Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Newman, head to https://punty.ai/tips/newman-2026-2022
Rightio Loose Units, Newman on a Good track with the rail doing its thing and the air all sunny and smug. Six races, a solid-sized card, and plenty of "how the hell did that get beat" energy in the back-half. I've had a proper dig through this lot, and I reckon the day is built for a spine, not a scattergun. We go Big 3 + Multi, then we attack every race with the top three shape plus one roughie that can turn the pub into a choir.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Newman, 1300 to 2100m card
Rail: True
Official going: Good (expected to play speed up top, but the finish still matters)
Weather: Mostly sunny, 17C, light breeze (watch for the slight rain dusting keeping the ground honest, no dramas, no bog-fest)
Early lane guess: tighten up early, then let the chaos in from Race 3 onwards
Tempo profile: mostly moderate races, so if you're off the speed early you're spending your petrol too early
Jockeys to follow:
Jason Li: often lands in the right spot and keeps them travelling
Jefferson Tsang: can punch through gaps when the field tightens
Brett Pope: steady hand, usually parks the horse where it can actually win
Stables to respect:
Timothy Pike (3 runners): they're showing up ready, especially in the middle distances
Ms J McLaughlin (10 runners): patient ride tactics, heaps of place pressure
Brett Pope (4 runners): when he points at a target, they run like it
Punty's take:
This is a "Good track, but don't get arrogant" sort of meeting. Rail is true, so the front runners have a slightly easier life than they do on a floaty track, yet it's still Newman, so wide trips and traffic can absolutely wreck your plan. You want horses that either get on with the job early or can at least hold a position without getting stranded.
Race 1 is a little slow-pace puzzle, and that means the backmarker types who still have a turn of foot are dangerous, but I still prefer the horse that's got the legs to keep grinding through the middle. Then we lock into Race 3 to Race 6, where the form cycles and the pace maps start screaming. That's where the quaddie legs get cheeky.
And yeah, Race 5, that sprint… it's a chaos handicap by name, and it'll behave like one. If you overthink it, you'll get stung. If you pick the right leaders and accept a bit of chaos, you've got a chance.
What it means for you:
Bet with intent. Early you want to protect your bankroll with the short list. That means win/each-way where it's logically set up, and leave the flailing alone. I'm using the map and the way these horses usually race, not just the price tag.
The practical plan: be aggressive in the races where the pace scenario suits the main chances, and take the roughie when the run style gives it a path, not because it's expensive. Also, I'm leaning into place leverage a bit today, because that's where the "lose less, win more often" strategy tends to pay its rent.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Hundred Yards (Race 1, No.3) — $3.95
Why slow tempo race, and it's got the grind to hit the line from a good tactical spot
2 - Rulesque (Race 3, No.6) — $2.88
Why on-pace profile with the value, it can land in the pocket and sprint late
3 - Chantilly Girl (Race 2, No.4) — $3.75
Why likely to get every chance up front on a rail-true Good track
Multi (all three to win): $10 × ~43.00 = ~$430.00 collect
Race 1 – Share The Spoils (Bm56+)
Race type: Handicap, 1550m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, with Moment In The Sun (1) the pace advantaged one, so watch who can move without getting stuck
Punty read:
This is a race where the race shape matters more than your daydream. It's a slow-ish tempo, which means the backmarkers can still be thereabouts if the leaders drift too early. But the real danger is the horse that's already positioned to keep rolling. Hundred Yards (No.3) has the profile to keep running through the middle lanes and not get bullied by traffic. Mystical Man and Torqued Up both look like they'll be chasing, and on their day they can still make a mess of your ticket, yet I'd rather take the horse that's already got the race mapped for a steady, finishing run.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Hundred Yards (No.3) — $3.95 / $1.85
Bet $12.00 Win, return $47.40
Prob 24.8% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.25x
Why Slow tempo usually rewards the consistent grinder, and No.3 is built for that "keep coming" job.
