Ten million dollars, sixteen four-year-olds, and a favourite the bookies have shortened to a price we wouldn't pay with your money or ours.
The Golden Eagle is a Group 1 for the first time in 2026, worth $10 million, run over 1500m at Randwick on a Good 4 track with the rail in the true position. It's a set-weights race for four-year-olds, so everyone carries what the scale says and the weights aren't an angle. The only real question is who gets the cleanest run.
Our numbers have No.16 Sheza Alibi on top. We make her 39.4%, a fair price of $2.54. The market has her at $1.75, which strips back to 52.6% once the bookmaker's margin is removed. She's the most likely winner. She's also the shortest price in the race by a long way, and being the most likely winner and being a good bet are two different things. Her record is 8 wins from 13 starts, she's won 4 from 4 second-up, and she's still shorter than our price. Value only arrives for us above $3.00.
The value sits with No.1 Beiwacht. We make him 18.6%, fair $5.36, against a market price of $8.20, an edge of +53.0%. He's our second-ranked runner, he's the only genuine leader, and he's also our nominated danger. That doesn't mean he's likely to win. We make him a clear second-best chance with a price that's too big. The field is 16 runners and the book sits at 108.6%, so there's plenty of margin baked in across the board.
Racing is a game of small edges and long losing runs, and a 16-horse Group 1 is the best place to see it. Even our top chance loses more often than she wins.

Most likely winner: #16 Sheza Alibi (39.4%, fair $2.54)
Best value: #1 Beiwacht (18.6%, fair $5.36)
Danger: #1 Beiwacht (18.6%, fair $5.36)
Big-price bastard we don't want knocking us out: #15 Amazing Journey (5.6%, fair $17.95)
A positive edge is not automatically a bet. Punty's actual bets come from the tips card.
How Punty Gets There
Start with Sheza Alibi. We make her 39.4%, so the fair price is $2.54. The market has her at $1.75, which is 52.6% after the margin comes out, and that gives an edge of -31.1%. A negative edge on the most likely winner is normal. It means the crowd likes her more than we do, not that she can't win. We'd need $3.00 or better before calling her value.
Now Beiwacht. We make him 18.6%, fair $5.36. The market says $8.20, or 11.2% after the margin, for an edge of +53.0%. He clears the bar we set at $6.20 comfortably. Our map doesn't love his run, which we explain below, and the price already seems to be doing the work of marking him down, probably too far. A runner can be a strong chance and value without being the one we expect to win. Here he's the second-best chance, and the gap between our price and the market's is the bigger story.
Autumn Boy is the other one worth a look: 9.1% from us, fair $10.94, market $13.50, edge +23.4%. That's a decent edge on a smaller chance, so more of a lean than a pillar.
How This Thing Probably Unfolds
On our map Beiwacht is the only horse who wants to lead, drawn barrier 9, and nobody is going to fight him for it in any serious way. Skyhook (barrier 14), Regal Award (barrier 3) and Mr Miller (barrier 8) are the on-pacers, so there's cover just off him and a couple of them will need to work to find it. Skyhook has the worst of that, drawn wide with a job to do.
Sounds like a soft lead for Beiwacht, and it is. Our map still rates his run as one of the worst in the race. A lone leader in a 16-runner Group 1 gets chased down more than the form suggests, and he's carrying the same weight as everyone else, so there's no scale cushion. Our read is a genuine tempo but not a suicidal one.
The midfield is crowded: Autumn Boy, Attica, Brave Monarch, Decorum, Night Agent, Sheza Alibi, Apocalyptic and Within The Law all sit there. That's good news for Sheza Alibi from barrier 5, who should get a trail, though our map has her run as modestly hurt because she's in a pack of runners fighting for the same patch of grass. Back in the field, Rivellino, Estremo and Platinum Pantheon are the swoopers. Our map likes Platinum Pantheon and Within The Law the most, as the shape suits horses coming from behind. Platinum Pantheon is drawn barrier 1, which is a handy place to be if he needs to sneak up the fence.
Wide barriers hurt. Decorum (barrier 12), Estremo (barrier 15) and Apocalyptic (barrier 16) are all back-half runners who'll need cover or luck. Amazing Journey's map position is unclear, so treat anything we say about its run as a guess.

