Rightio Loose Units, Heavy 9 at the 'baran means we're not here for a beauty parade - we're here to find horses that can paddle, hold a spot, and keep their heads above the slop when the whips come out. This card's got a bit of everything: a couple of shorties you can trust, a few market movers worth respecting, and a proper quaddie that can still bite you in the backside if you try to get too clever.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Coonabarabran, 900m to 1600m card
Rail: True
Official going: Heavy 9, expected to play a touch leader/on-pace friendly early, but stamina and wet-track manners will decide the back end
Weather: Partly cloudy, 11°C, humidity 86%, wind 13km/h N - watch for a cold, gluey surface and late fatigue
Early lane guess: Inside-to-middle lanes for the first couple; if you're not on or near the speed, you're asking for a miracle
Tempo profile: The sprints look honest, the mile races look tactical-to-sloggy, and the on-pacers should get every chance if they handle the mud
Jockeys to follow:
Ben Looker - keeps landing on the right rides and knows how to nurse a horse through a wet deck without overcooking it.
Jake Pracey-Holmes - strong through the middle stages and handy when the map is messy, which is half this card.
Ms Mikayla Weir - keeps popping up on live chances and can pinch a race when the tempo lets her ride cold.
Stables to respect:
Brett Thompson (6 runners) - got a stack of darts in the board and more than one of them are getting serious market attention.
Liam Ruddy (3 runners) - Billabong and Euphoric Miss are the obvious blokes, and the yard isn't just here for a picnic.
Kylie Kennedy (3 runners) - has a couple of runners that can sneaky-up on this wet day if the race shape gives them a sniff.
Punty's take: This is the sort of meeting where the first horse into a rhythm can nick a couple of lengths and never give them back. Heavy 9 on a true rail means you want runners with a bit of wet-ground grunt and a map that doesn't leave them bailed up behind a wall of mud. Race 1 and Race 3 are the sort of sprints where the front-half horses can make the game look simple, while the 1600m races are where the slog starts and the pretenders get found out.
The market's already giving you a couple of clues. Villainess has been smashed in the betting, Freedom To Roam keeps firming, and It's A Written is getting its share of attention too - but don't go blindly following the smoke like some mug in a karaoke bar. The roughies worth a second look are the ones with the wet form, a workable map, and a jockey who's not going to get trapped in the mud with a stupid grin on their face.
What it means for you: Keep the bets sensible and let the race shape do the heavy lifting. The day leans on a clear Big 3 spine, but the quaddie is still a proper sicko's ticket because the back half of the card has a couple of open races where one missed kick can absolutely hose you. I like the sprints to be decided by who handles the surface and gets the first crack at the fence, while the 1600m races are where you protect yourself with the right value runners, not the ones simply wearing the shortest price.
Don't get greedy in the maidens just because the form guide has a shiny favourite on top. Heavy tracks love a bit of chaos, and when the ground turns to custard the horse that maps sweetly can look like Phar Lap while the flashy one never goes a yard. Bank on the ones with the right map, the right ride, and the right wet-track story. Everything else is just decorative crap.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Billabong (Race 1, No.1) - $1.79
Why He's the one with the map edge, gets on the speed, and looks the horse they all have to run down if the heavy ground doesn't flatten him.
2 - Chappolicious (Race 3, No.5) - $1.64
Why Short enough to make you sweat, but the map says he gets every chance to control it and keep the wet-track grinders at bay.
3 - Freedom To Roam (Race 4, No.6) - $3.00
Why Firming for a reason, maps in the first wave, and this is exactly the sort of slog where a handy on-pace run is pure gold.
Multi (all three to win): $10 x ~8.81 = ~$88.07 collect
Race 1 - Mud Missile Maiden
Race type: Maiden, 900m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed; Billabong leads, Euphoric Miss and Rubilicious sit handy, and the rest are trying not to get left in the wake
Punty read: Short-course heavy-track maidens are all about who can jump clean, hold a spot and not panic when the mud starts flicking up. Billabong is the obvious boss here - the map is his friend, the conditions are no drama, and even though the price is skinny, he's the one they all have to collar. Euphoric Miss is the one that can stalk and maybe turn the screws late if the leader overdoes it, while Parissident is the kind of nasty little place prospect that can clunk into a minor spot if the front pair start singing too loudly. Rubilicious is the big-odds type you can see running a cheeky race if the speed melts, but on the numbers and the map, this still looks like Billabong's dance.
