Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Nanango, head to https://punty.ai/tips/nanango-2026-05-23
Rightio Loose Units, Nanango's serving up a five-race country scrap on a Good 4 with the rail true and a sneaky SE breeze, so the on-pace brigade won't get a picnic and the swoopers need the race to melt apart.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Nanango, 1000-1600m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play fair, with a slight lean to on-pace runners if the breeze bites)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 21°C, humidity 55%, wind 22km/h SE, gusts to 31.5km/h (watch for a bit of chop in the straight)
Early lane guess: Fair inside, but leaders who hold a spot should get first crack
Tempo profile: Mostly moderate early, with genuine pace in Races 4 and 5; you want a forward map or a clean run from midfield
Jockeys to follow:
Nathan Fazackerley — gets plenty of the better maps here, including Lulu A Natural, Black 'n' Deadly and Milton Road, so he's in the box seat to land the right run.
Ms Hannah Richardson — aboard Craiglea Bronte and she knows how to make a race tactical when the rest of the field starts faffing about.
Reece O'Connell — keeps landing on handy stalker types, which is gold on a fair track when the speed gets honest.
Stables to respect:
Jack Brown (2 runners) — Lulu A Natural and Valley Of Fame both have setups where they can sneak into the money if they jump clean.
Glenn Richardson (2 runners) — Horrible Hank and Run Ziggy Run have enough gear-and-map upside to be dangerous if the race shape goes their way.
R B Williams (2 runners) — So Outrageous and Entrepreneurial are the sort who can roll forward and make their own luck when the tempo is right.
Punty's take: This meeting feels like a proper bush brawl with a few landmines. Race 1 is a maiden mess, Race 2 is a handicap headache, Race 3 and Race 5 look like the honest tempo races where position counts, and Race 4 is the full-on knife fight where the right map beats the prettiest profile most days.
The track should be fair enough, but with the rail true and the wind having a poke, you don't want to be stone motherless at the back waiting for miracles like you're in a scene from The Matrix. The horses that can park handy, get a breather, and then peel out at the right time are the ones I want in my pocket. Lulu A Natural, Black 'n' Deadly, Ready And Mabel and So Outrageous all fit that story in different ways, while the roughies mostly need the race to fall in a heap and the speed to fold like a deck chair.
What it means for you: Don't go full goblin early. Race 1 and Race 2 are more about survival than heroics, so keep your powder dry and let the map do the talking. The smarter money is around the runners who can get into the first four without torching petrol - that's where Nanango gives you the best chance to stay alive.
Race 3, Race 4 and Race 5 are where you can actually have a proper crack. Black 'n' Deadly has the cleanest run at it, Ready And Mabel and Milton Road are the class/map combo in the open plate, and So Outrageous looks the sort who can pinch a break and make the others chase in vain. If you're playing exotics, keep them tight and don't start inventing fairy tales - this card will happily mug the overconfident.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Lulu A Natural (Race 1, No.8) — $3.56
Why Maps to sit just off the speed and should get first crack at a few maidens who've been finding excuses rather than the line.
2 - Black 'n' Deadly (Race 3, No.6) — $7.52
Why The genuine tempo suits, and this bloke looks the one most likely to land handy and keep the pressure on.
3 - So Outrageous (Race 5, No.2) — $11.11
Why Rolls forward in a mile where the speed should be honest enough for him to bully the race from the front.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~297.36 = ~$2,973.57 collect
Race 1 – Maiden mayhem
Race type: Mdn Plate, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Lulu A Natural and Aliza the likely early speed while the backmarkers need luck
Punty read: This is a proper little maiden rort - plenty of runners, a few excuses, and not a heap of certainty. Lulu A Natural is the one the market's latched onto, but there's no steamroller here; it's more about which one handles the first 200m and doesn't lose the plot. If the leaders overdo it, Yonaka can lob in late and make a nuisance of herself.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Lulu A Natural (No.8) — $3.56 / $1.85
Bet $12.00 Place, return $22.20
Prob 24.1% | Place: 39.7% | Value: 0.84x
Why Gets the right run from a forward map and looks the one most likely to hit the line when the rest have been busy burning petrol.
