Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, open bunch vibes, and the front-midfield horses get every chance to set the kick
Punty read:
This one screams "map to the front and hold your nerve" on a Soft 5. No.3 Shines Discreetly is the obvious classier profile and has the right sort of tactical positioning in a race that looks like it could stay bunched longer than usual. She's got that "try not to do anything dumb" vibe, and the market's already showing she's live, especially with the track and the confidence around her.
But I'm not ignoring the value on the edges. No.5 Timely Needs has the finish, and if the leaders don't fire early, she'll sneak into the lane you actually want. And No.9 Sounds Of Peace is one of those that can lift with blinkers turning up, especially if the race turns into a scramble late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Shines Discreetly (No.3) — $3.40 / $1.52 🏆 3RD
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — Cashed, net -$3.12
Prob 19.5% | Place: 60.2% | Value: 0.60x
Why Short price but still has genuine upside, she's in the right spot in an open bunch, and the Soft track can reward a clean run with no panic.
2. Timely Needs (No.5) — $4.20 / $1.65 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.62x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Sounds Of Peace (No.9) — $5.50 / $1.95 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.42x
Why Blinkers first time is the little spark, and if the pace stays sluggish he can sprint through at the finish.
Roughie: Timmie Lad (No.6) — $9.40 / $2.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.32x
Why If the leaders wobble and the Soft steals distance, he's the type that can still run over the top late.
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, speed up front, and anything without good position might get swallowed
Punty read:
At 1200 with genuine pace, you want a horse that can either lead or be stalking in the first two lines. No.13 Olindah has gate manners and the market clearly wants her on top. On Soft 5, the speedy ones can kick through the sting before everyone else's legs get heavy.
The two that interest me for the exact reasons punters hate, because they're annoying, are No.7 Effrontery and No.3 Kion's Kingdom. One might be value if the pace gets a bit too hot, the other might be the one that sits perfect and lifts when the leaders start stacking up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Olindah (No.13) — $2.70 / $1.40 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$25.50
Prob 34.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.90x
Why He's the standout at this trip, should get the right part of the track early, and Soft running suits his style of action.
2. Kion's Kingdom (No.3) — $5.00 / $1.90 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.90x
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Effrontery (No.7) — $8.60 / $2.25 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.29x
Why If he holds his on-pace spot, he can be dangerous, just not the day to double up.
Roughie: Vabuiagi (No.12) — $6.00 / $2.25 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.70x
Why He can get into the race, but for this setup I want my money where the legs look more confident.
Race type: Class 2, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so a smooth run and a pocket near the action wins more than heroic wide moves
Punty read:
1600 in a slow tempo is basically a chess match, and No.2 Thickskinned looks like the cleanest piece. She's the sort that benefits from this kind of run, because she doesn't need to be doing a bunch early to be effective. If the race stays pedestrian, those "sit and pounce" moves start to pay.
No.4 Stollaway Ned is the danger if the race opens up and she gets the split. And No.8 Snowdonia has the staying-on profile for a Soft track, especially if they bunch late and she can roll forward without having to sprint too early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Thickskinned (No.2) — $2.55 / $1.25 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$16.27
Prob 33.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.05x
Why She's built for slow tempo races, and the way she maps means she should get the run without being forced into sprinting.
2. Stollaway Ned (No.4) — $4.20 / $1.62 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.6% | Place: 51.7% | Value: 0.96x
Why A real chance — but at $1.62 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Snowdonia (No.8) — $5.10 / $1.65 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.97x
Why She can sneak into the finish, but you're chasing value and this one's tight.
Roughie: Cavaretta (No.7) — $9.00 / $2.50 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.95x
Why If the race turns into chaos and lanes appear, he's a roughie chance, but we're not overloading today.
Race type: Class 2, 1100m
Map & tempo: Sprint, moderate pace, and positions early are everything, especially on Soft
Punty read:
This is the kind of 1100 where the first straight decides the story. No.6 Novalargo is the "do not take me lightly" horse, and blinkers off plus class makes him a live pick to keep poking his nose in front. If he gets into that on-pace rhythm, the Soft can actually help him because he can keep going without being immediately run down.
