Punty's Punts
Race type: MAIDEN, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, Rock Monster / Tex 'n' Cee / Himalayan Express pace-advantaged, but the best chances are the ones that don't get trapped back
Punty read: This is a slow-setup maiden where the backmarkers can absolutely run on, but only if they get a crack at straightening up. Tex 'n' Cee is the one I trust to keep saving ground and pick up pieces late, while Moose will be there for the same reason but at a better price for exacta-type punters. I'm watching gear changes too, because this is the sort of race where a maiden that "learns" today suddenly turns into a problem.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Tex 'n' Cee (No.1) — $2.85 / $1.37 🏆 2ND
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — Cashed, net -$4.09
Prob 36.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.25x
Why Draws well, maps to a backmarker run but has the right late gears, and the market price looks like it's been cleaned up.
2. Moose (No.3) — $2.90 / $1.37 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.80x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Lunaris (No.8) — $5.00 / $1.75 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.40x
Why Better value angle for getting into the finish late, especially if the inside lanes pinch.
Roughie: Autumn Sally (No.9) — $10.00 / $2.70 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.6% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.71x
Why If the speed collapses and this finds a lane, she's your "oh shit" moment.
Race type: MAIDEN, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Dynastic Lass / Zali's Gift / Playa Del Sol on pace enough to get chances
Punty read: This is Dynastic Lass's race to lose. Barrier 1 and that on-pace profile means she can control where the trouble happens, and maiden races hate chaos when you're holding your position. Playa Del Sol and Zali's Gift are the main threats, but both look like they need everything to go right in the right order. Helios Amigos is the roughie danger if he gets through trouble clean.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Dynastic Lass (No.11) — $2.40 / $1.30 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$18.20
Prob 30.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.19x
Why Barrier 1 plus on-pace intent, she gets first crack at the race, and the market is backing that logic.
2. Playa Del Sol (No.5) — $4.00 / $1.65 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.65x
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Zali's Gift (No.4) — $5.50 / $2.00 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.61x
Why Could be the place angle if the leaders tire, but win value isn't lining up for me.
Roughie: Arrestedevelopment (No.9) — $9.50 / $2.75 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.04x
Why He's there if the tempo turns into a survival test, and the money starts whispering.
Race type: MAIDEN, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Table Talk style pressure expected to make the race honest
Punty read: This one is all about who can handle the pace without burning their engine. Beyond Measure has the class edge and has that "I just keep going" vibe. Encroaching looks the danger because he can sit handy and pounce when the field stretches. Passionenuff is the sort that can lift if the leaders go too fast too early, while Bondex is your value roughie if they get a run.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Beyond Measure (No.1) — $1.90 / $1.15 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$13.50
Prob 36.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.09x
Why Built for this distance and tempo, and the gear up fits the "find the line" script.
2. Encroaching (No.4) — $3.60 / $1.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 30.0% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.47x
Why A real chance — but at $1.60 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Passionenuff (No.12) — $5.50 / $2.00 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.9% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.78x
Why Needs things to break just right, and at $8 you want a clearer ladder.
Roughie: Bondex (No.5) — $21.00 / $2.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.0% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 1.09x
Why If the leaders' legs wobble, Bondex can sprint through the gaps and steal checks.
Race type: MAIDEN, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Flying In The Wind should get first run at them, with Happy Dance close enough to pressure
Punty read: Flying In The Wind looks like the one that's always been meant to do this, not just meant to try. With his map to lead, he avoids the "where do I go?" nonsense. Happy Dance and Magnificent Malcom are the main bodies underneath, but once the leader gets to the right spot, 1200m can get cruel fast. First-up outliers might run on, yet for me, this race is about who controls the opening chapters.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Flying In The Wind (No.13) — $2.55 / $1.40 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$23.25
Prob 38.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.92x
Why He's built to lead here, and the market has kept backing the front-running plan.
2. Happy Dance (No.12) — $4.60 / $1.90 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.80x
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Extreme Ruler (No.1) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.02x
Why Likely needs everything to line up, and I'm not letting that steal my edge.
Roughie: Magnificent Malcom (No.8) — $9.50 / $3.00 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.1% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.71x
Why Can sneak into the frame if the leader gets challenged and collapses slightly.
Race type: HANDICAP, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, My Danny Boy on speed, Ruthless Angel closer in the rhythm of the race
Punty read: Angel Express is the main event in the straight-up profile. Even with My Danny Boy forcing the pace, Angel Express has the kind of action that doesn't panic when the sprint goes up a gear. My Danny Boy is the danger because he can make it hard for everyone else to run their natural last 200m. Champagne Talks can threaten if he gets cover and a straight crack, but this is Angel Express's race shape to lose.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Angel Express (No.8) — $2.10 / $1.14 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$16.50
Prob 44.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.81x
Why Strong pace positioning to get into the finish, and you can just feel the straight-line superiority.
2. My Danny Boy (No.1) — $6.00 / $1.85 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.9% | Place: 59.1% | Value: 1.32x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Ruthless Angel (No.2) — $7.00 / $2.55 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.6% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.37x
Why If the pace holds together a bit too long, she's the one who can keep rolling into place.
Roughie: Champagne Talks (No.3) — $23.00 / $3.70 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.6% | Place: 20.7% | Value: 0.96x
Why Needs a perfect pocket, then a late burst when everyone's looking around.
Race type: HANDICAP, 2200m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, Capable Angel looks to get the right rhythm to attack late
Punty read: This 2200m is slow enough that the finishing burst matters, and that suits Capable Angel's profile perfectly. The key is whether the race stays too compact, because if it does, the on-pacer types can get stuck. Capable Angel looks like he'll find the right angle without wasting energy early. Dandy's Gem and Barney Rommel are your underneath options if the race fractures late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Capable Angel (No.7) — $5.50 / $1.75 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 24.4% | Place: 52.0% | Value: 1.34x
Why Best blend of staying power and the right trip, and he can pick them off without panicking in a slow-run 2200.
