Punty's Punts
Race type: Bm68, 1650m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, and it's basically about who can poke a position without getting shuffled into last-chance mode.
Punty read: Azonto is the obvious "do the job" runner from barrier 5, and when the tempo is slow, you want that sort of tactical map. Eaglefurther is the one I'm watching for the run to open up, because those interference excuses are the exact sort that can bounce a horse into a better lane today. Flossing's there too, but I'm not going past the obvious unless the race falls apart.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Azonto (No.1) — $2.05 / $1.15 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$15.75
Prob 41.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.00x
Why She's got the class and the synthetic comfort to sit, wait, and then jab through late. Slow tempo suits her style.
2. Flossing (No.2) — $3.80 / $1.72 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 27.7% | Place: 61.9% | Value: 1.13x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Eaglefurther (No.3) — $4.80 / $2.10 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.7% | Place: 36.2% | Value: 1.18x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Roughie: Mateus (No.6) — $10.75 / $3.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.8% | Place: 19.1% | Value: 0.98x
Why If she's to win, it's chaos ball, and she needs everything to go right early, which on synthetic is never a guarantee.
Race type: Bm76, 1009m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, leaders going hard, and the sprint turns into a "who's in front when the whistle dies" race.
Punty read: Alpine Thunder should be dictating, and on this sort of tempo, that's a huge advantage. Bold Instinct is the likely pressure, and if she's blinkered again, it's because they want her switched on and closer rather than wandering through midfield. Volkanovski is the danger runner, especially if the pace drags and the outside stalk gets first crack at the sprint lane.
Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)
1. Alpine Thunder (No.1) — $1.81 / $1.27 🏆 WINNER
Bet $8.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$6.88
Prob 51.8% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 1.12x
Why If she jumps and crosses, it's all about holding the group together, and this track usually rewards those who set the rhythm.
2. Bold Instinct (No.2) — $3.60 / $1.87 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.5% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.86x
Why Field's too small to pay places, so there's no saver to have — win bet on top or nothing. Tracked.
3. Volkanovski (No.6) — $4.45 / $2.15 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.4% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.90x
Why Field's too small to pay places, so there's no saver to have — win bet on top or nothing. Tracked.
Roughie: Within Sight (No.5) — $7.05 / $3.02 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.64x
Why He can run on, but this is a tempo race, and he's more "scrape a cheque" than win material.
Race type: C2, 1350m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so it's about where you're positioned when the kick starts.
Punty read: City Wok and Bella Chinkara are the two that scream "dominant role in the race shape". Bella Chinkara's barrier 1 is a beauty for a synthetic short trip, because you can control the run without losing ground. Fierce 'n Fabulous is the classic "if she finds a lane, watch out" type, and Bellsprout's more of a value play if the leaders get too comfortable.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Bella Chinkara (No.4) — $2.32 / $1.20 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 41.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.19x
Why She's built for this sort of tempo, and with her track habits, she's hard to ignore when the gaps open.
2. City Wok (No.1) — $1.77 / $1.07 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 39.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.83x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Fierce 'n Fabulous (No.3) — $9.35 / $2.85 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.6% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 1.02x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Roughie: Bellsprout (No.2) — $10.50 / $3.20 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.4% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 0.83x
Why Looks more like place running upside than the full win, and on this card the place band is thin.
Race type: Bm68, 1350m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, so the on-pacers still matter, but you don't want to be too deep in traffic.
Punty read: Simply Deep should sit close and get the right jump on the leaders. Stardarmus is the other big threat, and the weight drop makes me pay attention to her finish. Sh'bourne Power can sneak into the mix if the speed suits, but I don't think she's the one to beat the top two unless there's a real tempo wobble. Stone Cold Stunner's in with a shot if she gets a cleaner run, but she's higher risk at this level.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Simply Deep (No.3) — $2.41 / $1.32 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 34.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.01x
Why The on-pacer role is strong here, and she looks like the one who gets the right angle turning for home.
2. Stardarmus (No.5) — $2.95 / $1.50 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 28.9% | Place: 61.4% | Value: 1.01x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Sh'bourne Power (No.4) — $4.75 / $2.00 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.0% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.98x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Roughie: Stone Cold Stunner (No.1) — $7.35 / $2.65 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.6% | Place: 23.4% | Value: 0.96x
Why The gate and the pace help, but she's the "if" horse, not the "banker" horse.
Race type: Maiden, 1350m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so positions matter, and the late run is king.
