Rightio Ratbags, seven races, 1000m to 1600m, Good 4 and fine, so this is a proper country card with no excuses for a bad track. The speed is spread around, the market has got a few things wrong, and there's a Quaddie hiding in the back half that actually makes sense. Grab a coffee, get your tickets sorted, and let's go.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Corowa, 1000m to 1600m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good 4 (1mm last 24hrs, 4mm last 7 days)
Weather: Fine, live gusts 22.2km/h
Early lane guess: Unknown pre-race, watch the first two.
Tempo profile: Races 3 and 4 are Hot Pace sprints where the leaders will go hard. Races 2 and 5 are Slow Pace, so the closers have to wait for the run home. Races 1, 6 and 7 are the galloping races, with Race 1 Moderate and the other two Genuine.
Jockeys to follow:
Blaike Mc Dougall: 6 rides today, including Shapenapit in Race 7, my Big 3 horse in the day's only Class 1.
Brendan Ward: 6 rides today, spread across six different races, so he's involved everywhere.
Cory Parish: 5 rides today, including Cowboykickedfive, the top pick in Race 1.
Stables to respect:
P McVicar (5 runners): Shapenapit in Race 7 is the Big 3 horse here, and Gobbo's Mate in Race 5 gives them a second run at the money.
D J McCarthy (4 runners): Strummer in Race 6 is the one to respect, the pick with a live shape behind it.
Darrell Burnet (4 runners): Denbury in Race 2 is the one with a real case, from a midfield spot with a clean run from barrier 8 at the right time.

Punty's take:

Right, let's talk about where the speed actually is, because that's the story of this card. Race 3 and Race 4 are both Hot Pace sprints, and in Race 3 you've got four leaders scrapping it out, Night Meeting, Summoned Lou, Captivating Storm and No Ordinary Show, which is a proper bunfight. That's bad news for the front-runners and good news for anyone sitting midfield who can settle and wait. Our Lady Peace is the one I want in that race, even though the shape is working against her, because her sectionals are the best on the card and she's the short-priced favourite for a reason.

Race 4 is the same story with more ruckus. Divazou, Pretty Panther and Trust In Chad all want the lead, but Jugiong is the one sitting in behind waiting to pounce. Jugiong is the pick because the market has been backing him in and he's the standout form horse on the board. It's the sort of race where I'd rather the speed kill itself than the closers cook.

Race 1 looks like a dancing pony waiting for a bloke to shout at it. It's Moderate pace, and nobody maps to lead outright, so Cowboykickedfive gets to sit handy and cruise. Race 2 and Race 5 are the Slow Pace races, which is the kind of thing that turns the handicap into a waiting game. Race 7 is Genuine pace with Forrest Gump the only leader, so Shapenapit sitting midfield with a shape that helps him is exactly the setup I like. This is a card for punters who can read a pace map, not for mugs chasing the biggest number on the board.

What it means for you:

Be aggressive in Race 7 and Race 4, where the pace maps and the market agree and the Big 3 lives. Protect yourself in Race 2 and Race 5, which are slow-pace rides where the market can be cruel. Race 2 has Kinduku at $2.90 with fresh gear on, and Race 5 has Doubtfree at $4.00 with the sectionals to back up the form, but the shape is against him. Race 1 and Race 6 are the spots where the place bets earn their keep, with Cowboykickedfive and Belnera both carrying each-way cover.

The Quaddie runs Race 4 to Race 7 and it's built around Jugiong and Shapenapit as the anchors, with the wide legs in Race 5 and Race 6 doing the heavy lifting if the chaos shows up. The value is in the Quaddie because the market's short on Jugiong and Shapenapit but the back half is open enough to pay if one of the roughies lands. Keep your stakes sensible, because Races 5 and 6 are where the ticket can go wrong quickly.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Jugiong (Race 4, No.2) — $3.40
Why Jugiong is the standout form horse on the card, and the market has been right behind him, shortening from $4.40 to $3.40. The Hot Pace is against him, but the closers need the speed to collapse and I'm backing that to happen.
2 - Shapenapit (Race 7, No.3) — $3.10
Why Shapenapit has the sectionals, the form and a shape that helps him in a Genuine Pace race where Forrest Gump is the only leader. Blaike Mc Dougall rides, the market is firming, and I'm not finding a reason to be against him.
3 - Our Lady Peace (Race 3, No.10) — $2.60
Why Our Lady Peace is the short-priced favourite and the sectionals back her up, with fastest time and L400 rank 2. The shape is against her in a Hot Pace race, so she's a short price with a real risk, but the class and the best sectionals on the card keep her in the Big 3.