The Race Has Seen Some Shit
The Golden Eagle was first run in 2019 at Rosehill, and Kolding won it for Chris Waller and Glen Boss. It's for four-year-olds only, at set weights over 1500m. It ran as a special-conditions race without black type from 2019 to 2025 and was upgraded to Group 1 for 2026. The race moved from Rosehill to Randwick in 2025.
Some patterns, with the usual health warning. Chris Waller has trained 2 of the 7 winners, Kolding and Autumn Glow. That's a PUB STAT with n=7, which means it's a nice fact for the pub and not much more. Overseas stables have won 2 of the 7 runnings, back to back, Japan's Keiji Yoshimura in 2023 and England's William Haggas in 2024. That one is labelled INTERESTING, still just n=7, though there's a mechanism: set weights for one age group make the race attractive to strong overseas four-year-olds with no penalty for international form. Mares have won 2 of the 7 runnings, Colette in 2020 and Autumn Glow in 2025, another PUB STAT with n=7.
The most useful bit might be this one. 2026 is only the second running at Randwick, with the first five at Rosehill. Course form from earlier Golden Eagles is mostly Rosehill form, which may not transfer cleanly.
One more thing worth knowing: Colette won on a Heavy 9 track in the slowest time of the seven runnings. This year's track is Good 4.
Take the Waller angle first. He has four runners in this, Beiwacht, Autumn Boy, Mr Miller and Estremo, and his two earlier winners are in the sample. It's n=7, so we're not going to treat it as a system. It does tell us the stable knows the race. Our numbers already like two of the four, Beiwacht and Autumn Boy, and they didn't need the history to get there.
On the overseas pattern, the mechanism is real but it applies to stables travelling for the race. None of the stables on our card is that kind of raider, so the pattern doesn't point at anyone this year. That's us saying there's nothing to attach it to, not that overseas horses are out of the picture in later years.
The mares pattern is thin. We don't have sex data on the field to place anyone, so we're ignoring it rather than guessing.
The Randwick point matters most for how we read track stats. Apocalyptic has won 4 of 8 at Randwick, Sheza Alibi 2 of 3, and Rivellino 3 of 9. They're good records, but only the second running of this race here means we can't lean on anything specific to the Golden Eagle. We're using track form as general Randwick form, no more. Peter Moody and Luke Nolen combined to win the 2022 running. Sheza Alibi is now trained by Moody with Katherine Coleman and ridden by Nolen, and it's a cute link, but cute links don't carry weight when the stable has 5 wins from its last 100 starts. That's an early read at best.

The raw market adds up to 108.6%, not 100%: that extra is the bookmaker's margin. Market % is each runner's implied chance (1 / odds) with that margin removed, so it compares fairly with Punty %. Edge is market odds against Punty's fair odds.
Profile: Leader · Only genuine front-runner · Barrier 9 · Strong chance + value
Our value runner and our danger, and the two aren't the same thing. We make Beiwacht 18.6%, fair $5.36, against $8.20 in the market. That's an edge of +53.0%, and the price at which we'd call him a value runner is $6.20, so he's well clear of it. He's the second-highest ranked runner in our numbers.
The form line, 2148261193, is a decent one for a Group 1 runner. He's won 4 and placed 5 times from 16 starts. At Randwick he's had 6 starts for 1 win, 2 seconds and a third. On good ground he's 3 wins from 11. He's had only 1 start at this distance and didn't win, which is the big question mark. Going to the line, a lone leader at 1500m in a 16-runner field has to run the sectionals sensibly, and our map isn't a fan of that job. He's the only one who wants to lead, but the shape still marks his run down.
Gear changes add uncertainty: the lugging bit comes off and a norton bit goes on, both first time. That could settle him or it could do nothing. We can't tell yet, and nobody outside the stable can either. Chris Waller's stable has 12 wins from its last 100 and Nash Rawiller is riding well with 17 from his last 100. Value, a strong chance, but not our most likely winner.

