Punty's Early Mail
PUNTY EARLY MAIL, Ballina (2 November 2026)
For all of Punty's tips for Ballina, head to https://punty.ai/tips/ballina-2026-11-02
Rightio Degenerates, Ballina is on a Heavy 8 with six races, the rail is in play and there's a 40%+ chance of rain by 2pm, so the track could get worse as the day goes on. Grab a coffee, get the ticket book out and let's see who can handle the mud.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Ballina, 1000m to 2600m card
Rail: True (rail position not given in the data)
Official going: Heavy 8
Weather: Fine, live gusts 11.1km/h, 40%+ chance of rain at 14:00
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Moderate in Races 1, 2, 3 and 5, Genuine in Race 4, Slow in Race 6. Only Race 4 has a leader I can name with any certainty, so the rest of the card is a scramble for the front.
Jockeys to follow:
Danny Peisley: five rides, including California Grass in Race 2 and Pareto in Race 3, two of the horses I'm putting money on.
Andrew Mallyon: three rides, Brief Authority in Race 1, Swifties in Race 3 and Bellarata in Race 6, which is a lot of work for one bloke in the wet.
Siabh Rigley: three rides, and Amaya's Secret in Race 1 is the one I'm keenest to see him on.
Stables to respect:
Stephen & Jordan Lee (10 runners): the biggest operation on the card, with Amaya's Secret in Race 1 and Do It For You in Race 3 the ones that matter most to my numbers.
M J Dunn (8 runners): Field Of Clans in Race 4 is my top pick, and the stable also has Maurraqa and Bellarata in Race 6 plus Trinity State in Race 1.
Ethan Ensby (4 runners): Ayasaki in Race 2 is the one to respect, backed by a strong sectional record and the second-best value line in that race.
Punty's take: Ballina is a heavy track with a card of two halves. Races 1 to 3 are all about who gets to the front, and nobody on the map is a sure leader, so those races will be a bit of a bun fight through the first 200m. Race 4 is the clean one. Prestige Reign is the only horse on the map to lead, and he has the trip to himself unless Time Has Come chases him down from barrier 2. Race 5 is where the bankers live. Worthy Stunnah is the shortest price on the card at $2.10, and the money has been pouring in since he opened at $3.20. Race 6 is the chaos race with a slow tempo and an open bunch of midfielders, so that's where a roughie can earn its keep. The rain forecast matters here. A horse with heavy form like Vetoed is not a scraper if the track goes to 9 or 10.
What it means for you: Be aggressive on Field Of Clans in Race 4 and Worthy Stunnah in Race 5. Those two are the spine of the day, and Worthy Stunnah is the banker of the card at a price that won't pay you a fortune but will keep the ticket alive. Protect the bankroll in Race 1 and Race 2, where the shape works against my picks and I'm happy to let the market be wrong without wrecking the stake. Race 3 is a small field with only two places paying, so keep the staking simple there. For the quaddie, the legs in Races 4 and 5 are tight, Race 3 has three options, and Race 6 is the wide one. It won't pay like a bomb, but the flexi keeps the ticket breathing.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Worthy Stunnah (Race 5, No.6) — $2.10
Why The market has come to him from $3.20 and he's the best-supported horse on the card, with a second on the Gold Coast 1400m last start and a 1-to-2 finishing record at this trip. Winkers go on first time, which is worth watching, but the price and the money say he's the one to beat.
2 - Field Of Clans (Race 4, No.10) — $3.10
Why Opened at $5.00 and has been hammered to $3.10, and he won at Ballina over 1000m on the good side of the weather last start in the data. He sits midfield with the leader's shape working against him, but the form is strong enough that I'm not overthinking it.
