Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden; 1200m
Map & tempo: moderate pace, leaders stack up early, winners usually come from either the front or the right stalking lane
Punty read: Farset looks like he's doing all the heavy lifting to get into the race early, and on Soft 5 you can't afford to be too far back unless you've got a monster. But I'm going with Yotei because this looks like one of those races where the market wants the obvious leader story, while the horse with the best "keep battling" profile just keeps finding. Watch the first two hundred metres, if Yotei gets a clean run without being trapped wide, she'll be there when the others start rethinking their life choices.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)
1. Yotei (No.12) — $3.52 / $1.50 🏆 2ND
Bet $20.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$20.00
Prob 23.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.17x
Why Big place profile, and she should get the right run to keep rolling through the soft ground.
2. Farset (No.1) — $3.52 / $1.50 🏆 WINNER
Bet $4.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$2.00
Prob 20.7% | Place: 65.9% | Value: 0.63x
Why From barrier 4 she can hold her spot, and if the race stays moderate, he's right in the mix.
3. Speedy Crown (No.5) — $4.70 / $1.62 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.33x
Why I like him, just the place map isn't paying well enough. If the race collapses, he's a danger.
Roughie: No Wallet Reg (No.10) — $16.00 / $3.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.7% | Place: 19.1% | Value: 0.63x
Race type: Maiden; 1200m
Map & tempo: slow pace, so the sprinters get an unfair chance to unload late
Punty read: Oregon Coast is the one I want in my pocket. When the pace is slow, the horse that can race at about midfield and still reel them in on soft turns is deadly. Irreverent is the obvious danger on the right-on-pace map, and Stevie's Spirit is the "don't ignore the favourite-looking one" type if the gaps open. I'm not falling for the backmarkers unless they've got a real late kick, and Oregon Coast looks built for the slot. It's basically the race version of a comedy where everyone else pauses and Oregon Coast sprints through the punchline.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Oregon Coast (No.10) — $1.83 / $1.05 🏆 4TH
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 51.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.23x
Why Slow-tempo advantage, and he gets to strike at the right time without doing too much early.
2. Irreverent (No.2) — $3.52 / $1.22 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.75x
Why A real chance — but at $1.22 the place he's not a saver, he's a punt, and that's not a price I insure at. Watching, not betting.
3. Stevie's Spirit (No.12) — $5.05 / $1.50 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.03x
Why If the leader blinks, she'll be there, but I'm not paying for place hope at this price.
Roughie: Kobability (No.3) — $14.00 / $2.70 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.9% | Place: 29.0% | Value: 0.87x
Why If he fixes his wide trips and lands the right momentum, he can swoop over tired legs.
Race type: Benchmark 65; 1100m
Map & tempo: moderate pace, short sprint, whoever's on the speed gets favoured
Punty read: This is a "don't get stuck" sprint. Whispering Rogue looks like the bloke with the clearest map to be handy early, and in Soft 5 sprints you want a horse that can still quicken through the slop without losing momentum. Vin Santo and Jimmyinthejungle are the main threats, both with the type of form that can put them in the finish if they avoid traffic.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.50 pool)
1. Whispering Rogue (No.5) — $3.40 / $1.45 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $9.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$9.50
Prob 21.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.90x
Why On pace, and he's the sort that doesn't need a perfect racing run to still hit the line hard.
2. Vin Santo (No.9) — $5.60 / $1.75 🏆 2ND
Bet $2.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$1.50
Prob 15.7% | Place: 55.7% | Value: 1.08x
Why He can press and stick, especially if the early speed plays out.
3. Jimmyinthejungle (No.2) — $5.40 / $1.82 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.4% | Place: 54.9% | Value: 1.03x
Why He's right in the mix, but the place pricing doesn't make it worth forcing.
Roughie: Caxton Lass (No.10) — $11.00 / $3.00 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 25.2% | Value: 0.94x
Why Value play type, if there's any congestion error late, she's got each-way style intent.
