Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Ashburton, head to https://punty.ai/tips/ashburton-2026-10-18
Rightio Loose Units, Ashburton on a Heavy 9 is basically the punting version of wading through treacle, so if your horse looks like it wants the ground, you've gotta be in the game. Expect leaders to get brave early, then the run home turns into a slog-fest where the classier types keep finding more. I'm keen to attack the races where the pace profile helps the main dangers, because Heavy decks punish "nice try" runs.
Punters get cute on wet tracks. They back the obvious speed and then act shocked when the last 200m is a wrestling match. Nah, today you want the runners that can either sit tough early or roll forward when everyone else is just surviving. The speed map is doing the heavy lifting, and the market is throwing a few curveballs too. I'll take the value side where the form and position line up, then sprinkle in one proper "roughie if it goes wrong for everyone else" to keep it fun.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Heavy 9, 1200m-2200m card
Rail: True
Official going: Heavy 9 (expected to play Speed vs Stamina showdown)
Weather: Fine (watch for gusts, could make it a slightly choppy ride late)
Early lane guess: True rail helps those who can keep a straight path, but on a Heavy 9 you still need a runner who stays on the bridle
Tempo profile: Genuine enough early, then fatigue takes over hard in the run home
Jockeys to follow:
Hayley Hassman: riding a big chunk of chances today, and she keeps landing in the right moments
Jack Taplin: lots of eyes on his mounts, he is going to be in the thick of it more than once
Ashlee Strawbridge: steady on this track type, good chance she gives you a real finish when others flatten
Stables to respect:
Andrew Carston (12 runners): when they fire, they do it with intent, and the horses look race-ready
L M Robinson (8 runners): consistent at building runners that handle slow conditions and don't throw in the towel
Len & Lacy Stewart (8 runners): strong spread, you'll get value throughout their races if you stay patient
Punty's take:
Ashburton on a Heavy 9 with the rail true is the kind of day where speed is gold early, then the real talent shows who can keep grinding when every stride feels heavier than the last. The tempo is genuine, so you can't just look for "best horse on paper", you've gotta look for the one that can hold position without getting dragged into a wall of traffic.
My favourite play today is where the leaders are doing the right thing, and the value horse is also getting a clean run at the right spot. In Race 1, the front-line types look set to battle, which is exactly when a well-positioned on-pace runner can nick the finish. In Race 2, I want the maiden that looks like it's already put the pieces together, because Heavy 9 maidens often come down to who settled best and who had more left in the tank.
Late in the day, the stayers and benchmark races are where the track turns nasty, and that's where you get paid for backing the horse that is actually built for slogging, not just built for a good draw. Keep your bets sensible, but don't be afraid to back the right story.
What it means for you:
Bet the map, not the vibe. If the race is set up for on-pace pressure, I want you backing the runners that can sit close without expending their whole engine early. If the field looks like it'll get strung out, then you can take a price roughie, because the race will create a finish.
Where I'm aggressive: Race 1, Race 2, Race 3, Race 5, Race 6. That's where the pace story and the market value both look like they're pointing in the same direction. Where I'm more cautious: the races with less clarity from the pre-selection locks, because on Heavy 9 you can get stitched up by one awkward trip and a wide wander.
Keep it simple for the day, three win shots early and then a multi spine that you can afford to believe in. If your roughie hits, it'll feel like you just stole chips off a mate who keeps saying "next time" like it's a lifestyle.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Trader Inn (Race 1, No.4) — $5.50
Why Follows the pace, handles Heavy 9, and the market has it priced like it should win
2 - Cocomora (Race 2, No.9) — $4.40
Why Maiden that's doing the right things under pressure, and the Heavy 9 profile suits its run style
3 - Niccita (Race 3, No.15) — $3.00
Why The best chance of the three, with the kind of gate-to-line profile you want in a wet start
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~3.80 = ~${0.00} collect
RACE-BY-RACE
Race 1 – CHAOS CHAMPION CHASE (Restricted 60)
Race type: Restricted 60, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, leaders out early, then it grinds
Punty read: Sebastiano and Trader Inn look like they're set to put heat on, with Tears Of Victory also in the mix. Heavy 9 makes early position matter, so if you're off the pace too far you'll spend the last 400m saying "why did I do that". Trader Inn is the kind of on-pace runner that can keep poking at the leaders and pick up the finish, while Tears Of Victory is the danger if the race turns into a battle of who can keep their feet.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.00 pool)
1. Trader Inn (No.4) — $6.00 / $2.15
Bet $7.00 Win, return $42.00
Prob 17.7% | Place: 45.6% | Value: 1.55x Steady since tip
Why Maps on-pace and the form says it's ready for a grind, plus market price sits right where it should
2. Tears Of Victory (No.9) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.7% | Place: 36.5% | Value: 1.35x
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. I Dunnet (No.2) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 29.5% | Value: 0.95x
Why A real chance — but at $2.15 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
Roughie: El Ultimo (No.3) — $12.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.1% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 1.59x Steady since tip
Why If the interference and interference excuses line up again, he can claw into the finish with the right timing
Race 2 – MAIDEN WAR ROOM (Mdn)
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, so the turn of foot and positioning matter more than speed fantasy
Punty read: This looks like it'll take a while to build momentum. When it's slow, Heavy 9 races turn into a "who gets clear?" situation, and who can move without being strangled. Cocomora is the one I want, sitting in the midfield with every chance to find a run. Ask Archie looks like the sort to keep grinding and hold a spot, and Benji's Boy has place claims written all over it if the field strings out then bunches at the line.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)
1. Cocomora (No.9) — $4.40 / $1.85
Bet $9.00 Each Way ($4.50W + $4.50P), return $19.80 (wins) / $8.33 (places)
Prob 18.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.10x Steady since tip
Why Handles the Heavy 9 rhythm, and the midfield setup gives it a fair shot at the finish
2. Ask Archie (No.2) — $4.20 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.3% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.18x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Benji's Boy (No.6) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.4% | Place: 35.4% | Value: 1.31x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
Roughie: Zashubo (No.10) — $10.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.68x Steady since tip
Why If the pace stays awkward and the run opens late, he can surprise as the price keeps its nerve
Race 3 – MAIDEN FLICKER (Mdn)
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, so lane position and late pick-ups decide it
Punty read: This is the kind of maiden where the winner is usually the one that looks most professional in the final 200m. Niccita draws to get a run on a map that suggests she can be part of the finish without needing miracles. Autumn Breeze is right there with the right setup too, and Pure Champagne is the "if it gets messy" type if the leaders stop fighting. The Heavy 9 makes it a longer sprint in disguise, so don't overreact to earlier effort, watch who keeps pushing through the slog.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Niccita (No.15) — $3.30 / $1.50
Bet $15.00 Win, return $49.50
Prob 23.9% | Place: 47.6% | Value: 1.23x Steady since tip
Why Best chance in the race, and the short-price profile fits the wet-track grind
2. Autumn Breeze (No.1) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.15x
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Pure Champagne (No.13) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.8% | Place: 34.9% | Value: 0.60x
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
Roughie: Batu (No.3) — $12.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.0% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 1.31x Steady since tip
Why If it's a messy midfield battle and tempo doesn't suit the front, he can sneak into the bracket
Race 4 – DEEP WATER 3YO (Gluyas Motor Group 3yo)
Race type: Open, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, so the run to the line is all about surviving the heavy and getting clear
Punty read: Race 4 is a bit of a "three horses and a whole lot of hard luck" situation. Hezzarocstar looks the most reliable type, Omega Sprint has the raw early speed look, and Miss Twinkle is the danger if she lands closer than expected. On Heavy 9, 3yos can get lost in the slog, so I'm backing the ones who have shown they can handle pressure rather than just show up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($0.00 pool)
1. Hezzarocstar (No.1) — $0.00 / $0.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.6% | Place: 57.2% | Value: 1.00x