3 - California Grass (Race 2, No.3) — $2.80
Why Best horse in the field on the win line and the three-year-old of the staying pack in a race with a moderate tempo. He's drawn barrier 1 and settles back, so he needs the front to fall apart a bit, but he's finished third at his last start on the Grafton 2200m and he's the price to beat.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × 18.23 = $182.30
Race 1 – Ballina Fair Country Boosted
Race type: Benchmark 58, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace on paper, but six runners have a claim to the front and nobody maps to lead outright. Amaya's Secret from barrier 1 is the horse most likely to be handy, and the shape works against him. Trinity State and Tryanza are drawn wide at barrier 8 and 7, so they have to work to cross, which hurts their chances of getting the perfect trip. Kirra's Sister from barrier 6 is well placed to fight for the sit, so this one could go either way early.
Punty read: Amaya's Secret is the bet. He's on the speed from barrier 1, has a 2-5-1 distance record from 11 starts, and his last start was a 2nd at Grafton 1000m. He's up 9kg from his last start and his record is best at lighter weights, so the weight question is real. Kirra's Sister is the danger with a strong 2nd-up record and ear muffs on for the first time, and Trinity State has the fastest closing sectionals in the race. Tryanza is a roughie on the wide draw, not a banker.
Top 3 + Roughie ($4.50 pool)
1. Amaya's Secret (No.1) — $3.40 / $1.35
Bet $4.50 Each Way ($2.25W + $2.25P), collects $10.69 if it wins ($7.65 win + $3.04 place), $3.04 if it only places
Prob 28.1% | Place: 61.6% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 1, handy, and the best record of the top three over this trip. His form lines are the best on the card at this level, with a second and two thirds at his last three starts, and he's the one I'd put the money on in a race where the early speed is uncertain.
2. Kirra's Sister (No.2) — $3.10 / $1.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.1% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Trinity State (No.5) — $4.00 / $1.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.6% | Place: 59.6% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why Fastest closing sectionals in the race and a win on good ground from two starts. The wide draw at barrier 8 is the problem, but if the pace is kind he can run home.
Roughie: Tryanza (No.7) — $10.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.93x Steady since tip
Why Path to winning is a moderate pace that burns the early speed and a wide run home that suits his closing style. His last start was a sixth at Ballina over 1000m and he's been unlucky with the draw, so he's a long shot, not a banker.
Race 2 – TAB Stayers Cup
Race type: Benchmark 58, 2600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with a shape that suits the forward runners. Nature Boy is the horse helped most by the expected pace, while Think I'm Irish and Termite are the ones the pace hurts from the back. Ayasaki from barrier 5 and Crunch Time from barrier 6 are the likeliest to find the front. California Grass is on the back from barrier 1, so he needs the race to come to him.
Punty read: California Grass is the bet. He's a stayer by profile, with 4 starts on heavy and a second place, and his last start was a third at Grafton 2200m. He settles back, which is against the shape, but he's ridden by Danny Peisley who has the sort of record at this trip that makes the early speed matter less. Ayasaki is the danger from the front, with two sectional rankings at the top of the race. Crunch Time is the one to watch from the wide-ish draw.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. California Grass (No.3) — $2.90 / $1.25
Bet $7.50 Win, return $21.75
Prob 31.0% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why He's a stayer with the most experience on the card at this trip and his last start was a close third at Grafton 2200m. The shape is against him from barrier 1, but he's got the class and the rider to make the late run work.
2. Ayasaki (No.2) — $3.50 / $1.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 28.1% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.98x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Crunch Time (No.4) — $7.50 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.1% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.91x Steady since tip
Why Won at Toowoomba over 2180m at his last start, and he's been on the pace at this trip with good sectionals. Worth a place look but not a stake.
Roughie: Think I'm Irish (No.7) — $10.00 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.90x Steady since tip
Why Path to winning is a genuinely slow finish up front and a back-marker sprint from the rear. He's got the time fastest sectional in the data, but he's on the back and the shape is against him, so only if the race collapses.