2. Dandy's Gem (No.6) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.86x
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Barney Rommel (No.5) — $6.00 / $2.25 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.96x
Why Looks competitive, but he's not the one I'm backing to land the coup.
Roughie: Hot Like Chili (No.9) — $12.00 / $2.85 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.1% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 0.88x
Why If the race gets messy late, he's the one who can surge through tired legs.
Race type: HANDICAP, 1100m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Scream and Bonditram profile as main challengers while Galway Shawl can strike late
Punty read: Galway Shawl is the top pick for a reason, he's consistent and he knows how to put himself around the right part of the field. Scream is the one to watch because he's got the speed to test them early, and that can turn this into a proper battle. Bonditram is the honest grinder who can keep returning to the frame if the leaders tire just enough.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Galway Shawl (No.3) — $1.95 / $1.14 🏆 2ND
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 28.1% | Place: 62.8% | Value: 0.75x
Why He's the most reliable in the sprint chaos, and his style matches the way these 1100m races split.
2. Scream (No.6) — $5.50 / $1.85 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.4% | Place: 52.6% | Value: 1.47x
Why A real chance — but at $1.85 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Bonditram (No.4) — $6.00 / $1.95 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.16x
Why Chance to get into the money, but not enough certainty to override the primary.
Roughie: Desennea (No.2) — $16.00 / $3.10 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.0% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 1.07x
Why If he's delivered late and finds a lane, he can jump a couple of spots fast.
Race type: HANDICAP, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Polyvanova looks like the main leader, Treasured Legacy is the backmarker with a plan
Punty read: Treasured Legacy is the one I want, because on this track profile you can still win from back if you time the run right and the speed doesn't set you up to be swallowed. Polyvanova will try to control it up front, and Uncle Gerard has the kind of profile that can sneak into the finish if the leaders do that thing where they start to think the job's done.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Treasured Legacy (No.14) — $1.50 / $1.12 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$6.50
Prob 40.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.76x
Why Proven class with the right map, and the short price still looks like a fair bet for once.
2. Uncle Gerard (No.4) — $11.00 / $1.85 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.50x
Why A real chance — but at $1.85 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Polyvanova (No.2) — $9.00 / $2.70 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.32x
Why Could absolutely ping along, but I'm not paying for hope at that top-of-market price.
Roughie: Mean Feat (No.5) — $14.00 / $3.40 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.35x
Why If Polyvanova sets it up and the finish opens, Mean Feat can grab a piece.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Bunbury with the rail True on a Good 4, and the sky doing that fake-friendly thing where it might rain, it might not, it might absolutely gaslight you at 11:07pm. Early pace looks like it's got a pulse at times, but you still want class on your side, because Maiden races love a chaos gremlin.
I've built the day around three winners that look like they actually understand their job descriptions, then I've bolted on a multi that's basically the racing version of going "yeah nah, I'll just take the easy route" and praying the universe doesn't laugh. If you're chasing dividends, you're in the right suburb.
Track + tempo notes first: Good 4 with a bit of breeze and some drizzle lurking means you can save money by backing horses that can either lead or at least not get stuck in the wrong part of the track. When the speed is there, you can press. When it's messy, you protect with place or let the roughies run wild.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Bunbury, 1100-2200m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play Fair, with some late-run value if the rain shows)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 21°C, wind SW 29km/h (watch for Rain risk, gusty and cooler feels)
Early lane guess: A bit of pressure around the lead, then the better mid-runners get rolling late
Tempo profile: Slow to moderate early, with a couple of races where the speed does the heavy lifting
Jockeys to follow:
William Pike: big horsepower in the saddle, and can make awkward draws look way more sensible
Ms Madi Derrick: aggressive line into races, good at finding a run when lanes tighten
Shaun O'Donnell: not fazed by grindy races, keeps horses travelling
Stables to respect:
P J Naylor (5 runners): usually backs them with purpose, and they keep finding the line
Rebecca Bayliss (5 runners): strong at getting maidens to run on, their prep patterns suit this kind of track
A G Durrant (4 runners): knows how to mix pace and timing, especially when the market starts hinting
Punty's take:
This card is a classic Bunbury mix, a few races where the speed shapes like it's drawn on a whiteboard, and a few where you can get cooked if you're locked into a "backmarker equals doom" mindset. On a Good 4, you want horses who can either sit close without doing extra work, or who are proven at not dying in the straight.
Race 4 is your "tempo test". Flying In The Wind looks the type to run his race and keep mowing, while the rest of the field are more "hope I get the right pocket" than "I'm beating the champ". Same story later, but with different flavours. Race 5 is the place-leveraged handicap where the market's favourite profile makes sense, but you still want the value horses underneath.
And Race 8, Treasured Legacy is the one you respect, Uncle Gerard is the one you circle when the run of the race opens up. It's the kind of finish where you see daylight and think you're safe, then some other bloke's $7.00 horse grabs it off you like it owns your soul.
What it means for you:
I'm going aggressive in the races that have a clear lead/stalk path. That's where you can land the win without burning your bankroll. That's why the Big 3 spine is built on the three shortest, most reliable-looking win candidates across the card.
For the "place vs win" thinking, focus on races where the tempo is calm enough for horses to be held together, then finish off strongly. That's where you can take a winner that might be a tad short to win, and still get paid on the place when the pressure develops late.
Where you protect yourself, Race 5 and Race 7 are the plays. If you're backing the roughies, do it like you're ordering a third drink, fun, but don't pretend it's a productivity tool.