Multi (all three to win): $10 × 27.40 = $274.00

Race 1 – De Bortoli Wines, Rutherglen Mdn Hcp

Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace on paper, but nobody maps to lead outright and the likeliest to find the front are Ashen Knight, Cowboykickedfive and Supreme Lass. Cowboykickedfive from barrier 3 is the one who can sit handy and settle, and the shape helps him. Ashen Knight is hurt by the expected pace and Supreme Lass is drawn wide at barrier 10. Hellfighter from barrier 11 has to work to get across, which is where the danger lies.
Punty read: Cowboykickedfive is the bet because he's handy from barrier 3, the shape helps him, and he's been finishing his races well without winning yet. The price is $4.40 and the place is strong, so the each-way makes sense. Hellfighter is the main danger from midfield, and Ashen Knight is the danger on the speed if he finds the front. Victrix Swan is the one who needs the leaders to fall over.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Cowboykickedfive (No.8) — $4.40 / $1.80
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $40.30 if it wins ($28.60 win + $11.70 place), $11.70 if it only places
Prob 25.3% | Place: 62.9% | Value: 1.11x Steady since tip
Why Handy from barrier 3 with the shape on his side, and his form is solid with third-place finishes in his last two starts at Pakenham and Bairnsdale. Winkers come off first time today, which I'm reading as a gear change to watch, and Cory Parish gets the ride.
2. Hellfighter (No.3) — $4.40 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.1% | Place: 54.5% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Ashen Knight (No.6) — $4.20 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.4% | Place: 53.6% | Value: 0.60x Steady since tip
Why Ashen Knight is on the speed from barrier 5 and runs his best when he can get a clear lead. He's been close in recent starts, but the weight history is against him with a 0 from 6 record at 58-60kg.

Roughie: Victrix Swan (No.12) — $15.00 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why He's midfield from barrier 6 and needs the leaders to tire in a race where the pace is only moderate. The market has drifted him from $12.00 to $15.00, and a late run is the only path to a placing.

Race 2 – Corowa Machinery Services Country Boosted Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, with Duke Of Zhou from barrier 7 and Coco Mojo from barrier 1 the likeliest to find the front. Nobody's shape is clearly suited to a slow pace here, so this comes down to the closers finding room. Denbury is drawn wide at barrier 8, which means he needs cover and luck to get through the field.
Punty read: Kinduku is the bet because the market has backed him from $4.00 to $2.90 and he's got the fresh gear on, lugging bit and tongue tie both on for the first time. Jockey Pierre Boudvillain has a strong strike rate at this track, so the market move has some logic behind it. Gold Decree and Denbury are the danger from midfield, and Jacko's Lamb is the wild card at a long price.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Kinduku (No.7) — $2.90 / $1.30
Bet $13.00 Win, return $37.70
Prob 24.6% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why Kinduku is the market's strongest move on the card, with lugging bit and tongue tie both on for the first time, and a jockey who has found plenty of winners at Corowa. He ran fifth at Hawkesbury last start, which is a good finishing effort.
2. Gold Decree (No.3) — $3.60 / $1.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.45 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Denbury (No.1) — $3.70 / $1.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.4% | Place: 54.2% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why Denbury has been held up by the traffic and the interference at Wagga, which is why the last-start excuse is so good. He's drawn wide at barrier 8, so he needs luck, but the form is there if he can get clear.

Roughie: Jacko's Lamb (No.5) — $11.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.97x Steady since tip
Why No jockey is listed yet and there's no form on the board, so this is a stab in the dark. If the slow pace throws a closer into a race it could land, but I'm not putting money on it.

Race 3 – Federation Tree Care Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot pace, with four leaders contesting the lead in Night Meeting, Summoned Lou, Captivating Storm and No Ordinary Show. That's a proper bunfight, and the forward runners are going to cook each other. Our Lady Peace from barrier 11 is the one sitting midfield, and she needs the leaders to come back to her. Inspiring from barrier 7 is on the speed and has a clean run at the placings.
Punty read: Our Lady Peace is the bet at a short price because the sectionals are the best on the card, with fastest time and L400 rank 2. The shape is against her, so I'm not pretending otherwise. What keeps her in the case is the three seconds at distance and the jockey, Coriah Keatings, who knows how to hold a horse in the back half. Inspiring and No Ordinary Show are the main danger from the speed, and Night Meeting is the one who could steal it if the others cook.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Our Lady Peace (No.10) — $2.60 / $1.40
Bet $15.00 Win, return $39.00
Prob 27.7% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Fastest time sectional and an L400 rank 2 are the reason she's the favourite, with the shape working against her in a Hot Pace race. Coriah Keatings rides and she's been placing at the distance, so the form backs up the market.
2. Inspiring (No.3) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.94x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. No Ordinary Show (No.11) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.81x Steady since tip
Why No Ordinary Show is a leader from barrier 13, which is the hardest draw on the card. He's in the race for the speed, but he's drawn so wide that he has to be the one to take the lead early.

