Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Belmont Park, head to https://punty.ai/tips/belmont-2026-06-27
Rightio Loose Units, Belmont on a Soft 7 with the rail out 3m and showers hanging around like a bad hangover is proper winter punting territory - not a day for deadset frauds who need top of the ground and a cuddle from the stewards.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Belmont Park, 1000m-2100m card
Rail: +3m Entire
Official going: Soft 7 (expected to play fair-to-on pace, with enough sting that the handy types won't get a picnic)
Weather: Showers, 11°C, humid as a wet sock, gusts up to 24km/h (watch for a bit more chop if the rain keeps chewing on it)
Early lane guess: Middle-to-on-pace, with clear running the go; leaders can pinch it if they get comfy, but swoopers need tempo and luck
Tempo profile: The sprints have proper juice, the middle races should be run at a decent clip, and the staying/tester types will need to handle the soft and keep their feet
Jockeys to follow:
William Pike - the bloke you want when a soft-track race needs timing more than bravery; gets the cream rides and usually doesn't miss the memo.
Brad Parnham - handy stick on this card with a few live hopes and the sort of seat that can make a difference in these tactical races.
Ms Natika Riordan(a3/52.5kg) - the claim matters, and she's on a stack of key chances that can lob handy without carrying the kitchen sink.
Stables to respect:
G & A Williams (4 runners) - has live bullets in R1, R4 and R7, and the stable's got the sort of book that can keep the day ticking over.
Michael Grantham (4 runners) - a couple of live hopes, a few gear tweaks, and enough ammo to nick a race or two if the map falls right.
D & B Pearce (3 runners) - always worth a hard look when the wet stuff's around; they've got runners who can find the line late if the pace is honest.
Punty's take:
Belmont's the kind of day where the first thing you do is chuck the ego in the bin. Soft 7, rail out, and showers means you're not just backing class - you're backing horses that can handle a bit of cut and still quicken when the race gets serious. That's why the meeting story starts with a couple of proper anchors early, then turns into a bit of a knife fight in the middle and late races.
The sprint races have enough speed to stop the track turning into a pure front-runner parade, but don't kid yourself - the handy horses are still the ones living in the nice neighbourhood. Morning Thunder, Xentaro, Mt Shirataku and Territory Man are the kind of runners that can make the card look tidy if they do what they're meant to. The juicy stuff is in the open handicaps where horses like Searchin' Times, Startling Star, Battle Commander and Snippy Which can turn a quiet Saturday into a proper grin.
The market's also had a good hard look at a few of them already - some are getting backed like the family chook at Christmas, while a couple of shorties are being asked to carry all the public money and the weight of expectation. That's where the value sits: not just in the shiny favourites, but in the horses that map well, handle the wet, and look ready to be smothered into the race rather than dragged through it.
What it means for you:
Treat the early part of the card like a banker-and-saver job, not a smash-and-grab. Race 1, Race 4 and Race 7 are the races to build around if you're playing the quaddie lanes - they've got the clearest shape and the most trustworthy map horses. If you want to get a bit cheeky, lean into the horses that can sit handy and still finish, because the soft ground will punish the ones that are one-paced or out the back with too much to do.
Where you need to be a bit looser is the chaos races - Race 5, Race 6 and Race 8 are where the card can get messy if the tempo doesn't pan out or the leaders get carved up. That's where each-way and place plays make sense, because paying overs for certainty in those races is how blokes end up feeding the tote like it's on the payroll. Bank the right lanes, protect the open ones, and let the value horses do the heavy lifting.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
1 - Morning Thunder (Race 1, No.1) — $1.80
Why Resumes off a debut win that screamed class, and Pike can tuck him away and let the race come to him.
2 - Xentaro (Race 2, No.1) — $4.80
Why Loves this sort of setup, handles the soft, and with the claim he's got every chance to bully the sprint.
3 - Mt Shirataku (Race 4, No.1) — $1.60
Why Proper class horse of the day - already knows the track, handles the conditions, and looks the one they'll all be chasing.
Multi (all three to win): $10 x ~13.82 = ~$138.24 collect
Race 1 - Swan Draught Plate
Race type: Open, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed; Farnova looks the likely pilot, with Morning Thunder and Beyond A Doubt stalking the burn-up
Punty read: This is a proper little speed skirmish. Farnova's been crunched and from barrier 2 he can roll along and make them chase, but Morning Thunder resumes with a debut win in the bag and Pike aboard, which is never a bad place to be. Beyond A Doubt keeps knocking on the door and should be running on late if they cut each other up early. Lucky Shot is the smoky if the race turns into a burn-and-sprint, but the real story is the short-priced horses carrying the weight of expectation while the money keeps sniffing around Farnova.
Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)
1. Morning Thunder (No.1) — $1.80 / $1.20
Bet $9.00 Win, return $16.20
Prob 40.3% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.91x
Why Won like a horse with more up his sleeve on debut, and Pike can sit him midfield, switch off and unleash late if they go hard enough up front.
2. Beyond A Doubt (No.2) — $9.00 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.4% | Place: 25.5% | Value: 1.63x
Why Honest as a hound and keeps finding the line, but the wide gate means he needs a touch of luck to land the knockout blow.
3. Farnova (No.6) — $6.50 / $2.05
Bet $3.00 Place, return $6.15
Prob 14.4% | Place: 33.9% | Value: 1.18x
Why Heavily backed for a reason - maps to control it, has the gear tweak, and if he gets that soft lead he can be bloody hard to reel in.
Roughie: Lucky Shot (No.3) — $14.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.9% | Place: 25.5% | Value: 0.86x
Why Needs the leaders to turn it into a kamikaze mission, but if the speed collapses he'll be the one rattling home late.
Race 2 - Drummond Golf Hcp
Race type: Handicap, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed with Just Walter John likely to get involved early and Sound Of Speed wanting a say from the wide draw
Punty read: This is a sharp little sprint where the map matters a heap. Zourun Run is the favourite, but the value sits a touch off him - Xentaro brings the strongest blend of track, distance and soft-track form, while Sound Of Speed gets blinkers for the first time and could be the one that makes them earn it. Just Walter John is the kind of on-speed player who can flatten the pace if the track is playing honest, and that's why this race feels more like a proper tactical knife fight than a straight favourite's parade.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Xentaro (No.1) — $4.80 / $1.55
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), return $25.20 (wins) / $8.14 (places)
Prob 24.0% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.44x
Why Proven at the trip, proven on the soft and gets the claim - that's a bloody useful combo in a sprint where the race shape should suit.
2. Zourun Run (No.3) — $2.45 / $1.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.0% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.73x
Why A good horse in the right race, but at the price you're paying for perfection and this one still has to dodge a few bullets.
3. Just Walter John (No.4) — $6.00 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.6% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.24x
Why He'll go forward and give a sight, but the market isn't exactly begging you to dive in at the price.
Roughie: Sound Of Speed (No.2) — $12.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.1% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.51x
Why Blinkers first time, a past run of bad luck can be forgiven, and if they hand him the lead he'll be a nasty little bastard to run down.
Race 3 - Mrs Mac's (Bm72+)
Race type: Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed; Norich likely to roll forward, with Charino and Yorga Pride stalking the show
Punty read: Soft track, 1200m, and a bunch of honest types - this is the sort of race that can look simple on paper and turn into a proper mess when the whips come out. Charino gets the right draw and comes off a soft win here, so he deserves respect, but the wet track and the pace map keep The Calabrese very much in the conversation if the leaders go a touch keen. Yorga Pride has the gear changes to sharpen him up, yet the market's already had a nibble and you don't want to get trapped paying peak price for peak hope. Wubin Gold is the one that'll have them sweating late if the race gets stretched.
Top 3 + Roughie ($16.00 pool)
1. Charino (No.2) — $3.40 / $1.45
Bet $9.50 Each Way ($4.75W + $4.75P), return $16.15 (wins) / $6.89 (places)
Prob 16.3% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.70x
Why Has the right sort of soft-track profile, gets a cosy draw, and the last-start win says he's still got a proper motor.
2. Yorga Pride (No.7) — $3.70 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.3% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 0.76x
Why The gear changes are interesting and Pike aboard is never a bad sign, but the market's already taken a fair slice.
3. The Calabrese (No.6) — $6.50 / $2.30
Bet $6.50 Place, return $14.95
Prob 14.4% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.18x
Why He's the one who'll be steaming home when the pace and the soft ground start chewing up the front runners.
Roughie: Wubin Gold (No.4) — $16.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.9% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.98x
Why If they go too hard up front and he gets a clean ride, he can absolutely blow up the finish late.
Race 4 - TABtouch - Westspeed Platinum Winter Series Final
Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine speed with Kelvinater likely to lead; Speed Bubble and Canny Jack are the ones who'll suffer if it gets sit-and-sprint
Punty read: This is the race where the shortie has to earn his dinner. Mt Shirataku is the class act and should be hard to beat if he runs to his best, but the market's already made him a skinny little anchor. Rainline is the better each-way play off a forgiving run last start, and Right To Silence is the sort of horse the tote often ignores while he sneaks into the finish. Speed Bubble is the chaos card - back from the back, wet ground, and the sort of turn of foot that can make a race look silly if the pace gets hot.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.50 pool)
1. Mt Shirataku (No.1) — $1.60 / $1.12
Bet $3.50 Win, return $5.60
Prob 40.8% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 0.82x
Why Won here two starts back, just missed last time, and he's got the class edge over most of these.
