Rightio Ratbags, Cranbourne on a Soft 6 with 6mm in the last 24 hours and the rail out 9m, and the card is a bit of a grab bag. Eight races, 89 runners, and the only real anchor is a short-priced maiden that's been firming all morning. Grab a coffee, because this one rewards the punters who actually read the form.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Cranbourne, 955m to 1600m card
Rail: Out 9m Entire Circuit
Official going: Soft 6 (6mm last 24 hours, 25mm last 7 days)
Weather: Overcast, gusts 35.2km/h
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Moderate in R1 and R8, slow in R2, R3 and R4, genuine in R5 and R7, and hot in R6 where five runners map to lead.
Jockeys to follow:
Jye McNeil: 6 rides today, including Sondera in Race 1 where his J@trk strike rate sits at 11.2% (1067/9486).
Daniel Stackhouse: 7 rides, the most on the card, with Parera the roughie in Race 1 and Gangland in the Race 2 mix.
Michael Dee: 4 rides, and he's on Pocket Watch in Race 2, a runner whose jockey-trainer combo with G M Begg has won 16.4% (33/201).
Stables to respect:
C I Brown (4 runners): Mykindakandy, Shaime and Discover Lupino give them plenty of chances across the card.
Simon Zahra (4 runners): Toy Maker, Onavuitton and Sinister Sauce are all in the mix, and Onavuitton is the each-way pick in Race 7.
T Busuttin & N Young (4 runners): Smashing Success, Poetic Passage, Sumo Sandy and Mount Sabyinyo give them four shots across the day.

Punty's take: Race 1 is where the pace question starts, because nobody is mapped to lead outright and the likeliest front-runners are Cowboykickedfive from the wide barrier 11, Dempsey from barrier 8 and Parera from barrier 2. That's a meeting-opener where the handy ones should get a nice trip. Race 2 and Race 3 are both slow-paced with the back half getting the nod, and Race 3 is where the chaos starts because Civic Square and Teen Torque both want the lead and Teen Torque is drawn wide at barrier 9. Race 4 is a slow-pace sit-and-sprint race with Rock About drawn wide at barrier 12 and mapped midfield, so it has to come from a bit of a wide trip and still have the gas. Race 5 is genuine pace and Layla is the only leader, meaning she's uncontested unless Illuminance finds the front from barrier 7. Race 6 is the one you'll want to watch closely because five runners map to lead, and the Hot Pace label means somebody is going to have a horrible time up front. Race 7 is a 16-runner Benchmark 66 with Regal Might the only leader and the rest of the bunch sitting in the middle, which is exactly why Onavuitton is the each-way pick despite the shape being against it. Race 8 is moderate pace with two leaders in Hedjet and Finance Shogun, and the shape favours the one who settles just behind them.

What it means for you: Race 1 is the banker of the day, but the price is short, so keep Sondera as a single win bet and don't get greedy. Races 2, 3, 4 and 7 are the ones where the value sits, with Pocket Watch, Teen Torque, Rock About and Onavuitton all carrying the bet lines. Race 3 and Race 7 are the chaos races where the Each Way structure is doing the work, because the place price is what pays the rent. Race 6 is where the real risk sits, and the Mainmankash bet is only as good as the pace battle up front. Keep the big spend for the banker races and let the chaos races pay off with the each-way and the roughies.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Marsept (Race 5, No.2) — $2.34
Why The strongest win chance on the card at 45.2% and the only horse in Race 5 that's a legitimate banker. Fastest time on the sectional line and two of his last three starts were placed, so the trip suits him.
2 - Sondera (Race 1, No.11) — $2.50
Why Shape helps the back-runner and the market has been backing him in, firming from $2.75 to $2.50. Not a fat price, but the cleanest win line in the opener.
3 - Teen Torque (Race 3, No.10) — $5.00
Why The shape is against him, but a 21.5% win chance at $5.00 and a 58.9% place chance keep him in the multi, and his last start was a 3rd at Kyneton.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × 29.25 = $292.50

Race 1 – The Valley

Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace on paper, but nobody is mapped to lead outright. Cowboykickedfive from barrier 11, Dempsey from barrier 8 and Parera from barrier 2 are the likeliest to find the front, and Cowboykickedfive has to work to cross. That gives the ones sitting handy a sweet run. Sondera settles back from barrier 3 and the shape helps him, while Fram Strait and Smashing Success are the ones the pace works against.
Punty read: Sondera is the bet, $13 win and nothing else. He's had three starts with one second at Kyneton 1479m last time out, the market has been firming, and the expected pace helps a back-marker. Quemax at $2.94 is the danger, and he's got the form to run into a place. Propellant has no mapped position so I'm not claiming one, and Parera is the roughie that actually has the form to make a noise at $9.00.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Sondera (No.11) — $2.50 / $1.25
Bet $13.00 Win, return $32.50
Prob 33.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why The one I want. Shape helps him, the market has him firming, and he's the cleanest maiden on the card. Keep it to the win bet.
2. Quemax (No.5) — $2.94 / $1.32
Bet Tracked
Prob 26.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.32 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Propellant (No.8) — $8.40 / $2.45
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why No mapped position so I can't claim how he runs, and the cross-over nose band is on for the first time. Worth a look, not a bet.