Race type: Benchmark 65; 2000m
Map & tempo: slow pace, classic distance, so the leaders can survive and the midpack must time the run
Punty read: This one is a long, slow, chewy grind. Possibilities and Empire Of Art look like they can get position, but my top is Wounder because that's the sweet spot here, he gets the right run and Soft 5 usually rewards a patient battler over a distance like this. If the slow pace turns into a sprint for home late, Wounder is the one who keeps taking bites at the line.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Wounder (No.5) — $4.00 / $1.65 🏆 3RD
Bet $10.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.00
Prob 27.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.39x
Why The profile matches the distance and Soft, and he's the kind that wins when everyone else is just hanging on.
2. Possibilities (No.2) — $2.85 / $1.37 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 21.0% | Place: 62.5% | Value: 0.76x
Why Clear fit for this tempo, and he can run a race that lands in the first four without needing luck.
3. Empire Of Art (No.6) — $5.25 / $1.82 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.5% | Place: 62.8% | Value: 1.16x
Why I want him around the trifecta lane, but place at this number isn't the mission.
Roughie: Mosamour (No.11) — $15.25 / $3.70 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.8% | Place: 24.9% | Value: 1.30x
Why If the race sets up for late momentum, she can be one of those weird "where did you come from" stories.
Race type: Class 1; 1700m
Map & tempo: genuine pace, so the leaders get tested early and it turns into a real staying battle
Punty read: Deep Focus is my head over heart here. He's got the right gear going and the setup suits a horse that can sit within striking range while the pace burns off early. Tassorati is the sort to keep coming back and Sweet Pretender is the valuey type if the field stretches. Spot The Aussie is the roughie because when pace is genuine, the ones with the right travel can pick up late.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Deep Focus (No.1) — $3.42 / $1.55 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $10.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.00
Prob 28.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.25x
Why Classy enough to handle the genuine tempo, and Soft 5 suits that steady grinding style.
2. Cantarito (No.6) — $3.17 / $1.50 🏆 WINNER
Bet $5.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$2.50
Prob 16.2% | Place: 68.9% | Value: 0.65x
Why He's live for a place finish, and the pace should give him a clear chance to slot in and run on.
3. Tassorati (No.12) — $7.25 / $2.55 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.6% | Place: 55.9% | Value: 1.16x
Why He can be there late, but I'm not forcing place at rank three when the value is elsewhere.
Roughie: Spot The Aussie (No.5) — $13.25 / $3.50 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.5% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 1.10x
Why Genuine pace can set him up for a late swoop, especially if the field starts to bunch then split.
Race type: Class 5; 1200m
Map & tempo: moderate pace, so the on-pacers get rewarded, but the front runners must hold station
Punty read: Gospel Girl is the one. With her being on pace and the race shape suiting that style, she's the cleanest "get the job done" bet of the midweek hunches. Mishani Crown is the danger on the right run plan too, and True Amor can absolutely run top three if the leaders don't go too hard. Provance is the sneaky place chance.
Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)
1. Gospel Girl (No.3) — $2.75 / $1.25 🏆 WINNER
Bet $17.50 Win — ✓ Won, net +$30.62
Prob 28.5% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.95x
Why She's got the tempo to sit close and the kind of Soft track form that keeps her grinding.
2. Mishani Crown (No.6) — $5.75 / $1.80 🏆 2ND
Bet $6.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$5.20
Prob 17.0% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.18x
Why That price still has meat on the bone for place, and she's drawn to get her chance.
3. True Amor (No.2) — $5.50 / $1.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.6% | Place: 53.8% | Value: 1.03x
Why She can be thereabouts, but I'm not paying for "maybe" at this stake.
Roughie: Exceed Speed (No.5) — $9.75 / $2.60 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.99x
Why If something goes wrong up front, he can run into a gap, but he's not my main plan.
Race type: Class 2; 1350m
Map & tempo: moderate pace, so lead pressers get every chance to stick around
Punty read: Ready For Aimee is the bet I trust most here. The map says she should get on with it, and at this distance that means you're not just "in it", you're dictating how the race is run. Swanfels and El Centro are the two I'm watching as the "if the leader stumbles" options, and Navy Nina is the value trip wire if there's a pocket to save ground.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Ready For Aimee (No.3) — $2.50 / $1.25 🏆 2ND
Bet $14.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$14.00
Prob 29.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.94x
Why Fits the tempo and should get first crack at the front. When they go a bit slow, she turns it into a task.
