the shape a real question.
Punty read: Crown The King takes the $13 on the win, and I'll be straight about it, the shape is against him. He sits handy from barrier 4 and will have to be slick to stay in touch with Scorched Lane. What wins it anyway is the form, he's been 8th at Warwick Farm 1400m, 10th at Rosehill 1200m with a bump, and he's got a tongue tie going on again. Jockey Jean Van Overmeire and the Luke Pepper barn are in form, so I'll trust them. Masakari is the danger from midfield, and Bottas is the one to watch from the back.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Crown The King (No.2) — $3.00 / $1.45
Bet $13.00 Win, return $39.00
Prob 32.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.97x Steady since tip
Why The best price on the card for a horse with real class, and the trainer's line is strong. He's shown he can win off a bit of luck, so the shape against him is the risk I'm willing to take.
2. Masakari (No.3) — $7.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.99x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Bottas (No.1) — $4.20 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.58x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker from barrier 5, and the fastest last 600 metres on the sectionals. If the pace is as hot as the map says, he's the one who can swoop from the back.

Roughie: Moral Turpitude (No.4) — $13.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.1% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why He's got 2 wins and 2 seconds from 17 starts and sits midfield from barrier 1. If the leader fades early, he can slide through the inside and pick up a place.

Race 4 – WDF Accounting & Advisory Mdn Hcp

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, and Surreal Retirement is the only leader from barrier 16. The Major, Ultrasonic and Yes Matty Yes are wide draws that have to work to get across, so the leader is going to be the one who can set the pace. The shape helps the back half, with Peltre and Bleue Dragon helped most. Surreal Retirement has the front if she wants it and the wide draw is the cost.
Punty read: Surreal Retirement is the each-way bet here, $15 to be exact, $7.50 win and $7.50 place. She's on the lead from barrier 16 and the shape suits her, and she was 2nd at Albury 1400m last start by 0.2L. She has to get the speed on early, and the wide draw is the real risk, but she's the one most likely to run on at the business end. Magnus Maximus is the danger, he's midfield from barrier 8 and in good form, and Richy Ric is the one to watch from the back.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Surreal Retirement (No.4) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), collects $52.50 if it wins ($37.50 win + $15.00 place), $15.00 if it only places
Prob 21.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.08x Steady since tip
Why Leads from barrier 16 and the shape suits the front-runner, so it's a fair bet at the price. The each-way covers the risk of her getting run down late.
2. Magnus Maximus (No.3) — $3.60 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.0% | Place: 53.9% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Richy Ric (No.10) — $4.20 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.59x Steady since tip
Why Only one start on the form, a 4th at Tatura 850m, and he's from the same stable as Magnus Maximus. He's the one who can pick up a placing from barrier 2 if the speed holds up.

Roughie: Ashden (No.7) — $13.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.6% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why Last start was 5th at Wagga Riverside 1000m, and the jockey and trainer combination has linked up for 7 winners from 24 rides. He's a long shot from barrier 6, but he's got the trip to run on if the front pair go hard.

Race 5 – Riverina Crane Services Hcp (C1) Heat Of The Rising Star

Race type: Class 1, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with two horses fighting for the lead. Angling For Info from barrier 1 and Hay Deer from barrier 6 are the two who want it, and Angling For Info is the one the shape hurts most. Hazardous from barrier 10 sits midfield and the shape is against him too, but he's got the sectional speed to get through the traffic. Rebel Terra from barrier 5 is the one who sits back and needs the speed to fall apart.
Punty read: Hazardous takes the $10.50 on the win, and the shape is against him. He's midfield from barrier 10 with the expected pace not helping him, but he's already won at Wodonga 1100m and Wangaratta 900m, and he's fastest over the last 600 metres. That form tells me he can win it anyway. Rebel Terra is the danger, the market has been backing him heavily from $11 to $6.50 and he's a 1st at Nowra 1100m last start. Hay Deer is the one who has to lead if Angling For Info backs off.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Hazardous (No.6) — $3.20 / $1.55
Bet $10.50 Win, return $33.60
Prob 24.3% | Place: 61.0% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Two wins from two starts, both at the short trips, and he's the fastest horse in the race over the last 600 metres on the sectionals. He's the bet, even with the pace against him.
2. Rebel Terra (No.5) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.2% | Place: 39.1% | Value: 1.12x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Hay Deer (No.7) — $3.70 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.63x Steady since tip
Why Won at Goulburn 1200m last start and is one of the two leaders, so he's the one to watch if he gets clear. If Angling For Info gets the front, Hay Deer is the one who has to chase.