Roughie: Parera (No.4) — $9.50 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why Pace advantaged in a moderate race and his Mornington 4th came when held up, so there's a path if the leaders go too hard and Sondera doesn't do it.

Race 2 – Ladbrokes More On Tote Win Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace and nobody is mapped to lead outright. Gangland from barrier 10 is the likeliest to find the front but he's drawn wide, so he has to work for it. Native Spirit is the one the shape favours, drawn barrier 8 and mapped midfield, and Engulf from barrier 9 needs the pace to be kind to find the cover.
Punty read: Pocket Watch is the bet at $11 win. He has no career starts on the record, so I won't pretend I know his settling position, but Michael Dee and G M Begg have clicked at 16.4% and the price sits at $3.20. Engulf is the danger at $5.00 with a place chance of 46.1%, and Gangland has blinkers on for the first time from a wide draw.

Top 3 + Roughie ($11.00 pool)

1. Pocket Watch (No.5) — $3.20 / $1.50
Bet $11.00 Win, return $35.20
Prob 20.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.64x Steady since tip
Why The strongest win chance in the race and the jockey-trainer combo is the best line I've got on him. Bet the win and let him do the rest.
2. Engulf (No.10) — $5.00 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.94x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.80 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Gangland (No.3) — $4.80 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 44.9% | Value: 0.62x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers on for the first time and his last start was an interference-hit 6th at Ballarat Synthetic. Dangerous from the wide draw.

Roughie: Fanfire (No.6) — $13.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.10x Steady since tip
Why The market has come in from $17.00 to $13.00 with heavy support, and his last start was a 7th at Yarra Glen 1009m that was held up. A slow race gives him a chance to sit midfield and run on.

Race 3 – RSL Poppy Appeal Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace and the back half is helped most. Civic Square from barrier 7 and Teen Torque from barrier 9 are the likeliest to find the front, and Teen Torque is drawn wide so he has to work to cross. Activating from barrier 8 is the one the shape suits, mapped midfield, and Teen Torque is the one the shape works against.
Punty read: Teen Torque each way at $13.00, and the win and place split is what pays. His last start was a 3rd at Kyneton 1479m, he's had a 4th at Pakenham Synthetic, and the market price of $5.00 is generous for a 21.5% chance. Blue And Gold and Civic Square are the dangers, with Blue And Gold's time sectional line worth a close look.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Teen Torque (No.10) — $5.00 / $1.90
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $44.85 if it wins ($32.50 win + $12.35 place), $12.35 if it only places
Prob 21.5% | Place: 59.1% | Value: 1.07x Steady since tip
Why The shape is against him, but he's drawn wide and still has the place chance. Last start was a 3rd at Kyneton and the cross-over nose band goes on for the first time. Each way is the right play.
2. Blue And Gold (No.4) — $4.40 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.9% | Place: 50.9% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Civic Square (No.5) — $4.60 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.82x Steady since tip
Why Mapped on the speed and one of the likeliest to find the front. His 2nd at Cranbourne Training is the best of his recent form.

Roughie: Poetic Passage (No.6) — $11.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers and tongue tie both on for the first time. If the front pair go too hard in a slow race it can come home, but it needs the race to fall apart.

Race 4 – McMahon's Dairy Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with the back half helped. Seinfeld from barrier 6 and Gypsy Moon from barrier 7 are the likeliest to find the front, and the wide draws in the back half (Community Gaz from 11, Rock About from 12, Trentino from 10 and Upcoming from 13) all need cover or luck. Rock About is mapped midfield and the shape helps him, which is the main reason he's the pick.
Punty read: Rock About at $13.00 win is the bet. He's had a 3rd at Seymour 1200m last time out, he's shown the time sectional line is the fastest in the race, and the market has come in from $4.50 to $3.50 with heavy support. Seinfeld is the danger, placed in the excuses and with a nose roll on for the first time, and La Velocita has three straight thirds at the Yarra Glen and Cranbourne tracks.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Rock About (No.3) — $3.50 / $1.62
Bet $13.00 Win, return $45.50
Prob 20.8% | Place: 52.8% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why The shape helps him and he's drawn wide but the market is backing him. He's a placed horse and the trip suits his style.
2. Seinfeld (No.5) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.2% | Place: 53.5% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. La Velocita (No.10) — $5.70 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.87x Steady since tip
Why Three straight thirds and 3kg up from last start. Good place value but no saver on the place price.

