Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Penola, head to https://punty.ai/tips/penola-2026-10-16
Rightio Loose Units, Penola on a Soft 5 where the track makes cowards of good plans and punters into optimists. 7 races, 93 runners, 4 scratchings, and you can practically hear the rails doing overtime. This is one of those meetings where the pace map matters early, then the real degenerates come through late on the right sort of runner.
I'm going to keep it simple for you though. There's a clear Big 3 spine in the winners department, then the rest of the card is about catching the right horses when they're being ignored. The Soft 5 at Penola is a 'carry the speed, then pay for it' kind of vibe. If you're off the speed too far, you're fishing in the slop. If you're on the wrong side of the speed, you're cooked before you hit the straight.
Now, settle in. We'll run the race-by-race like it's the last few minutes at the TAB counter, then lock in your lanes for the Quaddie fun.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Penola, 1000-2000m card
Rail: True
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play Speed then Run On)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 10°C (feels like 7.3°C), gusts around 16.7km/h, watch for cold-soft legs getting a bit sticky late
Early lane guess: Quaddie lane is naturally spread, Race 4 is the anchor
Tempo profile: Moderate pace on paper, but Soft 5 turns it into a 'real effort' tempo, so the ON-PACE and LEADER types get their chance
Jockeys to follow:
Campbell Rawiller: heavy involvement today, plus he keeps finding the map-friendly rides
Connor Murtagh: stacked bookings, plenty of chances to get involved early
Harry Grace: reliable hand, and he's on a key runner in Race 1
Stables to respect:
S & J Jaensch (5): firing at this meet, especially in the maiden trenches
Garret Lynch (4): aggressive campaigner energy, expect him to have one ready to pounce
Wayne Walters (4): there's often a sneaky place machine in his string
Punty's take:
Penola on a Soft 5 is basically a long-form test of who can keep pulling without getting dragged under by the ground. The tempo is moderate, but the surface makes everyone work, so those first 200-400m decisions matter a lot more than people think. When a horse maps to lead or sit ON-PACE, you're backing position, not just a name.
Across the card, I'm leaning on a few key map plays and gear signals. Race 1 looks like a maiden where the "speed lane" is real, and I like the favourite type to hold the line. Race 4 is the big standout, Vanlee looks like he's been built for this kind of track. Then Race 7 is another race where you want the correct kind of sitting spot, By Nine should get every chance to hit through the last section.
And yeah, I'm going to cop it if we cop a wobble, but the way this meeting sets up, you either cover the right lanes or you end up watching the quinella land without you. I'm not doing that.
What it means for you:
Be aggressive where the favourite profile matches the map. Race 1, Race 4, and Race 7 are the spine, those are your "just get it done" lanes. In between, you're playing for value on place types and keeping your coverage tight in the Quaddie.
If you're chasing the Quaddie, the biggest danger isn't missing winners, it's missing ONE leg because you got cute in a Soft 5 middle distance race. So, keep it sensible, use the lanes I'm giving you, and don't start adding random long shots unless you're fully committed to the chaos.
Gamble with a plan, not vibes. If you want entertainment, go wide. If you want returns, be smart on which legs are the wide ones. Today's wide ones are mostly the middle quaddie legs, Race 4 is the anchor.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Calm The Press (Race 1, No.2) — $3.10
Why Maps to the speed, and the Soft 5 suits his running style.
2 - Vanlee (Race 4, No.7) — $4.05
Why Proper standout profile, should control the race shape and hold value.
3 - By Nine (Race 7, No.6) — $5.18
Why The right sort of sit, then he grabs the race with a clean run at them late.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~ $65 = ~ $650 collect
Race 1 – Access Capital Finance Brokers Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1075m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Tai Po Jewel is the stated pace advantaged type, but this race leans speed vs the ground
Punty read:
This is a maiden where the race shape is half the battle. Calm The Press (No.2) is drawn close and gets to race on the front half. On a Soft 5 at Penola, that usually means you're not spending the whole straight trying to negotiate the surface. Stella's Charm (No.6) has the best "run into it late" look, with gear that can help her actually put it together. Arizona Wildfire (No.1) has had the excuses, but he's still got to find a heap of improvement quickly with weight up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($17.50 pool)
1. Calm The Press (No.2) — $3.10 / place tote
Bet $9.50 Win, return $29.45
Prob 31.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.95x
Why Sticks to the speed lane and should get enough breathing room to hit the line strongly.