Roughie: Graynita (No.9) — $11.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why Back from a 132-day spell, so there's a first-up question, but she's 2kg down from last start and sits handy from barrier 4. If the leaders fight it out, she can run on at the finish.

Race 6 – Elders Country Boosted Bragger Cup (Bm50)

Race type: Benchmark 50, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Freddy's Shock from barrier 8 and Passing Through from barrier 1 both wanting the front. Passing Through is the one the shape hurts most, and Roy Kelton from barrier 4 is the one the shape helps. The back half gets the trip, and the wide draws of Boy From Tennessee, Perfectly Good and Yes I Win have to find cover. Roy Kelton is the one who sits back and gets the run through.
Punty read: Roy Kelton is the bet at $13 on the win. He's on the back of the speed from barrier 4, the shape helps him, and he won at Canberra 1300m last start. The Nick Heywood combination has a good strike rate with this barn. Dunwithya is the danger from midfield, he's won at Orange 1400m recently and has a great jockey in the saddle. Perfectly Good is the one to watch from midfield on the back of two bumps.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Roy Kelton (No.2) — $3.30 / $1.57
Bet $13.00 Win, return $42.90
Prob 21.2% | Place: 54.2% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why Sits back from barrier 4 with the shape in his favour and a 1st at Canberra 1300m last start. He's going up in weight, but the race is set for a horse like him.
2. Dunwithya (No.3) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.0% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.66x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Perfectly Good (No.4) — $8.50 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.6% | Place: 35.6% | Value: 0.99x Steady since tip
Why 3rd at Wagga 2000m last start and he's been bumped in two of his last three starts. Midfield from barrier 11 is a tough draw, but he's the one who runs on if the pace holds.

Roughie: Cinephile (No.12) — $12.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.7% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why He was 2nd at Wagga Riverside 1675m last start and has a track win and a placing. Midfield from barrier 9, he's the one who gets the stable run if the leaders go too hard.

Race 7 – Coorparoo Park Stan Sadleir Stakes

Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Sister Shay from barrier 8 and Quamby from barrier 9 fighting for the front. Quamby has to work wide to cross, so Sister Shay gets the first call from the front and the shape helps her. Mathrin from barrier 1 is the one who sits back, and the expected pace is set up to help him. Cando Attitude from barrier 11 is midfield and has to find the gap.
Punty read: Sister Shay is the bet at $13 on the win. She's a leader from barrier 8 and the shape helps the front-runner, and she was 3rd at Tatura 850m last start. Cando Attitude is the danger from midfield, he's been running well at the trips and has a good jockey in Pierre Boudvillain. Urafiki is the one to watch from midfield, and Daze Off is the roughie who needs the field to chase hard.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Sister Shay (No.4) — $2.60 / $1.37
Bet $13.00 Win, return $33.80
Prob 24.4% | Place: 54.5% | Value: 0.63x Steady since tip
Why Leads from barrier 8 with the shape working for her. She's won at this trip, and the weight warning is about 54-56kg, so she's got to carry the weight well.
2. Cando Attitude (No.6) — $5.00 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.4% | Place: 60.1% | Value: 1.07x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Urafiki (No.2) — $5.50 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 5 and 1st at Canberra 900m last start. He's 3-kg lighter in the weights, and the market has backed him from $8.50 to $5.00.

Roughie: Daze Off (No.11) — $17.00 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.4% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 2, 4th at Wagga 1300m last start with an interference excuse. He's 0 wins from 7 at the weights, so he has to outrun the weight, but a fast run from the back of the field is the path.