Top 3 + Roughie (15.00 pool)
1. Billabong (No.1) - $1.79 / $1.25
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$30.00
Prob 37.6% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 0.79x
Why He maps to lead, has the right wet-track footprint, and if Kody Nestor gets him into stride early he'll be awfully hard to toss.
2. Euphoric Miss (No.6) - $3.05 / $1.37
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 32.7% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.13x
Why Handy enough to get every chance, and if Billabong overcooks it she can swoop into the frame, but the ticket's already loaded on the top line.
3. Parissident (No.8) - $6.20 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.1% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.68x
Why One of those sneaky-on-the-map types who can sneak into the minors if the leaders don't get the last call.
Roughie: Rubilicious (No.9) - $15.75 / $4.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.8% | Place: 28.9% | Value: 0.67x
Why Would need the front two to turn it into a war of attrition, then she'd be the one coming through late like a stray bullet.
Race 2 - The Soggy Setup
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo on paper, with Villainess and Abated Breath not wanting to give much away and the wide runners needing luck early
Punty read: This is the sort of maiden where the market's already had a proper sniff at Villainess, and you can see why - the gear changes and the money say the yard expects a lift. Abated Breath gets blinkers for the first time, which is a classic 'wake the bugger up' move, and on this sort of wet, grinding card a horse that finds focus can absolutely jump forward. Meteor Mist looks the least attractive of the main players once you factor in the current setup, while Sunset Drive is a market watcher only - the money's poked its nose in, but the map still says it needs things to fall apart. This one looks more like a tactical maiden than a brute-force slog, so the key is who settles without getting trapped in the mud.
Top 3 + Roughie (11.00 pool)
1. Villainess (No.10) - $3.28 / $1.40
Bet $6.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$6.50
Prob 26.1% | Place: 46.3% | Value: 0.92x
Why The money's been there, the gear's been fiddled with, and if Donovan Dillon can slot her in without too much stuffing around she looks the one they've come for.
2. Abated Breath (No.1) - $4.15 / $1.65
Bet $4.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$4.95
Prob 13.9% | Place: 34.5% | Value: 1.18x
Why Blinkers first time is a proper 'wake up and race' move, and the inside gate gives him a chance to land on a decent piece of ground.
3. Meteor Mist (No.8) - $4.75 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.9% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 0.81x
Why Has the talent to be in the finish, but the setup doesn't scream out loud enough to get aggressive.
Roughie: By Linda (No.5) - $9.35 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.0% | Place: 34.5% | Value: 0.89x
Why Can lob into it if the race gets messy, but you'd want a few of the others to fluff their lines first.
Race 3 - Speed Showdown Maiden
Race type: Class 3, 900m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed; Chappolicious controls from the fence, Northern Boogie is right there, and Discreet Miss sits in the first wave with a nice enough setup
Punty read: This is proper toe-to-toe stuff. Chappolicious and Northern Boogie are the two most likely to sort it out between themselves, and on a heavy 900m dash that's often the whole bloody race - if you're not in the first half of the play, you're probably just watching. Discreet Miss has the right map to stalk the speed and can absolutely nick a place if the front pair go at it like two blokes arguing over the last sausage roll. Narrative is the roughie with the biggest story - the gear changes, the fresh legs and the wet-track angle say she can launch if the leaders go too hard, which is exactly how these little sprint wrecks get turned on their head.
Top 3 + Roughie (15.00 pool)
1. Chappolicious (No.5) - $1.64 / $1.12
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 36.3% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.73x
Why He maps to either lead or sit right on the leaders' backs, and on this deck that can be enough to have them all chasing his tail.
2. Northern Boogie (No.8) - $2.58 / $1.22
Bet Tracked
Prob 36.3% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.15x
Why Honest as a dog's breakfast and right in the firing line if the speed battle gets a bit stupid.
3. Discreet Miss (No.4) - $8.35 / $2.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.7% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.40x
Why Maps well enough to get the last crack at them if the leaders start coughing up ground.
