Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Sale, head to https://punty.ai/tips/sale-2026-10-25
Rightio Ticket Munchers, Sale is a Good 4 with the rain circling all afternoon and nine races from 1000m out to 2200m. The speed is spread across the card like a Sunday arvo sausage sizzle, and the pace is slow in the first and last races, so the sprinters get a sit while the staying races turn into a bit of a bun fight. Grab a coffee, keep the ticket dry, and let's get into it.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Sale, 1000m to 2200m card
Rail: True Entire Circuit
Official going: Good 4 (rain risk 50%+ at 11:00, 14:00, 17:00, 20:00 and 23:00)
Weather: Raining, gusts 7.4km/h
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Races 1 and 9 are slow, Races 2 to 6 and Race 8 are moderate, and Race 7 is the only genuine pace race on the card with El Rocko as the clear leader.
Jockeys to follow:
Luke Currie: Eight rides on the card, including Enxuto in Race 7 and Hotspur Reale in Race 6, so he's in more of the meat than anyone.
Beau Mertens: Seven rides, with Chest Of Gold on the lead in Race 8 and Freedom Rally in Race 7 among them.
Michael Dee: Seven rides, including Makdane in Race 7, who is my second pick there and a live chance to sit in behind the leader.
Stables to respect:
C Maher (7 runners): Julius Maximus in Race 3 and Ten Commandments in Race 7 are two of the best prices on the card, and Cab Franc is in the same race as the first.
C J Waller (5 runners): Tanabata in Race 4 is the one I'd be watching, with Jean Georges and Bureau also on the list.
Ben, Will & Jd Hayes (4 runners): Hello Romeo in Race 6 is the one I respect, and he's a Race 6 pick I'm keeping on the side without a bet.
Punty's take:
The speed is the story today, and the map says it's loud in only one race. Race 7 has El Rocko on the lead, Charterhouse and Makdane on the speed, and a whole mob of midfielders who will be dreaming of the front. The other eight races are more of a tempo puzzle, and in most of them the horses that can grab a cheap trip are the horses that can sit and wait for the pace to drop off. Races 1 and 9 are the slow ones, and those are where a backmarker has to find a gap in a crowd that isn't going anywhere in a hurry.
Race 3 is the banker race, with Julius Maximus on the speed at $1.70 and a clear run to the lead against a field that doesn't have anything quick enough to chase him. Race 5 and Race 8 are the chaos merchants. Race 5 has no standout, and Race 8 has two $3.00 favourites and nothing much to separate them. Race 6 and Race 9 have a bit of pace but a lot of heavy support on the top lines, so the value is in the middle of the market.
What it means for you:
Be aggressive in Race 3 with Julius Maximus, because the speed map is clean and he's the one who'll take up the running. Race 1 is a cheap look at Loaded, but he's a $1.85 price and he's backmarker, so I'm keeping the stake sensible. Race 4 is where the money goes on Feeling Dusty each way, because the Race 4 market is open enough to pay a bit more than the place.
Protect your bankroll in Race 5, Race 7 and Race 8. They are the races where the place is worth more than the win, and the wide-open fields will humble anyone who gets greedy. Keep the tickets tight and don't chase the roughies, because the roughies on this card are long shots that need the whole field to fall over.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
1 - Loaded (Race 1, No.2) — $1.85
Why The market has taken him from $2.40 to $1.85, and the Win number is the highest on the card at 43.4%. He's the anchor and I'm not talking myself out of him at the short price.
2 - Julius Maximus (Race 3, No.6) — $1.70
Why Firmed from $2.00 to $1.70, on the speed in a moderate pace, and his last start was a 3rd at Cranbourne 1200m, beaten 0.7L. He's the only horse in his race who can take the lead without a fight.
3 - Yes Yoshi (Race 9, No.7) — $3.50
Why First-up record is 1:1-0-0 and he's been off for 147 days, which is a long way from being a rusty mess. He's won 2 from 4 on Good, and I like a horse who's fit off a spell in a slow race.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × 11.01 = $110.10
Race 1 – Ladbrokes Switch Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace. Big Kapow (ON-PACE) and Trouble'n Paradise (ON-PACE) are the ones who'll go forward. Loaded (BACKMARKER) and Heavy Is The Head (BACKMARKER) sit back, Incoherent (MIDFIELD) and Silver Lightning (MIDFIELD) are in the middle, and Armorware (BACKMARKER) is on the disadvantaged list.
