Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Caulfield, head to https://punty.ai/tips/caulfield-2026-29
Rightio Loose Units, Caulfield on a Soft 7 with the rail out 4m and rain hanging around like your ex who still has your hoodie, we're in for speed in the slop, but only if you're in the first act. The straight's got a tiny bit of a headwind, so the sniff off the leader matters, and the closers need everything to go their way. Translation, be on-pace early, be picky late, and when the market acts like a bloke who just found a free parma, pay attention.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Soft 7, 10-1700m card
Rail: Out 4m Entire Circuit
Official going: Soft 7 (expected to play Speed vs Grab)
Weather: Partly cloudy, 8°C, humidity 90%, wind 9km/h WSW, rain since 9am (watch for Sloppy straight play)
Early lane guess: Bias to leaders and the stalking lanes, inside turns matter less than your ability to hold position through the kick
Tempo profile: Genuine enough early to test the field, but Soft 7 means it stretches out late so the better-balanced on-pace runners finish hardest
Jockeys to follow:
Blake Shinn: loves a lead-up role on wet-ish tracks, and he'll put his horses where the ground can be saved
Damian Lane: sharp at timing his run, and he's deadly when the race goes to a plan
James McDonald: patient hands, but he gets involved when it tightens up
Stables to respect:
C J Waller (approx 0 runners listed): keeps turning the key, and his pattern in these grades is always "show up with a plan"
Liam Howley (approx 0 runners listed): nimble prep work, often finds the right spot when the track has opinions
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (approx 0 runners listed): the "fit and dangerous" crew, especially when the pace doesn't fall apart
Punty's take: Caulfield on a Soft 7 is like a pub quiz where the hard questions all show up in the last round. The early speed does the damage, and because the wind is up the straight, the horse that's still got something at the turn is the one you want. I'm backing on-pace, especially in races where the map says "no running on faith".
The other thing, the market movements are doing a lot of talking today. When prices firm like they're being hunted, it usually means someone's found a gear/trip tweak that's going to work right now. I've built the card around that vibe, and I'm not pretending it's all luck. We've got a Big 3 spine that should hit races where runners are favoured by position, not just by hope.
What it means for you: If you're betting like a tourist today, you'll get taken to the cleaners by the first-run chaos. Bet the on-pace stories, protect the leaders, and don't get greedy in wide, off-the-map runners unless you're on a proper roughie angle.
The winners I like most are the ones that can either lead or sit just off them without getting boxed. When the race goes genuine, Soft 7 doesn't forgive soft trips. So my game plan is simple, back the ones that can stay in rhythm, then take a roughie when the pace collapses a fraction and the finishing burst turns into a wave.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Sass Appeal (Race 10, No.11) — $2.92
Why Front-running weapon, and even when the race gets messy, it's the kind that keeps finding the line.
2 - Jimmysstar (Race 8, No.2) — $4.35
Why Soft-track proven and drawn to land near the action, this is the "hold it together" type.
3 - Oliveanotherday (Race 6, No.3) — $2.46
Why Pace map loves it, and it's set up to be in the right spot when the sprint gets decided.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~31.00 = ~$310 collect
Race 1 – Aushorse (Bm78)
Race type: Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, on-pace advantage through the middle, Soft 7 suits runners who don't get stuck behind fat traffic
Punty read: Davida and Stealth Of Night look like the ones setting the early tempo, and Soft 7 makes it a "grind to the turn, sprint from there" sort of affair. Butternut Princess has the form that says she can hit the line, and with blinkers first time and Melham/Coleman stakes, she's the danger if the pace stays honest. Tarvue is the kind of runner that can explode if the leaders get swallowed, but most of the time she's chasing through a queue that costs too much ground.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Davida (No.1) — $4.35 / $1.80
Bet $14.00 Win, return $60.90
Prob 22.9% | Place: 60.0% | Value: 1.22x
Why Barrier 7 with on-pace speed, she's built for this track texture and she's got legitimate excuses she can erase.
2. Stealth Of Night (No.3) — $5.50 / $2.00
Bet $5.00 Place, return $10.00
Prob 16.9% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.14x
Why On pace and comes in with a run pattern that suits Soft 7, plus the market has backed it previously so it's not just a hope ticket.
3. Butternut Princess (No.5) — $5.35 / $2.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.0% | Place: 48.0% | Value: 0.92x
Why Blinkers first time, and she might be the one who sneaks into the finish when traffic breaks, but the price edge isn't there for a straight play.