Roughie: Narrative (No.6) - $19.75 / $3.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 2.04x
Why If the speed cooks and the gear tweaks sharpen her up, she's the swooper that can make the tote board look silly.
Race 4 - Mile of Mud
Race type: Class 1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed; Himeros looks the map boss, Freedom To Roam and Casino Sting are right in the first stampede, with Godwits and On Me trying to work in from the back half
Punty read: This is the first big value race of the day and it looks a proper test of who can sit in the right spot and keep finding when the legs start to feel like wet concrete. Freedom To Roam has been firming and maps beautifully, which is the sort of signal you do not ignore on a Heavy 9. Godwits is a classic wet-track closer - good trainer setup, decent place profile, and the kind of horse that can thunder home for you if the leaders start gasping. Himeros is the value place play from the map because if he controls things, or sits just off the pace, he's in the right zip code. Casino Sting and On Me are the ones that can rattle home late if the front-end collapses, but this is still a race where the first wave matters more than a pretty finish.
Top 3 + Roughie (17.50 pool)
1. Freedom To Roam (No.6) - $3.00 / $1.37
Bet $13.50 Each Way ($6.75W + $6.75P) — Cashed, net -$2.70
Prob 15.6% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 0.63x
Why The market's already sniffed him out, and the map is kind - he's the one that can sit close and keep rolling while the others are slogging through the swamp.
2. Godwits (No.1) - $8.35 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.61x
Why The wet track and the class profile say he can run a cheeky race if he gets clean air late.
3. Himeros (No.2) - $11.40 / $3.60
Bet $4.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$10.40
Prob 11.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.79x
Why The map gifts him a real shot at setting the terms or sitting right in the pocket, and that sort of run can hold up better than the price suggests.
Roughie: On Me (No.4) - $23.25 / $5.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.8% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.50x
Why Needs the leaders to come back to the field, but if they do, she's the type to be creeping home late like a late-night villain in a thriller.
Race 5 - The BM50 Grind
Race type: Benchmark 50, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow tempo, with Mariota and Bill Peyto buried out wide and the real race likely to be decided by who gets the softest run rather than who looks flash on paper
Punty read: This is a weird little staying slog where the map matters more than the pedigree photos. Mariota is the top pick, but the draw is the catch - she has to work her way across or get a miracle run, and on heavy ground that's never a free ride. Hardyo and Territories Spirit are the types that can hang around for the finish without lighting the scoreboard on fire, while Oakfield Echidna is the roughie you'd want if the race turns into a genuine war of attrition and the ones up front start coughing on the mud. Top Act has enough about him to be in the mix if he gets the right back-up from the race shape, but this is the sort of leg where you want to keep a hand on the wheel.
Top 3 + Roughie (10.00 pool)
1. Mariota (No.2) - $3.90 / $1.55
Bet $10.00 Each Way ($5.00W + $5.00P) — ✓ Won, net +$3.00
Prob 14.5% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 0.74x
Why The form is there and the stable knows the game, but the big ask is the map - if she gets across without burning petrol, she's right in the hunt.
2. Bill Peyto (No.10) - $3.88 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.5% | Place: 28.9% | Value: 0.74x
Why Dangerous enough on his day, but the setup isn't screaming for a second bite.
3. Hardyo (No.3) - $5.95 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.2% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 1.03x
Why Honest grinder who's always a chance to pick up the pieces if the map gets ugly, but he's more a hanger-on than a killer blow here.
Roughie: Oakfield Echidna (No.12) - $12.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 25.5% | Value: 1.38x
Why The one you'd want if the whole thing turns into a slopfest and the leaders are cooked by the top of the straight.
Race 6 - Radio Runner BM50
Race type: Benchmark 50, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed; Pattera rolls forward, Bit Of A Step and River Rogue are right there, and the middle-of-the-road types need to land the right suck run
Punty read: Pattera has drifted, but don't get spooked just because the price has breathed a little - sometimes the market wants a better number while the horse still has the map and the wet-track speed. The Git Up is the sneaky one in this race, because the place play has got the exact sort of profile you want in a sloggy 1200 - honest enough to sit in the race and tough enough to keep going when others start wobbling. Gold Smiles and River Rogue are the danger types if the speed holds and they can stalk rather than chase, while Bit Of A Step is the roughie who can absolutely bob up if the leaders turn it into a stamina test. This is a race where the early shape matters, but the finish is going to be a pain-in-the-arse grinder.