2. Beltone (No.5) — $6.10 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.1% | Place: 30.3% | Value: 0.95x
Why Honest type with enough ability to go close if the race turns into a slog, but the price doesn't hand you a free kick.
3. Exceptional Rupert (No.1) — $6.37 / $2.79
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.9% | Place: 25.5% | Value: 0.81x
Why Blinkers off first time could settle him, but he still has to prove he can put it all together after the slow start last time.
Roughie: Yonaka (No.3) — $18.87 / $6.96
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.5% | Place: 16.0% | Value: 1.35x
Why If the speed cooks the lot of them and she gets the right trail, she can be the one charging home when the rest are gasping.
Race 2 – Handicap headache
Race type: Hcp (50), 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Craiglea Bronte and Meanie likely to press forward while Wally's Boy and Missy's Ready are hoping for the right drag into it
Punty read: This is the sort of race that makes sane people drink before noon. The market thinks Paballo is the answer, but the map says there's a few moving parts and a few blokes likely to get in each other's way. Wally's Boy has the soft draw and a legitimate excuse last start, but the model's basically saying 'track him, don't force him'. Craiglea Bronte is the rough little bolt from the blue if the leaders carve each other up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($0.00 pool)
1. Wally's Boy (No.1) — $15.15 / $5.72
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $113.62 (wins) / $42.90 (places)
Prob 12.0% | Place: 34.6% | Value: 1.69x
Why Nice barrier and a forgive last start after interference, but the market's already pushed him into roughie territory and Punty's not forcing the issue.
2. Meanie (No.6) — $9.17 / $3.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.2% | Place: 30.2% | Value: 0.87x
Why Can lead and give them something to catch, but the weight push and this messy map make him more watchlist than wallet-smasher.
3. Missy's Ready (No.7) — $15.62 / $5.87
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 30.0% | Value: 1.48x
Why First-up off a long break and likely to need the race run to suit; if they go hard early, he'll be the one making late noise.
Roughie: Letters Of Romance (No.4) — $17.24 / $6.41
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 28.3% | Value: 1.52x
Why Has enough zip to stalk the leaders, but from there he needs the gaps to open like a bloody red carpet.
Race 3 – The speed squeeze
Race type: BENCHMARK 55, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate tempo, with Black 'n' Deadly and Prince Of Diamonds the key early movers while Jain and Silent Fox are trying to time the swoop
Punty read: This is the cleanest race on the card for map and tempo. Black 'n' Deadly looks the one that gets the right sit, and with a few handy types drawn to keep him honest, he shouldn't be sitting there on his own like a weirdo at karaoke. Silent Fox and Jain can finish over the top if the leaders go bananas, but I still want the horse with the best tactical position.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Black 'n' Deadly (No.6) — $7.52 / $3.17
Bet $10.50 Place, return $33.28
Prob 15.6% | Place: 44.9% | Value: 0.91x
Why Best map in the race and the sort of tempo that lets him settle handy before having a crack at them late.
2. Silent Fox (No.1) — $5.95 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.1% | Place: 39.2% | Value: 0.61x
Why Honest enough horse, but from this draw and map he's relying on the race falling apart a touch more than I'd like.
3. Jain (No.4) — $5.29 / $2.43
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 38.4% | Value: 0.53x
Why Blinkers again might sharpen him up, but he's still a backmarker in a race where you'd rather not be giving away too much rope.
Roughie: Grandeur Rose (No.14) — $11.24 / $4.41
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.7% | Place: 35.6% | Value: 1.03x
Why If the tempo gets silly and the wide draw doesn't kill her, she can storm late and make the leaders feel very ordinary.