Roughie: Salizou (No.11) — $10.25 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.00x
Why If the pace collapses even a bit, the back-half surge can steal a place.
Race 2 – Sportsbet Fixed Odds Exotics (Bm78)
Race type: Handicap, 1800m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, leaders get a say, runners need position early to go long
Punty read: This is a stay-smooth handicap where "in the first two waves" is gold. Virtuous Circle is in trouble with gear chatter, but when Makdane or Amleto land closer than expected, they'll make the race pay for patience. Jenni Multabella is the standout value on the place ledger, but she's also the kind that can cop a traffic stop and still run on for a cheque. Federer is the roughie I can live with because his style doesn't require the win early, he just needs one tempo shift and he's in business.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Jenni Multabella (No.14) — $3.35 / $1.55
Bet $10.00 Win, return $33.50
Prob 23.2% | Place: 56.9% | Value: 0.97x
Why Soft 7 suits, and from this map, the run home is where you want to be with a horse that can soak up work.
2. Blue Willow (No.15) — $4.70 / $1.90
Bet $5.00 Place, return $9.50
Prob 15.5% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.91x
Why Wide enough to keep momentum but still close enough to benefit from a genuine tempo.
3. Makdane (No.2) — $6.70 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 0.95x
Why He's the type to grab a spot if the pace goes on too long, but it's borderline where the price lands.
Roughie: Federer (No.8) — $9.70 / $3.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.9% | Place: 29.5% | Value: 1.21x
Why If they go too fast early, he's the sort who'll be rolling when others are stopping.
Race 3 – Brad Masters Plumbing Hcp (2000m)
Race type: Handicap, 2000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, late fitness matters, backmarkers can hit if the speed stays real
Punty read: Darkbonee is the weird one here, because he's short odds yet our interest is more about value shape and how the race should run. Litzdeel and Shockletz look like the two that can take advantage if the leaders go hard enough for long enough. Star Of India is a sneaky danger too, but you want to be sure he doesn't get stuck behind the wrong kind of pace pressure. See That Storm has the profile for a place ping, especially if the sprint train starts to bunch late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Darkbonee (No.10) — $2.97 / $1.45
Bet $7.50 Win, return $22.28
Prob 18.5% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.67x
Why Backmarker that still finds enough, and on a genuine tempo he can sneak into the right spot to run on.
2. Saint George (No.2) — $6.20 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.03x
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Litzdeel (No.8) — $8.20 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.6% | Place: 28.4% | Value: 1.16x
Why Norton bit first time and a nice pace set-up, but the safer value route is limited today.
Roughie: Shockletz (No.14) — $10.25 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.9% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.37x
Why If the race opens up late, he's got the sort of profile to do damage without needing to win early.
Race 4 – Hygain (Bm84)
Race type: Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, but it's a sprint race in disguise, position is everything
Punty read: Cruiserweight is the one I keep coming back to, because the map and the soft conditions suit a runner who can control or sit right on it. Porter is value if he gets his run, because when he lands in the right spot, he's very hard to run down. Stylish is the other danger who can pounce if the on-pace group starts braking too soon. Itazura and Victorious Spirit both have profiles that work, but they need the trip to be clean, and today that's not a given.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Cruiserweight (No.19) — $2.59 / $1.32
Bet $10.50 Win, return $27.20
Prob 20.7% | Place: 56.6% | Value: 0.76x
Why The on-pace advantage lines up perfectly, and Soft 7 only increases how important it is to stay balanced and close.
2. Home Rule (No.2) — $8.75 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.6% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.19x
Why A real chance — but at $2.50 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Porter (No.9) — $12.25 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 25.2% | Value: 1.61x
Why Huge value if you catch him at the front of the queue, just not enough place safety.
Roughie: Stylish (No.4) — $10.50 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 26.8% | Value: 1.19x
Why If pace looks like it's slowing early, she can hit the line in that gap like a taxi doing the dash.
