Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Ballarat, head to https://punty.ai/tips/ballarat-2026-11-02
Rightio Ticket Munchers, Ballarat is sitting on a Soft 6 with showers around and the rail out 5m, so this one is all about who gets the trip in the wet. Eight races, 103 runners, and the speed is mostly slow on paper, which means the sitters are going to be dangerous. Grab a coffee, a pen and a bit of patience, because the first four races are where the money gets made or lost.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Ballarat, 1000m to 1600m card
Rail: Out 5m Entire Circuit
Official going: Soft 6
Weather: Showers, live gusts 14.8km/h
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Races 1, 2, 4 and 5 are Slow Pace, Race 3 is Moderate, Race 8 is Genuine, and Races 6 and 7 are Hot Pace with three genuine leaders each.
Jockeys to follow:
Declan Bates: Five rides today, including Perfect Dismount in Race 3 and Miss Capri in Race 1.
Billy Egan: Five rides, with Chandler in Race 2 the one to watch for the Ticket Munchers.
Jake Noonan: Four rides, including Diamond Eye in Race 5 and Belcony in Race 8.
Stables to respect:
C Maher (9 runners): The biggest operation on the card, with Locard, Perfect Dismount, Front Page Edition and Azzacool all wearing their colours.
T & C McEvoy (7 runners): Franked Up, Best Terms, Catwalk Icon and M'lady Rose give them a serious spread across the card.
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (6 runners): Bella Athena, He's A Dandy, Savannah Chill, Sugar Schnapps and Layla. Solid depth for a stable that rarely leaves a race empty.
Punty's take: Ballarat has the look of a card where the sitters take charge in the first four races. Race 1 has the speed sitting back as the back half is favoured on the map, and Star Je Taime is the one who should be most comfortable in a slow, wet maiden. Race 2 is the banker race if you believe the speed map, with Chandler the only horse in the field who looks like he can dictate from the front or sit a length off. Race 3 is the one that has the most options, with Bella Blaze coming from the back on a moderate tempo that suits her. Then the back half of the card turns chaotic. Races 6 and 7 both have three genuine leaders each, which means somebody gets cooked up front and the closers get their chance. Race 8 is an open bunch with a pace that doesn't favour the front, so the sitters have to get through traffic. I like the day to be decided by who can handle the trip in the rain more than who has the fastest closing sectionals.
What it means for you: Be aggressive early in Race 2, that's the race I'd trust the most on the card. Keep the stakes disciplined through Races 3 and 4, where the price tags tell you the market is still open. The back half, Races 5 to 8, is where the chaos sits, so keep the exotics small and let the Each Way and win bets carry the day. The best value on the card sits in the midfield runners who can pick up a sprint finish, and the wider runners who can grind through the back half. Don't chase the short-priced favourites in the chaos races, they can get rolled in the wet.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Chandler (Race 2, No.1) — $1.40
Why Sits handy on a slow pace, has a strong 1st-up start with the Cranbourne 1000m second and two wins before that, and the market has been firming hard. This is the anchor of the day.
2 - Star Je Taime (Race 1, No.9) — $2.40
Why Settles back, has the shape helping it, and the jockey has a J-HOT 16.0% L100 with a 1st-up record of 2:0-0-0. It's the lightest pick at the top of the maiden and should find the trail.
3 - Best Terms (Race 4, No.1) — $2.45
Why Hardly a stranger to the placings, with a Soft 2:0-1-1 and a Track 2:0-1-1 record, plus a sectionals time rank fastest. The shape works against it, but it has the form to handle a wet track.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × 8.23 = $82.30
Race 1 – Manhari Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on paper, nobody maps to lead, but Noble Fox from barrier 8 is the likeliest to find the front. Star Je Taime from barrier 9 has to come around, while Shape The World and Trigger Warning sit in the middle and pick up the pieces. The shape suits the back half, which is why Star Je Taime is my pick.
Punty read: Star Je Taime is the bet here, and the reason is simple. He's the one who will be settled out the back on a slow tempo, with a map factor of 1.01 and a jockey who is running hot right now. Franked Up is the danger, he's worn blinkers, a bubble cheeker, a lugging bit and a tongue tie for the first time, and that sort of gear change is a fair flag for a horse that might be racing off the pace. Miss Capri is the one I'd want to watch, she's cheap on the place price and sits back, but her place price is short enough that I'd take the risk on the win. Whitebait is the roughie that shouldn't be ignored.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Star Je Taime (No.9) — $2.40 / $1.15
Bet $13.00 Win, return $31.20
Prob 37.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why Back on the slow pace and the shape helps him, with a J-HOT 16.0% L100 jockey and two wins from his 1st-up record. He's the one who gets the trail and is never far enough back to be caught wide.