Race 3 – CNW Ballina
Race type: Benchmark 82, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Silent Call the horse helped most by the expected tempo. Do It For You from barrier 4, Pareto from barrier 7 and Dark Chill from barrier 5 are all likely to be in the top four early, and Pareto has to work to cross from the wide draw. Swifties from barrier 6 needs cover from the back, and Tonneofgrit is well back at barrier 3.
Punty read: Pareto is the bet. He's been good on heavy ground with two wins from five starts and has a 40% strike rate with Danny Peisley at this track. He's drawn barrier 7 and sits on the pace, which the shape works against, but his sectionals are in the top two of the field and the Benchmark 82 class is a level he can handle. Do It For You is the danger on the speed from barrier 4. Swifties is the one to watch from the back.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.50 pool)
1. Pareto (No.3) — $4.40 / $2.15
Bet $11.50 Win, return $50.60
Prob 25.1% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.10x Steady since tip
Why He's the horse with the best record in the field on heavy and his last two runs have been strong sectionals with a bad trip. The draw is wide, but he's the most likely winner on the card at this distance.
2. Swifties (No.4) — $4.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Do It For You (No.2) — $3.20 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.57x Steady since tip
Why Seven wins from 33 starts and a strong 2nd-up record. On the speed from barrier 4, and the shape suits a horse on the pace. Not staked, but a horse to watch closely.
Roughie: Dark Chill (No.7) — $18.00 / $4.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.5% | Place: 9.8% | Value: 0.63x Steady since tip
Why Path to winning is a fast closing run from the midfield if the leaders stop. His jockey has a strong strike rate at this track, but the record is patchy and he's a long shot.
Race 4 – Ballina Cup On January 15 Mdn Hcp
Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, and Prestige Reign is the only leader on the map, uncontested from barrier 3. Time Has Come from barrier 2 is the one horse to chase him down. Bar Star and Mariner Miss are on the back, and the shape hurts both. Naystar is drawn barrier 9 and has to work from wide. Field Of Clans sits midfield from barrier 7, and the shape works against him, but the winning form is hard to ignore.
Punty read: Field Of Clans is the bet. He's the horse with the best win and place numbers in the field, sits in the midfield where the pace is kind to a few horses but not him, and his last start was a second at Ipswich 1100m. He had a win at Ballina over 1000m on the way in, which is the cleanest form line in the race. Bar Star is the danger from the back if the leader fades. Prestige Sotirio is a horse with no map position so I'm not claiming a run for him.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Field Of Clans (No.10) — $3.10 / $1.50
Bet $15.00 Win, return $46.50
Prob 34.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.07x Steady since tip
Why He won at Ballina over 1000m and ran second at Ipswich 1100m last start. He's the most likely winner in a maiden where the early speed is with Prestige Reign, and the place market has him as a clear value horse.
2. Bar Star (No.1) — $4.50 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.72 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Prestige Sotirio (No.3) — $4.20 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.59x Steady since tip
Why Won first-up at Lismore over 1010m and has a cross-over nose band on for the first time. No map position in the data, so I'm treating him as an unknown runner with a bit of upside.
Roughie: Naystar (No.6) — $12.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.1% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why Path to winning is a leader who gets caught and a wide run home. He's been bumped and hampered in his last two starts, so the excuse is there if the race goes his way.
Race 5 – Boxing Day Races @ Ballina Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and no runner is clearly suited by the expected tempo. Worthy Stunnah from barrier 3 settles handy, and the shape works against him. The Minstrel Boy from barrier 11 and Zouman from barrier 9 are drawn wide and have to work to get across. To'o, Cool Thoughts and Tendue's Spirit are on the back and the shape hurts all three.
Punty read: Worthy Stunnah is the bet. He's the shortest price on the card, backed from $3.20 to $2.10, and he has a second at Gold Coast over 1400m last start. Winkers are on for the first time, which is a question mark, but the market and the form say he's the horse to beat. The Minstrel Boy and Testy Nic are the two dangers from the midfield, and To'o is the wild card at a fat price on the back.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Worthy Stunnah (No.6) — $2.20 / $1.17
Bet $15.00 Win, return $33.00
Prob 44.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.99x Steady since tip
Why Five starts for two placings and one win on his record, but his last start was a second at Gold Coast 1400m. He's the best-supported horse on the card and the market has been right all day.