Punty read: Loaded is the one I've got $15 on at $1.85, and he's the first pick for a reason. His only start on record is a 2nd on the Synthetic, the market has backed him in from $2.40, and the Win number is the best in the race. The slow pace means the speed on Big Kapow and Trouble'n Paradise will try to take the sting out, but Loaded's backmarker run doesn't scare me much in a field this weak. Incoherent is the danger at $8.00 with a place figure that makes me want to watch, and Big Kapow has a couple of wide and held-up excuses from his last runs, so he's a horse to watch in the first 200m.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Loaded (No.2) — $1.85 / $1.15
Bet $15.00 Win, return $27.75
Prob 43.4% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why The market has him in, the form is the right colour, and nothing in this field has shown more. He's the one to beat.
2. Incoherent (No.6) — $8.00 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.94x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.60 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Big Kapow (No.1) — $9.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why ON-PACE in a slow race, which is the right spot for him, and his last two runs were both held up or raced wide. Dangerous if he gets the run he's been denied.
Roughie: Trouble'n Paradise (No.4) — $13.00 / $3.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.5% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers go on for the first time and Winkers come off again, and his last start was a 3rd at Bendigo. He's ON-PACE in a slow race, so if the speed gets stuck up front he's the one to slip into the back of the pack and sneak through.
Race 2 – Grassdale Estate Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Silky Seth (ON-PACE), Castelli In Aria (ON-PACE), Jupiter's Girl (ON-PACE), Quemax (ON-PACE) and Gypsy Moon (ON-PACE) are the ones on the speed. Rough Enuff (BACKMARKER) and Abydos (BACKMARKER) sit back, and Angling Angel and Goodness are MIDFIELD.
Punty read: The one I've got money on is Rough Enuff at $3.50, and I'm not pretending the map is kind to him. He's a BACKMARKER and this is a moderate pace with the speed on the front, so he needs the pace to come back to him. He's been backed from $4.40 to $3.50 with the money coming, and his last start was a 2nd at Seymour 1200m beaten 1L. Angling Angel and Goodness are the value horses in the middle, and Silky Seth on the speed is the one who could steal it if the field stops for breath.
Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)
1. Rough Enuff (No.6) — $3.50 / $1.62
Bet $8.50 Win, return $29.75
Prob 20.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why The market is firm on him and his last-start run was good enough to be right in this. He's a fair price for a horse with a T-HOT trainer record across the last 100.
2. Angling Angel (No.9) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Goodness (No.12) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why A 2nd at Caulfield Heath 1500m and a 3rd at Bendigo 1300m in the form, and the sectionals say L600 fastest. He's a sensible third in a race with a few wide-open edges.
Roughie: Silky Seth (No.7) — $10.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.8% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.68x Steady since tip
Why ON-PACE in a moderate race, and he's been 2nd at Geelong 1447m with a 3rd at Geelong 1325m before that. If the speed collapses up front he's the one who'll be sitting outside the leader.
Race 3 – Kustom Steel Fabrication Mdn Plate
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Julius Maximus (ON-PACE), Written Velocity (ON-PACE), Civic Square (ON-PACE) and Boutin (ON-PACE) are the ones on the speed. Majestic Flyer (BACKMARKER), Blue And Gold (BACKMARKER), Tagged (BACKMARKER) and Bureau (BACKMARKER) sit back. Sisterly and Cab Franc are MIDFIELD.
Punty read: Julius Maximus is the banker at $1.70 and the one I'm happy to bet on. He's on the speed in a moderate race, the market has firmed him from $2.00, and his last start was a 3rd at Cranbourne 1200m beaten 0.7L. The danger is Majestic Flyer, who has been on the market and was a 2nd at Bendigo 1300m beaten 0.1L, and he's a backmarker who will need the pace to fall apart up front. Sisterly is the value in the middle, and Cab Franc is the roughie who is drifting from $10.00 to $12.00.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Julius Maximus (No.6) — $1.70 / $1.13
Bet $13.00 Win, return $22.10
Prob 37.0% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.63x Steady since tip
Why On the speed, cleanest run in the race, and the market has come to him. A short price, but the right horse at it.
