This is one of those meetings where the obvious faves are live, but you've gotta hunt value in the right races. The middle legs look like pace-driven seatbelt stuff, while the later hunts turn into "who's actually still fresh at the line?" territory. I've built the day around a clean Big 3 spine, then bolted in smart insurance where the maps stack up.

Punty's take:

Soft 5 at Townsville is a bit of a bastard bargain, the track is heavy enough to punish the rank backmarkers, but still quick enough for the genuine speed to keep chewing. So when I see "on_pace" and a draw that lets them use it without going backwards, I'm leaning in. The leaders here are basically setting up the movie trailer for everyone else.

The BIG thing tonight is the pace map. In races like Race 3 and Race 6, it's not just "who's best", it's "who gets the right run while others get stuck saving ground and doing extra work." That's why you'll see me lean into the Hellish/Outback Action types, then carry that into the Stokomo lane in the last race where the finish is the battleground.

And yes, I've got a Multi spine that's boring in the best way. Donebravo, Hellish, Vouchers. That trio hits three different tempo stories, and if you get at least two of them home, you'll feel like you just walked out of the TAB with a tote ticket and a grin.

What it means for you:

If you're only backing one thing, make it the spine: Donebravo in Race 1, Hellish in Race 3, and Vouchers in Race 5. They're the backbone because they match the track logic, and because the market isn't ignoring them. With a Soft 5, you want horses that don't need everything to go perfect.

For the rest, I'm treating this like a punting walk-and-talk. Race 2 and Race 4 are where you protect your ticket because the maps and gear changes scream "we can't overthink this, just respect the runners that can find positions early." Race 6 is the closer, and it's built for one of those "sitting right off the speed" plays, Stokomo's the kind of horse that turns up at the exact moment you're starting to doubt your life choices.

Why The map suits and the market has it on a leash, this one looks ready to pounce turning for home.

Race 1 – Great Northern Brewing Co Mdn Plate

Race type: Maiden, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Karmardo and Donebravo trying to set a rhythm, midfield to follow
Punty read: This is a speed vs school of hard knocks race on a Soft 5. Donebravo (No.3) is the type to be in the right spot early and keep grinding, and if it gets a clean run it's hard to stop at 1000m because the track takes the late-lasers out of the equation. Karmardo (No.6) and Belinda's Rubi (No.9) give you that stalking angle too, but the danger with maidens is always the "did they learn?" factor, and Donebravo profiles best for the learning happening now.

Punty read: This race is basically a sprinting contest where the first two hundred metres decides everything. Tambo's Sister (No.12) is the one that stands out as the "do the right thing, be there when they stop" type, and with this pace profile she's primed to grab a run and hold it through the line. Kickoff (No.4) and Hell Of A Bentley (No.6) look like proper contenders too, but at these distances on Soft 5 you can't ignore how quickly things turn into scramble-mode.

Punty read: This is the race where you back the horse that can handle a Soft 5 while still being able to take a position early. Hellish (No.2) is my backbone, it's the on-pace gun with the class to go past tired rivals, and in a 1200m handicap it matters that it can hold its spot when others start drifting back. Outback Action (No.3) is the value-runner, the sort that can keep travelling while the backmarkers are stuck doing work. Northern Pride (No.1) is a "respect" too, but I'm not taking the bait over the top two stories.

Punty read: At 1609m on a Soft 5, the race becomes about position, ground, and willingness to keep rolling. Rock The Sunrise (No.8) is the kind of runner that can travel and stick on, Intruder (No.3) is right in the mix too, and Ellis Beach (No.1) is the most obvious "fight it out to the finish" type. But I'm backing Ellis Beach because it's drawing inside and this track punishes wide, over-worked trips.

Punty read: This is a Soft 5 1400 where the winners are the ones that can keep their momentum past the halfway point. Vouchers (No.3) is the key for me, it's got the perfect "sit and pounce" profile, and it should get a crack at the finish when the field starts thinning. Dark Fae (No.8) is your danger, it's on the pace and those kinds can keep surprising if the backmarkers don't get clear.

Punty's take: Race 3 and Race 5 carry the most "logical" centre of gravity, Race 4 and Race 6 are where quaddie dreams go to stretch their legs and sometimes bite.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Soft 5, 1000m, and the inside matters more than your ego
On this surface, getting caught wide early costs more than you think, and in the shorties you want position, not hope.

2 - Maiden sprints on Soft 5 reward the horse that can handle the tempo
Donebravo's on-pace profile is the big reason it's the safest "learning" play in Race 1.

3 - The last race is the one where your gut should shut up and let Stokomo talk
With a genuine pace on, Stokomo's the kind that keeps rolling instead of suddenly becoming a passenger at the line.
