Seventeen three-year-olds, 2500m, three million dollars on the line, and not one of them wants to lead. Somebody's going to get stuck with the job.

The Howden Victoria Derby is a Group 1 for three-year-olds at Flemington over 2500m, run under set weights, with 17 runners going around. Our numbers make No.1 Cormier the most likely winner at 20.3%, a fair price of $4.93 against a market price of $5.70. The most likely winner and the best value are different horses here, and that difference is the whole race.

Best value is No.5 Murshidi. We make him 9.0%, the market has him at $14.00, and that's an edge of +26.0%. Value is not the same as likely. He's drawn barrier 17 and he'll be last or close to it, so he is a horse the market has underpriced, not a horse we expect to win. The danger is No.2 Stormy Marco: we rate him second, but the market has him shorter than we do, so he's a good horse at a price we don't love.

This is a field of lightly raced three-year-olds, mostly stepping up in trip, and the set weights mean nobody is carrying a penalty for being good. Everyone is on 57kg except Quick Finish at 55kg. The book sits at 108.1%, so the bookies are taking their cut across a wide-open betting heat.

  • Most likely winner: #1 Cormier (20.3%, fair $4.93)
  • Best value: #5 Murshidi (9.0%, fair $11.11)
  • Danger: #2 Stormy Marco (15.8%, fair $6.34)

A positive edge is not automatically a bet. Punty's actual bets come from the tips card.

How Punty Gets There

Start with Cormier. We make him 20.3%, which converts to a fair price of $4.93. The market has him at $5.70, and once the bookmaker margin is stripped out the market's own chance is 16.2%. That gap is an edge of +15.6%. It's a modest edge on a horse with one win from seven starts, and it comes from our numbers rating his Group 1 form at Randwick above what the market gives him credit for. We'd call it value at $5.70 or better.

Murshidi is the other side of the ledger. We make him 9.0%, a fair price of $11.11, and the market's $14.00 gives an edge of +26.0%. A bigger edge on a lower chance means more uncertainty, not more certainty. A horse can be well overpriced and still lose nine times out of ten. We'd get interested at $12.80 or better, and the market already pays that.

Stormy Marco is the reverse. We make him 15.8%, fair price $6.34, and the market sits at $5.40, an edge of -14.8%. He's rated well, but not at that price.

How This Thing Probably Unfolds

Nobody maps to lead, which is a funny way to start a Derby. The four likeliest to find the front are Skua from barrier 12, Cignetti from barrier 11, Cold Shower from barrier 4 and Quick Finish from barrier 10. Three of those four are handy types our numbers say the shape hurts most, because a stop-start tempo with a bunch of them going forward gives them no easy lead to settle on. Cold Shower from the inside is the one with the cheapest route to the front.

No.1 Cormier and No.12 Written Empire sit midfield, with No.17 Meet The Prince also midfield on the inside rail. Ten runners are mapped at the back, including Stormy Marco, True Rebel, Murshidi, Vallice, King Snitz, Icy You, True Tone, Russian Rock, King Winston and Locked In. That is a lot of horses all trying to settle behind the same leaders.

If the tempo ends up moderate, leaders get a soft ride and the backmarkers have to pick off a bunch from the turn. The wide draws make that harder. Stormy Marco (15), True Rebel (16), Murshidi (17), Vallice (13) and True Tone (14) all need cover or luck to avoid being three wide with no cover. Our map says no runner is clearly suited by the expected pace. That's a polite way of saying the pace is a coin toss, so this race comes down more to who gets a trip.

The Race Has Seen Some Shit

The Victoria Derby has been running since the first one in 1855, with eight runners. Fillies won the first three runnings, and Frances Tressady in 1923 was the last filly to win. Phar Lap won it in 1929. Tulloch started at 1/10 in 1957, the shortest-priced favourite in the race's history, while Rebel Raider saluted at triple-figure odds in 2008. Gai Waterhouse became the first woman to train a Derby winner with Nothin' Leica Dane in 1995.

On the recent record, four of the last ten winners started favourite, in 2017, 2021, 2023 and 2025. That's an INTERESTING pattern with an n of 10. The mechanism is set weights: the best three-year-old carries no penalty, so class tends to tell more often than it does in a handicap. All ten of the last ten winners were priced at the outer edge of the betting or shorter. Also INTERESTING, also n=10. The mechanism is that few three-year-olds are proven over 2500m, and the market tends to find the ones bred and raced for the trip.