No.2 Just Plain Nuts is the obvious other danger, he's proven early in this setup. And No.8 Jenni The Cat is the hard-luck type on her day, especially if she's able to settle and then sprint late rather than get stuck working.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Novalargo (No.6) — $4.40 / $1.75 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P) — Cashed, net -$1.88
Prob 28.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.56x
Why He maps to hold position, and in these sprint handicaps that's often the difference between a decent run and a winning one.
2. Just Plain Nuts (No.2) — $5.50 / $2.00 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.3% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.62x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Jenni The Cat (No.8) — $4.40 / $1.75 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.4% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.95x
Why She can place, but the value on win is a bit ropey for how this race is tightening up.
Roughie: Course Of Action (No.4) — $12.00 / $3.30 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.89x
Why If they bunch and someone gets a pocket, he can clunk onto the placings, but winning is the ask.
Race type: Group 3, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, and with 1200 on Soft, the early battle becomes a ticket to the finish
Punty read:
This is the race where the leaders get to earn their keep. No.4 Who's In Dev is short for a reason, and the map says he's meant to be involved. In genuine pace races, it's often the one who can stay switched on without dropping out early who goes hardest late.
No.5 Geegees Downpour is the one that can run into the placings with the right run, and No.1 Wild Dancer has a lot of talent but needs the race to unfold kindly for her. I like the look of both, but the bet structure today is built on win confidence and smart coverage elsewhere.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.69 pool)
1. Who's In Dev (No.4) — $2.70 / $1.52 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $11.69 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$11.69
Prob 27.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.93x
Why Genuine speed on, he should get a measured run and hit the line with momentum.
2. Geegees Downpour (No.5) — $5.20 / $2.35 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.1% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.32x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Wild Dancer (No.1) — $5.70 / $2.35 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.3% | Place: 28.3% | Value: 1.21x
Why Big talent, value's there, but again, win exposure is locked in with the structure.
Roughie: Street Diva (No.2) — $5.00 / $2.25 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.95x
Why If she lands a perfect spot she can slot in, but for a win you need a few gears to click.
Race type: BM68, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and the forward runners get a huge advantage on Soft
Punty read:
Here's the banker-shaped race. No.1 Simply Deep is the one that keeps finding the right bit of track and keeps getting the job done. In a BM over 1400, you want someone with class and position, and this setup screams his name.
No.4 Sevillana is the main threat if she can hold contact in the first half and not get stuck doing extra work. And No.2 Stone Cold Stunner is the classic "might be in the finish if the race opens up" type, especially with her run style.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Simply Deep (No.1) — $1.90 / $1.20 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 40.6% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.94x
Why He maps on-pace, he's got the Soft form profile, and he's the type to win like a pro.
2. Sevillana (No.4) — $4.60 / $2.00 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.35x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Stone Cold Stunner (No.2) — $4.80 / $2.00 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.20x
Why She's live late, but not enough to steal the spotlight from the top win bet.
Roughie: Within Sight (No.6) — $10.00 / $3.40 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 22.4% | Value: 0.90x
Why Backmarker types need everything to go right, and today we want the clearer run scenarios.
Race type: BM66, 2000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, classic staying track vibes, position and balance matter
Punty read:
2000 on Soft is where you can feel the ground punishing bad trips. No.2 Merlin Beach is the standout for me. He's on-pacing the right way and looks like he'll put himself in the firing line, which is what you need when the finish isn't a straight sprint.
No.3 Johnnie Pinch is a live place and a possible upset if the race falls apart late. But he's got to work into it, while Merlin Beach can just let his run build.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Merlin Beach (No.2) — $1.95 / $1.15 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 47.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.11x
Why The pacing and positioning here fit like a glove, and Soft running gives him the chance to keep grinding.
2. Johnnie Pinch (No.3) — $3.00 / $1.52 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 28.9% | Place: 54.3% | Value: 1.04x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Native Clan (No.4) — $5.50 / $2.35 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.2% | Place: 30.8% | Value: 0.74x
Why He can slot into the finish, just not the main character today.
Roughie: Sugoi Legend (No.6) — $18.00 / $4.00 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.8% | Place: 20.7% | Value: 0.83x
Why If the race turns into a back-to-front job, he can grab a cheque. Winning is harder.
Race type: BM68, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, small field, and whoever controls early gets the run of the race
Punty read:
Small field, big pressure. This one's about who can be in front with options. No.2 Alpine Fury is the money, he's on-pace, he's well placed, and he's the type to make the other three chase in circles.
