R1
Waharoa Transport Co (1995) Ltd Mdn
1400m · Maiden; · 10:35
✓ WON +$13 Final

Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, midfield shuffle then a finish scramble
Punty read: This is a maiden where you want a horse that can actually find a position without wasting ground. Coniston looks like the "get it done" type on a deck like this, straightened up and ready to put rivals under pressure. Concurrence is the live danger, the sort that can sit in the right pocket and swoop if they bunch up. Spirit Of Ardsley has the form plus the soft footing, but the first goal is simply to not get stuck too far back too long.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Coniston (No.3) — $1.85 / $1.12 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$12.75
Prob 51.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.23x
Why market's got him for a reason, and the slow-ish tempo helps a horse that can strike late.

2. Concurrence (No.4) — $4.40 / $1.95 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.2% | Place: 48.9% | Value: 1.26x
Why he's the perfect "2nd or 1st" maiden profile, and he maps to get the right run in traffic.

3. Vodka And Caviar (No.8) — $8.60 / $3.10 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.86x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.

Roughie: Powhiri (No.6) — $9.40 / $3.10 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.6% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.72x
Why the path is real, but he needs the speed to collapse and a pocket to appear.

✗ MISS -$13 Final

Race type: Maiden, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, classic 2km chess game
Punty read: Djibouti is the one you want if you're chasing value without going completely feral. He's the kind of runner that can sit in the mix, then get to work when the race starts asking actual questions. Sweet Torquer's got some late-ish promise, but this is where the front runners can get away and turn the hunt into a procession. Seduire looks like she can slot into the finish lane if they're too polite early.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Djibouti (No.6) — $2.20 / $1.30 🏆 3RD
Bet $13.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$13.00
Prob 42.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.12x
Why solid speed profile for 2000m on Soft 7, and he looks built to capitalise when others stop accelerating.

2. Sweet Torquer (No.8) — $6.50 / $2.40 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 0.78x
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.

3. Seduire (No.13) — $9.50 / $3.10 🏆 WINNER

Prob 9.2% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.41x
Why if she finds a gap earlier than expected, she can sneak into the top end.

✗ MISS -$15 Final

Race type: Maiden, 1050m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, sprint energy needed
Punty read: Zaharias is the one that should turn this sprint into a job interview. Short races on Soft 7 are about efficiency, no wasting steps. Geneva Queen is the obvious alternate, she's got the sort of profile where she can hang around just long enough to make you sweat. Mango Lane is the danger if they string out and she gets an uninterrupted run.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Zaharias (No.6) — $2.65 / $1.40 🏆 3RD
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 47.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.21x
Why in a sprint, speed and balance win, and Soft 7 still rewards the horse that travels clean.

2. Geneva Queen (No.2) — $3.90 / $1.45 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.41x

Roughie: Bordeaux Belle (No.3) — $10.10 / $2.55 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.1% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 0.43x
Why the roughie path is straight, late burst, but she's got to overcome the market picture.

✓ WON +$16 Final

Race type: Benchmark 65, 1050m
Map & tempo: Hot Pace, leaders driving hard
Punty read: This one's a speed test disguised as a benchmark. Places To Be is the sort that likes to get rolling and force the issue, and at Soft 7, leaders can keep coming if they manage their effort. Emma Twigg is the main threat, the horse that can sit near the front and kick off at the right time. Belle Du Monde is the type to fill a spot if the leaders fade a touch.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)

1. Places To Be (No.2) — $2.30 / $1.40 🏆 WINNER
Bet $12.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$15.60
Prob 32.5% | Place: 56.4% | Value: 0.99x
Why if he's on-speed, Soft 7 doesn't stop him, it just makes rivals do more work to get past.

2. Emma Twigg (No.5) — $4.30 / $2.15 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.2% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.21x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.

3. Belle Du Monde (No.4) — $4.10 / $2.05 🏆 UNPLACED

1200m · Maiden; · 12:54
✓ WON +$40 Final

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, fast early pressure
Punty read: This is the race where the leaders either roll on or get mowed down. Ifbymagic looks like the one they'll have to deal with early, and on this deck that matters a lot. No Curfew is there as the value saver if she's not too far back early. Dicko's Dance is a sneaky place threat if she can get position without getting dragged into the speed too soon.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)

1. Ifbymagic (No.2) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$40.00
Prob 27.9% | Place: 64.8% | Value: 1.04x

Prob 12.4% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 0.75x

✗ MISS -$7 Final

Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, midfield travel counts
Punty read: Roccadonna looks like the one that can turn this into a controlled burn, not a messy scramble. La Danza and Bonus Bond both have "keep travelling, keep giving" vibes, but on Soft 7 the horse that finds the right rhythm is the one that keeps its kick. Lovegrove is the roughie that wants chaos, clear air, and a race that stays honest enough late.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.00 pool)

1. Roccadonna (No.4) — $4.90 / $1.90 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $7.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.00
Prob 21.7% | Place: 55.0% | Value: 1.08x
Why maps to get into the action, and 1400m Soft decks reward that consistent travelling.