Roughie: Trentino (No.7) — $13.00 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.07x Steady since tip
Why Third at Mornington 1500m last time, and his slow start at Sale was the excuse. A slow race gives a midfield runner a clean run through the middle.

Race 5 – Charter Keck Cramer Hcp (66)

Race type: Restricted 66, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace and Layla is the only leader from barrier 9, with Illuminance from barrier 7 the nearest pressure. Marsept from barrier 6 sits midfield and the shape helps him slightly. Sayalero and O'mosa from the back are the ones that need the front pair to come back to them, and Claymore Mine is hurt most by the expected pace.
Punty read: Marsept is the bet at $15.00 win and the rest is noise. He's a 45.2% chance at $2.34, his Flemington 2nd and Geelong win are the form, and the market prices him right where I think he should be. Layla at $2.50 is a leader who gets an uncontested trip but her last start was a slow-start 14th at Flemington. Redders is the danger from the midfield, and Illuminance is the roughie that could make it a race.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Marsept (No.2) — $2.34 / $1.12
Bet $15.00 Win, return $35.10
Prob 45.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.06x Steady since tip
Why The strongest chance on the card and a 1-2-1 record from six starts. He's 4kg up from last start but best at lighter weights, and the trip suits his midfield run.
2. Layla (No.6) — $2.50 / $1.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.9% | Place: 53.9% | Value: 0.40x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Redders (No.1) — $8.00 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.04x Steady since tip
Why Career 2-3-1 from 12, and his last start was an 8th at Sandown-Lakeside with a medical or physical issue listed. Worth a watch from barrier 1.

Roughie: Illuminance (No.5) — $12.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why Track record of 1-8-1 from 12 starts at Cranbourne and the blinkers are back on. Market has drifted from $10.00 to $12.00 and the front pressure could force Layla to work.

Race 6 – Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge (Bm70)

Race type: Benchmark 70, 955m
Map & tempo: Hot pace with five runners mapped to lead: Mainmankash from barrier 2, Room For Bingo from barrier 3, Speir from barrier 6, Weapon Clear from barrier 8 and Midnight Devil from barrier 10. The shape helps Mainmankash, Magnabelle Royale and Room For Bingo, and it hurts Weapon Clear and Midnight Devil. Mainmankash is the one who should be able to settle in front and the shape is with him.
Punty read: Mainmankash at $12.00 win is the bet. He's had 4-2-1 from nine starts and his Dist 5:3-0-0 record reads well for a 955m. The hot pace suits his front-running. Magnabelle Royale is the danger at $4.20 with a 1st-up record of 3:3-0-0, and Speir from barrier 6 is the other one to keep an eye on. Weapon Clear is the roughie that has to hope the pace collapses up front.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)

1. Mainmankash (No.1) — $2.54 / $1.25
Bet $12.00 Win, return $30.48
Prob 21.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.54x Steady since tip
Why The shape favours him and his Dist 5:3-0-0 record is the strongest line on the card at this trip. Last start was a 7th at Caulfield Heath with slow start and interference, so the excuse is on record.
2. Magnabelle Royale (No.6) — $4.20 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.1% | Place: 39.6% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Speir (No.2) — $5.20 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Dist 9:4-1-0 and a 2nd at Cranbourne 955m last time out. Dangerous from barrier 6 if he can cross the pace.

Roughie: Weapon Clear (No.5) — $9.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.87x Steady since tip
Why The shape is against him, but his 1st-up record is 4:2-0-0 and he won at Bendigo 1000m last start before the medical issue at Cranbourne. If the pace blows up at the front, he's the one who can pick them off.

Race 7 – Chef's Hat (Bm66)

Race type: Benchmark 66, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Regal Might the only leader from barrier 2, and the rest of the field sitting in the middle. Couldthisbetheone and Sumo Sandy from barrier 12 are the others close to the lead, and Sumo Sandy has to work to cross. The shape helps most of the midfield runners, including Zourain, Shaime, Untapped and Waco Kid, but it's against Onavuitton from barrier 6 and Sumo Sandy.
Punty read: Onavuitton each way at $5.70 is the bet. The shape is against him, so the case rests on the place. He ran 4th at Cranbourne 1200m last time out, a step up on his Flemington 10th, and his Good record is 8:1-0-1. Lyrics 'n' Song at $6.40 and Buzitup at $11.00 are the dangers, with Buzitup drifting out from $8.50.

Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)

1. Onavuitton (No.7) — $5.70 / $2.15
Bet $8.50 Each Way ($4.25W + $4.25P), collects $33.37 if it wins ($24.23 win + $9.14 place), $9.14 if it only places
Prob 15.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.87x Steady since tip
Why The shape is against him but the last start was a 4th at Cranbourne 1200m against a strong field, and his Good record reads 8:1-0-1. Each way covers the chaos.
2. Lyrics 'n' Song (No.11) — $6.40 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.60x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Buzitup (No.6) — $12.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.9% | Place: 24.2% | Value: 1.07x Steady since tip
Why Warrnambool 1st last start and the drift from $8.50 to $11.00 is the only reason to question him. Track record of 3-3-0 from 13 is solid.

Roughie: Zourain (No.1) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.7% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.63x Steady since tip
Why Two wins in his last three starts including Pakenham 1400m last time out. He's 2kg up but best at lighter weights, and the midfield trip suits him in a genuine pace.

Race 8 – Drummond Golf Hcp (66)

Race type: Restricted 66, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with two leaders. Finance Shogun from barrier 4 and Hedjet from barrier 3 both want the front, so Hedjet has the inside to fight for it. Mount Sabyinyo from barrier 10 is drawn wide and has to work to cross, while Rogan and Ashau Valley need cover from the back. The shape favours Hedjet and the handy runners behind the leaders.
Punty read: Hedjet at $3.00 win is the bet. The shape is with him and his record of 1-2-0 from five starts with a 2nd-up of 2:1-1-0 is solid. Power And The Beat at $4.40 is the danger, with a place chance of 56.0% and the nose roll off for the first time, and Mount Sabyinyo from a wide draw needs the race to be on its best behaviour.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Hedjet (No.8) — $3.00 / $1.45
Bet $10.50 Win, return $31.50
Prob 21.1% | Place: 60.6% | Value: 0.63x Steady since tip
Why Shape helps and the inside draw gives him a chance to take the lead. Last start was a 4th at Sale 1400m, and his 2nd-up 2:1-1-0 record is the best line on the card.
2. Power And The Beat (No.4) — $4.50 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.94x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Mount Sabyinyo (No.1) — $4.60 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why Second at Sale 1600m last start, but drawn wide at barrier 10 and his weight record of 2/3 at 58kg is a warning sign.

Roughie: Sinister Sauce (No.9) — $13.00 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.4% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why Kilmore 1457m win last start and 5kg down from last start, which is a useful lift. Mapped on the speed in a moderate pace, he can slot into the trail behind the leaders.

SEQUENCE LANES

EARLY QUADDIE (R1–R4)

Smart: 11,5,8 / 5,10,3,6 / 10,4,5,6 / 5,3,10,7 (192 combos x $0.33854 = $65.00) -- 33.9% flexi
Punty's take: Sondera keeps R1 tight, but R2 and R3 are wide open and R4 has three runners worth a look, so the ticket is a chaos play. Minimum flexi is 30%, so this one is a solid spread. Short-priced winners rarely pay the quaddie, so the real money comes from R2 or R3 landing a bigger price.

QUADDIE (R5–R8)

Smart: 2,6,1 / 1,2,6,5 / 11,7,1,6 / 8,1,4 (144 combos x $0.3472 = $50.00) -- 34.7% flexi
Punty's take: Marsept keeps R5 tight but R6 and R7 are open, and Hedjet in R8 is the one leg that could be tight. Minimum flexi is 30%, and the 33.9% is a sensible spread for a card with two chaos races in it.

BIG 6 (R3–R8)

Smart: 10,4,5,6 / 5,3,10,7 / 2,6,1,5 / 1,2,6,5 / 11,7,1,6 / 8,1,4,9 (4096 combos x $0.00122 = $5.00) -- 0.12% flexi
Punty's take: This is an entertainment-only ticket, honestly. Six open legs at 4096 combos give a tiny flexi and a long shot payout, so it's a $5 flutter for the fun of it, not a serious play.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Blinkers go on first time for Gangland
He's been racing at Ballarat Synthetic with interference in the last start, and the blinkers are on for the first time in Race 2. Watch the market for the first-timers in the gear.

2 - Rock About's market is heavy
The price has come in from $4.50 to $3.50 with heavy support, and the trip from barrier 12 is the thing to watch in the market.

3 - Five runners want the lead in Race 6
It's a 955m hot pace with Mainmankash, Room For Bingo, Speir, Weapon Clear and Midnight Devil all mapped to lead. That's the Hunger Games with blinkers on, and somebody is going home bruised.

FINAL WORD FROM THE RATBAG REPORT

Sondera is the cleanest bet on the card and the rest are a chaos buffet, so enjoy the ride and keep the stakes honest. Mind the spread and let the each-way do the heavy lifting in the chaos races.
