✗ MISS -$15 Final

Race type: Benchmark 50, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Into The Fire leads
Punty read: This is a sprint where the leaders get a dream run until they don't. Turf Luck is the market sharpie with new gear, and she's drawn to get a position on the speed. Capital Babe has that "can sneak into the pocket and hang on" profile, and Vainstream has form that says, when luck turns, she's right there. Soho Sushi is the danger type, drifting a bit but still with enough class to run into a place and ruin your quinella plans like a mate borrowing your charger and never returning it.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Capital Babe (No.2) — $4.80 / $2.25 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 25.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.46x
Why Has been running the right races, and the map says she can settle without getting stuck.

2. Turf Luck (No.1) — $1.85 / $1.30 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.9% | Place: 52.3% | Value: 0.53x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.

3. Vainstream (No.3) — $4.60 / $2.25 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.10x

Roughie: Soho Sushi (No.6) — $9.80 / $3.50 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.8% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.81x

✗ MISS -$15 Final

Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, The Wildling prominent
Punty read: This one's a "who can switch off early" maiden, because when the tempo stays slow, every little traffic issue becomes a disaster movie. The Wildling looks like the type who can win while everyone else is still negotiating where to put their feet. Successful Impact is the formline with the pace profile to take advantage if the race opens up. Roy Kelton is value in the market sense, but this is a step where you want the better positioning to actually matter.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

Final

Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Lady Mariana the main danger runner
Punty read: This is a classic Soft 5 sprint where the best horse can win ugly. Lady Mariana has the right temperament profile and the draw to get the run. Barefootinthesnow is the "flies late if you blink" type, and Graceful Thinking has enough place potential to scrape into your trifecta if they bunch up. Setta Icon and O'hatasky are the ones you watch for when the race shapes up wrong for the favourites, but they're more for the numbers game than the main betting.

★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Lady Mariana (No.8) — $2.45 / $1.22 SCR
Bet Tracked — ⊘ Scratched · bet voided
Prob 39.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.34x

✗ MISS -$10 Final

Race type: Class 1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Scorched Lane leads
Punty read: 1600m on a Soft 5 is where the inside carries, but the real fight is mid-race rhythm. Kurithea is the classy runner who can get the right kick, and Alabama Charm and Pure Melody both look like they can sit closer than people think and still finish. Scorched Lane is the leader to respect, he might set it up, then get collared like the villain in a superhero sequel who thinks he's untouchable.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

✓ WON +$10 Final

Race type: Benchmark 65, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, classic grind
Punty read: 2000m and slow tempo on Soft can turn into a tactical survival game, whoever changes gear most economically has the edge. Zonkstar is the likely one to take the inside route and keep building momentum. Toussaint is the danger with a finish, and Midnight Affair has that "I can make ground late if they don't steamroll" profile. Magic Mountain is the live roughie type, but he needs the race to open up for him, otherwise he's stuck doing extra work in wet conditions.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

✗ MISS -$15 Final

Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, King Of Dragons on-pace pressure
Punty read: Slow 1400s are brutal, everyone wants cover because Soft takes its toll on lungs. Cando Attitude looks like the standout with that "get position, then pounce" vibe, and King Of Dragons is the classier speed threat even if he doesn't lead all the way. I've Bean Tryin' is the one who can lurk and then go from ordinary to scary in a straight. Good Prize can run on, but the question is how much is left in the tank after the early grind.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Cando Attitude (No.5) — $3.30 / $1.40 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 31.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.27x

Race type: Class 2, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, Defiance the on-pace threat
Punty read: This is a "place-first, win-later" sort of Class 2 unless you land on the right runner early. Defiance is the obvious map and class play. Kendalia looks like she can run on strong, and Famoso gives you that rough value angle if he gets an economical run. Willingham is a watch for the open draw style, but you need a clean trip, otherwise he's just chasing the race across the track.

✗ MISS -$15 Final

Race type: Benchmark 65, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, Helluva Teen leading
Punty read: 1000m on Soft is where the leaders can live or die by a whisker. Steel Knight is the key runner, he's got the right run style to handle the pressure and still give you a realistic hit. Brutal Belle is the other one with enough speed to keep grinding, and Helluva Teen is the leader type, he might control it longer than people expect. Xspiritous is the roughie because he brings enough class to be dangerous even from further out, but he needs the gaps to appear like a door opening in a horror movie.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

Punty's Early Mail

Rightio Loose Units, Canberra on a Soft 5 with the rail at 7m, and the track's got that wet sponge vibe where timing matters, momentum pays, and weak ones get rinsed. This is the sort of card where the early speed brigade gets rewarded, but you still need one back-end weirdo to pay the electricity bill.

I'm looking at a meeting that's basically speed versus squelch. Races with a genuine tempo, the map favourites should get first run at it. Then you've got the values, where the market drifts and suddenly the "how the hell?" winner drops in like a surprise character on the last episode of your favourite TV show.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Canberra, 1000-1600m card
Rail: 7m
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play Speed and Staying Power types)
Weather: Sunny, 19°C (watch for gusts and the track holding up)
Early lane guess: On pace to midfield, then late splits
Tempo profile: Genuine pace in the main programs, plenty of leaders, not many freebies in the straight-up sprint grind
Jockeys to follow:
Alysha Collett: active rides today, and she keeps getting horses into play
Jean Van Overmeire: steady hand, no panic in traffic, usually where the run comes from
Jeff Penza: reliable in these Canberra midfields, knows how to save ground
Stables to respect:
G P Vella (7 runners): bunch of chances and they're not afraid to have a crack in soft conditions
K Dryden & L Snowden (7 runners): they target this sort of meeting, and they bring them ready
Luke Pepper (6 runners): good structure through races, keeps finding the right trip

Punty's take:

Canberra on a Soft 5 is where "held up" turns into "saved ground" and where you've gotta respect horses that can handle kickback. The pace-map matters a lot here. If you're sitting too far back, you're basically hoping the race has a Hollywood script and the leaders get deleted.

My backbone is built around the obvious win-threats in the tight races, but I'm also circling where the market looks uncomfortable. When a price moves the wrong way and the horse still has a logical map, that's when the punter in you stops being polite and starts getting paid.

What it means for you:

Go aggressive in the races where the tempo is genuine, because the on-pace runners are doing more than "trying", they're setting the race up for their own petrol. If the leaders bunch up and start chopping each other, you want the one stalking with enough room to whack through.

For value, I'm protecting the places and saving the win-only angst for when the map and gear line up. There are a couple of runners where the market's missing something, and I reckon they can sneak into your quaddie with a late lunge, like the mate who always turns up after everyone's left the pub.