Punty read: Maiden plate chaos, my favourite genre after action movies and disappointing my tipping slip. Lyrebird Lady's in the right spot to pop out and find room, and Stollaway Ned is the live value if the leaders start to clog. Symphony Queen is the sort that can run on for a place, but she needs the race to go right, while Guber feels like a danger in the right lane.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Lyrebird Lady (No.9) — $4.30 / $1.80 🏆 2ND
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — Cashed, net -$1.30
Prob 18.3% | Place: 47.3% | Value: 0.79x
Why She's got the midfield mix to travel and then lift, and on synthetic, that timing is everything.
2. Stollaway Ned (No.7) — $4.60 / $1.82 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.7% | Place: 49.0% | Value: 1.30x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Symphony Queen (No.10) — $4.90 / $1.90 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.6% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.77x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Spinner (No.6) — $20.25 / $4.00 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.4% | Place: 17.3% | Value: 1.19x
Why She can swoop if the speed goes to mush, but she's a roughie role, and I'm keeping the powder dry.
Race type: Maiden, 1009m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, so it's about the first 300m and then holding your spot through the sprint.
Punty read: Alkira is the headline. The rail draw and the speed advantage make her the one to beat, and on this synthetic trip, "best in the jump" often turns into "best at the line". Roland View is the one I keep in my notebook for a stalk and run-on finish, while Precious Illusion and Ezydoit are the exotics if the favourite gets a weird run. This is a race where being sensible looks sexy.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.50 pool)
1. Alkira (No.8) — $1.25 / $1.01 🏆 WINNER
Bet $8.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$2.12
Prob 61.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.05x
Why She's the class of the field today, and the trip suits that kind of clean, controlled sprint action.
2. Roland View (No.6) — $10.50 / $1.85 🏆 4TH
Bet $3.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$3.00
Prob 8.2% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.99x
Why Big price for a horse who can hit the frame if the favourite does anything other than cruise.
3. Precious Illusion (No.10) — $13.75 / $2.30 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.6% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 0.95x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Ezydoit (No.9) — $13.75 / $2.30 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.6% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 0.83x
Why Too much has to go right. I'm happier using her as a watchlist than a wallet-bleeder.
Race type: Bm60, 1150m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, leaders push, and it turns into a speed map versus staying power showdown.
Punty read: Billie The Great is right in the mix on pace, and I like that she's got a real role. Geegeeschaser is the danger if he keeps finding the pegs early and doesn't get mugged in the first turn. Eastcoast Miss is the stalking option, and I want her covered late because this trip is where you can run third into a full lane problem.
Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)
1. Billie The Great (No.3) — $4.70 / $1.85 🏆 7TH
Bet $8.50 Each Way ($4.25W + $4.25P) — ✗ Lost, net -$8.50
Prob 16.9% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.04x
Why Pace pressure suits her, and she should be there when the leaders feel the wind up.
2. Geegeeschaser (No.11) — $3.90 / $1.72 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.3% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.81x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Eastcoast Miss (No.5) — $5.45 / $2.10 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.8% | Place: 48.2% | Value: 0.96x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: I'm Chev (No.9) — $9.05 / $2.90 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.8% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.28x
Why If she finds the lane and the pace cracks, she can sneak into the trifecta-chaos, but I'm keeping this focused.
Race type: Open, 1650m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so the finishing burst and positioning through the middle is everything.
Punty read: Coal River is the one leading with a wet-weather style of confidence even though it's not tipping it down. Garcon D'espoir has the more tactical profile, and if the market's backing him with bandages off first time, I want to respect the intent. Sushi Express is the pocket stalker and can run on if she's within striking distance at the 400.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Coal River (No.2) — $2.80 / $1.55 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 34.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.23x
Why She's the one with the clearest pace-to-finish pipeline, and slow tempo gives her time to build the sprint.
2. Garcon D'espoir (No.6) — $2.51 / $1.45 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.8% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 0.75x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Sushi Express (No.1) — $4.90 / $2.25 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.8% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.22x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Roughie: Captain Cam (No.4) — $17.00 / $4.40 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.6% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.57x
Why Needs a real bounce and a clean run. Roughie mission, not a bet you make when the pool is thin.
Race type: C1, 1880m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, and at this distance, it's who can keep travelling when the legs get tired.
