Alright legends, Heavy 8 at Te Rapa is always a bit like Fight Club, you can't really fake your way through it. The early pace matters, but more importantly, it matters who can stay balanced when the jockey asks for pressure. When the leaders kick, they do it with that "let's see who breaks first" attitude, and the rest follow on hoping they get a clean run at the end.
This card has that classic vibe where the speed doesn't disappear, it just gets punished. So in the mid races, I'm with the on-pace or mid-pack runners that look like they'll get a genuine crack at the line rather than the ones who are always chasing gaps that never show up.
Big standout pattern today, a few runners are getting backed or firming at the exact time punters want to overthink it. If the market is leaning into them and the race map makes sense, I'm taking the hint. But if the favourite is short for a reason and there's no tactical reason to oppose it, I'm not being a hero either. I'm here for the value, and if the value is staring at me in the face, I'm picking it up with both hands like it owes me money.
