✗ MISS -$15 Final

Race type: Benchmark, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, on-pace styles can still win, but it's about who gets first clear air
Punty read:
This looks like it's going to be a little bit of a slug, and when it's a slug at 1200m, the first proper runner to find a gap turns it into a race. The Obvious Child (No.4) is the one I want in my pocket, because she's shortening up in the market and the visor first time tells me the rider is going to look for a cleaner hit of tempo. Angry Berdi (No.5) can absolutely get involved if she avoids being swamped from that barrier, and Leading Ride (No.2) is the type that can run well, just needs luck from a slow-start vibe.

The danger? Edwardian (No.1) has market support, gear up, and sometimes these new-looking ones do the "boss level debut" thing on soft tracks.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. The Obvious Child (No.4) — $2.65 / $1.50 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 35.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.14x
Why She's the class angle with the right soft footing, and the visor first time points to a sharper go. This is the kind of short-course race where she gets to the right part of the track and keeps her feet.

2. Angry Berdi (No.5) — $4.40 / $2.05 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.4% | Place: 47.0% | Value: 1.11x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.

3. Leading Ride (No.2) — $3.30 / $1.65 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.4% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.66x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.

Roughie: Edwardian (No.1) — $26.00 / $5.00 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.8% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.89x
Why The path is simple, just needs a big gear spark and the leaders to get tangled. If it doesn't, she runs into the same soft-ground traffic problem.

✗ MISS -$14 Final

Race type: Maiden Plate, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, on-pace types can get a position, then it turns into who stays the best
Punty read:
Maiden 1400m on Soft 5 is a great time for a horse who can sit midpack and keep improving. Blazing Red (No.1) gets my respect, because the form says she's been close enough, and the track is the kind that rewards those grinders. Mahaler (No.12) is the logical follow with the handicap weight break and the "he can place in this field" profile.

The outside danger is Red Ripples (No.7) if she finds a lane, but Ullrich (No.8) is also on my radar as a show-up type. The wildcard vibe is Caesour's Tomb and Ochre Spirit if the market flips again, but I'm not starting there.

Top 3 + Roughie ($22.00 pool)

1. Blazing Red (No.1) — $3.50 / $1.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet $17.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$17.00
Prob 25.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.17x
Why She's the right kind of maiden to trust on Soft 5, she's in the mix early enough, and she looks like she's due for a breakthrough with no drama.

2. Mahaler (No.12) — $4.00 / $1.70 🏆 WINNER
Bet $5.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$3.50
Prob 17.7% | Place: 59.7% | Value: 0.75x
Why This is a place-and-profit role. If she gets even a slightly better run, she can slot into the top few and grind it out.

3. Largs Legacy (No.10) — $6.50 / $2.35 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.3% | Place: 39.3% | Value: 0.74x
Why Third line of the market is where place bets go to die slowly — the ledger says so at every price. He carries the exotics and the watch list, not the bankroll.

Roughie: Ullrich (No.8) — $9.00 / $2.75 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.0% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 1.33x
Why Roughie route is simple, needs luck from that gate and a clean finish lane to sneak into the placings. If the race falls apart, she's got a chance.

✗ MISS -$22 Final

Race type: Maiden Plate, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, winners are usually the ones who can keep the momentum through the middle
Punty read:
Winston's Pride (No.7) is my lead pencil. He's the sort who can sit midfield and still have enough left to make the last 200m a negotiation. The big thing here is avoiding the "stuck wide, then too late" nightmare. Or Am I (No.11) is the one who can reward you with a value win if he gets a clean run and doesn't get boxed in, and Mandarin (No.10) is a genuine "place chance with a poke" type.

The roughie Miraland (No.6) is a longshot but I like the gear angle, because when blinkers show up and they actually focus, sometimes the backmarkers suddenly look like they've been hiding a motor.

Top 3 + Roughie ($22.00 pool)

1. Winston's Pride (No.7) — $2.45 / $1.25 🏆 3RD
Bet $17.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$17.00
Prob 30.8% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.82x
Why He's the class and the ride that can keep travelling. On soft ground, the horses who can keep rhythm are the ones that spring the surprise.

