Punty's Punts
Race type: Benchmark 56+, 1750m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, mid-runners get first crack at the finish, backmarkers need luck
Punty read:
Another Nephew is drawn nicely and should be able to sit in the midfield without having to overcook early. With the pace projected as slow, it turns into a tactical slog where the leaders might not go hard enough to make the trip lethal. That suits a horse who can go from stalking to running without needing the whole race to collapse. Big Shots looks like the natural danger if he can overcome that drifting vibe, because when the field doesn't sprint, it rewards the ones that can hold their ground late.
Fries With That is the one that scares me a little in a "he gets a decent position, and then the race comes back to him" way. Space Ace is your Roughie, because on a Good track, when a price looks that big and the map says he's involved, it usually means he can run into the placings or more if the speed does something funny.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17.50 pool)
1. Another Nephew (No.1) — $3.20 / $1.37 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$29.70
Prob 29.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.16x
Why Slow pace suits his sit-and-sprint style, and the draw lets him find rhythm without getting buried.
2. Big Shots (No.2) — $3.50 / $1.45 🏆 4TH
Bet $4.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$4.00
Prob 21.0% | Place: 58.6% | Value: 0.92x
Why Even with the market wobble, he's the right profile for this tempo, and he's live late.
3. Fries With That (No.4) — $4.00 / $1.55 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.3% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.92x
Why If he jumps into a pocket, he can run a cheeky race, but the safer place band just isn't there.
Roughie: Space Ace (No.8) — $9.00 / $2.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.01x
Why Big price for a horse that can get into the race shape, if the leaders fail to open it up.
Race type: Benchmark 68+, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, you want to be within striking distance early
Punty read:
This is a speed race in disguise. Cruise To Victory looks like he can sit on the action, and when the tempo is genuine, horses like this get to stay balanced and let the turn of foot do the work. Red Rebel is next in line, and he's the one who looks ready to press into the race story early. If the leaders keep going, that's when the midfield isn't a graveyard, it's a launchpad.
Weapons Hot is the value angle for this sprint, because the price and the pace scenario are aligned. Galaxy Affair is the kind of backmarker you can still respect, but at 1200m on a Good deck, "respect" is as far as I'm going.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Cruise To Victory (No.2) — $2.65 / $1.52 🏆 WINNER
Bet $12.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$19.80
Prob 24.4% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.81x
Why The pace is honest, his style fits it, and the run should set up for him to be there when it counts.
2. Red Rebel (No.4) — $3.70 / $1.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.2% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.12x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Weapons Hot (No.6) — $5.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.0% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.31x
Why He's got the right pace profile, but the ticket's already doing the heavy lifting in the win line.
Roughie: Galaxy Affair (No.1) — $11.00 / $3.50 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.3% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 1.00x
Why If he gets shuffled back and loses ground, he's basically cooked at 1200m.
Race type: Class 1, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, on-pace runners get first crack, pockets matter
Punty read:
Magic Carats and Costa Star are the two I keep circling. Magic Carats can land on the right speed and with blinkers back in, he should be better balanced between runs. Costa Star at this sort of price is the tasty part, because he's the on-pace style that can keep going through the line if the tempo stays moderate. This isn't a "hero in front forever" race, it's more like "who's still rolling when everyone else stops thinking."
Coupe Deburj is there as a rolling danger if he gets a good run, Addictive Dream can run into it, and Dashing Diva is an outside swing for the exotics, but in a field this size, I want to keep it simple.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.50 pool)
1. Magic Carats (No.1) — $3.20 / $1.52 🏆 2ND
Bet $13.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 21.8% | Place: 67.5% | Value: 0.90x
Why Blinkers back, his pattern suits 1200m, and he can take a run through the middle without needing the race to fall apart.
2. Costa Star (No.2) — $4.80 / $1.85 🏆 3RD
Bet $6.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$5.53
Prob 21.3% | Place: 59.3% | Value: 1.32x
Why He's on the right speed map and the price says he's due to be involved late.
3. Coupe Deburj (No.4) — $7.50 / $2.45 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.9% | Place: 48.0% | Value: 0.96x
Why Needs everything to go right, and the betting band for place isn't paying enough.
Roughie: Dashing Diva (No.8) — $10.00 / $2.90 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.8% | Place: 25.2% | Value: 0.88x
Why If the on-pace group hooks up early, she can get the right run, but it's a supporting act, not the lead.
Race type: Benchmark 56+, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, sprint pressure, rail keeps the honest lanes honest
Punty read:
Kimberley Currency is the one they want to see on speed, and barrier four gives him the chance to sit closer rather than getting stuck in traffic. Smart Return is the other key, because with blinkers again plus the gear tweaks, he's the type that can sharpen up and give you a real honest contest. This race is about lane usage. If you get stuck wide or in the wrong pocket, 1000m doesn't forgive you.
Shooting Kontiki is the stalking danger, and Coondle can be there late if the leaders don't go straight past. But I'm not overthinking it, this looks like a speed-math sprint where the better maps cash.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Kimberley Currency (No.2) — $3.30 / $1.30 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 31.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.30x
Why He's drawn to take the right part of the track, and the 1000m tempo should let him stay involved.
2. Smart Return (No.8) — $7.50 / $2.45 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.5% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.45x
Why A real chance — but at $2.45 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Shooting Kontiki (No.1) — $6.00 / $2.05 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 46.0% | Value: 0.98x
Why Can be in the finish, but he's a touch exposed for the way this ticket is built.
Roughie: Lady Coco (No.7) — $12.50 / $3.20 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.4% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.16x
Why Needs a clean trip and a split in the field, and that's asking for a few things.