Punty read: Them's The Breaks is the value magnet and the sort that can tag on through the later stages when the race gets a bit ragged. Don Turboas is the consistent threat, and Bailed is the interesting one, because sometimes the "smaller" horses are only small until they're handed an actual trip. Bruny Boy is the leader type, but this isn't always a keep-leadin-to-win kind of script at 1880m, you need to finish too.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Them's The Breaks (No.9) — $4.80 / $1.72 🏆 WINNER
Bet $14.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$19.60
Prob 26.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.65x
Why The value here is screaming. She can sit back in this pace and then lift late like a door slamming in a rom-com.
2. Don Turboas (No.2) — $4.25 / $1.65 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 20.7% | Place: 63.9% | Value: 1.15x
Why Pace is there, and the excuses are the kind you can bounce from without needing miracles.
3. Bailed (No.5) — $2.33 / $1.20 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.7% | Place: 58.5% | Value: 0.53x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.
Roughie: Last Tremble (No.7) — $10.75 / $2.80 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.4% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.05x
Why Needs the race to set up for a late runner, but if it does, she's the one that can run into your finish.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 1,6,2 / 4,2,1 / 3,1,5 / 9,7,3,4 (108 combos x $0.33 = $35.10) -- 32% flexi
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.

3 - Alkira (Race 6, No.8)✓ Won — $1.25

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Devonport Synthetic on, rail true, and the weather feels like it's dressed for a blizzard, but the track's still set to race like it owes you money. It's a nine-race day with 72 runners and plenty of scratchings, so the script is speed, saves, and being brave in the spots where the pace map actually makes sense.
2, 3 quick vibes before we crack into it:
Azonto in Race 1 looks like the type to nab the right run and hold it, even with thin place numbers. Race 2 is the "one bloke leads, everyone else chases" kind of sprint, and I'm not overthinking it. Then from there, it's a day of lanes, because this synthetic at Devonport can turn a mid-pack run into a rope-a-dope finish if you're sitting in the right pocket.
And yeah, I'll say it, the punters have been a bit trigger-happy in places (Alkira in Race 6 is the obvious one), so I'm chasing the spots where the market's either paying overs or where the safer option actually has the better story.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Devonport Synthetic, 1000m-1880m card
Rail: True
Official going: Synthetic (Firm profile)
Weather: Cloudy, 13°C, gusty as hell, feels like 6.4°C (watch for the cold bite, gusts can make the synthetic feel tricky early)
Early lane guess: Inside to midfield can be gold, but wide runners with cover are dangerous late
Tempo profile: Slow to genuine bursts, depending on the class, with speed holding up more than you'd expect early.
Jockeys to follow:
Christopher Pang: his mounts keep landing in the right part of the track, and when they're offered, they go.
J K Blacker: keeps showing up for the better runs, and there's usually a reason when the price is there.
Anthony Darmanin: knows how to put a runner into the race shape, especially on synthetic.
Stables to respect:
Barry Campbell (1 runner): tends to have them switched on when they've got a clean lane to bowl through.
Angela Brakey (1 runner): quick enough to capitalise when the run turns up, watch her in the open races.
Yassy Nishitani (1 runner): small stable, but when the horse's role is right, they can ping at the finish.
Punty's take:
Devonport Synthetic can be a sneaky bastard, because it's not "mud, therefore anything goes", it's more "geometry and timing". If the pace is genuine, you follow the leader and the stalkers. If it's slow, you ignore the obvious and hunt the runners who can actually travel and then lift late. Today's got both flavours across the card, so I'm building my day like a mixtape, not a single-genre playlist.
The rail is true, so I'm not expecting some miracle rail-only bias. What I do expect is cover to matter. In gusty, cold conditions, horses that can settle and then finish are going to look a lot better than the ones that start scrubbing early.
Now the spine: Race 6 is the chalk, Race 2 is the speed play, and Race 3 has the right mix of class and track comfort to make it dangerous. Then I'll let the chaos kitchen do its thing in the later runs.
What it means for you:
Be aggressive early when the leader shape is obvious, because this synthetic can keep those runs alive for longer than you think. That means Race 2 is a "trust the map" moment, and Race 6 is a "stop overthinking the favourite" moment, because Alkira looks like the one that gets first run at it.
Then protect where place dividends are thin, and don't get fancy just because you can. Race 1 is that classic trap, where the win looks like the main event and the place pool doesn't feel generous. So I'm not screaming at it with extra exposure.
For the bigger multis and sequences, it's tight early legs, then you widen just enough in the open races. The way to survive quaddies is to know which legs are likely to be boring and which ones are going to try to ruin your arvo.
