Rightio Loose Units, foggy opener, Soft 6, and a rail that's +3m entire, so expect the track to do what it always does at Grafton, make honest horses look naughty and naughty horses look like legends. Today's card is pacey enough to give the front markers a crack, but it's also wet enough that any gap you see early is a gap you're gonna pay for late if you're too stubborn. So get your bets in early, don't overthink it, and try not to chase the dream when the dream's drifted to the car park.

2am thoughts: the tempo profile is Slow Pace early, Genuine Pace in the middle, then it turns into a "who wants it more" sort of afternoon. If you're with me, we're backing the ones that can either land in the right spot early or run on through the mud like they've got a personal beef with the finish line.

3am prayers: I've built a spine with my Big 3 winners across Races 2, 3, and 5. If you've only got beer money for one kind of wager, make it that multi. Then we add quaddie lanes for the chaos enjoyers, and keep the rest clean with top-3 plus one roughie each race.

Punty's take:

Grafton on Soft 6 is like a slow song that somehow still starts fights in the dancefloor. The fog makes it feel mysterious early, but once they get rolling, you'll notice who has the better rhythm. In the opener (Race 1, slow pace), I'm not looking for the "flash" horse, I'm looking for the one who can make a decision with clear galloping room, because with 1206m and mud, those little holds-up costs you a position you never get back.

Then Race 2 turns into your "hang on tight" maiden plate. With Genuine Pace floating around and a leader who wants to make it a race, the danger is overcommitting to the wrong lane. I'm all-in on Divine Mandate because she ticks the boxes for settling and then being there when the tempo gets sorted. Race 3 is where the card flexes, because you've got a proper Class 1 contest with a bunch of runners that can run on, but only a couple can actually win without needing luck roulette. My play there is Mongolian Spring, and I'm expecting it to be a case of "front foot first, then bully the line".

Race 5 is the long-form grind, and that's where Soft 6 punishes indecision. Righteous is your kind of horse, the sort that just keeps finding, even when the field gets strung out and the breathing starts to matter. Race 4 and Race 6 are the trap races though, because favourites can win by getting the perfect run, and soft-ground races love making you look silly for thinking "how could it miss". That's why we're going top-3, then roughie, and staying disciplined.

What it means for you:

If you're betting through the day, don't get cute early. In Race 1 and Race 4, the track is forgiving for place money if you land near the right lane, but win betting needs the race to unfold nicely. So: Win when it's a clear shape, Place when it's a safe finishing run, and Roughie when the market is playing hide and seek.

My aggressions today are Race 2 and Race 5 in particular. Race 2 is your multi anchor, Divine Mandate looks like it can control the race story. Race 5 is a staying contest on Soft 6, and Righteous has the profile to keep going when others start borrowing speed from their future. Race 3 is the pivot of the Big 3 multi, with Mongolian Spring lining up as the "even if it's messy, I still run on" type.

For lanes: we're putting Quaddie into the mix from Races 4 to 7, but we're doing it with smart coverage, not gambling your house deposit on a Wide-Open-Wide-Open-Wide-Open death march. Still, it's a quaddie, it's gonna hurt a little either way, so at least let's hurt on purpose, with a plan.

Punty read: This one's a slow cooker. When the pace is crawling, the race becomes a positioning contest, and those first half-dozen strides decide who gets clear air later. Noadiah looks like the one who can sit around midfield and then find a run when everyone else is busy having a think. Star Of Winston has the talent and the recent excuses line up, it's just whether she gets the galloping room. Airhawk brings serious gear changes first-up, so if it jumps and relaxes, it can sneak into the finish at a price, but I'm keeping it to watchlist for win. On Soft 6, fog, and a slow tempo, I want the runners that either get a clear look early or can tolerate congestion without losing all their momentum.

Punty read: This is the kind of maiden where the leaders set the tone and the field spends the whole race deciding whether to chase. Lucky Crimson is out there wanting to lead, and Wind Blast has the "let's be handy" vibe. So I'm looking for the runner that doesn't panic, sits in the right strip, and pounces when the tempo firms up. Divine Mandate is the one. The price says "easy", but I'm not betting it like it's a lottery ticket, I'm betting it like it's a race. So Sain and Pearl Of Sicily are the main place dangers if the winner tips out early.

Punty read: This is a proper C1 tussle, and it's gonna be about who's got the engine for Soft 6 and who can keep finding after 1000m starts to feel like 2000m. Mongolian Spring is the leader-type that should get a role early, and that matters a lot when the ground is holding. Sinfull is the other big threat, because she can race in the thick of it and then keep building through the line. Drahomira has the value angle, and if she settles clean, she's got the best finishing look of the mid-pack. The rest are there to make up the numbers, unless they get a luck run.

Monaco Flyer is the standout early speed and should be hard to get past if he's comfortable early. Copenhagen Cat and Set To Prophet are the stalking types that will punish you if you get sucked into the wrong pocket. Youcompleteme has that staying-with-it vibe and can run on through the mid-stages. The main danger with short races is being too brave, so I'm spreading it just enough, then letting the right runners carry the day.

But the main narrative is a staying grind, and the one who can handle the grind wins, simple.

On Soft 6 at Grafton, saving ground is good until it turns into being stuck behind tired traffic. If you see horses wheeling wide in the straight, don't panic, it might just be the only way to keep momentum.