2. Stella's Charm (No.6) — $6.85 / place tote
Bet $8.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 19.5% | Place: 53.6% | Value: 1.30x
Why Soft 5 and Penola tempo suit, and she's the best "cover the favourite" place angle.
3. Arizona Wildfire (No.1) — $5.26 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.84x
Why Excuses are real, but the weight rise plus the maiden scrap makes it a stretch.
Roughie: Egyptians Reign (No.3) — $13.70 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.4% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 0.85x
Why If the speed collapses and he slices late, he can sneak a place, but winning feels hard from here.
Race 2 – Sportsbet Race Previews Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, a bunch of mid-packers with a few pace-advantaged types
Punty read:
This one's a 1400m maiden on a Soft 5, so you want horses that can keep working without getting swallowed. Willebob (No.7) is the one I want to be onside with, he should get a run into the race with those blinkers and nose roll getting him sharper. Just Comet (No.11) looks like the place getter who keeps showing up, and Stepify (No.12) is the roughie profile if it turns into a scramble late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($14.00 pool)
1. Willebob (No.7) — $3.89 / place tote
Bet $7.00 Win, return $27.23
Prob 23.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.91x
Why Big chance to sit close enough and take advantage of the Soft 5 effort race.
2. Just Comet (No.11) — $5.03 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.9% | Place: 54.2% | Value: 1.00x
Why A real chance — but at that price the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Never Pegasus (No.6) — $8.55 / place tote
Bet $7.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 10.5% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.90x
Why If he can hold position, this is the sort of runner who can pop into the placings without drama.
Roughie: Stepify (No.12) — $13.16 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.6% | Place: 34.6% | Value: 1.13x
Why The blinkers upgrade is a live hope, but I want the safer coverage done first.
Race 3 – Digiorgio Coonawarra (Bm68)
Race type: Benchmark 68, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Soft 5 so the ON-PACE brigade can still have a crack
Punty read:
Thermodynamic (No.4) is the key type in this Benchmark 68, he's drawn into the ON-PACE lane and keeps finding runs where it matters. Savsonic (No.2) is live on class and condition, but I'm more interested in him for place if the race stays honest. Sacramental (No.1) has the gate one story and can get a trip through the middle without burning up. If you want a roughie, Zadows Landing (No.3) can run on, but you're praying for a clean run at the right point of the straight.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.00 pool)
1. Thermodynamic (No.4) — $5.75 / place tote
Bet $4.50 Win, return $25.88
Prob 20.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.07x
Why ON-PACE shape, Soft 5 suits, and the race needs a runner who can keep tackling the ground late.
2. Savsonic (No.2) — $6.90 / place tote
Bet $5.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 15.5% | Place: 49.1% | Value: 0.97x
Why He's in the mix, but I'm not trusting him over the top of the other two.
3. Sacramental (No.1) — $7.46 / place tote
Bet $1.50 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 14.9% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.01x
Why Gate one and a patient trip gives him every opportunity to sneak into the first three.
Roughie: Zadows Landing (No.3) — $12.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.92x
Why If he moves early enough, he can run past tired legs, but it's not the easiest route to a win.
Race 4 – Adrian Thomas Industrial (Bm68)
Race type: Benchmark 68, 1075m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, leaders have the edge, it's a sprint where position is oxygen
Punty read:
Vanlee (No.7) is the obvious meeting pulse in this one. He's the leader type and the Soft 5 just means he needs to stay comfortable, which he should if he gets into his rhythm early. Grand Host (No.2) is the danger if the favourite has any wobble, and Dothraki (No.1) is the place chance when the race gets busy. This is the sprint where you either hold your nerve early or you watch them fly past while you're still loading up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)
1. Vanlee (No.7) — $4.05 / place tote
Bet $9.00 Win, return $36.45
Prob 30.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.25x
Why Maps to the front, in a race where speed is everything, and he's built for this ground.
2. Grand Host (No.2) — $4.63 / place tote
Bet $5.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 18.6% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.86x
Why Close enough to worry them, but I'm not grabbing it as a win.
3. Dothraki (No.1) — $10.10 / place tote
Bet $10.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 10.0% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.01x
Why If Vanlee controls it, Dothraki's value becomes the place chaos late.
Roughie: Artissi (No.5) — $12.20 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 29.7% | Value: 0.85x
Why He can hit the line, but the sprint on a Soft 5 punishes anyone who needs everything to go right.