2. Last Weeks Pay (No.9) — $3.70 / $1.57 🏆 4TH
Bet $5.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$5.00
Prob 23.3% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.99x
Why This is his value: even without winning, he's got the staying power to snag a spot. If the pace doesn't explode, he'll be there.

3. Or Am I (No.11) — $7.50 / $2.45 🏆 8TH

Roughie: Miraland (No.6) — $10.00 / $2.70 🏆 11TH

Prob 9.2% | Place: 36.6% | Value: 1.08x

✗ MISS -$17 Final

Race type: Maiden Plate, 900m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, it's who gets positioned early and holds it through the slop
Punty read:
This is a sprint where the start matters a lot, because on soft, the leaders can go a touch too hard early and still feel like they're in front at the turn. Snobz (No.14) is the best on paper for keeping contact early, and Atomic Time (No.1) is the one that can make it a proper race with tongue tie showing up for sharpness.

Buffo (No.2) is hard to dismiss, but it's more about value and risk balancing in this field. Son Of Cocoa (No.4) is your roughie type, the one that can go from nowhere to sneaking in if the pace sets up messy.

Top 3 + Roughie ($24.00 pool)

1. Snobz (No.14) — $2.30 / $1.25 🏆 3RD
Bet $20.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$20.00
Prob 27.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.83x
Why Concussion plates front first time and a short-course map style. In a fast 900m, you need speed and a clean action, and Snobz looks like the "do the job" option.

2. Atomic Time (No.1) — $4.40 / $1.75 🏆 2ND
Bet $4.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$3.00
Prob 17.2% | Place: 59.0% | Value: 0.63x
Why He's got the place credentials, tongue tie off first time might sharpen him up, and he should be in the thick of it early.

3. Buffo (No.2) — $4.80 / $1.82 🏆 6TH

Bet Tracked
Prob 4.5% | Place: 18.0% | Value: 1.41x

✗ MISS -$32 Final

Race type: Handicap, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, value horses are usually the ones who sit mid and pounce late
Punty read:
Magic Island (No.9) is the standout for me because the handicap profile looks like it sets up for a late finish and the market hasn't fully committed. Torrita (No.8) is your tactical place and potentially win if the pace doesn't collapse, and Frontpoint (No.7) is the roughie that can jump into the top few late.

This is one of those races where you want your money in the right lane at the right time, not scattered everywhere like confetti. If the soft track slows the leaders just enough, No.9 gets to the outside and keeps going.

Top 3 + Roughie ($31.50 pool)

1. Magic Island (No.9) — $8.00 / $2.75 🏆 7TH
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 15.3% | Place: 40.4% | Value: 1.60x
Why It's the kind of value win where the finish is the story. If the leaders start walking the last 400m, he's got the legs to pick them off.

2. Torrita (No.8) — $3.60 / $1.65 🏆 8TH
Bet $16.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$16.50
Prob 16.0% | Place: 56.6% | Value: 0.69x
Why She maps to be in range. Midfield trip, then she's there when it matters, which is what Soft 5 handicaps love.

3. Blue Isles (No.12) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 3RD

Bet Tracked

Durham (No.3) is the bet I like, because at this distance you want the horse that can keep travelling without needing to throw sparks early. Belle From Hell (No.9) is a place play with the soft-track grind in her favour, and Bit Of A Rebel (No.1) is the type that can run a cheeky race if he finds a stalking spot.

Prickly Poppy (No.12) is the roughie, and this is exactly the sort of day she can pop into a first-four scenario if the leaders get tired in the slop. But I'm not making her the spine.

Chance Taken (No.9) is my best bet in a race where soft-ground fitness matters and the finish will sort the pretenders from the real grinders. Tottori (No.3) has the value profile, and if the tempo doesn't run away from them, she can make it a proper result. Hamner Springs (No.7) is the place and possible saver type with the on-pace style and the right kind of patience.

The roughie Take A Pick (No.4) is live if she gets into a comfortable pocket, because the market and class profile suggest she's got an actual role here.

Star Casino (No.1) is the one to lead the brigade. She has that on-pace style that suits Soft 5, and the barrier gives her a head start into the race structure. Final Countdown (No.7) is a genuine alternative, and she's been the type to hang around in the right part of the contest, which is money at 1400m.