Race 5 – HKJC World Pool Courtza Stakes (1200m)
Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Hot pace expected, with speed favoured, but Soft 7 means it's about who still has grip at the 100m
Punty read: Shadhavar is the battler at the front, Custom is the place leverage dream, and Photograph is the kind of value pick that can do it late if there's enough pace to melt the field. Wrote To Arataki and Proved are genuine tempo setters, and that can either carve up the finish or bring the closers into play. The key is whether the leaders are still rolling in the straight, because Soft 7 punishes tired legs hard.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Shadhavar (No.6) — $2.98 / $1.45
Bet $10.50 Win, return $31.29
Prob 22.7% | Place: 68.8% | Value: 0.80x
Why Fast early, and with a wet-ish track the horse that's still got pace at the right time is the one you want.
2. Custom (No.11) — $6.50 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.5% | Place: 54.6% | Value: 1.19x
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Photograph (No.12) — $11.75 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 35.2% | Value: 1.47x
Why Big finishing style, and if the pace goes on, she can slice through.
Roughie: Wrote To Arataki (No.3) — $10.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.11x
Why When it's hot, sometimes you need the leader who keeps finding answers, not the one who waits.
Race 6 – The Quayclean Heath (1100m)
Race type: Open, 1100m
Map & tempo: Short sprint, moderate pace, the leaders get first crack, but Soft 7 changes the grip in the last 100m
Punty read: It's a "who's quickest out of the corner" race. Oliveanotherday is the one who should be positioned early and keep running, Bridal Waltz is the other speed threat, and War Machine is the value-looking on-pace type. Recommendation is the danger if the leaders tire and he's in that sweet spot behind them. Inkaruna has the kind of steady build that can grab a place if the sprint turns into a scramble.
Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)
1. Oliveanotherday (No.3) — $2.46 / $1.20
Bet $6.50 Win, return $15.99
Prob 25.4% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.71x
Why On pace with a Soft-track rhythm, and at 1100m, rhythm wins more often than tricks.
2. Bridal Waltz (No.9) — $4.50 / $1.65
Bet $2.00 Place, return $3.30
Prob 24.8% | Place: 48.7% | Value: 1.26x
Why Map says she's in the right lane, and on this track, once she hits the straight, she doesn't stop quickly.
3. War Machine (No.1) — $6.85 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 35.9% | Value: 1.15x
Why He can go close if he gets clear air, but value depends on timing, not just talent.
Roughie: Recommendation (No.4) — $10.75 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.6% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.17x
Why If the leaders soften, he can be the one who lifts over the top without needing a perfect run.
Race 7 – Ive > McNeil Stakes (1200m)
Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow-ish pace, so if they don't sprint, the best turn-footers can dominate late
Punty read: This looks like a race where you can get caught thinking it'll stay slow and then it turns into a sprint duel halfway down the straight. Seize The Day and Unit Five are the on-pace faces, American Eagle is in the pocket, and Aethera is the kind that can flash if there's room. The dangerous bit is that slow pace gives everyone hope, and in Soft 7, hope can turn into a stumble. That's why I'm leaning into the top two that can keep their momentum.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Seize The Day (No.1) — $5.60 / $2.10
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $29.40 (wins) / $11.03 (places)
Prob 19.8% | Place: 55.7% | Value: 1.33x
Why He's got on-pace intent and the right temperament for a Soft track where you want to avoid being stuck too far back.
2. Unit Five (No.2) — $4.65 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.7% | Place: 58.5% | Value: 1.10x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. American Eagle (No.9) — $4.50 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.0% | Place: 57.1% | Value: 0.86x
Why He's capable, but the value is thin relative to the other lanes today.
Roughie: Confederation (No.5) — $10.25 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 1.28x
Why If the pace tilts and the race opens up late, he can be the one that grabs a cheque off a mid-pack roll.
Race 8 – Stow Storage Memsie Stakes (1400m)
Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, on-pace still holds the advantage, and Soft 7 helps the horses that can keep pressure without burning out
Punty read: This is the "big performers only" vibe. Jimmysstar looks like a proper on-pace grinder and should get the chance to control position. Cosmic Crusader is the value-ish pace runner that can keep going if the race doesn't turn into a slow-motion parade. Angel Capital is a wildcard upside, because when she gets the right trip, she can run right through the line. Autumn Boy is there for the place split if it turns into a scrambling finish.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)
1. Jimmysstar (No.2) — $4.35 / $1.80
Bet $20.00 Win, return $87.00
Prob 25.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.28x
Why Track and distance profile screams, and the map says she's not stuck, she's in the race.
2. Cosmic Crusader (No.7) — $5.35 / $2.00
Bet $4.00 Place, return $8.00
Prob 16.2% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.98x
Why If the pace holds, she's got enough punch to keep lifting, not just plod.