Race 5 – Med Electrical Hcp (56)
Race type: Handicap, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, so the danger is getting too far back on a ground-heavy trip
Punty read:
Magnetic Edge (No.3) is the classier option and he's the one I want sitting in the right spot, not chasing his own tail. Easy Beast (No.9) is a real threat for place, and Smokin' Rohie (No.4) is there if the race turns into a mid-race slog, because those types can run on and steal it. Sharma Princess (No.12) is the roughie we keep in the back pocket, but the win path has to open up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)
1. Magnetic Edge (No.3) — $5.71 / place tote
Bet $3.00 Win, return $17.13
Prob 20.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.17x
Why Strong blend of pace position and staying power, should get a proper crack in the run.
2. Easy Beast (No.9) — $8.06 / place tote
Bet $6.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 16.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.30x
Why He's the sort to keep going through the middle and be there when others tire.
3. Smokin' Rohie (No.4) — $8.20 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.06x
Why I like him, but the win value isn't loud enough for my side.
Roughie: Sharma Princess (No.12) — $11.36 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.5% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.08x
Why If the tempo stays heavy and he can find clear running, he's live, but he needs luck.
Race 6 – PPHS Hcp (54)
Race type: Handicap, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, it's a short sprint at that distance, so you need the right travelling position
Punty read:
Sports Choice (No.12) is the betting anchor because he looks like the one to land in the right lane and keep going. Anrushka (No.5) is the value place play, and Quizlet (No.2) is the sort who can sneak into the first few if she gets a clean run and the leaders soften. If Casino Showgirl (No.3) is going to run into it, she needs the race to turn into a job for the midpack, which can happen on Soft 5.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Sports Choice (No.12) — $4.88 / place tote
Bet $5.50 Win, return $26.84
Prob 24.3% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.18x
Why Backing the right kind of trip, pace works for him, and he should be hardest late.
2. Anrushka (No.5) — $10.42 / place tote
Bet $5.50 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 12.2% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.27x
Why Softer ground helps his action, and he should be there to pick up pieces.
3. Quizlet (No.2) — $10.20 / place tote
Bet $2.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 10.6% | Place: 34.3% | Value: 1.08x
Why Blinkers and new equipment type changes can sharpen him, and 1300m rewards that.
Roughie: Casino Showgirl (No.3) — $9.09 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.89x
Why Needs the right run, and I'm keeping my powder dry for the stronger place angles.
Race 7 – Barry Maney Ford Hcp (54)
Race type: Handicap, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, but the Soft 5 makes it a real grind over the 1600
Punty read:
By Nine (No.6) is the one with the cleanest "get a run, then hit" story. Hasta La Prince (No.8) is the value on the place side, she can keep in touch and peel off late when the pack fatigues. On The Map (No.11) is the other place option if he gets a tactical run and doesn't get trapped wide without cover.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. By Nine (No.6) — $5.18 / place tote
Bet $5.00 Win, return $25.90
Prob 26.6% | Place: 59.1% | Value: 1.10x
Why Proper pace profile for Soft 5, and he's the one I want still rolling when the others start slipping.
2. Hasta La Prince (No.8) — $10.00 / place tote
Bet $5.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 17.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.42x
Why If she gets into the right spot early, she's a huge threat late for the placings.
3. On The Map (No.11) — $11.49 / place tote
Bet $2.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 10.3% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.95x
Why Place chance with a run at them style, especially if the leaders take each other on.
Roughie: Rippa Buddy (No.3) — $14.49 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 33.0% | Value: 0.99x
Why Can place if the race turns into a scramble, but I want my money in the nearer finishers.
SEQUENCE LANES
Quaddie (R4-R7)
Smart: 2,7,1,5 / 3,9,4,12 / 12,5,3,2 / 6,8,11,3 (256 combos x $0.25 = $65.00) -- 25% flexi
Punty's take: Three chaos-ish legs in the middle, Race 4 is the lock, still an entertainment quad unless the first couple leg winners show up where we expect.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - The Soft 5 sprint test is real at Penola
On short races here, if you don't get position, you get bogged. Race 4 is built for that and why Vanlee is the anchor.
2 - Place value is living in the gear changes
Stella's Charm (Race 1 No.6), and Quizlet (Race 6 No.2) both have gear that can fix that "stuck in the wrong gear" feeling on Soft 5.
3 - Watch the leaders, then forgive the rest
Penola races often look tactical early, but Soft 5 makes the middle phase expensive. That's why the pace-aligned runners are holding up better than the backmarkers.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
If you're chasing a result today, don't overthink it, back the map, back the shape, and let the Soft 5 do its thing. I'll be sweating the late section like it owes me money, and if it lands, you owe me a drink.