No.3 Eaglefurther is next in line to fill the gaps if the tempo shifts. No.1 Tuskegee can be annoying, but the Soft track and the tactical reality in a 4-horse field means he needs everyone else to make mistakes, and today I just can't justify it as a win play.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Alpine Fury (No.2) — $1.75 🏆 3RD
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 58.4% | Place: 2.2% | Value: 1.17x
Why If he gets to the front early, it's a short evening for the rest. This is exactly that kind of "don't overthink it" race.
2. Eaglefurther (No.3) — $2.80 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 26.2% | Place: 2.2% | Value: 0.85x
Why A real chance — but at that price the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Tuskegee (No.1) — $4.60 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 2.2% | Value: 0.56x
Why Needs the race to unfold perfectly, and perfect doesn't happen twice in a day like this.
Roughie: Sir Jag (No.5) — $7.50 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.3% | Place: 2.2% | Value: 0.99x
Why If something goes pear-shaped and he gets a dream run, you're alive. Otherwise, enjoy the story.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.

That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Launceston on a Soft 5 where the ground's keen to do violent things to your straight line thinking, I reckon this card rewards the brave and the slightly unhinged. The rail's +3m entire, so expect the track to still be honest, just a bit more fiddly, and pace will be doing a little cardio routine all day. If you're looking for a simple day, mate, you picked the wrong sport.
What I'm building around is a "speed you can see, value you can feel" theme. We've got a heap of races where the leaders map to get every chance, and where the market is either firming the right horses or drifting them into absolute madness. We'll go through it properly race by race, but the spine is clear: Race 6 with Simply Deep, Race 7 with Merlin Beach, and Race 8 with Alpine Fury. Three wins, one big grin, and hopefully no unnecessary heartburn.
And yep, I can hear the naysayers already, "Punty, you always go hard." Good. That's how you catch a day when the wheels actually line up. Now let's get to it.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Launceston, 1200-2000m card
Rail: +3m Entire
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play Speed vs Stamina, with leaders having a real say)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 24°C, humidity 30%, wind 9km/h N (watch for gusts, but no rain coming)
Early lane guess: Quieter lanes at the front, then a bit of outside running late when the Soft soaks up the action
Tempo profile: Mixed, with a couple of slow-ish races that can turn the finish into a brawl
Jockeys to follow:
Anthony Darmanin: Busy rider today, and you can't ignore his seat time on main chances
Ms Erica Byrne Burke: Clean work rate on horses with a genuine chance of giving you a sight
Kyle Hocking: When he's on, these BM types can box-seat their way into the placings
Stables to respect:
G J Stevenson (9 runners): Typically patient build-up, then they pop when the race shape suits
J L Keys (6 runners): Strong support on debut or improvement spots, keep an eye on the map
S Gandy (6 runners): Gets them ready for the exact conditions, especially through wet or Soft tracks
Punty's take:
This Soft 5 at Launceston is the kind of surface where if you're parked wide or stuck behind a wall, it costs you more than you think. But because the rail is staying at +3m the whole way, the track shouldn't turn into a total rubbish heap for outside runners. Translation, lanes matter, and pace matters more. If the race is genuinely slow, expect the finish to bunch up and the "good late burst" brigade to get their moment.
Market-wise, I'm watching the firming and I'm watching the drifting. When horses like One Star Dream (Race 1) and Wild Dancer (Race 5) are hanging around as value shouts, that's usually the sign either the trial wasn't a circus, or the market's overlooking a setup. Meanwhile, when something drifts hard, it's often a clue connections are gambling on a better run scenario. Those are the days you either nail it, or you wear the bruises and learn.
If you're chasing a simple bet plan, you won't get one. But if you're chasing winners, you're in luck, because the "Big 3 + Multi" is the cleanest story on the card.
What it means for you:
Be aggressive early where the horses are mapping to be part of the race. In sprinty stuff, the Soft track punishes lazy starts, so I'm prioritising the ones that can get into a rhythm. For the longer shakes, I'm looking for runners that can settle with cover, then unwind late without being asked to sprint through mud.
The value angles are real today. The market's saying "short it, short it, short it" in a couple of places, but it's also letting some roughies inflate out to the kind of odds you can't just toss in the bin. If you're playing it smart, you back the obvious spine, then you sprinkle the roughies that can jump the queue if the pace collapses or someone gets held up.
Rightio, let's race by race and do the job properly.