2. Miss Capri (No.7) — $4.80 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.5% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.03x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.62 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Franked Up (No.1) — $3.10 / $1.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.57x Steady since tip
Why Gear changes are heavy, blinkers, bubble cheeker, lugging bit and tongue tie all first time, so he's a danger if he settles awkwardly.
Roughie: Whitebait (No.4) — $12.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.5% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.54x Steady since tip
Why If the speed collapses and the midfield runners get a fair run, Whitebait can sneak into the frame, with a Pace Advantaged rating of 1.18 and a sectionals L400 rank 3.
Race 2 – Ac Accounting Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, Chandler from barrier 4 and She Got Me Again from barrier 6 are the likeliest to fight for the front. Chandler is the one the speed will be built around, and the shape is against him on a slow tempo, but he has a sectionals time fastest and L400 fastest to back himself through. He'll sit handy and need to get the job done.
Punty read: Chandler is the bet, and it's a stand-out win bet at $1.40. He's the most proven horse in the field, with a Good 1:0-1-0 and Dist 1:0-1-0 record, and his last start was a second at Cranbourne. The main danger is He's A Dandy, a midfielder who gets the favoured shape but is coming off a bumped run at Mornington. Weeping Wonder is the one to watch at $3.70, he's a cross-over nose band first-time runner off a 249-day spell, so he may be short on match fitness.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Chandler (No.1) — $1.45 / $1.09
Bet $15.00 Win, return $21.75
Prob 60.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why Our banker in a field of seven, sitting handy and winning on the best closing sectionals. He's the horse to beat and he's already been placed on a soft track.
2. Weeping Wonder (No.4) — $3.70 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.61x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Swiss Impact (No.9) — $7.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.81x Steady since tip
Why Ear muffs and a Norton bit first time, with a J-COLD 7.0% L100 jockey, so he's a risk. He's the one who can grab a place if the leaders tire.
Roughie: She Got Me Again (No.7) — $21.00 / $4.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.3% | Place: 16.7% | Value: 0.69x Steady since tip
Why She was bumped at Geelong last start and sits handy on the map, so if Chandler gets hunted down she's the one who can nab the minor money.
Race 3 – Winning Edge Presentations - Emerging Stars Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with three leaders possible: Fire Type from barrier 6, Perfect Dismount from barrier 1 and Vellure from barrier 8. The wide draws in the back half are Meritorious from barrier 12 and Front Page Edition from barrier 11, so they need cover. Bella Blaze from barrier 7 sits back and gets the best of the shape.
Punty read: Bella Blaze is the bet, she's a back-runner who sits at the head of the shape with a map factor of 1.13 and a Good 3:0-1-1 record. Her last start was a second at Bendigo 1000m, and she has a sectionals L400 rank 3. Hells Gates is the horse I'd keep an eye on from the first-up angle, with four gear changes first time and a strong jockey strike rate at this track. Perfect Dismount is the one who can get on the speed and lead if the others don't want it.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Bella Blaze (No.12) — $4.20 / $1.80
Bet $15.00 Win, return $63.00
Prob 26.5% | Place: 55.6% | Value: 1.11x Steady since tip
Why She's the one who gets the shape, sits back in the moderate pace and has form on good tracks. Back her to run them down.
2. Hells Gates (No.5) — $4.60 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.9% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.59x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Perfect Dismount (No.7) — $7.50 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why The horse most likely to lead without pressure on the moderate pace, and a dist 2:0-1-0 record makes him a worthwhile runner.
Roughie: Sabrina (No.14) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.2% | Place: 31.6% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers go on first time and the jockey is running well at this track, so if the speed collapses and she gets the run of the race she can finish well.
Race 4 – Harvey Norman Ballarat Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, Best Terms from barrier 5 and Roll With It from barrier 10 are the likeliest to find the front. Best Terms sits handy, and the shape is against him, but a slow tempo with a midfield that gets the shape is a big test for Belle Flamme and Marco Polo, who both sit midfield. The back half, including Katiya and Mark's Magus, needs cover.