Top 3 + Roughie (9.50 pool)
1. Pattera (No.1) - $4.95 / $1.75
Bet $6.50 Each Way ($3.25W + $3.25P) — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 15.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.96x
Why The drift isn't ideal, but the map is still his and if he's allowed to roll along in front he's a very live chance to pinch the race.
2. Gold Smiles (No.7) - $5.95 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.0% | Place: 34.5% | Value: 1.15x
Why Can swoop into the picture if the leaders cook, but the play is already set.
3. The Git Up (No.10) - $8.80 / $2.45
Bet $3.00 Place — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 9.0% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.02x
Why The place profile is tidy enough for a race where you expect a few of them to stop to a walk in the last bit.
Roughie: Bit Of A Step (No.4) - $9.90 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 1.15x
Why If the leaders go too hard and the track bites, he's the type to be finishing over the top when the crowd's already looking for the exit.
Race 7 - The Quaddie Rattle
Race type: Benchmark 50, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace; St Roy and Just One Look settle handy, while the market's flirted with It's A Written and Calmundi but they've got to do it the hard way
Punty read: This is the chaos leg that can make or break the card. St Roy is the one I want with the wet ground and the map, because he can sit in the first wave and keep grinding when the race gets ugly. Just One Look is the other serious player - no bet on the sheet, but that's more about the stake shape than the ability, because the horse is in the right zone if the race turns into a scrap. Honey Slider is the rough place angle and can clatter into the frame if the pace is stronger than it looks, while Our Celebrity is the big-odds lurker who needs a few things to go pear-shaped. The market has had a poke at It's A Written, but on this deck I'd rather be on the ones with a cleaner map and a bit more wet-track grunt.
Top 3 + Roughie (15.50 pool)
1. St Roy (No.3) - $7.90 / $2.70
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P) — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 13.4% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 1.41x
Why He maps to sit right in the fire and this is exactly the sort of race where that matters more than the price tag.
2. Just One Look (No.5) - $8.40 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.4% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.50x
Why Honest, handy and in the right spot to get first crack if the speed isn't outrageous.
3. Honey Slider (No.9) - $19.25 / $4.80
Bet $5.00 Place — ⊘ Abandoned · bet voided (stake refunded)
Prob 3.3% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 0.86x
Why Needs the race to break up a bit, but if it does he's the one that can sneak into the frame while others are still trying to breathe.
Roughie: Our Celebrity (No.6) - $17.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.4% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.77x
Why Needs the front half to go too hard and the back markers to get a sniff, which is possible, but not where I'd be swinging the axe.
SEQUENCE LANES - SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
QUADDIE (R4-R7)
Smart: 6,1,2,10 / 2,10,3,12 / 1,7,10,4 / 3,5,2,8 (256 combos x $0.31 = $80.00) -- 31% flexi
Four open legs, but the card's got clear spines in R4 and R6 while R5 and R7 are where the chaos lives, so this is a proper sicko ticket with enough coverage to survive a blow-up.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Heavy 9 means on-pace matters
On a true rail with this much juice in the ground, runners that can hold a spot early are the ones that usually get first refusal. If you're back there waiting for a miracle, you're doing it the hard way.
2 - Market movers are trying to tell you a story
Villainess, Freedom To Roam and It's A Written have all been backed, while Cool Nanczye, Pattera and Jade Division have eased. That's the crowd having a proper sniff - but the map still has the final say.
3 - The roughie lane is all about wet-ground grinders
Horses like Godwits, Himeros, Oakfield Echidna and Bit Of A Step are the sort that can make a race pay if the leaders go too hard and start walking in the last furlong. That's how you turn a slog into a score.
THE LOOSE UNIT LOUNGE
That's the lot, legends. Keep one eye on the weather, one eye on the market, and don't go turning a Heavy 9 day into a full-blown hero mission. Back the map, respect the wet form, and remember the biggest loser at the track is always the bloke who tries to be clever after three coffees and a pie. Gamble Responsibly.