2. To'o (No.9) — $5.00 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.80 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. The Minstrel Boy (No.5) — $5.00 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers on first time and sectional rank 3 for the last 600m. He's drawn wide at barrier 11 and has to work, but he's been backed from $7.00 to $5.00.
Roughie: Qui Rouge (No.12) — $12.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.5% | Place: 25.9% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why Path to winning is a fast closing run from the midfield, with a strong jockey line. He was a seventh at Grafton 1190m last start, but he's been hampered before.
Race 6 – Ballina RSL
Race type: Benchmark 58, 1250m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, and nobody maps to lead outright. Bellarata from barrier 9 and Calvary from barrier 7 are the likeliest to find the front, with Bellarata drawn wide. Toroness and Vetoed, from barrier 10 and 11, need cover from the back. Maurraqa from barrier 4 sits midfield, and the shape works against him in a slow race.
Punty read: Maurraqa is the bet. He's an each-way horse on a moderate-to-slow tempo with a win at Lismore and a strong jockey-trainer line. He's coming off a tenth at Port Macquarie 1200m, so the excuse is that he was held up, and the market has him at $4.20 to $4.50. Bellarata is the danger on the front from the wide draw, and Clubhouse from barrier 3 is the one with the best sectionals in the race.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)
1. Maurraqa (No.2) — $4.80 / $1.80
Bet $9.00 Each Way ($4.50W + $4.50P), collects $29.70 if it wins ($21.60 win + $8.10 place), $8.10 if it only places
Prob 18.5% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.89x Steady since tip
Why Won at Lismore 1010m and has a place at Beaudesert 1050m, so he's a horse who can run a place in a slow race. The slow pace is against him from the midfield, but the each-way ticket covers both ways.
2. Bellarata (No.3) — $4.20 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.9% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Clubhouse (No.4) — $5.50 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.4% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why Fastest sectionals on the card from the last 600m and the strongest recent placings. He's been backed from $8.50 to $5.50, so the market knows something.
Roughie: Vetoed (No.11) — $14.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.2% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 1.01x Steady since tip
Why Path to winning is a slow run up front that leaves the back-marker sprint in play. He's won twice from seven on heavy and his track record at Ballina is strong, but the weight is a question mark, so he's a long shot to get the job done.
SEQUENCE LANES
QUADDIE (R3–R6)
Smart: 4,3,2 / 10,1,3 / 6,9 / 3,4,2 (54 combos x $0.3704 = $20.00) -- 37% flexi
Punty's take: Race 3 has three options, Race 4 and Race 5 are tight with two each, and Race 6 is the open leg with four. Moderate risk, and the flexi is 41.7% against the 30% floor, so the ticket pays out even if one leg goes astray. A short-priced winner in Race 5 won't pay big, so the value sits in Race 6 and Race 3.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Ear muffs make their debut
Kirra's Sister has ear muffs on for the first time today, and she's 4kg up from her last start. That's a horse who has been sent around a bit, so watch the market if the muffs are the difference.
2 - Winkers on for Worthy Stunnah
Worthy Stunnah has winkers on for the first time and has been backed from $3.20 to $2.10. The market is saying the change is working, even if the data says it's a question mark.
3 - The cross-over nose band debut
Prestige Sotirio has a cross-over nose band on for the first time and is the one horse in Race 4 with no map position in the data. Think of him as the mystery guest at the pub.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Ballina's heavy, the rain's coming and the favourites are getting a red-hot look. Back the horses I've told you about, keep the stakes sensible, and if a roughie gets home, don't forget to shout the bloke with the cheat sheet a pint.
