Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden Hcp, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, Lottery Link and Dual Mastery sit right where the finish needs them
Punty read: This is a long 1600 where the Soft 5 punishes slowness but rewards those who can still keep rolling. Zweigelt at barrier 4 gives you a perfect stalking option in a slow tempo race. Indamouse is the grinder type, can sit closer and run on. Phoenix Legend looks like the kind of horse that'll get traffic, then slice out of it when the straight hits. Lottery Link is drifting, so if you're brave, this is the "slow pace, then someone has a gear" trap door.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Zweigelt (No.1) — $2.54 / $1.32 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$20.02
Prob 29.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.26x
Why Barrier 4 in a slow tempo, Soft 5 running on suits, and Jett Newman knows how to place a horse for the sprint home.
2. Indamouse (No.2) — $4.65 / $1.72 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.37x
Why A real chance — but at $1.72 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Phoenix Legend (No.5) — $8.50 / $2.55 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.63x
Why This is the Soft 5 finisher, and with a slow tempo she's the one that can still be moving when others stop thinking.
Roughie: Lottery Link (No.3) — $11.75 / $2.85 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.8% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 0.41x
Why Roughie path is real if the speed falls apart, but the odds aren't offering a win ticket, so I'm leaving the dream to the quinella hunters.
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Hot pace, Metric is the pick with momentum while others chase the leaders
Punty read: This is one of those 1200s where the leaders can set the table, and the best-run horse just needs to be there for when the room appears. Metric is the clear map and class fit for the sprint grind. Imminent Appeal and Veomas look like they can run into the money, but the risk is the pace is genuinely hot, so you need a horse that can hold rhythm, not just chase speed.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Metric (No.15) — $2.40 / $1.35 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$21.00
Prob 41.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.30x
Why She's got the best speed profile for a fast 1200 and the whole race shapes like she'll be close enough to do damage.
2. Imminent Appeal (No.3) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 59.3% | Value: 0.89x
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Veomas (No.8) — $6.50 / $2.20 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.7% | Place: 59.6% | Value: 0.89x
Why Soft track and a run style that can keep grinding, plus she's the kind that can keep finding under pressure.
Roughie: Reconciliate (No.10) — $10.75 / $2.85 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.9% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 0.97x
Why Roughie only works if the race opens up from the hot pace, and I want the money on the cleaner plays.
Race type: Open Hcp, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Caspernova and Razors get the right stalking lanes
Punty read: This is a middle ground speed race, which means you can't just be behind forever. Biancelli is short enough to be dangerous, but I like Caspernova's ability to keep showing up, especially if they go a bit too steady early. Razors looks like the type that'll be finishing hard with cover, and Bunker Hut is capable of taking up a spot and holding it longer than people expect.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Caspernova (No.2) — $4.60 / $1.65 🏆 2ND
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P) — Cashed, net -$1.84
Prob 27.4% | Place: 68.8% | Value: 1.32x
Why Soft 5 suits his grind style, and he's been getting into the fight with the right cover.
2. Biancelli (No.8) — $2.62 / $1.30 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.74x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Razors (No.6) — $7.05 / $1.90 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.2% | Place: 45.7% | Value: 1.41x
Why He's got the right tempo profile to run on, and if the leaders do the heavy lifting, he eats the late ground.
Roughie: Krakarib (No.3) — $15.00 / $3.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.3% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.61x
Why Roughie only if something goes pear-shaped in traffic, otherwise he's too big to be in my ear at this stage.
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, but the race is still a proper sprint with Soft 5 impacts
Punty read: Graffitude and Stevie's Spirit look like they'll have a say, and the danger is the ones that start too far back and then get stuck in heavy ground. Turbo Cow is a real threat if the pace holds and he gets a clean run at the finish. Summer Sensation can sneak into the frame if the leaders tire and she finds clear air.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Graffitude (No.6) — $5.10 / $2.00 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$61.50
Prob 27.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.18x
Why She maps to be involved early, and with Soft 5 you want the runner that can carry tempo without being welded to the bit.