Race type: Open, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, 2000m means positions through the middle decide it
Punty read:
This is where the Cup instincts start. Kings Sicario is the main storyline on paper, and he's drawn better than some who need to launch from the back. If the pace is honest, backmarkers still get a chance at 2000m, but only if they don't lose touch early. Zadar Rock has the right sort of profile for a race where the speed is there early and keeps running, which can allow him to hit the line with real purpose.
Dynamic One looks a bit handcuffed by value, but Star Testymony and Hard Questions are the ones that can sneak into the trifecta chaos if the field strings out. I'm with Kings Sicario to lead this party, and Zadar Rock is the money-looking second.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Kings Sicario (No.3) — $3.60 / $1.57 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $7.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 23.6% | Place: 59.9% | Value: 1.12x
Why He's built for a genuine tempo 2000m, and he should get a run that turns into real momentum late.
2. Zadar Rock (No.1) — $7.00 / $2.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.25x
Why A real chance — but at $2.50 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Dynamic One (No.2) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.0% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.87x
Why Needs a very specific run, and the place band just isn't there.
Roughie: Candlelight Sherif (No.6) — $11.00 / $3.30 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.4% | Place: 28.7% | Value: 1.22x
Why If the race opens up, she can go close, but she's not the one I want carrying the whole ticket.
Race type: Benchmark 56+, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, midfield lanes can win, late lanes get paid
Punty read:
This one is a two-horse backbone race in my head, Solar System and Tango Rhythm. Solar System is the sort that can find a spot, travel, and then pick up when the real sprint starts. Tango Rhythm is sharp enough to press into the race without doing anything stupid, and that sort of runner is always dangerous on a Good track where the finish gets slick.
Leading Taddy might look live but is a touch suspect in value, and Western Impact can run into a placing if the race doesn't go too hard. But I want the bets to reflect the race shape, and the race shape is pointing to those two.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.00 pool)
1. Solar System (No.1) — $4.20 / $1.70 🏆 2ND
Bet $17.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$17.00
Prob 25.2% | Place: 57.7% | Value: 1.39x
Why He maps into the right part of the track for a 1400m, and the setup suits his ability to keep building late.
2. Tango Rhythm (No.6) — $4.20 / $1.72 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 22.7% | Place: 67.0% | Value: 1.25x
Why If the pace is moderate and not fireworks, she gets every chance to run through the line.
3. Leading Taddy (No.4) — $6.00 / $2.20 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.5% | Place: 38.7% | Value: 0.82x
Why His run can be there, but the ticket doesn't need him given the other two are doing the heavy work.
Roughie: Keytrade (No.2) — $13.00 / $3.40 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.9% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.83x
Why Needs a perfect midfield story to get into the top end, and at $13 that's risky for a roughie slot.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 1,2,4,8 / 2,1,8,7 / 3,2,1,6 / 6,1,4 (192 combos x $0.18 = $35.00) -- 18% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Another Nephew (Race 1, No.1)✓ Won — $3.20
2 - Kimberley Currency (Race 4, No.2) — $3.30
3 - Solar System (Race 6, No.1)✗ — $4.20

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Carnarvon on a Good track with the rail jammed true, sunshine out and not a drop of drama early. This is one of those meetings where the speed does a lot of the talking, then stamina has a little swing of its legs in the back half, and everyone who plays dead gets bitten late. Let's go.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Good, 1000m-2000m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good (expected to play Speed on with a rail that keeps you honest)
Weather: Sunny, 25°C, watch for gusty bits, no real rain influence
Early lane guess: Quaddie chaos is coming from the middle, but the top end is still logical
Tempo profile: Slow early in the opener, then a genuine-looking sprint tempo and a couple of races where the leaders can hold court
Jockeys to follow:
Jason Li: Knows how to tuck in and pounce, right across the card
Ebony Johnson: Fast hands, good at making the run look easy
Natasha Faithfull: Often locks into the right spot and then lets the horse do the work
Stables to respect:
Aaron Pateman (8 runners): Showing up a stack, and when he sends, he means it
Leigh Murray (6 runners): Loves getting them ready for the local surface and the right pace
D R Pateman (4 runners): Sharp in the short stuff, usually has them primed
Punty's take:
Carnarvon today feels like speed is king, especially in the short races where getting a trail matters less than getting position early. Race 1 is a classic "slow pace, strong finishing value" scenario, where the middlers can steal it if they get a clean run, and the backmarkers are there to fill out the party photos. Race 2 is proper sprint brain. If you're not in the first few, you're basically asking the horse to do a miracle job on a Good track.
Race 3 through 6 is your Quaddie zone, and it's where the day swings from "easy-ish" to "mate, why did you need that one runner to miss by a head?" Race 4 shapes like a rail-hugger contest where the best map gets rewarded. Race 5 is a 2000m Cup-style test where the leaders set it up and the ones that travel through the middle sections take the prize. Then Race 6 is the mixer where two horses are likely to do the heavy lifting, and everyone else has to get super lucky.
What it means for you:
I'm building the spine around three winners that map well and still look fair in the odds. Then I'm sprinkling the Roughie where the price feels too big for the style of race it should be. In plain punter terms, Race 1 is where I want to be involved without getting sentimental. Race 4 and Race 6 are where I'm happy to lean in, because the pace profile lines up with the gears and the barriers.
If you're playing a Quaddie, you don't need perfection. You need the right sort of structure. Stick to the lanes: tighter legs where the favourite-ish types are likely to hold the key, then spread just enough where the map can flip the script. And yeah, if you've got a mate who keeps buying roughies in races that are clearly tempo-managed, tell him Punty said hi and walk away.