Seven of the last ten winners drew barrier 7 or lower, which is a PUB STAT at n=10 and not much more than that. Goldrush Guru won from barrier 13 in 2024. Extra Brut also won from barrier 13 in 2018. Chris Waller trained the 2022 and 2023 winners, and Ciaron Maher was trainer or co-trainer in 2021 and 2025, a PUB STAT with n=10 and a count of 2. John Allen rode two of the last ten winners, Extra Brut in 2018 and Hitotsu in 2021, another PUB STAT. Four of the last ten winners ran at Caulfield last start, and the main lead-up races for three-year-olds in spring are the Caulfield Guineas and the Moonee Valley Vase. That one is INTERESTING at n=10.

What Does Any of That Mean This Year?

Favourites win four in ten at best, so the market's fancy isn't a reason to back or oppose anything. In this field the market favourite is Stormy Marco at $5.40, while we rate Cormier ahead of him. A Derby favourite at that sort of price is more a bookmaker's opinion than a signal.

The long-shot side of the pattern is useful. With every recent winner priced inside the outer edge of the betting, the bottom of this field (Meet The Prince, Locked In, Cold Shower, King Winston and the like) has history against it. That's a small sample, so it is a nudge, not a rule.

Barriers cut both ways. Three of our top four, Stormy Marco, True Rebel and Murshidi, are drawn 15, 16 and 17, and the broad pattern says winners come from lower numbers. But it is a PUB STAT, and wide winners have turned up in 2024 and 2018. Our numbers already account for the wide draws, which is part of why Murshidi's chance is lower than his form alone suggests. Don't double-count it.

The Waller and Maher angle is thin evidence. Waller has Stormy Marco and True Tone, and Maher has Murshidi, Vallice and Skua, so the trainer pattern touches five runners. It is a PUB STAT with n=10, so it earns a mention and nothing else. John Allen rides Skua, and two winners from ten rides is the same story. The Caulfield pattern fits King Snitz, Vallice, Cignetti, Russian Rock and Quick Finish, who all raced there last start. Waterhouse and Bott train Cold Shower, which is a nice historical echo and not a form line.

The raw market adds up to 108.1%, not 100%: that extra is the bookmaker's margin. Market % is each runner's implied chance (1 / odds) with that margin removed, so it compares fairly with Punty %. Edge is market odds against Punty's fair odds.

Profile: Midfield · Group 1 form · First time at 2500m

Cormier is the horse we like most at 20.3%, and he gets there on the strength of his last start. He ran third in a Group 1 over 2000m at Randwick, beaten under two lengths in a field of nine, and he did it at a long price. That's a big class test passed on his recent form, and a result that suggests the market underrated him then and perhaps still does now.

The rest of the record is patchy. He's won once from seven starts, with the earlier runs including a tenth and an eighth in short-trip Group company, both sprints where he looked out of his depth. The longer trips have suited him much better. He's never been beyond 2000m, so 2500m is a question, and a three-year-old stepping up that far is always a question.

Barrier 3 and a midfield map is a handy spot. He should get a trip without needing a miracle, and with no obvious leader he can sit just off whatever goes forward. Jamie Mott takes over from the Randwick rider, which is a small question mark without being a worry. The market's $5.70 against our fair price of $4.93 gives an edge of +15.6%. He's the most likely winner, he's priced at value, and he's still only about one chance in five. The each-way bet makes sense for that reason.

Profile: Back · Group 1 placed · Wide barrier

Stormy Marco is our second-ranked runner at 15.8%, which makes him a genuine danger, and the market has him as favourite at $5.40. Our fair price is $6.34. That's an edge of -14.8%, so we think he's a good horse who is priced a little too keenly. A decent horse at a short price is still a bad bet if the price doesn't match the chance.

The form is solid. Fourth in the same Randwick Group 1 as Cormier, beaten under three lengths, and second in a Group 3 at Rosehill over 1400m before that. That's real class. He's also drawn barrier 15, and he's a back-marker, which is where the trouble lies. From out there he will need either a soft trip or a genuinely fast tempo, and our map says nobody is obviously going to supply the second.

James McDonald is a big plus in the saddle. Chris Waller's stable form is fine, if not spectacular. He's raced first-up with a win and a second, but only two runs at that stage, which is too small a sample to say much. The 2500m is another first for him. Strong horse, wide draw, short price: that combination is why he's the danger and not the pick.

True Rebel won a Group 2 at Flemington over 2040m last start, and that gives him the best local form in the field. He's won two of his four starts and placed in all four, so he's a very consistent three-year-old. We rate him 4 at 7.9%, a fair price of $12.66, and the market has him at $9.40. That gives an edge of -25.8%, so he's a little overbet.