Punty read: Best Terms is the bet here. The shape is against him, but he's been placed on a soft track, his track record is 2:0-1-1 and his last start was a third at Horsham. He's a seasoned sitter who can grind through a slow race. Belle Flamme is the one to watch at $7.00, she's been going well over the distance and has been in the frame with a sectionals L600 fastest. Marco Polo is the danger in the midfield with a 1.18 map factor, but his last start was a fourth at Geelong.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Best Terms (No.1) — $2.50 / $1.25
Bet $13.00 Win, return $32.50
Prob 29.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why A good soft-track record with a third at Horsham last start and sectionals time fastest. He has the class to win this maiden even if he has to work for it.
2. Belle Flamme (No.8) — $7.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.10x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Marco Polo (No.3) — $5.50 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why Strong midfield runner with a 1.18 map factor and a J-HOT 16.0% jockey, the one to watch for a sprint finish.
Roughie: Tempered Edge (No.5) — $13.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.5% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Back of the field on the map and has been held up or bumped in recent starts, so a clean run in a slow race could see him finish well.
Race 5 – Hertz (Bm62)
Race type: Benchmark 62, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with Royal Emblem and Iron Legacy the likeliest to lead. Diamond Eye from barrier 5 sits back and the shape helps him, along with Celestial Splendor from barrier 6. Torn and Into You both come from the back half and need cover.
Punty read: Diamond Eye is the bet, he's a back-runner who gets the shape, with a Soft 2:0-1-0 record and a last-start Sale 8th run that came after a bumped trip. The Each Way is the play here, with the place price giving us a nice cushion. Celestial Splendor is the danger, a horse with a Good 5:2-0-0 record who gets the shape and has the sectionals time rank 3. Savannah Chill is the one with the best Dist record in the race, but she carries 5kg more than her last start.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Diamond Eye (No.5) — $5.00 / $1.82
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), collects $35.81 if it wins ($26.25 win + $9.56 place), $9.56 if it only places
Prob 19.3% | Place: 53.9% | Value: 0.97x Steady since tip
Why Back-runner on a slow pace with the shape in his favour, and his last start was a bumped trip at Sale. He's a good chance to finish in the frame.
2. Celestial Splendor (No.11) — $3.60 / $1.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.2% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.66x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Savannah Chill (No.1) — $4.80 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why Dist 3:2-1-0 and a Class 8:2-0-1 record show she's been winning at this trip, and she's hot right now with a jockey running at J-HOT 16.0%.
Roughie: Torn (No.7) — $9.50 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why Torn is a 38 start veteran with four wins and nine seconds, and the data shows 0 wins from 2 at 62kg, so keep him as a long-shot outsider.
Race 6 – Hygain Edge (Bm62)
Race type: Benchmark 62, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot pace with three genuine leaders in Wintery from barrier 5, Kooralbyn from barrier 10 and Brummagen from barrier 3. The contest is on up front, so the closers get a chance. Divine Vicky is the one who gets the shape from the midfield.
Punty read: Wintery is the bet, he leads and has an excellent record on soft tracks. The shape is against him with the hot pace, and the market has been drifting in the wrong direction, but I'm not overthinking it: his last start was a 1st at Colac 800m. Gunz from barrier 4 is the horse to watch if the leaders collapse, and Skjaldmo is the one who can take advantage of the hot pace from barrier 7. Mystic Reign is also a danger with the trip and form on a good day.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Wintery (No.4) — $3.00 / $1.45
Bet $15.00 Win, return $45.00
Prob 28.6% | Place: 53.6% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Leads from barrier 5 and won last start at Colac over 800m, the one to beat. The hot pace is a test but he's the most likely leader.
2. Gunz (No.2) — $4.80 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.0% | Place: 45.8% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.82 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Skjaldmo (No.9) — $4.80 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why Won last start at Ballarat 1000m, the best recent run in the field, and a Track 3:1-0-0 record shows he handles the surface.
Roughie: Kooralbyn (No.5) — $15.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why Won at Bairnsdale 1000m last start and leads from barrier 10. If the hot pace is too much for Wintery, Kooralbyn could be the one who tees up a surprise.
Race 7 – Sportsbet Race Replays (Bm62)
Race type: Benchmark 62, 1200m
Map & tempo: Hot pace with three genuine leaders in Thinking Sensation from barrier 14, Sugar Schnapps from barrier 4 and Layla from barrier 12. Catwalk Icon from barrier 2 sits handy, and the shape is against him, but Il Cielo and Dirty Diana sit midfield and get the shape.
