Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1000m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace, Codename led. The track story is simple, find a spot early and don't get trapped behind the wrong horse.
Punty read:
Codename (No.2) looks like the one to get the jump and dictate the tempo. This is a maiden at 1000m, so you can get away with being a bit lucky, but you cannot get away with being awkward. Codename's speed map has it sitting in the driver's seat, and the market has already told you it expects the same script.
Defy Gravity (No.3) is the danger because it can cover ground and it's had interference-based excuses, the good kind too, the kind that usually comes back out better. Brazen Martini (No.1) has a tongue tie back again, which can wake a horse up, but at this price, you want the race to collapse in front of it and that's a tough ask.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Codename (No.2) — $1.67 / $1.05 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$10.05
Prob 31.6% | Place: 68.0% | Value: 0.98x
Why On pace to control the tempo, and when the market starts sprinting towards a horse that short, it usually means it's the real deal.
2. Defy Gravity (No.3) — $3.95 / $1.60 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 32.2% | Place: 67.8% | Value: 1.77x
Why Big value if you're willing to risk the win-only, and it has interference excuses plus the right kind of running style.
3. Renege (No.5) — $3.80 / $1.60 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 30.0% | Place: 64.4% | Value: 0.97x
Why Can race on and run into the money, but it's a touch too "fine" rather than "must-win" for this ticket.
Roughie: Brazen Martini (No.1) — $24.00 / $4.40 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.8% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.81x
Why Needs the race to fall apart and for luck to go its way, otherwise it's just chasing tempo and hoping for a miracle.
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, Blackjack and Fram Strait have the speed advantage types. This one sets up for leaders to hold the line.
Punty read:
This is a two-horse story unless someone's got hidden talent and a secret map. Blackjack (No.1) is the early speed with barrier 1, which at Mildura often means you get the run with minimal fuss. It also resumed with gear changes for a new stable, so you take that seriously, especially when it goes on pace.
Bold Jester (No.2) is the other half of the story. It also wants to be handy, and the market isn't treating it like a long shot, so we respect it as the main threat. I'm leaving the others because the pace profile says "on the speed or get walked past".
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Blackjack (No.1) — $2.24 / $1.22 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$18.60
Prob 39.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.07x
Why Barrier 1 plus on pace, it's set up to get every chance to control the race.
2. Bold Jester (No.2) — $2.00 / $1.20 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 39.6% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.48x
Why The value is stronger here, and it looks like it's close enough to win, especially if the leader gets pressured.
3. Impending Fury (No.4) — $17.00 / $4.40 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.4% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.90x
Why Big price, but the pace set-up is probably too honest for a late swooper to steal it.
Roughie: Hair Toss (No.8) — $16.00 / $4.50 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.3% | Place: 14.1% | Value: 1.19x
Why Can fill a spot if it gets a clean run, but for the win, it's still a prayer more than a plan.
Race type: Maiden Plate, 1400m
Map & tempo: Hot pace. The leaders want to go early, and if they keep going, you'll see the right sort of stalkers hit the line.
Punty read:
Full Display (No.7) is the one to anchor your bet. It's got the profile of a horse that's been building, and at $1.45 it's basically daring you to be brave. Magic Machine (No.8) is the overlay threat because it's got the right pace factors helping it, plus new gear in play, blinkers and all that first-time nonsense that can sharpen a horse right up.
French Palace (No.6) is the value on the place lanes, because it's an improver type with distance on its side, but this still looks like a two-runner kind of fight unless something wild happens behind them. Mr Zeus (No.3) is the roughie profile, all pace early, but it's also the kind of runner that can get over-ridden when it's had its issues.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Full Display (No.7) — $1.45 / $1.03 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 37.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.90x
Why Hot pace scenario works, it's got the form feel and the right settle to keep digging.
2. Magic Machine (No.8) — $3.40 / $1.40 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 36.0% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.24x
Why Blinkers on first time can wake it up, and it gets the pace picture to hit the line.
3. French Palace (No.6) — $7.00 / $2.35 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.5% | Place: 40.8% | Value: 1.32x
Why Distance and gear direction screams improver, keep it in your exotics if you're chasing value.
Roughie: Mr Zeus (No.3) — $23.00 / $4.00 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.1% | Place: 12.2% | Value: 0.41x
Why It's got speed, but the wobble in recent runs means you need everything to go its way.
Race type: BM56, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, but the key is Listening Is Doing and Sunday Fun Day have the "go-forward" profiles. Still, the race is won by those who don't lose ground early.
Punty read:
Grande Terre (No.1) is the banker lane without being boring. It's a pacer type, and the resume for a new stable is clean enough to trust, especially when it's already proven it can win around here. The big thing in a 1000m BM is staying in the race, not doing laps of the universe.
