1800m · Benchmark 74; · 12:10
✗ MISS -$10 Final

Race type: Benchmark 74, 1800m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, pressure on leaders, wind helps the finishing burst
Punty read:
This one's a proper "who can hang on through the grind?" 1800m. Fear No Evil and Slane want the front, but with the rail out and the wind keeping the straight lively, the place and run-on types matter. I love the way Politely Dun and Emperor Tzu set up as either a stalking threat or a late runner depending on how the early picture unfolds, and the value case for Jenni Multabella is real, she's the sort of mare that can lift late when everyone else is starting to do the maths.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Jenni Multabella (No.16) — $5.40 / $2.00 🏆 2ND
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 20.2% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.26x
Why Big price she's not getting, and she's built for a late surge. If they go moderate up front, she gets first run at the finish.

2. Emperor Tzu (No.3) — $6.20 / $2.25 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 49.0% | Value: 1.05x
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Cavalry (No.14) — $5.85 / $2.15 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.3% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.92x
Why She's capable and drawn for a run, but I want better value than what you're paying.

Roughie: Enviable (No.8) — $10.50 / $3.30 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.01x
Why If the pace gets a touch sloppy and she can run on without getting shuffled, she can jag a slice and make the quinella crowd sweat.

✗ MISS -$8 Final

Race type: Open, 1800m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Quick Finish types in play
Punty read:
This is a "who survives the first half" 1800m. With quick speed around, the best thing you can do is not chase the wrong leader too early. Arashi Flash and Quick Finish are the ones to watch for position, but I'm all about the place pressure here, and Frank Whisper is the sort that can plug on into the money if the front group stretches.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Arashi Flash (No.1) — $3.55 / $1.45 🏆 4TH
Bet $7.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 21.3% | Place: 68.8% | Value: 0.88x
Why He's got the early zip, and with genuine pace on, he doesn't need to do the extra work, he's right in the pocket.

2. Icy You (No.3) — $4.35 / $1.62 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.4% | Place: 63.3% | Value: 1.07x
Why A real chance — but at $1.62 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Frank Whisper (No.2) — $6.20 / $2.05 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.6% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.31x
Why The slow-draw run doesn't scare me at 1800m if the tempo stays genuine, because plugging late is the whole game here.

Roughie: Bohemian Boy (No.5) — $9.50 / $2.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.5% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.13x
Why If the speed collapses, he can sneak into the frame. Otherwise, it's just a big-odds prayer.

✗ MISS -$10 Final

Race type: Benchmark 100, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, sprint chaos, on-pace pressure
Punty read:
1100m at Caulfield is all about who gets first run at the straight and who doesn't get boxed. With Winnasedge and Bev's Nine on the speed, you want them in the front half, not too far off it. This is also a race where the "I'm going to keep running" horses get rewarded, which is why Spywire is dangerously live if they go quick early and someone has to make a decision at the 300m.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Winnasedge (No.2) — $4.20 / $1.70 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 19.5% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.98x
Why Loves the track and the draw is workable. If the pace stays honest, she's not giving up easy.

2. Bev's Nine (No.3) — $5.05 / $1.90 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.3% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.26x
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Spywire (No.1) — $6.00 / $2.15 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.9% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.28x
Why She's built for this, and the early tempo suits her style. If the race opens up, she gets a clean run and then it's game over for the pretenders.

Roughie: Don't Hope Do (No.7) — $13.50 / $3.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 0.73x

✗ MISS -$13 Final

Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, mid-race positioning matters at the 1400
Punty read:
1400m is where you feel it if you're stuck too far back, and with the pace not sprinting away, the horse who can settle and then find the line is the one. Portinari is my go-to. Winkers off first time is the kind of gear change that can fix a horse that's been doing a little too much thinking. Profligate and Saintly Dancer are the ones who can run the race honestly and force that late sprint, and Tolaga Bay is the quiet danger if they overcook the front.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Portinari (No.6) — $4.45 / $1.80 🏆 4TH
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 20.9% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.08x
Why First-time winkers off, and the profile screams "let me relax early, then I sprint." Nice each-way safety on a proper Caulfield type.

2. Profligate (No.5) — $4.30 / $1.80 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.4% | Place: 67.5% | Value: 0.97x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.

3. Saintly Dancer (No.10) — $6.65 / $2.35 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 49.0% | Value: 1.05x
Why Can run into a placing if the race gets strung out. But Portinari is my better structure.

Roughie: Aethera (No.4) — $13.00 / $3.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 26.8% | Value: 1.17x
Why Needs the right ride and a clean run. If the pack splits at the right time, she can lift late and make it interesting.

✓ WON +$22 Final

Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so positioning becomes everything
Punty read:
Slow tempo 1400m at Caulfield is dangerous, because the winner is usually the one who can sprint without getting trapped behind a wall. Blind Raise looks like the horse built for it, quick enough early to keep travelling, then switches off and hits the straight. Wolf Gap is the main alternate, with the sort of value that screams "if they overthink the pace, I'm there."