The issue is barrier 16. He settled midfield last start from barrier 3, and he'll be a back-marker from the gate this time. Billy Egan is a sensible jockey, but out wide with 2500m to run he's going to need luck to find a hole at the turn. He's also never raced beyond 2040m, and he only started his career in September, so the experience is limited.

His best runs have come on good ground, and his record on the soft is a single third. If the track tightens up that suits him. The form looks lovely, the price isn't great, and the draw is the problem. We'd want a longer price before we got involved.

King Snitz won a Group 3 at Caulfield over 2000m last start, and he did it at a very decent price, so the market didn't see it coming. That's the only reason he's in this race, and it's a good reason. We rate him 7 at 6.3%, a fair price of $15.85, and the market has him at $14.00, which is a touch short.

He's won two of his four starts, and one of them was a maiden at Warrnambool by a margin, so the form is rising fast. Damian Lane rides well, and barrier 5 is a handy draw for a back-marker. The concern is the class jump from a Group 3 in a field of eight to a Group 1 with 17, and the soft-ground record is two starts without a win.

Murshidi is our value runner, and he's the one we find most interesting because the market has him wrong. We make him 9.0%, which is a fair price of $11.11, and the market has him at $14.00. That's an edge of +26.0%. The bookies' own chance for him is 6.6%.

The form line is the one that goes straight up. Seventh, third, second, then a win in a Listed race at Geelong over 2200m last start, and 2200m is the longest trip any of these have actually won over in a stakes race. The win was close, and the rider was told to use more care, so he may have been green in the finish. He's a progressive horse stepping into the biggest race of his life, and the form says he's still improving.

Barrier 17 is the problem. He'll be a back-marker from the widest gate, and a horse that settles last from out there needs a lot to go right. Blake Shinn has been riding with great confidence lately, and Ciaron Maher's stable is in good order, but a great jockey doesn't change the draw. He's value on our numbers and not necessarily a likely winner, and that's the difference we keep returning to. The price has to stay at $12.80 or better for us to call it value.

Vallice has run second in a Group 3 over 2000m at Caulfield, and second in a Listed race at Flemington over 1800m earlier in the month, so the form around the track is solid. He's a stablemate of Murshidi and Skua, which makes a trio for Ciaron Maher. We have him at 5.8%, ranked 8, a fair price of $17.27 against the market's $14.00, so the market likes him a little more than we do.

The issue is that he's only won once from seven starts, and the draw of 13 will make the back-marker's life tougher. He's raced keenly at times, which won't help over 2500m, and the tactics have been queried more than once. He's a place chance if things go right.

Skua ran second in the Group 2 at Flemington last start, from the front, beaten by a short margin by True Rebel. That's the best form line in the field for a front-runner, and he has the benefit of having raced at the track recently. We have him at 7.4%, ranked 5, with a fair price of $13.57 against the market's $14.00, so he's only slightly underpriced.

The problem is the shape. Our numbers say the expected pace hurts the handy types most, and he's one of them. He's drawn 12, so he'll either use petrol to cross or sit outside the leader, neither of which is ideal over 2500m. John Allen is one of the better riders in a Derby, and the trainer is in great form with several runners, but the trip is a huge step up from his earlier runs. He's won once, in a maiden, and the longer trips are unproven.

Visors go on first time and the blinkers come off, which is a significant change for a horse that's been close without winning.

Barrier 9 is a reasonable draw, and he'll settle behind the leaders, so he doesn't have the wide-gate problem. The question is the level. He's finished behind Murshidi's sort of rivals more than once, and he was injured earlier in his career, as the comments note. He's a solid chance for a place, and not much more on our numbers.

If the Track Changes

The track is rated Good 4 with showers around, and the rail is True for the entire circuit. A bit more rain could soften things, and a three-year-old's wet-track form is mostly a handful of starts. Cormier has two seconds from two heavy-track runs, which is encouraging but small. Stormy Marco is yet to win on anything but good ground. Our numbers don't swing hard on wet-track form here, so treat any change in the rating as a rough guide until the track is confirmed.

Punty's Final Word

1. #1 Cormier

Cormier is the most likely winner on our numbers, and the market's $5.70 sits above our fair $4.93, so he's value from $5.70.

2. #5 Murshidi

Murshidi is the value runner: we make him 9.0% against the market's $14.00, with barrier 17 the reason that isn't a likely winner.

3. #2 Stormy Marco

Stormy Marco is the danger. We rate him second, but at $5.40 the market already agrees.

4. #3 True Rebel

True Rebel has the best Flemington form, and a wide draw, with a price of $9.40 that's a touch short of our $12.66.