2. Rainline (No.2) — $7.00 / $2.00
Bet $8.00 Place, return $16.00
Prob 14.6% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 1.28x
Why Last run had excuses and this looks a very similar setup; if he gets the right passage he's right in the finish.
3. Diamonds'n'rubies (No.6) — $7.50 / $2.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.9% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.12x
Why Maps handy enough to be dangerous, but the numbers say he's more a contender than a bet.
Roughie: Speed Bubble (No.3) — $13.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.51x
Why Won from the back last start and if the leaders go too hard, he'll be the one coming over the top like the last act of a Marvel movie.
Race 5 - Peters Investments (Rs1mw)
Race type: Handicap, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate speed; Searchin' Times should find a handy spot, while Spicy Thang and Poblano can keep the heat on
Punty read: This is the proper chaos handicap - the kind where the favourite looks solid, the second pick looks honest, and then some sneaky bastard at a price ruins the picnic. Searchin' Times comes in fresh and knows exactly how to win from here, while Deltason keeps finding a way to land in the exact same postcode as the winner. Spicy Thang is a good horse but the price has been eaten alive, and that's exactly why we're happy to let him be somebody else's headache. Poblano is the interesting one in the shadows - if he gets the right run, he can definitely make the exotics sweat.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Searchin' Times (No.4) — $5.50 / $2.10
Bet $14.00 Each Way ($7.00W + $7.00P), return $38.50 (wins) / $14.70 (places)
Prob 17.0% | Place: 66.7% | Value: 1.19x
Why Fresh horse, good gate, and the track record says he can fire first-up if the stable has him wound up.
2. Spicy Thang (No.6) — $2.75 / $1.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.5% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 0.57x
Why He'll be there in the firing line, but the market has him on a tight leash and that price leaves no room for mistakes.
3. Deltason (No.2) — $5.50 / $2.10
Bet $5.00 Place, return $10.50
Prob 15.0% | Place: 39.9% | Value: 1.04x
Why Got beaten less than a length here last start and from barrier 1 he should get the perfect run.
Roughie: Poblano (No.8) — $9.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.31x
Why The form's clean enough and if he gets a nice trail, he's the sort that can sneak into the photo and make the tote look like a mug.
Race 6 - WA Racehorse Owners' Association (Bm66+)
Race type: Handicap, 2100m
Map & tempo: Slow pace; they'll likely crawl early, which makes positioning and the last 600m all the important bits
Punty read: This is a staying race, but not the kind where you can sit back and doze off - it's tactical, and the pace being slow means the leader or the horse sitting just off the speed can pinch it. Startling Star is the right kind of fitter, late-running type who can still surge off a soft tempo, and Major Mario is the sneaky one with enough on-pace intent to turn this into a race for the brave. Antique Queen is the obvious danger and probably the horse they're all trying to knock over, but at the price you don't get paid to be in agreement with the market. Kisses From Kelly and Duchees Demerit are the sort of place hopes that can make your exotics look smart if the race gets messy late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Startling Star (No.4) — $4.60 / $1.80
Bet $14.00 Each Way ($7.00W + $7.00P), return $32.20 (wins) / $12.60 (places)
Prob 20.3% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.18x
Why Comes off the right sort of finish here last time and the soft tempo should let him build into the race.
2. Antique Queen (No.5) — $2.35 / $1.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.7% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.56x
Why She looks the one to beat, but the price is tiny and there's no gravy left in the bottle.
3. Major Mario (No.1) — $8.50 / $2.60
Bet $5.00 Place, return $13.00
Prob 16.5% | Place: 35.0% | Value: 1.77x
Why Can roll forward and make a race of it from the turn if they loaf along early.
Roughie: Kisses From Kelly (No.2) — $19.00 / $4.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.3% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.28x
Why If they crawl and she gets the last crack at them, she can sneak into the minors without too much fuss.