2. Majestic Flyer (No.7) — $3.70 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.4% | Place: 56.8% | Value: 0.75x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Sisterly (No.14) — $9.00 / $2.75
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.87x Steady since tip
Why MIDFIELD, with a Cranbourne 1200m 5th and a Caulfield Heath 1100m 4th in the recent form. Honest enough to run a place.
Roughie: Cab Franc (No.2) — $12.00 / $3.30
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.97x Steady since tip
Why Cab Franc is a MIDFIELD runner trained by C Maher, who has the top pick in the race, and he's a 3rd at Cranbourne 1400m last start. If the favourite gets caught out wide, he's the one sitting handy to pounce.
Race 4 – Ladbrokes Mega Multi (Bm66)
Race type: Benchmark 66, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Mount Sabyinyo (ON-PACE), Belcony (ON-PACE), Grand Sage (ON-PACE) and Neck High (ON-PACE) are on the speed. Feeling Dusty (BACKMARKER), Crown Crusher (BACKMARKER) and Epeiric (BACKMARKER) sit back. Tanabata, Wounder and Overpriced are MIDFIELD.
Punty read: Feeling Dusty is the staked horse at $3.70, and I'm having a bet each way because the place is the sweeter part of the ticket here. He's a BACKMARKER in a moderate race, and he's 2 wins from his 9 starts, with a record of 2-3-1 that says he's a horse who is in the finish all the time. He's 2kg down from last start and the trainer is at 11.3% at the track, which is a fair chunk. Mount Sabyinyo on the speed is the one to beat if the pace holds. Tanabata is the one with a fresh Kyneton win and a horse who likes the shape of this race.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Feeling Dusty (No.1) — $3.80 / $1.60
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $35.10 if it wins ($24.70 win + $10.40 place), $10.40 if it only places
Prob 24.7% | Place: 50.2% | Value: 0.94x Steady since tip
Why He's a 2-wins-from-9 horse who's 2kg down from last start and runs well at this trip, so each way is the right way to back him.
2. Mount Sabyinyo (No.2) — $3.50 / $1.52
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.2% | Place: 62.5% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Tanabata (No.8) — $5.50 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.64x Steady since tip
Why Kyneton 1454m winner last start, and he's MIDFIELD in a moderate race, which is the right place to be if the leaders get reeled in.
Roughie: Crown Crusher (No.4) — $21.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.6% | Place: 22.7% | Value: 0.97x Steady since tip
Why He's a BACKMARKER with a 6-4-3 career record and a 4-1-2 mark over this distance, and he's a horse who will need the leaders to come back to him. Long shot, so keep your expectations in check.
Race 5 – Fantasy Cocktails (Bm66)
Race type: Benchmark 66, 2200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Slane (ON-PACE), Saxon Blood (ON-PACE), Chocolate Royal (ON-PACE) and Just Dance (ON-PACE) are on the speed. Navy Heart, Tishman, So Brave, Wolfess and Cable Dancer are MIDFIELD. Icaro, Pure Grunt and Ninyo are BACKMARKER.
Punty read: Navy Heart is the staked horse at $4.40, and I'm putting $6 on him to win. He's a MIDFIELD runner in a 2200m race and is trained by C Maher with Jabez Johnstone aboard, and the combo at the track is 22.4% from 44 rides, which is a fair chunk. He's been backed from $5.00 to $4.40 and the Win percentage is the best in the race. Tishman is the one who has been heavily backed from $9.50 to $6.50 and is the danger in the middle. Icaro is a horse with a fresh blinkers off and a nose roll on, and he's the roughie who could sneak in if the leaders run out of petrol.
Top 3 + Roughie ($6.00 pool)
1. Navy Heart (No.9) — $4.60 / $1.85
Bet $6.00 Win, return $27.60
Prob 15.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.73x Steady since tip
Why The Win number is the best in the race, the jockey combo is strong at the track, and he's a MIDFIELD runner who will be handy at the bend.
2. Tishman (No.4) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.4% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.81x Steady since tip

3. Saxon Blood (No.10) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.0% | Place: 27.9% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why ON-PACE and his last start was a 2nd at Manangatang 2000m. He's the on-pace runner who can sit and wait if the speed is shared.
Roughie: Icaro (No.6) — $9.00 / $3.00
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 30.3% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers come off for the first time and a nose roll goes on. He's a BACKMARKER, so he needs the leaders to tire, and his sectionals say L400 fastest.