Skyhook has the worst of the draw among the forward runners. Barrier 14 means Chad Schofield has to cross a heap of horses to get cover, and our map rates the run as one of the more damaged in the race. We make him 6.7%, fair $14.99, against $16.50 in the market, an edge of +10.1%, which is a small positive on a small chance.
The credentials are better than the price suggests. Form of 4546121112 shows he's been winning lately. He's 1 from 1 at the distance, 4 from 10 on good tracks and 2 from 2 on heavy. First-up he's won 2 of 4. Randwick is a mixed bag: 4 starts, no wins, 2 seconds and a third. If he gets across and finds a soft position, he can run into the money. If he's caught wide with no cover, the day gets long. We're not betting on him at that price, but we respect the record.
Profile: Midfield · Barrier 4 · Blinkers off again · Chance + value
Autumn Boy is the one with the boring, reliable profile that tends to run into a place. We make him 9.1%, fair $10.94, against $13.50, an edge of +23.4%. The needs price is $12.60, so there's room above it.
He's raced 12 times for 4 wins and 4 seconds, and the recent form of 2713212827 shows a lot of 2s. That's the horse's problem and his strength: he's seldom far away and often beaten. He's won 2 from 6 on both good and soft tracks, so conditions aren't a worry. At Randwick he's 3 starts for 2 seconds and no win. The blinkers come off again, which is a pattern we've seen from this stable before, and whether it helps is an open question.
Barrier 4 gives Zac Purton options and he should find a spot midfield. Our map marks the midfield run as slightly hurt, not by much. Waller has four in the race, and Autumn Boy looks the most solid of the other three. The tips card has no bet on him, and that fits: a good price on a chance that's still only around one in eleven.
Profile: On pace · Barrier 3 · Good-track record · Needs everything
Regal Award is a handy sort drawn well at barrier 3, and our map rates his on-pace run as one of the better ones in the race. The numbers still can't get him up. We make him 1.7%, fair $59.88, and the market's $48.00, so the edge is -19.8%. He's slightly under our value mark of $68.90. He's 3 from 13 with 2 from 10 on good tracks, and the stable's run is cold, with 10 wins from its last 100 and a long-run strike below what the market expects. One start at Randwick returned a third. A fair ride gets him close to the money, not much more.

#5 Attica
Barrier 6 · J: Regan Bayliss · T: Joseph Pride · 57.5kg
Attica won two of his seven Randwick starts and hit the board in two more, so track familiarity is a real positive. Form of 1143802396 is bumpier than that suggests. We make him 2.0%, fair $50.51, against $41.00 in the market, an edge of -18.8%. Needs $58.10 to be of interest. He's 2 starts at the trip for a second and no win, so the distance isn't a worry, but the class jump to a Group 1 is. A midfield run from barrier 6 is fine, and Regan Bayliss is riding well, but the numbers see him as a make-the-numbers type.
Punty says:NEEDS EVERYTHING
#6 Brave Monarch
Barrier 7 · J: Martin Harley · T: Chris & Corey Munce · 57.5kg
Brave Monarch has won 5 of 10 and 4 of 7 on good ground, which is a strong strike rate for a horse ranked this low. The problem is class: we make him 1.1%, fair $93.46, with the market at $95.00 and an edge of +1.6%. That edge is a tiny positive on a price that doesn't mean much. Only 1 start at Randwick, no win, and the form of 5111411437 ends in a 7th. Chris and Corey Munce have been in great touch, with 18 from their last 100, so don't write him off entirely.

Decorum has won 5 of 8, and 5 of 6 on good tracks, which is excellent. He's also 3 from 3 second-up, and 2 from 3 first-up. The form of 21119114 reads well, but this is a Group 1 and our map doesn't rate barrier 12 for a midfield runner who'll need cover. We make him 2.9%, fair $33.90, against $36.00, an edge of +6.2%. He looks more like an exotics runner than a win proposition at $39.00 or better. Tim Clark has had a quiet patch, 8 winners from his last 100, and Michael Freedman also has Apocalyptic, so one of the two may be the stable's main hope.

We make him 3.0%, fair $33.44, with the market at $36.00, an edge of +7.7%. Zac Lloyd has been winning at a ridiculous rate, 26 from his last 100, which is great form and a small-sample thing to be careful with. Rivellino has won 3 of 9 at Randwick, which is a legitimate track record, but the form of 4668255489 has been poor lately and our map has him settling near the rear. We make him 1.3%, fair $74.63, against a huge $151.00 in the market, an edge of +102.3%. That edge looks big because the market price is so long, and a big edge on a tiny chance still leaves a tiny chance. K A Lees also has Night Agent. If the leaders stack up he might make some ground late, but we'd want the price to be a lot higher than it already is.