Race 4 – Open plate stoush
Race type: Open Plate, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo, with Entrepreneurial forcing the issue and plenty of speed types wanting a piece of the pie
Punty read: This is the race where the gloves come off. Ready And Mabel and Milton Road both map well enough to be in the fight when the bullets start flying, while Horrible Hank is the cheeky bugger with first-time gear who can swoop if the leaders turn it into a demolition derby. This is the sort of race where the classier horses can still get done if they get caught sleeping on the wheel.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.00 pool)
1. Ready And Mabel (No.12) — $5.95 / $2.65
Bet $9.50 Each Way ($4.75W + $4.75P), return $28.26 (wins) / $12.59 (places)
Prob 14.9% | Place: 42.6% | Value: 0.85x
Why Good draw for the map, honest recent form, and the stable has her in the right spot to stalk and pounce.
2. Milton Road (No.5) — $3.85 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.1% | Place: 36.2% | Value: 0.45x
Why The one they all have to beat on class and positioning; if he lands handy without spending petrol, he'll be right in the finish.
3. Horrible Hank (No.10) — $22.22 / $8.07
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.8% | Place: 33.0% | Value: 2.31x
Why First-time blinkers and tongue tie is a proper stable message, and if the speed gets cooked he's the one who can come over the top like a bastard from nowhere.
Roughie: King Jester (No.4) — $10.53 / $4.18
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.8% | Place: 30.3% | Value: 0.99x
Why Honest enough and not without a shout, but the map and the price say he's more of a supporting actor than the hero.
Race 5 – Mile of mayhem
Race type: BENCHMARK 50, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine tempo, with So Outrageous likely to roll forward and a few backmarkers hoping the front-runners go too hard
Punty read: This is a proper tempo race where the mile matters and the leaders can't be lazy. So Outrageous is the bloke with the map to make it a test, while Bugden is the one with enough class to keep chipping away if they overcook it early. Praise You is the roughie who's going to need the race to open up and a bit of luck, because from where he sits it's a long way back and a long way home.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. So Outrageous (No.2) — $11.11 / $4.37
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), return $83.32 (wins) / $32.77 (places)
Prob 16.4% | Place: 25.9% | Value: 1.82x
Why The one likely to dictate the race, and if he gets a breather mid-race he could be a bastard to run down.
2. Bugden (No.4) — $2.80 / $1.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.5% | Place: 20.9% | Value: 0.35x
Why Short and sweet - the class horse in the race, but the setup says place is the safer way to play the bugger.
3. Babalola (No.3) — $12.99 / $5.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.5% | Place: 18.2% | Value: 1.37x
Why The gear bash is serious and the stable's clearly trying to wake him up; if they do, he can grunt into the finish from midfield.
Roughie: Praise You (No.1) — $14.29 / $5.43
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.0% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 1.43x
Why Needs everything to go right, but if the pace is brutal and he gets the cheap run, he can sneak into the finish.
SEQUENCE LANES — SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
No Quaddie or Big 6 lane today - Nanango's only a five-race card, so don't force a sequence that doesn't exist. The Big 3 Multi above is the only proper rope to pull, and that's plenty of fun for a Thursday brawl.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - True rail, short card, no hiding
With the rail true and only five races on the dance card, there isn't much room for nonsense. Horses that can hold a spot - especially in Races 3, 4 and 5 - are the ones getting the first crack at the loot.
2 - The gear changes are doing some heavy lifting
Horrible Hank, Babalola, Exceptional Rupert and Valley Of Fame all have gear fiddles that scream 'we're trying something'. Sometimes that wakes a horse up, sometimes it's just lipstick on a pig, but it makes these races interesting as hell.
3 - The roughie path is basically a movie plot
Yonaka, Horrible Hank and Praise You all need the race to split open like a Marvel third act. If the speed turns ugly, they can swoop; if not, they're just expensive tickets to a headache.
FINAL WORD FROM THE DEGEN DEN
This is a short card with a few traps, so don't get seduced by every shiny number on the page. Stick to the runners that map cleanly, keep the roughies as spice rather than the main feed, and enjoy the scrap without trying to punch holes through the wall. Gamble Responsibly.