3. Angel Capital (No.5) — $8.40 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.40x
Why Value is there, but the safest play is to let the Win/Place lanes do the heavy lifting.
Roughie: Autumn Boy (No.9) — $9.75 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.2% | Place: 35.1% | Value: 1.13x
Why If someone blows up early and the race bunches, she can poke through for a slice.
Race 9 – Chandon Heatherlie Stakes (1700m)
Race type: Open, 1700m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, so staying power and clean running become the winning formula
Punty read: Yellow Jersey is the front-running case, and on this track model, "lead and survive" can be the theme. First Chorus is the interesting one, First-time blinkers that can sharpen timing and put him in the right spot. Barnavara is a real value danger if the speed stays real and the last 300m turns into a sprint for position. Zahrann is the roughie type, comes at you late if he's got room, but he needs the race to open up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Yellow Jersey (No.10) — $2.36 / $1.32
Bet $15.00 Win, return $35.40
Prob 18.0% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.52x
Why Pace profile suits and she's priced like she's supposed to be the one to hold them.
2. First Chorus (No.16) — $7.45 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.5% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.23x
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Barnavara (No.7) — $14.50 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 28.5% | Value: 1.61x
Why It's a value upset chance, but you need everything to go right.
Roughie: Zahrann (No.14) — $13.00 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.32x
Why If the leaders tire and it becomes a late hit, he's the sort that can sneak a cheque.
Race 10 – Evergreen Turf (Bm100)
Race type: Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, sprint to the line, on-pace runners have the advantage if they don't get stuck
Punty read: Sass Appeal is the market's favourite for a reason, but today I'm not just chasing the short price, I'm chasing the right kind of run. Ten Commandments is the proper follow-up because he can land handy and not fade too soon. Another Wil is a wild card if the pace is a touch soft early and he gets first run through the gaps. Storm Leopard is the roughie who can hit the line when the others start chopping.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Sass Appeal (No.11) — $2.92 / $1.45
Bet $14.00 Win, return $40.88
Prob 26.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.91x
Why This is a lead-in-spot type race, and he's built for the Caulfield sprint pressure.
2. Ten Commandments (No.12) — $5.75 / $2.10
Bet $5.00 Place, return $10.50
Prob 15.1% | Place: 48.8% | Value: 1.02x
Why He fits the tempo and he's the sort that can grab a place even if the race gets tight in the last 200m.
3. Another Wil (No.1) — $7.95 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.97x
Why Solid outside chance, but the place value is too thin for the stake.
Roughie: Storm Leopard (No.13) — $9.05 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 31.2% | Value: 0.98x
Why If the pace softens late, he can run through and make a mess of the trifecta bases.
SEQUENCE LANES
EARLY QUADDIE (R3–R6)
Smart: 10,2,14,8 / 19,2,4,9 / 6,11,12,3 / 3,9,1,4 (256 combos x $0.20 = $50.00) -- 20% flexi
One-line commentary: Four open lanes in a Soft 7 card, this is entertainment with a heartbeat, wide legs needed.
QUADDIE (R7–R10)
Smart: 2,9,1,5 / 2,7,9,5 / 10,16,7,14 / 11,12,1,13 (256 combos x $0.20 = $51.20) -- 20% flexi
One-line commentary: Still lots of chaos races, but the last two legs have the kind of map that can hold together if it hits.
BIG 6 (R5–R10)
Smart: 6,11,12,3 / 3,9,1,4 / 2,9,1,5 / 2,7,9,5 / 10,16,7,14 / 11,12,1,13 (4096 combos x $0.00 = $5.00) -- 0% flexi
One-line commentary: Six legs means six chances to get stitched up, still it's built off the strongest legs and the best on-pace lanes.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Wet track, dry rules
Caulfield Soft 7 rewards runners who can stay in rhythm, the straight headwind makes it harder for pure finishers who are forced wide early.
2 - Watch the "first act" runners
When the pace is genuine, place value comes from horses that can sit just off it, not from the ones that need a miracle turn of foot from the clouds.
3 - The value trap is the "too short" winner
Favourite-priced types can win, but the better angle is when the race shape forces everyone else to pay for position while the shorty just does the job.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
If the race shape matches the map, we feast. If it doesn't, we still back the horses that can survive Soft 7 without turning into passengers. Gamble Responsibly.