Race 8 – Raising Hope With Steph (Bm66)

Race type: Benchmark 66, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with This Is The Moment from barrier 2 and Rosie's Prophecy from barrier 8 both wanting the lead. Zoutempus from barrier 3 is on the speed but the shape hurts him, and Pietro Road from barrier 1 sits back and gets the trip he needs. The shape suits the back half, and Pietro Road is the horse it helps most.
Punty read: Pietro Road takes the $10.50 on the win. He's the back-marker from barrier 1 and the shape is heavily in his favour, with two wins and three seconds from eight starts at the distance. He was 2nd at Wagga 1000m last start by 0.1L. Majestic Reward from barrier 10 is the danger, he's been running well at Albury and the price is short, but he's the one who has to get a clear run. Howie Do It is the one to watch from the on the speed group.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Pietro Road (No.3) — $3.00 / $1.45
Bet $10.50 Win, return $31.50
Prob 26.8% | Place: 59.2% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker with the shape working in his favour and two wins from eight at the distance. He's the bet, and the front pair in this race can't run the same pace for 1000 metres.
2. Majestic Reward (No.10) — $3.90 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.7% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Howie Do It (No.9) — $5.50 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.0% | Place: 53.7% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why 2nd at Hawkesbury 1000m last start and a win first-up. He's got the sectional speed to sit on the speed and be right there at the finish.

Roughie: Rosie's Prophecy (No.4) — $10.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.5% | Place: 28.0% | Value: 0.65x Steady since tip
Why She leads from barrier 8 and the market has backed her in from $18 to $10. If This Is The Moment gets gated out of the lead and the pace drops, she can steal the race from the front.

SEQUENCE LANES

EARLY QUADDIE (R1–R4)

Smart: 2,1,3 / 14,9,6,1,4 / 2,1,3,4 / 3,10,4,7 (240 combos x $0.30 = $72.00) -- 30% flexi
Punty's take: Race 1 and Race 2 are the tight legs with Mr Fabulous and To Dubai We Go leading the way, while Race 3 and Race 4 are wide open with four runners each. The floor on this ticket is 30% flexi, and at 34.7% it sits above that. Entertainment for the price, with a decent shot if the favourites hold.

QUADDIE (R5–R8)

Smart: 6,7,5,9 / 2,3,4,12 / 6,4,2,5 / 3,10,9,4 (256 combos x $0.30 = $76.80) -- 30% flexi
Punty's take: Race 5 and Race 8 are tight enough with Hazardous and Pietro Road, while Race 6 and Race 7 are open with four runners in one leg and three in another. The floor is 30% flexi and this ticket sits at 32.4%. Risky, but a $5 to $10 winner in the mix pays well.

BIG 6 (R3–R8)

Smart: 2,1,3,4 / 3,10,4,7 / 6,7,5,9 / 2,3,4,12 / 6,4,2,5 / 3,10,9,4 (4096 combos x $0.00122 = $5.00) -- 0.12% flexi
Punty's take: Six legs and 3840 combos for a $5 outlay makes this an entertainment-only ticket, and the flexi floor is 0.10% for the Big 6. It's a lottery ticket with a huge payout if it lands, but I'd only buy it for the fun of watching it at the TAB.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Blinkers back on for Mr Fabulous
Blinkers go back on (again) for Mr Fabulous, who has run 4 wins from 7 starts? No, check the record: 3 wins from 31 career starts, 4 starts first-up with 1 second, and 4 second-up starts with 1 win and 1 third. Watch the market.

2 - Divine Spark, blinkers off, winkers on
Blinkers come off for the first time and winkers go on (again), and he's 0 wins from 7 at this track with 4 seconds and a third. He's the one to watch in the Race 2 finish.

3 - Magnus Maximus, Gladiator in the making
Magnus Maximus has the name, the midfield draw and a market price that's shorter than a Roman emperor's temper. Whether he's the one to rule the Race 4 maiden is a question the track has to answer.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Wagga's got the speed sorted in some races and a mess in others, so pick your spots and don't chase the chaos with the rent money. Good luck, you grubby lot, and I'll see you back here for the next one.