She's Ternacious (No.4) looks like the one the market leans on, but I'm using her as a win anchor only indirectly and letting the places do the heavy lifting.

Fashion Dog (No.10) is the value roughie, and if you're chasing a longer shot to fill a gap when runners get bogged, she's got the profile.

This is the race where 1000m turns into a demolition derby if you're backmarker and it's soft. Truly Elsa (No.9) is the best value winner option, and she has the finishing profile to snag it if she gets even halfway decent position. Garcon Renard (No.5) is the market mover type and can absolutely place, but I'm not chasing him for win unless he's given the run.

Welcome Gypsy (No.7) is a place and show-up type, and Four On The Floor (No.3) is the roughie with the perfect "if the gap appears, boom" path.

Punty's Early Mail

Rightio Loose Units, Murray Bridge on a Soft 5 with the rail jammed out +5m. That's the recipe for front-runners getting a head start and everyone else scrambling for room like it's a nightclub line at 1am. Pace is there, but it's not a conveyor belt, it's more like a drunken mate trying to carry a tray of beers.

Today I want you thinking simple, race-shape over ego. My spine has three horses in different races that look like they belong on the pace or the right part of the track, then we spritz in a roughie each way where the value is hiding in plain sight. If you follow it like a shopping list, you'll be right in the hunt even when one of these maidens decides to do something weird (because they always do).

Now, let's get stuck into it, Race 1 down to the Gold Cup-style chaos all the way to the end.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Murray Bridge GH, 1000-1800m card
Rail: +5m Entire
Official going: Soft 5 (expected to play Middle-ground + on-pace)
Weather: Cloudy, 14°C, watch for wet gusts, 25% chance of rain, light rain risk
Early lane guess: A mix of leaders holding on and stalkers earning their keep, but the rail-out makes midpack snuck-around tactics very live
Tempo profile: Slow to moderate early, then it stretches out. Soft ground means finishing power matters, but only if you're not stuck in traffic.
Jockeys to follow:
Jake Toeroek: Quiet assassin vibes, often gets them into the right spot without making it a spectacle.
Connor Murtagh: Good hands when it gets awkward, and today looks like there's plenty of "awkward".
Todd Pannell: Can travel and pounce, and he tends to get his turn at the right time.
Stables to respect:
Garret Lynch (8 runners): They're popping up across multiple races, usually with runners that can handle the wet grind.
P A Preusker (4 runners): Their horses show up fitter than the odds suggest, especially in the handicap wars.
Michael Hickmott (2 runners): When they bring one, it usually has a reason for being there, and today's conditions suit that style.

Punty's take:

Soft 5 with the rail out is basically a permission slip for runners to go around the outside and still have a crack. You can get away with sitting closer than you'd do on top of the track, because the footing slows the whole field down and keeps them honest. That suits on-pace types in the short races, and midfield workmen in the longer ones who can pick lanes late.

I'm also watching for "first gear upgrade" situations. In races where Blinkers, winkers, visors or nose bands first time appear, it's usually about sharpening focus or fixing behaviour. In soft ground, if they settle just that bit better, the finishing burst actually arrives instead of being swallowed by the mud.

What it means for you is you should be aggressive where the leaders have a map job, and protective where the pace might get sticky and create banged-up traffic. The Gold Cup-type races (1800s) tend to punish wide, caught-out runs, so we'll respect the midfield horses who can stalk without gambling their position.

What it means for you:

Your bet plan today is a spine and a safety net. Back the Big 3 to win in the races they're locked in, because each one fits a different "how it wins" story: one is the class and readiness play, one is the pace setter with a strong finishing lane, one is the grinder with the best chance to keep travelling.

Then we use the roughies like tools, not prayers. The roughie can win if the race collapses the right way, or if the leader line gets bottlenecked and the value horse finds daylight. Don't overthink it, just follow the script, and when it comes in you'll be stoked instead of "why did I swerve that".

If you want the quick note on aggressiveness: Race 1 and Race 3 are where the tight shape matters, Race 6 and Race 7 are where the handicap grinding decides it, and Races 8 and 9 are for value seekers who don't mind a bit of spice.