Prob 10.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.00x
Why He makes my shortlist, not my betting slip. Tracked — if he salutes, we'll wear it and the record shows it.
Race 5 – SEEDS OF TROUBLE (Mdn)
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, leaders out and it stays tight early
Punty read: Into The Circle is the obvious on-pace focal point, and on a Heavy 9 at 1200m that can be deadly. The trick is that maidens sometimes switch off after hitting the front, but the form suggests this one is pushing through. Arvana and Noivern are the live dangers, especially if the track is playing a little favourably to those who can keep rolling without getting stoked too early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Into The Circle (No.5) — $3.60 / $1.60
Bet $15.00 Win, return $54.00
Prob 28.2% | Place: 54.1% | Value: 1.56x Steady since tip
Why Maps to lead and it's a value price for a wet-track maiden at this trip
2. Arvana (No.15) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.1% | Place: 45.1% | Value: 0.80x
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Noivern (No.1) — $8.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 32.3% | Value: 0.74x
Why A real chance — but at $2.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
Roughie: Gotta Cut Loose (No.13) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.6% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 1.10x Steady since tip
Why Roughie path is a late sprint from the back if the leaders soften and the ground keeps favouring straight movers
Race 6 – STAIRS TO HEAVEN STAYERS (Restricted 60)
Race type: Restricted 60, 2200m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, heavy track, so class and staying power rule
Punty read: This is a 2200m Heavy 9 slog, so I want the ones that can handle pressure late without needing a miracle. Honor Mission is the main one, sitting in the race when the pace slows then lifting when others are just drifting. Suavetta is the other one to keep honest because she's built for these long, grinding finishes, while Unwoke is the less flashy but can still pick up pieces if the race stays tactical.
Top 3 + Roughie ($4.50 pool)
1. Honor Mission (No.3) — $4.50 / $1.80
Bet $4.50 Win, return $20.25
Prob 24.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.57x Steady since tip
Why Best staying profile for the heavy grind and it's priced like it should do the business