2. Stevie's Spirit (No.8) — $4.30 / $1.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.32x
Why A real chance — but at $1.80 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Turbo Cow (No.7) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 55.5% | Value: 0.80x
Why If there's a little speed slack late, he's right there to pounce.
Roughie: Budda Bar (No.5) — $9.60 / $3.30 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.1% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 1.18x
Why Roughie is there for the trifecta punters, but my win money stays with the runners that look like they'll actually be travelling.
Race type: Class 3, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Esha takes the race by the scruff and makes them work for it
Punty read: This is a straight 1000 where the Soft 5 isn't slowing the best horses, it's slowing the ones that can't keep their action. Esha is the one that can. Quein Step is the pocket rocket if they get a breather, and Imperial Force is the classic "stays honest, then shows up late" contender. Goldarnie is the outsider flick, but he needs something major to go right.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Esha (No.6) — $1.76 / $1.13 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$11.40
Prob 55.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.00x
Why Speed through the line. She handles Soft 5 action and she should be in the top two turning for home.
2. Quein Step (No.10) — $5.95 / $1.90 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.4% | Place: 56.8% | Value: 1.03x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Imperial Force (No.1) — $7.75 / $2.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.17x
Why If the pace holds and the track plays kinder, he can keep grinding into the money.
Roughie: Goldarnie (No.9) — $13.25 / $3.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.0% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.91x
Why Needs help, needs timing, and on a 1000 that's a lot to ask.
Race type: Benchmark 70, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, and this looks like a "who holds form under pressure" race
Punty read: Russian Ripper is the leader, Kokatahi is the grinder, and Midnight Spirit is the one I want because he's got the best profile to keep kicking without getting bullied by the pace. Tiz Worthy is in the mix if he gets the right trip, and Royal Air Force is your "if he gets room" threat.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)
1. Midnight Spirit (No.1) — $3.95 / $1.52 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 24.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.11x
Why He's already shown he can handle Soft action and he should get the perfect stalking spot in a genuine tempo.
2. Kokatahi (No.7) — $3.90 / $1.52 🏆 2ND
Bet $5.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$2.60
Prob 22.4% | Place: 68.3% | Value: 0.87x
Why If the race gets a bit stretched, he's strong enough to hang around the finish.
3. Russian Ripper (No.10) — $4.25 / $1.55 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.4% | Place: 68.6% | Value: 0.96x
Why Leading type, but I'm happy to let others take the early race gamble while Midnight Spirit takes the win.
Roughie: Mongolian Spring (No.12) — $23.50 / $3.70 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.1% | Place: 12.3% | Value: 0.86x
Why Roughie needs a miracle run and a pace collapse, and that's entertainment money, not my core.
Race type: Benchmark 62, 2412m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, staying power matters, so it's who can make the last surge count
Punty read: Long race, Soft 5, and no one wants to do the hard yards too early. Whatjeudoin' is my pick to make the race look simple late, Cigar Man can keep rolling and Bills Angel is your value roulette. Forty Times and California Grass are the ones that can weave their way into the finish if the leaders get bogged.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.50 pool)
1. Whatjeudoin' (No.5) — $9.50 / $3.30 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $7.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 22.1% | Place: 48.9% | Value: 2.10x
Why Slow tempo suits, and with the staying trip he has time to build momentum and then hit the line properly.
2. Forty Times (No.7) — $8.50 / $2.75 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 12.9% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 0.98x
Why He can go close if the race falls apart, but I'm not forcing a win bet.
3. Cigar Man (No.1) — $11.25 / $3.30 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.3% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.62x
Why If he gets a patient trip and avoids spending energy early, he'll be right there late.
Roughie: Bills Angel (No.14) — $11.25 / $3.30 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 1.50x
Why Roughie can absolutely land a blow if the tempo stays slow, but I want Whatjeudoin' leading the charge.
