Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden Plate, 900m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, leaders likely to stack and keep it honest
Punty read: Excelluna (No.8) is the class of the fairytale here, and she's got blinkers first time with a pace-friendly map. The big danger is the speed pressure, because maidens can get messy, but that tailwind helps anything that's still travelling at the 500m mark. Stromatolite (No.6) is live if the market overcooked her earlier, but I don't think you outsmart a horse that's clearly been backed for a reason.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Excelluna (No.8) — $2.00 / $2.00 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$15.00
Prob 44.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.12x
Why Blinkers on, sits right in the race flow, and with genuine pace it should be her turn to bully the finish.
2. Stromatolite (No.6) — $3.80 / $1.45 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.87x
Why A real chance — but at $1.45 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Monte Shell (No.9) — $6.00 / $1.82 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 0.58x
Why Price drift and confidence isn't enough for me to chase a win in a pace-on sprint.
Roughie: Hidden News (No.5) — $10.00 / $2.55 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.12x
Why If the leaders falter, he's got the late look, but I'd rather keep the money where the map is cleaner.
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1250m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, so positioning is everything
Punty read: This is a race where the front-runner quality usually wins, even if they are doing it at a gentle jog early. Klocke (No.7) has the speed to be involved without needing to sprint for 600m, and she looks made to corner into the straight and keep rolling. Iminastate (No.5) can sneak into the quinella spots, but Klocke is the one who turns the race into a one-horse job.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Klocke (No.7) — $1.62 / $1.12 🏆 2ND
Bet $13.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 61.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.18x
Why Slow pace makes it hard to run anyone down from too far back, and she gets the perfect chance to control.
2. Iminastate (No.5) — $7.50 / $2.40 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.71x
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Gridlock (No.4) — $10.00 / $2.75 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.56x
Why Could run a cheeky race, but I'm not convinced she's winning this one.
Roughie: Air Of Solace (No.2) — $14.50 / $2.65 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.3% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.99x
Why She needs luck and a miracle run, and I don't want my bet relying on both.
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1250m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, so the on-pacers who get a spot have the edge
Punty read: Party Rebel (No.4) is the obvious "turn up, sit on them, and win" type. With slow pace, it's usually not enough to just be near the front, you need to be on the right side of the pack when the kick comes. Koibito (No.2) is the danger for exacta and trifecta types, because her profile screams "stroll into a run" and then suddenly you're watching her late. Still, I'm putting the win faith on Party Rebel to make it a contest.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Party Rebel (No.4) — $3.50 / $1.60 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$37.50
Prob 33.1% | Place: 65.7% | Value: 1.25x
Why Maps on the speed, and slow races punish those who chase from too far back.
2. Koibito (No.2) — $2.85 / $1.40 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 30.1% | Place: 56.8% | Value: 0.82x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Esnaad (No.6) — $5.70 / $2.50 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 28.8% | Value: 0.93x
Why Has a shot to hit the board, but this is Party Rebel's race to own.
Roughie: Enchantic (No.5) — $14.00 / $3.90 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.6% | Place: 13.9% | Value: 0.84x
Why Needs a big late run and a messy tempo, roughie-style.
Race type: Benchmark 64, 2300m
Map & tempo: Slow, grindy tempo, so staying power and angles decide it
Punty read: This is where you watch the field bunch up and then spring apart like a sitcom cast getting stressed. Joika (No.7) is the one I want in the mix because her profile screams "run on, keep going". Spenzalot (No.2) is the value flirt, Powerful Prayer (No.9) is the staying danger if she gets room. But for the bet type today, I'm happy to put the faith in Joika for the win.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Joika (No.7) — $3.10 / $1.52 🏆 2ND
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 25.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.86x
Why Slow tempo suits, and she's got the running to stay involved when others fade.
2. Spenzalot (No.2) — $4.20 / $1.75 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.1% | Place: 64.5% | Value: 1.20x
Why A real chance — but at $1.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Powerful Prayer (No.9) — $7.00 / $2.30 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.27x
Why Staying type with a genuine path to a forward finish if the race splits late.
Roughie: Mr Fabulous (No.5) — $10.50 / $2.75 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.7% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 0.87x
Why If it turns into a sprint from the back half, he's got the whack, otherwise he's just working.
Race type: Benchmark 64, 900m
Map & tempo: Hot pace, so chaos is rewarded if you're positioned early
Punty read: Over 900m, the leaders are usually not stopped by wishful thinking. Just Awesome (No.2) looks like she's got the speed and clean trajectory to hold her ground and still have plenty left. Princess Cruizer (No.4) is the obvious second threat because she's the sort who can land in the race and keep coming. Gunroom (No.1) is dangerous if the race stays lively, but I'm not overcomplicating it.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Just Awesome (No.2) — $3.00 / $1.45 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$21.00
Prob 26.0% | Place: 66.2% | Value: 0.91x
Why Hot tempo suits a horse who can hold a position, and she looks ready to take control early.
2. Princess Cruizer (No.4) — $5.00 / $1.90 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.7% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.19x
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Gunroom (No.1) — $5.50 / $1.90 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 60.2% | Value: 1.00x
Why Has the form to be around the money, but value is sitting elsewhere.
Roughie: Donwon (No.3) — $10.00 / $2.90 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.5% | Place: 26.8% | Value: 1.05x
Why Wide-path miracles and fast finishes win roughies, but I'm not paying twice today.
