Rightio Degenerates, Albury is sitting on a Soft 5 after 8mm in the last 24 hours and 17mm over the week, so the ground has plenty of give in it and the track is no place for the flashy first-timers. Eight races, a slow-leaning card, and only Race 2, Race 7 and Race 8 have prices that have settled enough to bet on yet. Grab a coffee, this one's a grinder.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Albury, 900m to 1600m card
Rail: +3m 1000m - 400m, True Remainder
Official going: Soft 5 (8mm last 24hrs, 17mm last 7 days)
Weather: Fine, gusts 20.4km/h
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Mostly Slow and Moderate pace on the maps. Race 5 has two leaders fighting for the front, Race 6 is the only Genuine pace race and it has a lone leader, and most of the rest will be a jog until someone asks for a squeeze.
Jockeys to follow:
Blaike Mc Dougall: Seven rides on the card, including Bennelong Time (No.1) in Race 2, Greatham Boy (No.2) in Race 4 and Lord Limerick (No.5) in Race 8. Gets the most rides of anyone at the meeting, so he's the one to watch for traffic.
Brittany Button: Seven rides, with Canny Hell (No.4) in Race 4 and Carlow Rose (No.9) in Race 5 among them. Carlow Rose is one of the two leaders in Race 5, so Brittany's bike is going to be busy early.
Claire Ramsbotham: Six rides, including Pretty Penguin (No.6) in Race 4 and Opetaia (No.6) in Race 5. Pretty Penguin is listed as on the speed in a race where the expected pace hurts him, so she's got work to do.
Stables to respect:
Matthew Kelley (5 runners): Maremoto (No.12) in Race 2 has a trainer record at this track of 11% (94/853) with a 13% last-100 rate, and his five runners include Xceptional Spirit (No.12) in Race 5 and Aristocrat (No.1) in Race 8.
Michael Travers (5 runners): Teresprit, Santolini and Iroquai all trot out in Race 3, and Gold Tracker runs in Race 7. Five runners across the card and they are not all in the one race, so there's a few shots to watch.
C D Widdison (5 runners): Bottas (No.2) in Race 2 is the standout, and the stable also has Fourthtimelucky (No.1) in Race 5 and Deeling Aces (No.11) in Race 7.

Punty's take: Look at the maps first and the story writes itself. Race 1 and Race 2 both have nobody sitting on the lead, so the early speed is a shrug and the horses in the back half are going to need the leaders to come back to them. Race 5 is the one with a proper fight up front, Carlow Rose and Xceptional Spirit both want the lead and nobody else on the map is threatening that, which means the back half of that field has to work hard to get involved. Race 6 is the only genuine pace race on the card, and Night Meeting from barrier 5 is the only horse mapped to lead, so he either gets an uncontested trip or gets run down by the closers. Race 7 is the one with the most meat on the bone, a moderate tempo with plenty of runners that want to be handy, which is exactly why Highly Intrigued from barrier 6 is in the Big 3. Race 8 is the wide open one, eighteen runners and a shape that doesn't suit any of the on-pace runners, so it's a dog's breakfast and I'm not going near it at the top of the market.

What it means for you: Be aggressive in Race 2 and Race 7 where I've got the picks with real support behind them, Bottas and Highly Intrigued both have the form to back up the price. Protect in Race 1, where the Each Way on Lull Us Away is about getting paid for a horse that finishes in the money rather than dreaming of a big hit. Treat Races 3 to 6 as watch-and-wait, the markets aren't up yet and I'm not guessing prices I can't see. Race 8 is chaos, no money there from me, so if you're in it keep it small and sensible.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Bottas (Race 2, No.2) — $2.00
Why Backmarker from barrier 7 with the fastest L600, L400 and time sectionals in that field, and he ran second at Wagga 1600m last start.
2 - Highly Intrigued (Race 7, No.9) — $4.20
Why On the speed from barrier 6 in a race where the shape helps him, and he's won two from seven on soft.
3 - Lull Us Away (Race 1, No.8) — $4.60
Why Midfield from barrier 9 in a race that doesn't suit him, but he's two seconds from seven on soft and ran second at Albury 1500m last start.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × 38.64 = $386.40

