TAB We're On (Bm84)
2520m · Benchmark 84; · 12:15
✗ MISS -$15 Final

Race type: Benchmark 84, 2520m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Black Run to lead, with Bluestone and the midfield to stalk
Punty read: This is one of those staying handicaps where "true pace plus fitness" wins, not vibes. Black Run is the pace engine, but Our Chief is the one I like for the exact reason you back a stayer on a Good 4, he keeps lifting through the middle and doesn't look like he needs everything to go right. Nearco Frod is the danger if the race turns into a sprint from the 600m, because he's been consistent on-pace and drops into the right class. Tempesti is the sort you respect for place if the traffic issues clear, but Our Chief is drawn to get a comfortable run and keep rolling.

Jockeys Celebration Day Sprint
1000m · Open; · 12:50
✗ MISS -$15 Final

Race type: Open, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot pace with leaders Covert Action and Superbec to press early
Punty read: 1000m at Flemington is a bit like trying to thread a needle on a trampoline. If you're midpack and you get trapped, you're doing too much work for no reward. Eurocanto has the gear change and the market is interested, so you take that seriously. Rubare is on pace and looks like the type to hit a pocket and keep finding. Covert Action is the leader type, but with this sprint shape, whoever can sit close without frying early wins more often than the pure front runner.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Eurocanto (No.1) — $6.35 / $2.30 🏆 9TH

Phar Lap 100th Birthday (Bm100)
2000m · Benchmark 100; · 13:25
✓ WON +$1 Final

Race type: Benchmark 100, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Smokin' Romans to lead, with Star Of India and See That Storm pressers
Punty read: This is a classic 2000m Flemington script, lead, apply pressure, then keep running through the line because the straight doesn't give freebies. Smokin' Romans is the main driver. Star Of India and See That Storm are the two that can stalk just off the speed and pounce when the leader's breathing gets a bit louder. Flash Feeling is the long shot chaos wheel if the field strings out and the wrong runners get stopped by traffic. The biggest thing here is that it looks like the race is set up for a genuine tempo rather than a slow crawl, and that suits the model's top pick.

Top 3 + Roughie ($21.50 pool)

1. Smokin' Romans (No.1) — $3.45 / $1.35 🏆 4TH
Bet $8.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$8.00
Prob 33.7% | Place: 68.6% | Value: 1.30x

Victorian Jockeys' Association Trophy (Bm74)
1410m · Benchmark 74; · 14:00
✓ WON +$2 Final

Race type: Benchmark 74, 1410m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Fear No Evil pressing early, Kahhof and Darkbonee to stalk
Punty read: 1410m at Flemington is where "settling in range" is everything. Kahhof is the type to sit in the early pack and not overextend, and the market backing them suggests there's a real reason. Darkbonee is the obvious alternate, with the tactical midfield run and ability to lift late when the field starts to stretch. Fear No Evil's the leader, but if the pressure turns into sustained mid-race work, that's when stalkers can nick it. Itazura is a value landmine if the race rhythm breaks enough for him to get an unblocked run.

Top 3 + Roughie ($23.00 pool)

✗ MISS -$14 Final

Race type: Handicap, 1410m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Sixteen Reasons and multiple on pace types to control the rhythm
Punty read: This one's a classic mid-distance handicap puzzle where the right horse isn't the most famous one, it's the one that gets a clean run and keeps charging. Salizou's the model pick and he maps well for a race where the leaders get "moderate" pressure rather than a full gas job. Cherish Me is the other big danger, with the early positioning and enough ability to hit the front late. Silent Shares is the best each-way style, the sort that sits midfield and keeps finding in the last 300m when others stop pretending.

Top 3 + Roughie ($22.00 pool)

1. Salizou (No.10) — $4.95 / $1.85 🏆 7TH

Prob 18.2% | Place: 62.4% | Value: 1.04x
Why He's the value win that gets a fair tempo. If the leaders get a breather, Salizou's the one to capitalize.

✓ WON +$7 Final

Race type: Benchmark 84, 1620m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with Unbelievable and Farhh Flung to shape around the middle
Punty read: 1620m at Flemington is where the horse that sustains wins, not the one that just tastes the front. Kaleo is the standout profile because he's got the place chance plus the win shot, and he matches the type the track suits on a Good 4. Touchdown is the obvious speed and is short in the model, but the win value is not there. Farhh Flung is your danger for place and trifecta structure if he gets into the right spot early and doesn't get shuffled back too far.

Top 3 + Roughie ($18.50 pool)

1. Touchdown (No.10) — $1.90 / $1.14 🏆 WINNER

Bet $10.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$8.00
Prob 22.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.40x

1200m · Handicap · 15:50
✗ MISS -$14 Final

Race type: Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, leaders set up with Star Patrol and Arkansaw Kid to pressure early
Punty read: 1200m is where you want horses that can sit just off the speed and then turn it into a straight line race. Arkansaw Kid draws well and looks like the type to run a tough one. Star Patrol is the leader who can hang on, but with a race this open, the "sitting in the pocket" style is the payday. Ndola is short enough to be tempting and the model sees her place potential like she's wearing a seatbelt. Just remember, with 1200m, a lot of chances come undone in the first 200m by getting shuffled too deep.