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Blind Raise (No.3) — $2.70 / $1.22 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$22.10
Prob 37.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.12x
Why Fast enough to sit where it matters, and with the pace slow, she's the one who can explode at the correct moment. This is speed boss stuff.

2. Wolf Gap (No.5) — $3.47 / $1.40 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.93x

Prob 16.8% | Place: 56.7% | Value: 1.05x

Roughie: Alchemistic (No.9) — $16.00 / $3.40 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.8% | Place: 28.9% | Value: 1.07x

Punty read:
1200m means you either get the right position or you burn at the wrong time. Bridal Waltz is right in the pocket of what wins races like this, she should sit close enough without cooking herself. Point Barrow is the "if the pace is hot, I'm still dangerous" type, and Custom is the sort that can bridge the gap and hit the line. The danger is getting seduced by horses out of position in a race this short.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Bridal Waltz (No.10) — $2.52 / $1.32 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 36.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.98x

Race type: Open, 1800m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so it turns into a strategy game
Punty read:
Slow 1800s are hilarious, because everyone thinks it's a stroll until the last 600m. Cosmic Crusader and Lindermann are the controlling types, and with the tempo not burning early, they can dictate without being asked too soon. Birdman is the danger when he's able to drop in and then launch. Buckaroo is a roughie who needs something to go wrong in front, then he can creep into the picture.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Cosmic Crusader (No.5) — $2.65 / $1.12 🏆 2ND
Bet $7.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 34.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.98x

2. Lindermann (No.1) — $2.92 / $1.15 🏆 UNPLACED

Roughie: Buckaroo (No.2) — $10.50 / $2.20 🏆 UNPLACED

Prob 8.6% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.94x

This is where the staying power and the run-on ability team up. Zahrann has the market profile, but the reason I'm not over-trusting him is because 2000m at Caulfield can turn into a long hold-up nightmare if you're stuck in traffic. Saint George is the value swing for me, and Deakin is a genuine inclusion because these middle-distance races often reward the horse that can keep grinding late. Machine Gun Gracie is the one to respect if the race breaks wide.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

Punty read:
This is a classic 1400 battle, where the pace is real enough to knock a few out of the top end, but not real enough to give you a free ride. Lady Shenandoah is the main event to watch, and she's the kind of horse who can come off the speed and still strike before everyone else. Evaporate is the value play, the sort that can lift if the race isn't a sprint to the line for the first 300m. Sepals is a sneaky place threat when the track bias and the run lines line up.

Punty's Early Mail

PUNTY EARLY MAIL, Caulfield (2026-09-19)

Rightio Loose Units, Caulfield's sitting Good 4, rail out 7m and the wind's doing that proper "closers get paid" shuffle, so get ready for horses to steamroll late like the final episode of your favourite show.

Fast opener, slow burn, this track suits runners who can travel and then kick on, and it absolutely punishes flapping at the wrong time. You'll see a few races where the leaders look great at the 600m, then it turns into a different movie at the 300m, that's just Caulfield doing Caulfield things.

Anyway, here's my spine for the day, then I'll walk you through every race like we're having a betshop chat, with lanes and multi options at the end.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Good 4, 1,100m to 2,000m card
Rail: Out 7m Entire Circuit
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play true, with a late-wind assist for closers)
Weather: Mostly sunny, 19°C, gusty, moderate wind (watch for a fair dinkum finishing burst)
Early lane guess: Back a "midfield to mow them down" lane early, then go wider on the turn
Tempo profile: Genuine-to-moderate, with the wind helping sustain a longer sprint
Jockeys to follow:
Craig Williams: handles this track pressure well, plus he's riding the right sort of profiles around Caulfield
Damian Lane: clean hands early, strong finishing response late, perfect for the 1400m to 2000m grind
Billy Egan: loves a run on the speed or a smart position behind it, and can jump a gap when needed
Stables to respect:
C J Waller (10 runners): the map-and-gear combo is the real deal today, you'll see them in the finish in a few races
C Maher (8 runners): they target these class setups, and when their horse is right, the market usually snaps to it
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (7 runners): consistent with their profiles, especially when the race shape gives them an easy route

Punty's take:

Caulfield under wind and Good 4 is basically a "sprint with a steering wheel" circuit. Leaders can get away with it early, but the straight wind keeps the finish alive for longer, so if you're backing something, make sure it has an out in the last 200m, not just a nice story at the 800m.

The other thing I'm watching is market psychology. When a horse starts firming like it's got a job to do, I respect it, but when the drift is telling you the market's searching for a new answer, I get pickier. That's how you avoid getting mugged by a leader who stops when the real business starts.

What it means for you:

Be aggressive where the race shape supports it. That means backing the on-pace types in the sprint and classic distances when they're drawn to hold position, then getting smarter with your value plays for the middle races where interference and wide runs can swing the finish.

For your tickets today, I'm keeping the "banker" bets tight early, then opening up with the chaos legs in the late quaddie style races. If you want the easy path, trust the Big 3 spine, then treat the wide lanes as fun, not religion. You'll have enough chances to get paid without donating your bankroll to the racing gods.