Race 1 – Twin City Truck Centre Country Boosted Mdn Hcp

Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on the card, and nobody maps to lead or sit handy, so it's a sprint to see who grabs the front. Distant Stripes from barrier 11 and Bleue Dragon from barrier 10 are the back-half runners that need cover or luck. Lull Us Away is midfield from barrier 9 and the shape is against him, with the expected pace costing him a little (map factor 0.88), so he needs the race to come to him.
Punty read: Lull Us Away is the bet here, each way at $4.60 / $1.85, because the place is where the value sits. He's two seconds from seven on soft, ran second at Albury 1500m only a fortnight back, and the each way pays out even if he doesn't bring it home. Distant Stripes is the danger on the place side, third eight times from 18 starts and never a winner, but his price doesn't call for a bet from me. Mane Angel is the roughie that could pay if the slow tempo turns into a sit-and-sprint race.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Lull Us Away (No.8) — $4.60 / $1.85
Bet $7.50 Each Way ($3.75W + $3.75P), collects $24.19 if it wins ($17.25 win + $6.94 place), $6.94 if it only places
Prob 17.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.81x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 9 in a race where the shape is against him, but he's two seconds from seven on soft and his last start at Albury was a solid second.
2. Distant Stripes (No.7) — $5.50 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Destined To Dream (No.6) — $8.50 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.15x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker from barrier 4 that closes late, with L400 and time sectionals both ranked second, and his slow-start excuses at Wagga and Cootamundra are the kind a bounce-back can erase.
Roughie: Mane Angel (No.9) — $10.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.93x Steady since tip
Why If the speed collapses and the pace stays slow, the backmarker from barrier 1 has the fastest L400 in the field and the Map factor sits in his favour, so he can swoop late.

Race 2 – Johnsons MME Plate (C1)

Race type: Class 1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow pace again and nobody maps to lead or sit handy, so the front is up for grabs. Sampson from barrier 10, Acrojack from barrier 11 and Wild Oaks from barrier 12 are the back-half runners that need a clear run, and Bottas is the backmarker from barrier 7 who needs the race to turn into a sprint home. Bennelong Time and Maremoto are both midfield in a race where the expected pace hurts them, so they can't afford to be slow out of the gate.
Punty read: Bottas is the bet, $10.50 to win, because he's the best finisher on the card and the price, although short, is the one I'm happy to take. He's a backmarker and the shape is against him, but the sectionals say he's the fastest finisher in the field and he was second at Wagga 1600m last start. Maremoto is the danger on the place side, placed in each of his last three starts, and he's not a bet at his price. Rivazza is the roughie, midfield from barrier 4, and if the pace stalls he could sneak into the frame.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Bottas (No.2) — $2.00 / $1.15
Bet $10.50 Win, return $21.00
Prob 29.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.59x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker from barrier 7 in a race where the shape works against him, but the sectionals say he's the fastest finisher in the field and he ran second at Wagga 1600m last start.
2. Maremoto (No.12) — $6.00 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.9% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.19x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.95 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Bennelong Time (No.1) — $5.50 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 1 and he won at Albury 1500m last start, which is a strong piece of form, but the price on the place side isn't enough for me.
Roughie: Rivazza (No.8) — $9.00 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 4 with a Wodonga 1590m second last start, and if the front-runners stall he could sneak into the frame.

Race 3 – Wello's Plumbing Country Boosted (Bm58)

Race type: Benchmark 58, 1175m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, with Wild Annie from barrier 1 and Apple Cider from barrier 6 the likeliest to find the front. Reds City from barrier 8 is the one in a field where the expected pace hurts him, and Seaton Moon from barrier 10 is wide and needs cover.
Punty read: Market's not up for this one yet, so my tips land closer to the jump.

Race 4 – Twilight Hcp

Race type: Open, 1175m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, and Greatham Boy from barrier 2, Future Fund from barrier 4, Canny Hell from barrier 8 and Pretty Penguin from barrier 10 are the likeliest to fight for the front. Canny Hell and Pretty Penguin are both drawn wide and have to work to cross, so the pace fight could cost them ground.
Punty read: Market's not up for this one yet, so my tips land closer to the jump.

Race 5 – Baxters Concrete (Bm58)

Race type: Benchmark 58, 900m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with two leaders, Carlow Rose from barrier 9 and Xceptional Spirit from barrier 14, so the front isn't going to be uncontested. Xceptional Spirit has to work from the outside to get there, which means the trail can be found by the closers in behind them.
Punty read: Market's not up for this one yet, so my tips land closer to the jump.