Top 3 + Roughie ($22.00 pool)

Race type: Benchmark 100, 1410m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Rise At Dawn leads, Sass Appeal applies pressure and threatens through the middle
Punty read: Sass Appeal is basically the day's main character. She's short because she's legit, and at 1410m on Good 4 with the rail out, she can control where the race goes without having to chase a miracle. Rise At Dawn is the biggest resistance, because if the leader gets clear enough to stick around, you get that dogfight finish and the model says she's still a danger. Coeur Volante is the fit and classy mare who can show up late if the race opens.

Race type: Benchmark 78, 1100m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Naval Academy and Just Like Gaby to be on the speed, Nimbustwothousand midfield with along-the-rail runners
Punty read: 1100m sprints can go either way. You want either the genuine leader or the one who can sit just off without being forced to go early. Just Like Gaby is shortish on place profile and has been bold in the right sort of setups. Naval Academy is the model's main danger because he's the on pace type who can hang on for a place, and if the race tempo is sharp, that might turn into a win. El Pibe De Oro is live for a finishing run, but the model doesn't want him as an aggressive bet today. Along The River is the mover you take note of, because the price shape suggests there's intent.

Punty's Early Mail

Rightio Loose Units, Flemington on a Good 4 that's behaving like it actually wants to pay someone today. Rail is out 10m around the circuit, wind's light and straight line tailwind is on the menu, so the ballsy closers can hang in there a touch longer than your mates expect. Pace profile is basically, "don't park too deep unless you mean it", with the longer trips rewarding horses that can keep rolling, not just hit the gas once.

Alright, here's the spine. Sass Appeal in Race 8 looks like the cleanest roulette wheel. Our Chief in Race 1 has that "value and place both want it" vibe. And Smokin' Romans in Race 3 is the kind of on-pacer who makes everyone else watch the replay. If you do the day like a sane degenerate, you back those three and let the chaos do its own thing in the side races.

Now buckle up Ratbags, because the meeting's got enough tempo to make a few "obvious" favourites get mugged. Market drifters are screaming in a couple of spots, and when the rail is out 10m, you can get runs wider than the punters you stole the rails from would've planned. Punty's not here to be boring, he's here to have opinions with receipts.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Good 4, 1000-2520m card
Rail: Out 10m Entire Circuit
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play FIRM, sprint to middle suits with late sustain)
Weather: Clear, 11°C, humidity 61%, wind 11km/h N (watch for tailwind up the straight helping closers)
Early lane guess: On speed early, don't get trapped back in the 1000m and 1200m
Tempo profile: Genuine to moderate pace most races, so leaders can win, but the straight line tailwind gives late sections a chance to steal it
Jockeys to follow:
Ethan Brown: firing in multiple feature races and he suits horses that can sit in the wheel and pounce.
Luke Cartwright: keeps showing up with the right timing, especially where the map favours staying in range.
Jye McNeil: quick work early, usually pressures well and doesn't just babysit the position.
Stables to respect:
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (8 runners): their horses map into the right spots, and when they gear them up they generally mean it.
C Maher (4 runners): if a Maher runner gets into a rhythm, you're cooked if you ignore them.
D T O'Brien (3 runners): sends out stayers and middle distance types that don't panic late.

Punty's take:

Flemington today is one of those cards where the "best-looking" horse can still get rolled, but only if you ignore the pace shape. The wind pattern is doing the closers favours, especially up the straight, so if you've got a runner that can sustain rather than just flash, that's where the value lives.

Race 8 is the big fat bullseye. Sass Appeal is dominating the win probability, and even though she's short, she's the type that actually makes sense on a Good 4 with the rail out. Then you've got Race 1 and Race 3, both longer trips, where Our Chief and Smokin' Romans bring the right mix of fitness, map, and "won't stop trying".

For the punter traps: watch your assumptions on the 1000m and the open sprints. Barriers matter, but it's more about whether the horse can hold position without spending petrol. When the market is heavy and the race shape is hot, sometimes the 'second best' horse gets the run because the favourite ends up doing too much work.

What it means for you:

If you want the boring way to have fun, you build your bankroll around the Big 3 spine, then you protect it with place bets in the chaos. Your best ROI lane today is place, not smash the win button and pray. In Race 1, that's literally how Our Chief pays his way. In Race 2, Eurocanto and Rubare are both playable depending on how tight the race is, but the model leans hard towards the top end.

Sequence stuff is entertainment today. Early Quaddie is the widest risk window and it's built on open races, so you're paying for entertainment and variance. Quaddie is a bit later, with fewer total "landmine" legs, but still open races enough to make it a sweat. If you're doing sequences, keep it tight, don't get cute, and treat it like a punt at the pub, not an investment portfolio.