Race type: Class 1, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and it's all about who can start, travel, then sprint out clean
Punty read: Olivoni is the anchor for a reason. Vanessi is the danger with the chance to get forward and force the issue, while Life After Love is the pocket pick for the late dash. Ciphertext is the sort of horse that can pop into the right spot, but on Soft 5, the winners are usually the ones with the best rhythm and straight run.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Olivoni (No.11) — $3.00 / $1.50 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 32.2% | Place: 66.6% | Value: 0.70x
Why Even at short odds, she matches the race shape, and she should be hard to stop rounding the home corner.
2. Vanessi (No.1) — $3.83 / $1.72 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 30.6% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.39x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Life After Love (No.8) — $9.30 / $3.30 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.6% | Place: 19.1% | Value: 1.39x
Why If the leaders do too much, she's the one that can pick up the scraps.
Roughie: Ciphertext (No.6) — $9.50 / $3.20 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 26.8% | Value: 1.30x
Why Roughie needs the pace to set up perfectly, but I'm not paying full freight for that risk.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Eagle Farm on a Soft 5 with the rail jammed out, so expect some messy traffic and a few blokes deep in the red to get paid anyway. It's a day for running on, holding your nerve at the line, and backing the horses that look like they'll be still finishing when everyone else is already filing for unemployment.
We're going to build the day around a clean spine, then let the chaos add the colour. My Big 3 is three winners types, with the prices that make sense, and the sort of profiles Soft 5 actually rewards. After that, it's race-by-race with a roughie in each, because pretending we're saints is for people who don't bet.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Eagle Farm, 1000m to 2412m card
Rail: +2.5m Entire
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play Speed vs Stamina, with closers boosted)
Weather: Sunny, 23°C, watch for Moderate NNE wind, tailwind up the straight
Early lane guess: Sighting a speed bias early, but the straight will let the "still got a gear" brigade arrive late
Tempo profile: Mixed, with a couple of races that look like proper sprint affairs and a few where the field strings out
Jockeys to follow:
Jett Newman: Versatile on sprint tempo, and he's often the one saving the last dash in the wet
Mark Du Plessis: Tactical type who'll slot in, then pounce when everyone else is still thinking
Siena Grima: When she lands on the right timing, she turns "maybe" into "yes"
Stables to respect:
R L Heathcote (8 runners): Keeps bringing maiden types to the party like they're already winners
T J Gollan (10 runners): Soft track specialists, if they're in the race they usually mean business
Chris & Corey Munce (6 runners): They know how to place a horse for the exact moment it matters
Punty's take:
Eagle Farm Soft 5 with the rail out at +2.5m usually means two things. One, you want horses that can keep giving in the final 200. Two, the outside and mid pack are alive, because the track doesn't reward locking in behind dead space. The NNE wind helping closers on the straight is a sneaky little cheat code for anything that can travel, and then stretch.
Now, don't get hypnotised by the short prices on the day. Soft 5 is where you see big efforts from horses you thought were "just there". You'll notice the market drifters start talking late, especially when a horse gets out to where it can actually run. So I'm backing the market when it makes sense, and I'm fighting it when it doesn't, like a ratbag with a keyboard.
If you're chasing a simple plan, it's this. In the early races, I like the ones mapping to be involved from the get-go. In the middle races, I want the ones with clean timing and a soft track suit. And in the last couple, I'm leaning into the "they'll still be powering" types, because the straight at Eagle Farm is where dreams go to collect their money.
What it means for you:
For your bet slip, be aggressive where the race shape is clear. That's where the top runners aren't just favourites, they're the right kind of runners for Soft 5 and this rail. Race 2 and Race 5 are where the day's spine starts making sense, and Race 8 is the capstone.
Then, protect your ticket with place leverage or a classy each way angle where it's flagged. But don't go full conservative, because Eagle Farm on Soft 5 hands out chaos like it's free samples at a servo. Use the lanes for coverage fun, and use the Big 3 Multi if you've got the balls, because that's the cleanest three-race combo that fits the track expectations.
Bet smart, but also bet like you actually watch races. If a horse looks like it's going to run on, you back it. If it looks like it'll get stuck and plug, you leave it to the "I'll just watch" crew.