Race 6 – Hutchinson Civil Super Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1175m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Night Meeting from barrier 5 the only horse mapped to lead, so he gets an uncontested trip unless the pressure comes from Snakeunderfoot from barrier 4 or Magic Royale from barrier 3. Samaka from barrier 17 is wide and has to work to cross, and the expected pace hurts several of the midfield runners.
Punty read: Market's not up for this one yet, so my tips land closer to the jump.

Race 7 – MWS Wealth Professionals (Bm66)

Race type: Benchmark 66, 1500m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with no runner mapped to lead, and the likeliest to find the front are Star Blazer from barrier 5, Hip Hip Ole from barrier 4, Highly Intrigued from barrier 6 and Doc March from barrier 7. Our Huntress from barrier 13 is wide and has to work to get across, so the speed is spread out and the shape suits the on-pace runners more than the closers.
Punty read: Highly Intrigued is the bet, $10.50 to win, because the shape helps him from barrier 6 and he's won two from seven on soft. He ran fourth at Bendigo 1600m last start after being held up, and his sectionals rank fastest in L600 and second in L400, so he's the horse that should lead the finish. Hip Hip Ole is the danger, a 1st-up winner profile with two wins at Wagga in his record and a strong place rate, but he's not a bet at the price. Oneforian is the roughie that can run into the frame if the favourite gets tangled.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Highly Intrigued (No.9) — $4.20 / $1.80
Bet $10.50 Win, return $44.10
Prob 21.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.88x Steady since tip
Why On the speed from barrier 6 in a race where the shape helps him, two wins from seven on soft, and he's the fastest L600 sectional in the field.
2. Hip Hip Ole (No.7) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Deeling Aces (No.11) — $8.50 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 37.3% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker from barrier 1 with a first-up record of 4:2-0-0, so the race could come to him if the front-runners go too hard.
Roughie: Oneforian (No.6) — $10.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers go on for the first time and he's been first-up dangerous with three wins from five starts, so he's a bold roughie if the top of the market gets caught out.

Race 8 – Gazebo & Shade Centre Hcp (C2)

Race type: Class 2, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with nobody mapped to lead, and Aristocrat from barrier 14 and So Regal from barrier 13 are drawn wide, so they have to work to get across. Lord Limerick from barrier 11 and Mishima from barrier 1 are the likeliest to find the front. The shape is against several of the midfield runners, which opens a door for the back-half runners.
Punty read: No money on this race from me, so think of the picks as a watch list. Lord Limerick is the horse I'd want at the top, but I'm not backing him at $8.00 with the place price this short. Noir Vitesse is the danger, with two wins and a placing record from the midfield and a strong Dist record. Aristocrat is the roughie that could come from the wide draw.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Lord Limerick (No.5) — $8.00 / $2.75
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), collects $80.63 if it wins ($60.00 win + $20.63 place), $20.63 if it only places
Prob 10.7% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why On the speed from barrier 11 with a Wangaratta 900m third last start, and he's won once from two on soft.
2. Riverbend Gold (No.10) — $8.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Noir Vitesse (No.6) — $14.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 1.32x Steady since tip
Why Midfield from barrier 12 with two wins and a Dist 7:2-2-1 record, so the trip could suit him.
Roughie: Aristocrat (No.1) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.6% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.04x Steady since tip
Why Wide draw from barrier 14 is the problem, but he's run second at Queanbeyan and a fourth at Albury 1600m, and if the pace is kept honest he can grind into the finish.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Burn For You in the market
Burn For You (Race 1, No.5) has blinkers off for the first time and winkers on for the first time, and the market has moved from $61.00 to $29.00. Watch the gear change in the betting.
2 - Harry Devil on the move
Harry Devil (Race 8, No.13) has come from $23.00 to $17.00 and his last start at Bendigo 1400m was a fourth after being held up with a slow start.
3 - Night Meeting, the Rip Van Winkle of Albury
Night Meeting (Race 6, No.17) has been off for 199 days, and his first-up record of 1:0-0-0 is one win from one start, so the nap has to end sometime.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Soft ground, slow tempos and a card full of maybe. Back the horses that have earned it, bet small on the chaos, and let the big ones come to you.