Roughie: Mighty Ruler (No.8) — $16.00 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.7% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why Ear muffs come on for the first time today, and he ran a fourth at Albury last start. If the leaders cook, a closer like him can get home, but the market's drifted him from $12.00 to $16.00 so there's a reason he's not being backed.

Race 4 – Naughtin Developments (Bm66)

Race type: Benchmark 66, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot pace, with Divazou, Pretty Panther and Trust In Chad the three leaders in the fight for the front. Divazou from barrier 9 and Pretty Panther from barrier 7 are both drawn wide and have to work across to get the lead, which hands the speed to Trust In Chad from barrier 1. Jugiong sits midfield from barrier 6 and needs the speed to collapse, while Trooper from barrier 3 sits handy and can pounce if they do.
Punty read: Jugiong is the bet because he's the form horse on the card, with 3 wins from 14 starts and 2 seconds and 2 thirds. The market's been backing him from $4.40 to $3.40 and that's worth respecting. The shape is against him, so the path to winning is the leaders wearing each other out. Trooper is the danger from handy, and Marine Girl from barrier 2 is a closer who can get home if the pace collapses.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Jugiong (No.2) — $3.40 / $1.50
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), collects $25.73 if it wins ($17.85 win + $7.88 place), $7.88 if it only places
Prob 30.1% | Place: 57.9% | Value: 1.02x Steady since tip
Why He's got the best form on the card, with 3 wins from 14 starts and a 3kg rise in weight this week, but his form is good enough to carry it. Pierre Boudvillain rides and the market has backed him all the way from $4.40. He ran a fourth at Sandown-Lakeside last start, so he's fit enough to win this.
2. Trooper (No.4) — $2.70 / $1.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.9% | Place: 54.5% | Value: 0.51x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Marine Girl (No.9) — $6.50 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why Marine Girl is on the speed from barrier 2 and has been running on at the finish. She's won 3 from 16 starts and has a strong distance record with 2 wins from 7 at the trip.

Roughie: Before The War (No.1) — $10.00 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.6% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Before The War is a six-time winner from 27 starts and has a Good 4 record of 4 wins from 15. If the leaders collapse in a Hot Pace race, a classy horse midfield can run through them, and the market has drifted him from $6.50 to $9.00.

Race 5 – Federation Stell And Industrial Country Boosted (Bm58)

Race type: Benchmark 58, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, with Star Empire from barrier 7 and Gobbo's Mate from barrier 1 the likeliest to find the front. Doubtfree from barrier 9 is a midfield runner who needs the race to open up, and the shape is against him. Vinari from barrier 4 is midfield too, and the slow pace doesn't do him any favours either.
Punty read: Doubtfree is the bet because he's the sectionals king of the race, with fastest L600 and L400, and he won his last start at Wangaratta. The market has him at $4.00 and the place is strong. The shape is against him, so he needs to find a gear late, and the market has backed him all the way. Vinari is the danger from midfield, and Star Empire is the speed that could still hang on.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Doubtfree (No.7) — $4.00 / $1.70
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $37.05 if it wins ($26.00 win + $11.05 place), $11.05 if it only places
Prob 27.0% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.08x Steady since tip
Why Doubtfree won his last start at Wangaratta over 1300m and has the best sectionals on the card, with fastest L600 and L400. The shape is against him in a slow-pace race, but the form is strong enough that he's a worthwhile each-way bet.
2. Vinari (No.6) — $4.80 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.5% | Place: 61.0% | Value: 0.94x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Star Empire (No.1) — $7.50 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.0% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why Star Empire has won his last two starts at Cootamundra and Canberra Acton, and he's on the speed from barrier 7. Blaike Mc Dougall rides, and the market has eased him from his opening price. He's a leader in a slow pace race, which is exactly what he wants.

Roughie: Kirwans Bridge (No.5) — $13.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.6% | Place: 28.0% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why No jockey is listed, he's drawn wide at barrier 11 and his weight form is a warning at 56-57kg. The only path is the slow pace leaving room for a run late, and I'm not putting money on it.

