Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden, 1880m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, with on pace types needing to keep finding gear
Punty read:
Slow tempo at 1880m is sneaky. Everyone gets lazy early, then the race kicks up and the ones who are close enough to let their engine work get the jump on late swoopers. Bailed is the obvious "get into the race early, then keep running" type, and with the field not exactly overflowing with map pressure, she should get every chance to control her own destiny. I also like All Intrique as the saver option type, because she has enough competitiveness to run up the queue if the leaders shuffle.

Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 47.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.29x
Why On a slow run, she should sit close and start peeling off at the right moment. Market support says she is more than just a name on paper.

Race type: Maiden, 1009m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, with Rum'un pushing the tempo and others chasing hard
Punty read:
This is the kind of 1009m where if you are not positioned early, the straight feels like it arrives too fast. Alkira is the speed and class feel, and with the market having that kind of certainty around her, she looks like the one that will jump and keep rolling. Brutal Empire is the exact type that can tuck in and hit the line hard if they split the race too wide, and Equivaster is one for the exotics if you want a shot, but it is not the spot to go too deep on place-only.

Map & tempo: Hot Pace, leaders pressing and the tempo doing the damage early
Punty read:
Hot pace in a sprint is a gift if your horse can sit in the pocket and pounce when the leaders start getting tired. Houlihan looks like the one that can ride the speed wave and not get stuck behind it, and geegeeschaser has the exact "always in the fight" profile that suits synthetic line running. Just Plain Nuts is right in the thick of it too, but at that price, I'm happier using him as the "if you're building, include" than the "must back" today.

Race type: Benchmark 68, 1350m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, leaders should keep honest pressure on
Punty read:
Benchmark races at 1350m on synthetic often reward the horse that can sit in the right spot, not the one who has to chase wide all day. Simply Deep has the kind of profile that fits this tempo, and Tuskegee's track record at Devonport says he is the kind of runner who can keep battling at the front end. The Spirit Of Zero is a danger in the broader picture, but at the price it is not screaming value on win, and the place angle is the one that needs luck or a cleaner run.

Map & tempo: Slow Pace, so positioning matters more than raw speed
Punty read:
Slow 1350m is where horses who can travel without burning gas get home. Colonel Bogey looks like the type that sits handy, then grinds out the finish when others are still finding rhythm. City Wok is the sort of runner that keeps earning small results and can place, but the price for win is not my lane. Cavaretta is the one that gives you that "if the breaks go her way, she can pop" spark, but I'm keeping the money focused on Bogey.

Race type: Class 3, 1650m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, so the middle distance runners can find their rhythm
Punty read:
At 1650m on synthetic, you want a runner that can handle the travel, then show up late without needing a perfect miracle gap. Azonto and Respite both look like those steady battlers who can keep working, and Regal Hunter is right there too. Respite at the current profile is the kind of place and win option that feels like the finish line is where she spends her best time, and that's why she gets a play as well.

Golden Mile on synthetic is basically a chess game with legs. You do not need the fastest horse, you need the horse that positions, waits, then bursts without getting swallowed by the pack. Sushi Express is the right kind of on pace runner for this tempo, and the market price suggests she is the one they think will hold her ground through the line. Whippin Piccadilly is the value place angle, she looks like she can run on with purpose if the race splits late.

1150m at the end of the card is where you want the horse that can keep it together from jump, then finish like she means it. Hartman is the main character here, Cherokee Dancer is the value place looker, and The Real Man is the speed hazard at the right price. I'm backing Hartman to do the boring, correct thing, which is what wins when the others get cute and start searching for gaps.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Devonport Synthetic on a rail true card with the sky doing that "maybe rain, maybe chaos" thing, aye. The track's synthetic so it stays pretty fair, but with wind chill and shower risk sitting there like a drunk bloke on last call, I want picks that handle a bit of mess and still race true. Today is one of those meetings where the speed matters, but the horses that can travel and find a run at the finish are the ones that cash when others get held up in traffic.
Now listen, this is a day with a clear spine, Bailed to kick us off, Alkira to keep it rolling, then I'm leaning on Hartman late to finish the night with a grin. I'm also not afraid of the place bets, because on synthetic with these fields, first to last can happen, but those top three likely to keep running is where the value lives.
Let's get into the madness, Race 1 to Race 8, and I'll tell you exactly who I'm backing and why, without turning it into a spreadsheet funeral.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Synthetic, 1009m to 1880m card
Rail: True
Official going: Synthetic, expected to play Speed vs Stamina showdown
Weather: Shower or two, 13°C, gusty, feels like 6.9°C, watch for late rain and wind gusts
Early lane guess: On pace to midfield in the first half of the program
Tempo profile: Mostly genuine to hot early, especially in the shorter races, so if you're back too far you're racing the clock as well
Jockeys to follow:
Jett Stanley: Gets the "travels, then finishes" jobs done, and she lands in the right spots when the race shape turns.
Hayley Mc Carthy: Rider who keeps them balanced through the hard bits, and today she's got the market types that can control tempo.
Anthony Darmanin: Loves these faster synthetic runs and has a habit of getting them travelling into the business end.
Stables to respect:
Barry Campbell (7 runners): Consistent across this card profile, plus he's got enough handy types to make pace patterns matter.
J K Blacker (6 runners): When he puts blinkers or visor work in, they usually show up ready to play, not sleepy.
Adam Trinder (4 runners): Strong when the track stays honest, and he's got one or two that can hit the line like the theme music just started.
Punty's take:
Devonport Synthetic is usually a place where you can trust running style, and today it's even more about early positioning. The long intro on a synthetic track can lull people, but when the pace is on, you need to be either leading or stalking, not wandering around hoping luck buys you a gap. Think of it like the first 20 minutes of a movie where everyone's waiting for the plot twist, except in this case the plot twist is "the gap isn't coming".
The good bit, though, is this card has plenty of horses that race on the map. Bailed in Race 1 is the kind of favourite that gets enough support because the positioning is straightforward, and she should get every chance to run through the line. Then Race 2 is a sprint where the front runners set the tempo, and Alkira and the market leaders are exactly the types you back when the speed is real and the finish is sharp.
By Race 8, I want the horse that knows this track language. Hartman is the one that looks set to keep doing the work at the right time and not get cute. When it gets down to 1150m, you don't want "maybe" tactics, you want a horse that turns into the straight already switched on.
What it means for you:
Be aggressive in the spots where the tempo is genuine and the gates suit the early plan. That's why I'm having a red hot go at the big three spine across the meeting. If you're trying to outsmart every race today, you'll have a bad time, the wind's already trying hard enough.
Protect yourself in the middle distances where interference and wide runs can swing results, and the place market becomes your seatbelt. When I've left a horse as "No Bet", it's because the race shape might turn it into a sit-and-suffer job, and today I'd rather spend my money where the race story lines up with how they actually run.
If you've got a couple of hours to watch, chase the pace in Races 2, 3, 6, and 8. Those are the ones where I'd rather be on the horse that can travel and find the line than the one hoping to thread a needle from no mans land.