Girls Night (No.2) and Tornado's Sister (No.7) are the must-have place types because they can hit the right spot, then keep going. I like the way the pace situation sets up, if Girls Night settles just off the right horses, she can box-seat and run through. Tornado's Sister is the kind of runner who doesn't need to lead to be a threat.
Top 3 + Roughie ($20.50 pool)
1. Grande Terre (No.1) — $3.10 / $1.45 🏆 WINNER
Bet $5.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$13.50
Prob 31.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.27x
Why It's got the speed map and the resume pattern looks like a real bounce, plus it's already won here.
2. Girls Night (No.2) — $5.50 / $1.95 🏆 3RD
Bet $10.00 Place — ✓ Won, net +$9.50
Prob 16.9% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.19x
Why Resuming but can come to hand quickly, and the tactical pace here suits a grinder to the line.
3. Tornado's Sister (No.7) — $7.00 / $2.25 🏆 2ND
Bet $5.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$6.88
Prob 13.1% | Place: 56.2% | Value: 1.18x
Why On pace enough to be involved early, and it's the value type for a place in a sprint field.
Roughie: Listening Is Doing (No.3) — $9.80 / $3.00 🏆 7TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.4% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 1.05x
Why Needs more luck than the others, and the place probability is thin for what we want from a roughie.
Race type: BM56, 1900m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, enough for on-pacers to stay honest over the longer 1900m.
Punty read:
This is one of those races where the market favourite has to be respected, but you still want to grab value in the place lane. Verona Rupes (No.1) is the main pick, and the cross-over nose band first time is the kind of gear tweak that can fix a concentration issue and get it finishing off cleaner.
Divine Fire (No.10) is right in the mix, but I'm not trying to over-complicate it. Eau De Cologne (No.3) is the main place threat, it's been racing well and the step to grass is the only real question, but it doesn't look like a throwaway.
The danger is the long chaos tail, where one backmarker sneaks into the money when the field starts sprinting mid-race, but I'm keeping the roughie position for Two Stroke Baby just for the gambling gremlin in us.
Top 3 + Roughie ($21.50 pool)
1. Verona Rupes (No.1) — $4.40 / $1.80 🏆 WINNER
Bet $8.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$27.20
Prob 25.7% | Place: 48.2% | Value: 1.45x
Why The gear change and the way it's been built up makes it a legit threat, and 1900m gives it time to find rhythm.
2. Divine Fire (No.10) — $3.80 / $1.70 🏆 2ND
Bet $9.50 Place — ✓ Won, net +$6.65
Prob 18.2% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 0.88x
Why On pace profile, and if the tempo holds moderate, it can lift late and snatch a spot in the first three.
3. Eau De Cologne (No.3) — $5.00 / $2.00 🏆 7TH
Bet $4.00 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$4.00
Prob 16.9% | Place: 46.5% | Value: 1.08x
Why Fine form on the surface switches, and it looks like it can keep travelling without the backmarkers getting too brave.
Roughie: Two Stroke Baby (No.9) — $12.00 / $3.60 🏆 13TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 21.7% | Value: 1.05x
Why It can run on, but at this trip it needs a clean run and the top three look like they have better control of the race shape.
Race type: BM56, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, but the field can string out. This is where midfield runners can turn into placegetters if the tempo stays fair.
Punty read:
Mr Markle (No.2) is the pick because it's been hitting the line and it's got the market backing to match. This type of BM grade over 1200m often rewards those who can sit close enough to pounce, not those who try to run a marathon at sprint speed.
Packers Journey (No.10) is the best place alternative. It's not a lock for win, but it's capable of getting the right run, then holding on. Formidable Force (No.1) is the respect runner, even if it's a touch undervalued, it's got enough form behind it to keep you honest.
King's Taj (No.4) is the roughie place bet type, but this isn't a race where you want to go wide unless the leaders start falling over early.
Top 3 + Roughie ($14.00 pool)
1. Mr Markle (No.2) — $4.40 / $1.75 🏆 3RD
Bet $7.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 27.1% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.54x
Why The win lane looks best here, and the way it tracks into races makes it a serious contender at 1200m.
2. Packers Journey (No.10) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.7% | Place: 48.9% | Value: 0.97x
Why It's there for a place, but the price band says we're not paying overs for the exact same job.
3. Formidable Force (No.1) — $4.70 / $1.85 🏆 9TH
Bet $6.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$6.50
Prob 11.1% | Place: 48.9% | Value: 0.67x
Why Not the best win play, but it's got a place path and a steady tactical profile.
Roughie: King's Taj (No.4) — $9.60 / $3.10 🏆 5TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 40.3% | Value: 0.99x
Why Better value for a place, and if it gets room early, it can surge in the middle stages and hold on.
Race type: BM56, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace, but the field has multiple "can go forward" types. 1400m is where position matters, because the turn-up is bigger.
Punty read:
Callistemon (No.2) is the one I want to lead the chaos with. Blinkers first time is often a "focus up" move, and the market support for it tells you it's not just a casual gear change. This is a horse that can run a more efficient race and stop wasting energy.