Race type: Benchmark 68, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, so the mid-runners need a plan, not a prayer
Punty read: Silencio Porfavor (No.4) is the one I like because her whole profile suits a race with real speed. When the race genuinely flows, horses that can sit and then kick get rewarded, and she's built for that. Oakfield Utah (No.2) is right there as well, but Silencio Porfavor just looks like she can be in the right spot without needing everything to go right.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Silencio Porfavor (No.4) — $4.40 / $1.85 🏆 3RD
Bet $13.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 28.0% | Place: 60.2% | Value: 1.19x
Why Real pace on, and she's set to stalk and pounce rather than get stuck doing it tough.
2. Oakfield Utah (No.2) — $4.60 / $1.90 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.9% | Place: 65.4% | Value: 0.89x
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Miles Of Glory (No.5) — $6.60 / $2.10 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.2% | Place: 44.5% | Value: 0.97x
Why Needs everything to line up and she might be a touch short on the win angle.
Roughie: Bondi Blossom (No.6) — $10.00 / $2.80 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.2% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 1.00x
Why Could run on for a bit, but winning requires the right sort of run, not just hard effort.
Race type: Benchmark 64 Handicap, 1250m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, but it's an open contest and anything can get a run
Punty read: This is chaos handicap territory, where a horse with the right position can absolutely make a mockery of the early prices. Crash Bang Wallop (No.12) is my "if it all clicks" selection, with Tannin (No.10) and Herman Said (No.3) both capable of showing up late. But because everything here is wide-open, I'm not smashing my wallet into it. I'll watch for the first 300m, if the leaders collapse, that's when No.12 and No.8 start getting filthy late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Crash Bang Wallop (No.12) — $11.00 / $3.50 🏆 10TH
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 15.4% | Place: 32.8% | Value: 1.56x
Why Needs a smoother run into the straight and a pace collapse, then the late burst lands.
2. Tannin (No.10) — $5.70 / $2.15 🏆 8TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.7% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.81x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Herman Said (No.3) — $9.00 / $2.90 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 1.07x
Why Can place with the right trip, but winning needs a bit of class plus a clean lane.
Roughie: Beaumista (No.8) — $12.00 / $3.80 🏆 9TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.9% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.05x
Why If she finds a rail-friendly run and the front half softens, she can snag one of the bigger checks.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 7,2,9,5 / 2,1,4,3 / 2,4,5,6 / 10,12,3,8 (256 combos x $0.14 = $35.84) -- 14% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Excelluna (Race 1, No.8)✓ Won — $2.20
2 - Klocke (Race 2, No.7)✗ — $1.47
3 - Party Rebel (Race 3, No.4)✓ Won — $2.74
Meeting Stats
Selections
Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Newcastle on a Good 4 with a rail that's actually doing its job, plus a tailwind up the straight, so the finish line's got that kick-the-door-open vibe. Expect on-pacers to get first dibs, but if something's got that clean, hungry last 200m, it'll absolutely steal metres. It's a sunny day, no muck around, just pure racecraft and horses doing what they do.
Tonight my spine is three races where the early speed and market intent look aligned: Race 1 Excelluna, Race 2 Klocke, Race 3 Party Rebel. After that, it's survival, like the episode where the nice bloke gets eliminated first. I'll point you to the spots where value is actually sneaking in, and the spots where the field is set up to go a bit feral.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Newcastle, 900-1300m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play Fair-to-Fast, on-pace gets every chance)
Weather: Sunny, 24°C, gusts 35km/h NW (watch for a fast straight and closers getting a sniff)
Early lane guess: Tight-ish early, but tailwind helps anything making a move late
Tempo profile: Generally genuine pace, so if you're too far back you need the whole motorway
Jockeys to follow:
Grant Buckley: good hands for getting horses to the right spot, especially when the race is warming up late
Mitchell Bell: loves a tactical steer, and when there's speed on, he knows where to sit and pounce
Lee Magorrian: can make a big difference in maiden races when horses finally switch on
Stables to respect:
Michael Freedman (4 runners): consistently in the mix when the form is trending up and the distances suit
Richard & Will Freedman (4 runners): they've got a knack for landing in maidens and lifting when the market wakes up
S I Singleton (2 runners): midfield to forward, their stayers and Bm types often run better than their price suggests
Punty's take:
Newcastle today is basically a sprint race meeting wearing a trench coat. Distances are short enough that the barrier matters, but the tailwind up the straight means if you're on your bike at the right time, you're getting home. Rail's True, so straight-line heroes get rewarded, and wide, wandering trips can punish you.
Race 1 is a genuine pace affair over 900m, so I'm backing the horse that looks like she can sit where she needs to and do her dash. Excelluna (No.8) is the market's main character, and with her blinkers going on, she looks made for this exact setup. Stromatolite (No.6) is the sort of thing that can fluke a win on confidence, but for me it's Excelluna's race to lose.
Then Race 2 is a slow tempo maiden where one horse has the class and speed to control the whole vibe. Klocke (No.7) maps perfectly for this, and even if she does it easy, the place value is still there for the punters who like safety with a grin.
After that, Race 3 sets up as another "who's brave enough to be on the speed" maiden, and Party Rebel (No.4) is the type to turn it into a contest rather than a lottery.
What it means for you:
I'd be aggressive early and keep it simple. That Big 3 spine is where I'd put the bulk of the attention, because each of those races has a pace story and a market story that actually line up. No mucking around backing five-longshots to win if the track is rewarding position and timing.
For the rest, this is where you either protect your bankroll like a bogan with a freshly earned pay packet, or you go wide in the sequences for entertainment. The Quaddie lane is built with one eye on chaos and one eye on keeping the legs sensible. The open legs decide everything, so if you're playing, you're playing the whole card, not "one race and a hope".
If you want value, take it when it's supported by the tactical read, not when it's just expensive. If the market's screaming a horse short, it usually means there's something they can see that you can also feel when you watch the speedmap shape.