Punty read: Catwalk Icon is the Each Way bet, he's a handy sitter who has been placed on a soft track and has a combo with his jockey at 50% (6/12). The shape is against him on a hot pace, so the Each Way is the play. Azzacool is the value with a map factor of 0.92 and a place value of 1.45x. Dirty Diana is the outsider in the midfield with the shape helping.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)
1. Catwalk Icon (No.3) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet $9.00 Each Way ($4.50W + $4.50P), collects $31.50 if it wins ($22.50 win + $9.00 place), $9.00 if it only places
Prob 18.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.91x Steady since tip
Why Handy from barrier 2 with a strong Track 2:1-1-0 record and a Dist 4:2-1-0 record. He's the best Each Way bet on the card.
2. Azzacool (No.8) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.03x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Sugar Schnapps (No.7) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why A leader who has to be respected with a J-HOT 16.0% jockey, the one to watch if the pace is too hot.
Roughie: Dirty Diana (No.9) — $10.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.5% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why Ballarat 1100m winner last start, a midfielder who gets the shape at 1.13, and his jockey and trainer have been winning together at a strike rate that gives him a path to the place.
Race 8 – Hygain Edge (Bm62)
Race type: Benchmark 62, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with M'lady Rose the only leader uncontested from barrier 13, but nearest pressure comes from Lygon Street Luigi, Russian Duchess, Belcony and Swycho. The midfield runners that get the shape are Bit Of Shoosh, Vim Vitae and Cool Savanna. Belcony sits handy from barrier 1, and the shape is against him, but he has the form to handle it.
Punty read: Belcony is the bet, he sits handy with a 3:0-1-1 record over the last three starts and a Sale 3rd. The shape is against him with a map factor of 0.85, but I'm backing his ability to handle the trip. The danger is Vim Vitae, a midfielder with the shape helping him, and Russian Duchess, who sits on the speed and has been unlucky in recent runs. Till Queen is the roughie with a Dist 4:1-2-0 record.
Top 3 + Roughie ($6.50 pool)
1. Belcony (No.10) — $4.20 / $1.80
Bet $6.50 Win, return $27.30
Prob 14.6% | Place: 43.5% | Value: 0.61x Steady since tip
Why Sits handy with blinkers on first time, and his last two starts were placings at Sale and Geelong. He's the one with the most consistent form.
2. Vim Vitae (No.9) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 28.0% | Value: 0.69x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Russian Duchess (No.8) — $8.50 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why Sits on the speed and has the Dist 4:2-0-1 record that suits the trip, but she's been held up in recent starts.
Roughie: Till Queen (No.2) — $10.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.04x Steady since tip
Why Two wins from her last three starts at Bendigo and Echuca over 1600m, and a Dist 4:1-2-0 record makes her a strong place chance if the leaders fold.
SEQUENCE LANES
EARLY QUADDIE (R1–R4)
Smart: 9,1 / 1,4 / 12,5,7,14 / 1,3,8 (48 combos x $0.4167 = $20.00) -- 41.7% flexi
Punty's take: Race 2 is tight with Chandler carrying the leg, while Race 1 and Race 4 are tight enough with the favourites. Race 3 is the open leg. Solid, low-outlay play, but the short-priced winners won't pay much.
QUADDIE (R5–R8)
Smart: 5,11,1 / 4,9,2 / 8,3 / 10,8,2,9 (72 combos x $0.4444 = $32.00) -- 44.4% flexi
Punty's take: Race 5 and Race 8 are open bunches, Race 6 is tight enough with Wintery, and Race 7 is the two-horse leg. Risky, with four open races in the ticket, but a $5 to $10 winner somewhere can pay well.
BIG 6 (R3–R8)
Smart: 12,5,7,14 / 1,3,8,5 / 5,11,1,7 / 4,9,2,5 / 8,3,7,9 / 10,8,2,9 (4096 combos x $0.00122 = $5.00) -- 0.12% flexi
Punty's take: Six legs, five of them open races, and only 0.13% flexi. This is an entertainment-only ticket, so bet it for the fun and not for the bank.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Franked Up is a gear overhaul
Blinkers, a bubble cheeker, a lugging bit and a tongue tie are all going on first time for No.1 in Race 1. Watch the market and his early speed.
2 - Sabrina's blinkers and a hot jockey
Blinkers go on first time for No.14 in Race 3, and her jockey has a J@trk 16.3% (1041/6367) strike rate at this track.
3 - Torn has been down this road before
The data shows Torn has 0 wins from 2 at 62-62kg, so the 38 starts and four wins are a reminder that weight matters on a soft track.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Ballarat is a card for the patient and the mean. Back the sitters early, keep your stakes tight in the chaos, and if the back half of the card turns into a demolition derby, you can thank the leaders for the carnage. Good luck, Ticket Munchers.