Race 6 – Irwin Stockfeeds (Bm66)
Race type: Benchmark 66, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Fehmarn (ON-PACE), Hello Romeo (ON-PACE), Mr Tickles (ON-PACE), Nordic Strike (ON-PACE), Crank (ON-PACE) and Inside Man (ON-PACE) are on the speed. Go To Hollywood, Walter Spur and Laura's Gold are BACKMARKER. Mckeyla, Blue Humma, Hotspur Reale and Soju are MIDFIELD.
Punty read: Fehmarn is the staked horse at $4.80, and I'm putting $10.50 on him to win. He's ON-PACE in a 1000m sprint and his last start was a 1st at Cranbourne 1000m. He has a Dist 4:3-0-0 record and a Good 1:1-0-0 mark, and the price is generous enough for a horse this good over the trip. Hello Romeo is the danger on the speed, and Hotspur Reale in the middle is the one who's been backed in from the early market.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Fehmarn (No.1) — $5.00 / $1.95
Bet $10.50 Win, return $52.50

Bet Tracked
Prob 6.6% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.66x Steady since tip

Punty read: Ten Commandments is the staked horse at $3.10, and I'm putting $13 on him to win. He's a MIDFIELD runner in a genuine pace race, which is the right spot for a horse who can sit in the bunch and pounce, and his last start was a 1st at Ballarat 1600m. Makdane is the danger on the speed, and Enxuto is a BACKMARKER who needs the pace to be genuine. El Rocko will get every chance up front, and his Win number is still a sniff at 14.9%. Haaracaine is the roughie who has been backed in from $15.00 to $9.50 and won his last start at Ballarat.

His last start was a 3rd at Seymour 1400m beaten 0.9L, and he's a horse who will sit back and let the leaders fight it out. Cardamom has drifted from $4.80 to $6.00 and is the one to watch in the middle, and Blankfield is the danger on the 2nd up form. SEQUENCE LANES
EARLY QUADDIE (R2–R5)
Smart: 6,12,9,7 / 6,7,14,2 / 2,1,8,6 / 9,4,6,10 (256 combos x $0.30 = $76.80) -- 30% flexi
Punty's take: Race 3 is the tight leg on Julius Maximus, but Races 2, 4 and 5 are all open enough to keep the ticket wide. This sits above the 30% flexi floor, but it's a three-open-legs ticket, so treat it as entertainment with a sting.
QUADDIE (R6–R9)
Smart: 1,2,10,12 / 3,5,9,11 / 12,8,15,13 / 7,8,10 (192 combos x $0.33854 = $65.00) -- 33.9% flexi
Punty's take: Race 8 is the tightest leg with two horses at $3.00 and the rest open, while Races 6, 7 and 9 are wide. Short-priced winners rarely pay, so the ticket needs a $5 to $10 winner somewhere to really go.
BIG 6 (R4–R9)
Smart: 2,1,8,6 / 9,4,6,10 / 1,2,10,12 / 3,5,9,11 / 12,8,15,13 / 7,8,10,1 (4096 combos x $0.00122 = $5.00) -- 0.12% flexi
Punty's take: Six open legs and 4096 combos on a $5 outlay, so this is a pure lottery ticket and I'm treating it as entertainment only. It clears the 0.10% Big 6 floor, but it's a long shot and I won't pretend otherwise.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Blinkers go on for the roughie
Trouble'n Paradise has Blinkers: ON (first time) and Winkers: OFF (again) today, and his last start was a 3rd at Bendigo. He's ON-PACE in a slow race, so the change could help him settle.
2 - The first-up winner is 147 days off
Yes Yoshi is 1st-up 1:1-0-0 and has been off 147 days, and the market hasn't moved him. He's the one who will tell us whether the spell worked.
3 - Grand Sage takes 9kg off
Grand Sage at $61.00 is 9kg down from his last start, and the form line says best at heavier weights. He's a long shot who wouldn't be on my ticket, but he's the cheeky one to watch.
FINAL WORD FROM THE RATBAG REPORT
Sale is a card for patient punters and the ones who can read a speed map without falling asleep. Keep the stakes honest, back the horses I've put the money on, and let the rest of the card entertain you from the bench.