Race 6 – Balldale Hotel (Bm58)

Race type: Benchmark 58, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, with Ferrari Man as the only leader from barrier 3, so he gets an uncontested lead. Strummer from barrier 9 is on the speed and is drawn wide, so he has to work to cross. Belnera from barrier 5 is midfield and needs the speed to come back to him, while Wambeen from barrier 1 sits handy and has a clean run in behind the leader.
Punty read: Belnera is the bet at $4.80 because the sectionals are the best in the race with fastest L600 and L400, and he's placed in his last two starts at Wagga. The shape is against him, so the speed has to fall over, but the form and the market firming from $5.50 to $4.80 give me confidence. Strummer and Wambeen are the dangers from the speed, and Ferrari Man is the wildcard if he can hold on in front.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Belnera (No.8) — $4.80 / $1.75
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $42.58 if it wins ($31.20 win + $11.38 place), $11.38 if it only places
Prob 20.6% | Place: 54.2% | Value: 0.99x Steady since tip
Why Belnera has the best sectionals in the race with fastest L600 and L400, and he's placed in his last two starts. The market has been backing him in from $5.50 to $4.80, and his 1600m record has been solid.
2. Strummer (No.3) — $5.50 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Wambeen (No.7) — $3.50 / $1.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.51x Steady since tip
Why Wambeen won his last start at Wodonga over 1590m and has a strong distance record with 2 wins from 7 at the trip. Cory Parish rides and he's on the speed from barrier 1.

Roughie: Ferrari Man (No.4) — $9.00 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why He's the only leader in a Genuine Pace race from barrier 3, so the uncontested lead is his path. He won at Orange last start and has 7 wins from 33 at the distance, but the market has drifted him from $7.00 to $9.00.

Race 7 – Waldron's Corowa IGA Hcp (C1)

Race type: Class 1, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, with Forrest Gump the only leader from barrier 4. That's an uncontested lead, and the expected pace helps the back half. Shapenapit from barrier 2 sits midfield and has the shape helping him, while Palladium from barrier 10 is drawn wide and has to find cover. Forrest Dancer from barrier 1 is the closer who can pounce if Forrest Gump gets run down.
Punty read: Shapenapit is the bet because he's got the fastest L600 and L400 on the card, with 1 win and 4 placings from 8 starts. He has the best place price on the card at $3.10, and the market has backed him in from $3.50. The shape helps him, which is a rare thing in this race. Forrest Gump is the danger on the speed, and Palladium is the closer who can finish the job if he gets a clear run.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Shapenapit (No.3) — $3.10 / $1.52
Bet $13.00 Win, return $40.30
Prob 29.0% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why He's got the fastest L600 and L400 on the card, and a Good 4 record of 4 starts with 2 seconds. P McVicar trains him and Blaike Mc Dougall rides, and the shape helps him in a race where Forrest Gump is the only leader.
2. Forrest Gump (No.1) — $4.80 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.85 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Palladium (No.2) — $5.00 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.68x Steady since tip
Why Palladium has fastest time and L400 rank 2, with a 3rd at Wangaratta over 900m. He's drawn wide at barrier 10, so he needs cover, but the Ledger stable has been on the mark.

Roughie: Forrest Dancer (No.6) — $12.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 34.7% | Value: 1.09x Steady since tip
Why He's a backmarker in a Genuine Pace race where the expected pace helps the back half, and the market has backed him from $17.00 to $12.00. Jake Duffy rides and the sprint form is strong, so if Forrest Gump gets run down from the back he can finish fast.

SEQUENCE LANES

QUADDIE (R4–R7)

Smart: 2,4 / 7,6 / 8,7,3,4 / 3,1,2 (48 combos x $0.4167 = $20.00) -- 41.7% flexi
Punty's take: R4 is tight with Jugiong and Trooper, and R7 is tight with Shapenapit and Forrest Gump. R5 and R6 are wide open, which is where the ticket lives or dies. The ticket is built to the 30% flexi floor and runs at 41.7%, a sensible play for a $20 outlay, but the short-priced anchors will rarely pay the whole ticket on their own.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Titan's Soul goes blinkers on first time
Blinkers come on for the first time today and visors come off, and the market has drifted him from $11.00 to $18.00. That's a horse who's been racing without them and now has them on, which means the market has decided he's not the one.
2 - Kinduku's gear and market move line up
Lugging bit and tongue tie are both on for the first time, and the market has backed him from $4.00 to $2.90. Pierre Boudvillain has a 14.3% strike rate at this track, so the move has a reason behind it.
3 - Forrest Gump is the only leader in Race 7
With Forrest Gump the only horse on the speed in Race 7, the rest of the field knows exactly where the pace is coming from. If Forrest Gump gets run down, it'll be like watching Rocky chase a bus, and the bus always wins.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Seven races, one Quaddie, and a mountain of gear changes to chew on. Read the maps, back the picks, and don't go chasing the roughies at $20 plus, because the data says that's where the bloodbath lives.