We make him 0.7%, fair $135.14, against $151.00. The edge is +11.7%, which means little on that price. Barrier 15 and a back-of-field map both work against him. Night Agent is 4 from 9 and has won the one start at this distance. The form of 710113410 is patchy, and a step up to Group 1 is the biggest step he's had. We make him 1.0%, fair $102.04, against $101.00 and an edge of -1.0%, so the market and our numbers agree he's a long shot. Tom Sherry has had a quiet run, 6 from his last 100. A midfield run from barrier 11 means he's likely to be caught wide. Not our idea of a winner.
Profile: Map unclear · Barrier 13 · Blindfold first time · Rough chance
Amazing Journey is our roughie, and the map is unclear on how he'll run, so anything we say about the shape is a guess. We make him 5.6%, fair $17.95, against $21.00 in the market, an edge of +17.0%. That's a real positive, and he's the fifth-ranked runner in our numbers. He's won 5 of 11, including 2 from 2 second-up, and the form of 1150731211 ends with three wins and a second in the last four. Gear is the unknown: the blindfold goes on first time, and we don't have a read on that. Barrier 13 isn't ideal, but Saffie Osborne is a good jockey and Chris Maher's stable has been in form, 17 from its last 100. We can't tell yet how good he is against this level, which is exactly why the price is bigger than ours.

Sheza Alibi is our most likely winner, and we're not shy about it. We make her 39.4%, a fair price of $2.54. The market has her at $1.75, 52.6% after the margin, which is a lot more confident than we are, and the edge reads -31.1%. The price at which she'd be value is $3.00. Lovely horse, bad price.
The record is huge: 8 wins, 4 seconds and a third from 13 starts, and the form of 2311111212 is a long line of 1s. She's 5 from 8 on good tracks, 2 from 3 at Randwick, and 4 from 4 second-up. Our time rating is the best in the race. All of that is why we rank her first.
The flags are real. Our map has her midfield from barrier 5, a spot where the shape marks her down because she's in the middle of a crowd. Luke Nolen's last 100 rides have produced 6 winners and the stable has 5 from its last 100, both well below what the market would expect. Those are early reads on small samples and could be noise, though they're worth keeping in mind when she's the shortest price in the race. She's a top chance, and a bad price on a top chance isn't a bet.

#17 Apocalyptic
Barrier 16 · J: Tommy Berry · T: Michael Freedman · 55.5kg
Apocalyptic has won 4 of 8 at Randwick, which is the best track record in the field, and the form of 2111224351 shows a horse who's been in the money for most of the preparation. We make him 4.0%, fair $24.69, against $24.00 in the market, an edge of -2.8%, so the market and our numbers broadly agree. The problem is barrier 16. Tommy Berry is a smart rider, but starting from the outside of a 16-runner field means a wide trip or a big early dash to find cover. Our time rating is strong, third in the field, so there's ability here. At a price that's about right, we'd leave him to the exotics players.
Within The Law has had 12 starts at Randwick for 2 wins and 4 seconds, so he's a regular who runs well here without winning much. Our map likes the shape for him, as a horse who benefits from a genuine pace, and barrier 2 is a handy draw. We make him 1.7%, fair $58.48, against $38.00, with an edge of -35.0%, which means the market is shorter than us. Bjorn Baker's stable is in form with 24 from its last 100, and Rachel King is riding well. Form of 6297532765 is mixed. A place chance at best.

If the Track Changes
The track is a Good 4 with a penetrometer reading of 5.2, rail in the true position, overcast. Nothing there suggests a heavy bias, and almost every runner has good-track form, so we're not building a wet-track case for anyone. Platinum Pantheon is the one who looks better in the soft: 8 starts, 0 wins and 5 seconds on soft ground, and 2 wins from 4 on heavy. That's a small sample, but it fits the idea that Good 4 isn't his best surface.

Questions
What distance is the Golden Eagle?
The Golden Eagle is run over 1500m at Randwick. It's a race for four-year-olds only, at set weights.
Is the Golden Eagle a Group 1 race?
Yes, from 2026. It ran as a special-conditions race without black type from 2019 to 2025 and was upgraded to Group 1 for 2026. It's worth $10 million this year.
Who is the Golden Eagle favourite in 2026?
No.16 Sheza Alibi is the market favourite at $1.75. We make her 39.4%, a fair price of $2.54, so she's our most likely winner but under the odds.
Where is the value in the Golden Eagle?
Our numbers point to No.1 Beiwacht. We make him 18.6%, fair $5.36, against $8.20 in the market, an edge of +53.0%. Value isn't the same as most likely to win, and he's not our top chance.
What will the pace be like in the Golden Eagle?
Beiwacht is the only genuine leader on our map, with Skyhook, Regal Award and Mr Miller on the pace behind him. Our read is a genuine tempo with a crowded midfield, which suits horses coming from the back half.