✓ WON +$10 Final

Race type: Benchmark 65, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, pace sits in the middle then builds
Punty read: Typhoon Lucy is the money job, he's got the best blend of speed and intent, and Soft 7 plays into horses who can control their own rhythm. Starlit Express is the danger if the front runners soften, he's got that steady confidence to hit the line. See You In Beijing is the value swing, but he's the type who can get bogged if the race turns into a traffic jam.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

✗ MISS -$8 Final

Race type: Benchmark 65, 2000m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, middle-distance grind
Punty read: Sweet But Psycho is the simple headline, he's got the cleanest profile for this kind of trip, and on Soft 7 the stamina angle becomes real fast. Muscovado and Arjay's Flight are both the "don't get too far back" types, they can make the most of a race that stays moderate. Empressive is the roughie because she's got the right kind of late gear if you get the right run to the outside.

Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)

1. Sweet But Psycho (No.5) — $2.55 / $1.40 🏆 3RD
Bet $7.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 28.2% | Place: 64.2% | Value: 0.86x

Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.23x

Punty's Early Mail

Rightio Loose Units, Matamata on a Soft 7 where the track's chewing up momentum and everyone's after the same obvious run, the inside lane is basically a soggy rumour and the outside is where the snacks are.

This meeting's got that classic Matamata vibe, the pace is either honest or it's fake, and the horses that travel straight usually cash. Soft 7 means you want genuine speed early, then you want a finisher who can hold their lane when everyone else's doing that "running in cement" thing in the last 200.

My spine for the day is built around horses that have the right map and the right mindset for wet-ish ground. Then we bolt on a couple of smart value swings in the maiden chaos, because if you're not trying to beat the market at least once a day, you might as well just watch the sky rain.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Soft 7, 1050m to 2000m card
Rail: Out 6m
Official going: Soft 7 (expected to play Front Stalk, Then Finish)
Weather: Cloudy (watch for the track staying stingy and not drying out)
Early lane guess: Midfield into the straight, then wider if you're stuck behind traffic
Tempo profile: Mixed, but Soft 7 loves a steady tempo and hates cattle-prod racing
Jockeys to follow:
Craig Grylls: often lands them poised, and on a day like this, positioning wins races
Jack Taplin: gets mares and maidens organised early, then keeps the horse balanced late
George Rooke: sharp when the market swings, and he does not waste petrol in the middle stages
Stables to respect:
Mark Walker & Sam Bergerson (11 runners): they keep producing the "right there at the line" type on wetish decks
S & E Clotworthy (3 runners): their runners tend to get through the ground even when nothing goes right first-up
R R Manning (6 runners): the sort to have one warming up under pressure and then popping late

Punty's take:

Matamata's Soft 7 on the cloudy side is basically a raceway for horses that can keep their action underneath them. You can feel it in the way the early races set up, slow pace early usually turns into a sprint for lanes in the run home, and the ones that got over from midfield without panic are the ones that keep picking up prize money.

Watch the "speed map to the straight" types. If the leaders go hard enough, you want horses that can sit within striking distance. If the pace is half-hearted, you want something that can swoop and grab a gap, because on Soft 7 gaps open and close fast, like a door in a horror movie.

And hey, if you see a horse getting firmed late, get curious. This meet punishes lazy bets, the track is too honest for prayer. Back the ones that look like they're going to run their race, then swing at one roughie when the market underestimates wet footing.

What it means for you:

Game plan is simple, be aggressive where the map is clear, then protect where the chaos starts. Races 1, 3, and 6 are where maidens and spell-resume types can get weird, so stick to the horses that already look like they've got the right run style for Soft 7.

I'd rather be right on the "likely winner" early, then add value where the prices are getting stitched up. The Quaddie and Big 6 lanes are about controlled risk, not full send, because one busted barrier run and you're watching your ticket die a slow death in the straight.

Gambling on a wet deck is like playing poker with muddy cards, you can get away with a read, but you can't freestyle the whole thing. Let the pace dictate, and let the best-travelled horses hit the line first.