2. Swanfels (No.14) — $5.80 / $2.10 🏆 3RD
Bet $5.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$5.50
Prob 11.7% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 0.86x
Why Soft ground suits, and if they string out, she can make a good account of herself.
3. El Centro (No.1) — $7.95 / $2.55 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.3% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.14x
Why I respect the form, but the place angle is a bit skinny at the current number.
Roughie: Tam Na Ghar (No.6) — $10.10 / $2.90 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.21x
Why If she gets a clear lane late, she can grab a result. Needs a bit of luck though.
Race type: Class 2; 1350m
Map & tempo: moderate pace, but the leaders have a clear advantage if the race stays tactical
Punty read: Yabby Pump is my top because Soft 5 plus her on-pace profile is exactly the type of recipe that keeps paying. Global Eclipse is the market heartbeat, but I'm leaning into Yabby Pump as the one that can win while still doing the hard work. Cantankerous and Metaphorically are in the "sneaky if the gaps appear" tier, and Weekend Spirit is the outside threat for a surprise place.
Top 3 + Roughie ($19.00 pool)
1. Yabby Pump (No.12) — $4.90 / $1.72
Bet $14.00 Win
Prob 21.5% | Place: 64.7% | Value: 1.28x
Why On pace and built for this Soft ground grind, and the way she profiles suggests she can outbattle the obvious ones.
2. Global Eclipse (No.3) — $3.28 / $1.40
Bet $5.00 Place
Prob 20.8% | Place: 66.4% | Value: 0.83x
Why He'll be prominent and he can absolutely hold a place spot.
3. Metaphorically (No.1) — $5.05 / $1.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.9% | Place: 58.1% | Value: 1.10x
Why This is a real chance to be in the finish, I just don't want to overpay for the place scenario.
Roughie: Weekend Spirit (No.10) — $9.25 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.8% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.99x
Why Can pop into a gap if the tempo shifts, but he's not the spine.

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Ipswich on a Soft 5, rail pinned at 8m and the track's gonna demand you pick the right section of the ride. It's one of those days where the good horses get the run, the ordinary ones get buried, and the smart punters get paid like they planned it. I'm here for chaos too, but only the kind that still goes close.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Ipswich, sprint to classic 1100-2000m card
Rail: 8 metres Entire Course
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play Fair on speed, real grind for blinkers-on types)
Weather: Sunny, 22C, nil rain, but gusty (watch for early confidence, horses saving ground early)
Early lane guess: inside-mid where leaders can tuck, then sprint wider on the straight
Tempo profile: moderate to slow early, then the field starts moving when they see daylight
Jockeys to follow:
Cejay Graham: Knows how to place his ponies for a late run on wet-ish decks
Ben E Thompson: solid ride style, keeps horses honest and closer than people think
Ryan Maloney: if there's tempo to track and hold, he's usually got the right timing
Stables to respect:
C J Waller (multiple): the "turn up and let it run" approach often shows up under soft conditions
C J Waller's mates, Chris & Corey Munce (multiple): when the market backs their horses, it usually means the horse has been doing the work
R L Heathcote (multiple): gear changes and patience, then they're flying late when others are still winding up
Punty's take:
Ipswich Soft 5 is a funny bastard, it makes the "best" horses feel like they need one extra gear change to get rolling, but it also rewards class and clean trips. So I'm not chasing random fireworks, I'm chasing the ones that can hit a rhythm early, then hold their chance when the track starts to steal metres.
The big theme today is pace you can actually rely on. In the sprints, if a horse maps to be handy, they'll bank positions instead of getting shuffled into the coffin. In the longer race, it's the same deal but slower, the leaders get sticky and the midpack can swoop if they avoid getting bottled up.
And yep, there's value on the card too. Some of my roughies aren't there for sentiment, they're there because the market or the recent pattern suggests they're being judged on the wrong thing.
What it means for you:
Be aggressive in the races where the top contenders have a clear run plan. That's where your money actually turns into a result. Then protect yourself in the chaos races by using the place angle or by spreading in the lanes, because Soft 5 punishes single-lane heroics.
My spine is three winners that I want to see hit the front or press it early. If they do their job, the multi goes from "nice idea" to "oh shit we're collecting". For everything else, you'll see I've got a roughie route too. Not to be a mug, to catch the moment when the race shape opens up.