Race 7 - Liquor Barons (Bm66+)
Race type: Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate speed; Territory Man should get the right run, while All Grunt and Monte Tremezzo are the main late threats
Punty read: This is the sort of race where the form guide says "favourite" and the punter says "yeah, but can he actually get away with it?" Territory Man is the one they all have to beat - he's fit, honest, and maps beautifully enough to control the race if he wants. Fifth Essence has the softer sort of profile that screams place player, and Monte Tremezzo is the value player who'll be there at the business end if the pace is even slightly too hot. All Grunt is the big roughie with some sparkle in the money - if the stable has him right first-up, he can make a mess of the late dividends.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.00 pool)
1. Territory Man (No.5) — $2.05 / $1.25
Bet $11.50 Win, return $23.57
Prob 24.0% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 0.61x
Why Proven at the trip, proven in this sort of race, and he just keeps turning up like a bloke who never leaves the pub till last drinks.
2. Fifth Essence (No.3) — $10.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.1% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.89x
Why Maps to get the right run, loves a bit of give, and can be motoring late if they overcook the speed.
3. Monte Tremezzo (No.10) — $9.00 / $2.60
Bet $6.50 Place, return $16.90
Prob 15.1% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.70x
Why The drift is annoying, but the race shape still suits him and he looks a strong late top-three chance.
Roughie: All Grunt (No.2) — $10.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.3% | Place: 63.7% | Value: 1.54x
Why First-up in a race he can win if he lands the right run and the market's not far off; just not enough room for a saver.
Race 8 - Bisley Workwear (Bm72+)
Race type: Handicap, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate speed with Battle Commander and Prophet And Power likely to keep it honest, but the backmarkers need luck from the soft draw map
Punty read: Last race of the day and it's a proper Belter - not because it's easy, but because it can get ugly in a hurry. Battle Commander looks the map horse, Snippy Which is the horse with the right wet-track timing, and Noteworthy is the one who can jump from the paint and make everyone else look like they're standing still. Simply Thinkin' is a serious type, but the map is a bit of a prick and the price isn't exactly screaming "free money" either. Currimundi and Prophet And Power are the wildcards if you want to blow out a dividend and not just watch the favourite grind away.
Top 3 + Roughie ($23.00 pool)
1. Battle Commander (No.3) — $7.00 / $2.25
Bet $12.50 Each Way ($6.25W + $6.25P), return $43.75 (wins) / $14.06 (places)
Prob 17.2% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 1.51x
Why Led until the last stride here last start and gets another chance to boss them from the front.
2. Simply Thinkin' (No.6) — $4.40 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.7% | Place: 43.3% | Value: 0.93x
Why Handy enough horse, but the map isn't doing him any favours and the price is too short for the headaches.
3. Snippy Which (No.2) — $7.50 / $2.30
Bet $10.50 Place, return $24.15
Prob 15.2% | Place: 65.5% | Value: 1.44x
Why Comes off a strong last-start win, handles the soft, and should be in the right spot to keep kicking late.
Roughie: Noteworthy (No.4) — $10.00 / $2.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.4% | Place: 60.0% | Value: 1.56x
Why Draws nicely and has the sort of profile that can pop up if the leaders get into a scrap.
SEQUENCE LANES - SINGLE OPTIMISED TICKET
Early Quaddie (R1-R4)
Smart: 1,6,2 / 1,3,4,2 / 2,7,6 / 1,2,6,3 (144 combos x $0.24 = $35.00) -- 24% flexi
Two solid anchors early and two races that need a bit of covering - it's a sensible lane, not a throw-the-kitchen-sink job, but you still get a decent price if the shorties salute.
Quaddie (R5-R8)
Smart: 4,6,2,8 / 4,5,1,2 / 5,10,3,2 / 2,3,6,4 (256 combos x $0.25 = $65.00) -- 25% flexi
This is the proper sweaty one - four legs with enough moving parts to make a grown man swear at the screen, so it's a wide play and a true entertainment ticket.
Big 6 (R3-R8)
Smart: 2 / 1 / 4 / 4 / 5 / 3 (1 combos x $2.00 = $2.00) -- 200% flexi
That's a pure skinny stab with no room for bullshit - if the form guide goes your way, you look like a genius; if not, you're just another mug with a story.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - The soft-track map is king
On this card, horses that can sit handy and still finish are the ones you want to die on. Morning Thunder, Farnova, Xentaro, Mt Shirataku and Territory Man all have map shapes that make life easier when the track's got a bit of sting in it.
2 - The market's had a good old sniff at the right ones
Farnova, Deltason, Searchin' Times, Battle Commander and Snippy Which have all had proper support, and most of them have a believable racing reason behind it. That's the sort of money you don't ignore just because the tote's being loud.
3 - The roughies aren't hopeless - they're just messy
Sound Of Speed, Poblano, Major Mario, Monte Tremezzo and Noteworthy are the sort of runners who can blow up exotics if the race shape turns ugly. Not every roughie needs to bolt in like an Oscar-winning comeback - sometimes they just need the top two to crack and the line to open up.