Prob 16.1% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 1.12x

Prob 11.6% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.86x
Why A real chance — but at $2.00 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
Roughie: Dioressence (No.2) — $9.50 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.8% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.38x Steady since tip
Why Roughie route is if the race is slow enough to set up a late surge from off the pace
Race 7 – Bm65 BENCH BRAWL (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, so speed holds the key at this short trip
Punty read: This is a "who can keep their spot after the first crack" race. Arctic Jewel and I Am Nutz look like they can be prominent enough to avoid getting trapped in heavy traffic. Brutal Riff and Grove Street are the ones who can jump up and make it messy, especially if the pace turns into a run-off.
Top 3 + Roughie ($0.00 pool)

Race 8 – CATERING CHAOS (Restricted 60)
Race type: Restricted 60, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, plenty of room for winners who can travel and then angle
Punty read: This one is about who gets the right pocket under a true Heavy 9. Hey Dana and Taimate Staar look like they'll be in the right parts of the race, with Aishiteru and Anaroa as place-ready dangers. On this surface, the "clean trip" horse will outpay the "best line in the form" horse.

Race 9 – Bm75 BATTLE (Bm75)
Race type: Benchmark 75, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, so the front and the stalkers matter at 1600
Punty read: This race shapes like it's going to reward the horses that can keep pressing without getting cooked. Powerofpersuasion and Jack Crabb are your main two to respect, with Ikidunot the value threat if it gets the right run position. Heavy makes it a sprinty 1600, so if you're too far back early, you'll be doing it the hard way.

Race 10 – Bm65 BARNSTORMER (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, so positions and timing are everything
Punty read: Speed Dial looks like the one to keep on side because it's the kind of horse that can sit in the right spot then keep fighting. Graffiti Artist and Tulsa Turnaround are the next dangers, with Heartbreaker the type that can lift if the race compresses. Heavy 9 means this becomes a long battle, so late positioning matters more than flashy early sections.

SEQUENCE LANES, SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
EARLY QUADDIE (R3–R6)
Smart: 15,1 / 9,2,6 / 15,1,13 / 3,8,1 (27 combos x $0.00 = $0.00) — 30% flexi
Punty's take: Two legs (Race 3 and Race 6) are reasonably tight, but Race 4 and Race 6 still need coverage because Heavy 9 punishes trips.
5) BIG 6 (R5, R10)
Smart: (Race 5) 5 / (Race 6) 3,8 / (Race 7) 3,2,1,4 / (Race 8) 10,8,6 / (Race 9) 4,2,6 / (Race 10) 6,7,8 (192 combos x $0.00 = $0.00) — 30% flexi
Punty's take: It's wide enough to celebrate a hit, but Big 6 is always a numbers game, so treat it like a party, not a funeral.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - The wet track pecking order is midfield bias.
On Heavy 9, the worst thing you can be is trapped in traffic. The races today that suit my plays are the ones where the chosen horses can sit close without getting buried, then keep running when others hit the wall.
2 - Watch the "on-pace but value priced" profiles.
Trader Inn and Into The Circle both look priced like they should just be "around it", but the map and the heavy condition combo says they can actually win, especially if leaders are made to work early.
3 - Maiden races on Heavy 9 reward professionalism.
When a maiden is already showing it can handle Heavy and keep finding, it usually turns into the kind of win you remember longer than you should. That's why Niccita and Into The Circle are my anchors.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Alright legends, Heavy 9 turns every race into a grind, so back the ones who look like they can keep moving while the rest are just surviving. If your first bet lands, you'll feel like you cheated the ledger. Now go have a crack, and keep it respectful with your bankroll. Gamble Responsibly.