2. Torqued Up (No.2) — $3.85 / $1.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.5% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.15x
Why If it wins it's strong, but with only 2 places paid the plan is too thin to bother.
3. Moment In The Sun (No.5) — $2.78 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.79x
Why It's the market favourite type, but it's not giving enough value to justify backing blind.
Roughie: Mystical Man (No.1) — $3.95 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.9% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.10x
Why If the pace completely collapses you get a swoop, otherwise it's just too much work for a small dividend.
Race 2 – Oasis Heat (Bm48+)
Race type: Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Chantilly Girl likely to find the front, Topaz is pace advantaged too
Punty read:
This one's got enough pace to actually matter. Chantilly Girl (No.4) looks like the leader you want, because on a rail-true Good, going forward saves ground and saves brains. Topaz (No.1) is the other obvious danger, and it's firming, so you can't ignore it. The twist is My Tea (No.5) is the value flavour that can sneak into the top end if the leaders soften late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Chantilly Girl (No.4) — $3.75 / $1.95
Bet $12.00 Win, return $45.00
Prob 21.0% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 1.09x
Why If she's allowed to run her race up on the speed, she's the one to hold together late.
2. Topaz (No.1) — $3.15 / $1.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.3% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.89x
Why It's short enough that you're paying for the privilege, and the value doesn't stack.
3. My Tea (No.5) — $4.90 / $2.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.6% | Place: 25.2% | Value: 1.13x
Why It's a live runner in a finish, but I'm not going three deep here with the place market too thin.
Roughie: Leading Taddy (No.2) — $4.90 / $2.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 1.07x
Why If it gets cover and the leaders do their usual overcooked thing, it can pick up, but I'm not burning units on it.
Race 3 – East Pilbara Mess-Up (Bm56+)
Race type: Handicap, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, with Fameux and Bin Shalaa flavouring the tempo, while Delicate Ruler and Imperialize are keen
Punty read:
This is a pocket race. 1300m at Newman turns into a "find the right lane and don't stuff it" contest. Rulesque (No.6) is your standout for a reason, it's on-pace and can sit close enough to just keep building rather than chasing the whole way. Delicate Ruler (No.2) is the classier-looking leader type, but from the outside in these scenarios you want more than just heart, you want a clean run. Imperialize (No.4) is in the mix and can keep turning up in the first half of the race, yet Rulesque just has that "I'll still be there" profile.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Rulesque (No.6) — $2.88 / $1.37
Bet $8.00 Win, return $23.04
Prob 21.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.89x
Why On pace, good enough to hit the line, and it's not going to need miracles to place.
2. Delicate Ruler (No.2) — $4.25 / $1.65
Bet $2.50 Place, return $4.12
Prob 17.4% | Place: 62.2% | Value: 1.04x
Why Class tends to show at 1300m if it can hold its position, and this looks like it can.
3. Imperialize (No.4) — $4.90 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.9% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.02x
Why The danger is real, but I'm not overpaying for the chance when the place band isn't there.
Roughie: Heeza Beau (No.7) — $10.70 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.2% | Place: 28.9% | Value: 1.09x
Why Gear up, looks like it can sneak into the finish if the pace compresses and the kick comes late.
Race 4 – Spick And Span Precision (Bm48+)
Race type: Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Esquel and Coondle on speed, La Signora Dane in the pocket
Punty read:
1200m is a knife fight. You either get the right position, or you end up doing laps trying to find room. Coondle (No.2) is the map help type, and it's still likely to race on speed. Esquel (No.3) is the one I like for a run that's clean enough to last, Close Talker (No.1) is a value injection because it can go forward early and still keep pressure on when others start dropping their guts.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Coondle (No.2) — $3.15 / $1.57
Bet $11.00 Win, return $34.65
Prob 18.4% | Place: 60.0% | Value: 0.83x
Why It's on-pace, it's suited to this rail-friendly Good, and it should get its chance without doing too much.
2. Esquel (No.3) — $4.50 / $1.82
Bet $4.00 Place, return $7.28
Prob 17.2% | Place: 58.5% | Value: 1.11x
Why It's holding together form and it's the sort to stick around for a place when the sprint chaos hits.