Sacred Fort (No.1) is the other anchor. It's been in the placings in the past and it's got the kind of profile that suits 1400m, especially when the pace isn't collapsing. Phoebe Buffay (No.7) is the value place option, and it's the type that can sneak into the top three if Callistemon and Sacred Fort do the first half of the heavy lifting.
Pick A Symphony is the market favourite-ish danger late, but I'm not trying to be the hero at $3 on a BM when the middle-runner types can crowd it out.
Top 3 + Roughie ($22.50 pool)
1. Callistemon (No.2) — $6.00 / $2.25 🏆 5TH
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P) — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 17.4% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.36x
Why Blinkers on plus the right class and map enough to get involved early, it's a place machine with a win chance.
2. Sacred Fort (No.1) — $6.00 / $2.15 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.7% | Place: 69.0% | Value: 1.23x
Why It's strong, but the each-way already covers the sensible outcome so we don't duplicate risk.
3. Phoebe Buffay (No.7) — $5.20 / $1.95 🏆 6TH
Bet $7.50 Place — ✗ Lost, net -$7.50
Prob 13.6% | Place: 62.5% | Value: 0.92x
Why On pace and can keep rolling, it's a smart way to get coverage without needing a miracle win.
Roughie: Pacific Jewel (No.9) — $9.50 / $3.00 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.9% | Place: 55.9% | Value: 1.34x
Why It's got talent, but it needs a clean passage and the ticket prefers the more reliable paths.
Sequence legs are the picks-engine's authoritative choice, rendered from the persisted ticket.
Smart: 1,2,7,3 / 10,1,3,9 / 2,10,1,4 / 1,2,7,9 (256 combos x $0.20 = $50.40) -- 20% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Codename (Race 1, No.2)✓ Won — $1.67
2 - Full Display (Race 3, No.7)✗ — $1.45
3 - Grande Terre (Race 4, No.1)✓ Won — $3.10

Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Mildura on a Good 4 where the speed usually does the heavy lifting, and the fog is just there to give you false confidence before the real action. This card feels like four or five races are pace-setters, then a couple go full chaos mode where wide runners get brave and everyone panics. Usual story, same track, new bruises.
My spine for today is clean as a whistle. Race 2 is a genuine two-horse job, Race 3 has a short-priced leader with just enough upside to back, and Race 4 is the kind of BM sprint where if you miss the map you get punished hard. After that, you can smell the Quaddie lanes already, but the trick is to keep it fun and not go full spreadsheet warrior.
And yeah, the market is doing plenty of talking. When the odds firm up at Mildura, it usually means someone's seen something, or the track is rewarding the exact style they brought. I'm listening, but I'm still picking winners, not vibes.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Mildura, short to middle race distances (1000m-1900m)
Rail: True Entire Circuit
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play Front-running and on-pace snags)
Weather: Morning fog then sunny, 7°C, humidity 100%, wind 7km/h ESE (watch for early fog, then a crisp sun-up surface)
Early lane guess: Quaddie value tends to land with the on-pace types early and the improvers late, so keep your tickets split between leaders and smart stalkers.
Jockeys to follow:
J R Welsh: Gets his horses handy, and when the market backs, he usually makes it count.
Brad Rawiller: Often gets the trip right, and he's not afraid to go early when the map says so.
Will Gordon: Solid work around the sharp tracks, especially when a horse is mentally ready.
Stables to respect:
Heath Chalmers (2 runners): Shows up with on-pacers in these BM grades, and they go straight when conditions suit.
P A Preusker (2 runners): Their debut and gear-change runners can surprise, pay attention when the blinkers switch on.
Patrick Payne (3 runners): Lives in the "kept coming" space, and his horses often pick up where others stop.
Punty's take:
This track profile screams speed, because it's a Good 4 and the rail is True Entire Circuit, so you get your fair share of clean trips for those who land on the bridle. In the sprints, I'm watching who can hold a position without getting shuffled, because once these horses are pinned wide or checked, the finish doesn't forgive.
Race 2 is a classic maiden plate where two talented types should set the script. Race 3 is the same sort of story, but with enough pace pressure to make the winner's job feel a bit less boring than the odds suggest. Then Race 4 is your BM sprint where on-pacers can run the race for you, and the market is absolutely waving its hands around, telling you who it expects to be involved.
What it means for you:
Be aggressive early in the card, but do it smart. Your best damage in a meeting like this is usually taken by backing the map first, then covering the "gets stuck without luck" group in the place lane. Don't overbuild exotics unless the value is staring you in the face.
For Quaddie, I'm happy to go wide in the first leg because those BM sprints are messy, but after that I'm tightening the net and letting the pace do the work. Keep your stake sane, chase the winners in your spine, and let the Quaddie be a bonus, not a lifestyle choice.