3. Close Talker (No.1) — $6.35 / $2.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.9% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.45x
Why Strong price and strong chance, but the place band decision keeps it off the stake.
Roughie: Take The Field (No.5) — $10.70 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.1% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 0.94x
Why If the pace folds and it gets the right lane, it can sneak in, but it needs everything to go right.
Race 5 – King Kira Sprint Chaos (Bm68+)
Race type: BenchMark 68+, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Royalzel and Star Power look best placed early, Hit The Jackpot in the mix
Punty read:
This is open enough that you stop trying to find the one true winner and start hunting the right race plan. Royalzel (No.5) is the fav for a reason, but I like the way Border Control (No.2) is built for this kind of sprint, it's got enough platform to hit the finish running. Hit The Jackpot (No.8) is the value swing if the leaders get stuck too early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Royalzel (No.5) — $5.40 / $2.10
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $28.35 (wins) / $11.03 (places)
Prob 13.9% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.07x
Why It's the best blend of early position and finishing ability, and it's the right price to be brave.
2. Border Control (No.2) — $7.85 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 46.4% | Value: 1.44x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Hit The Jackpot (No.8) — $5.90 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.3% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.04x
Why It's live, but I'm not paying a premium for a third-runner place role.
Roughie: Star Power (No.6) — $9.10 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.3% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 0.95x
Why If it times the run and the track doesn't snooker the outside lanes, it can fill a gap at decent odds.
Race 6 – Newman Cup Stay Cool (Open, 2100m)
Race type: Open, 2100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, lots of midfield energy, Dynamic One and Lucky Landing are the ones showing shape
Punty read:
2100m at Newman usually rewards the horse that can keep travelling without being forced into a wide endurance test. Dynamic One (No.1) looks like it can take a position and still have petrol left for the final third. Let'sdeal (No.2) is right in the same lane, while Street Maschino (No.9) is the value type that can slice through gaps if the pack compresses. Star Testymony (No.8) is the roughie vibe, but I'll be honest, this one needs the run to line up, not just the form to be there.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Dynamic One (No.1) — $4.10 / $1.70
Bet $7.50 Each Way ($3.75W + $3.75P), return $15.37 (wins) / $6.38 (places)
Prob 18.5% | Place: 56.5% | Value: 1.06x
Why The pace setup suits, it can sit and keep moving, and it's built for this distance pressure.
2. Let'sdeal (No.2) — $4.10 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.7% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.02x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Another Nephew (No.5) — $4.60 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 49.0% | Value: 0.94x
Why Could be thereabouts, but the place edge isn't screaming enough.
Roughie: Star Testymony (No.8) — $9.30 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.1% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 0.92x
Why If it drops into a rhythm and the race gets stretched, you can get an upset-style place.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - When the pace is slow, follow the grind
Race 1 is slow, which means you want horses that can keep earning metres through the middle, Hundred Yards is built for that.
2 - Place pressure is the sneaky weapon today
Race 4 is screaming place leverage with sprint chaos, Close Talker might be the "price that moves your mates", but the value place decision is already handled.
3 - The cup is about staying in your lane
On 2100m, Dynamic One has the tactical profile, don't overthink it with far-wider running types, this is about rhythm and last-third acceleration.
SEQUENCE LANES
Quaddie (R3-R6)
Smart: 6,2,4,7 / 2,3,1,5 / 8,5,2,6 / 1,5,2,8 (256 combos x $0.31 = $80.00) -- 31% flexi
One-line commentary: Four open-ish legs so it's a high-risk entertain-yourself quad, but the leg shapes are built from the main chances.
Punty's take: Wide opens in all four races, so it's hit-and-run quaddie style. You're buying a slice of chaos, not a guarantee.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
If you get bored, you'll start second-guessing and that's how you end up donating to the profit gods. Stick to the spine, respect the pace, and let the roughie do its job in the background. Gamble Responsibly.
