Punty's Early Mail

Operator note: the feed had no pre-calculated Big 3 multi, no pre-built sequence tickets, and no locked selections for Races 4, 7, 8 and 9 (no prices for R4, and the R7 to R9 lines are NO_EDGE). I've printed only what the data supports, so the Big 3 and sequence sections are left out and those races show no card. Please regenerate once the locked data is in.

Rightio Ticket Munchers, nine races, a Good 4 track with the rail out 7m and showers on the radar from the first bell. Nobody's handing you a free lunch today, but there's enough shape in this card to make a sharp punter smile. Grab a coffee, read the maps, and let's get into it.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Pukekohe Park, 1200m to 2200m card
Rail: Out 7m
Official going: Good 4
Weather: Showers. Rain risk sits at 66%+ through the afternoon.
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: R1 slow, R4 and R5 moderate, R9 moderate. R2, R3, R6 and R7 genuine. R8 hot with three genuine leaders in Oberon, Stay Frosty and Final Applause.
Jockeys to follow:
Masahiro Hashizume: nine rides today, including Tzarina's Crown (R2) and Final Applause (R8), who leads the hot pace in the 1200m benchmark.
Tom Wigram: nine rides, including Boomstruck (R6) and Malikia (R5), so he's in the thick of the action all afternoon.
Michael Mc Nab: seven rides, including Unswayed (R1) and Fly Zenno (R3), the two horses I'm most interested in on the first half of the card.
Stables to respect:
L O'sullivan & A Scott (10 runners): The Darzi (R1), Tzarina's Crown (R2) and Crackercol (R9) make them the biggest team on the card and a stable to watch.
S B Marsh (9 runners): Oberon (R8), Fatal Affair and Malikia (R5), and Bourbon Time (R6) give them plenty of ammo across the middle of the day.
Conor & Sarah Fahy (6 runners): Unswayed (R1) and Fly Zenno (R3) are their two standouts, and both are in my top picks.

Punty's take: Pukekohe is a card of two halves. The first race is a slow-pace maiden over 2200m, which means the field will be bunched up and the finish will be a scramble. The middle of the day has genuine speed in R2, R3 and R6, so the leaders should go hard and the closers get a crack. R8 is the chaos race, three leaders with the hot pace tag and a field full of runners who need the pace to fall apart to win. That one's the business for anyone who loves a mess.

The banker-ish races are the two genuine-pace maidens in R2 and R3, where the front-runners are clear and the market has the favourites in the right order. The open races are R4, R5 and R9, which are wide enough that a $12 or $15 runner can run into the money. R5 has the most spread, with no runner above 15% on my numbers, so that's where you'll find your value if you want to find it.

What it means for you: Be aggressive in R2 and R3, where the speed is clear and the top picks have the racing reasons to back up the market. Protect your bankroll in R1 and R5, where the picks are the bet but the field is wide and the place prices are thin. R8 is the place to hunt a roughie if you're chasing a big dividend, but keep the stake small. The Unswayed win bet in R1 is the only hard play I'm making in the first half of the card, the rest is about being smart with what's left.

Race 1 – Dunstan Horsefeeds Mdn

Race type: Maiden, 2200m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace. Unswayed (MIDFIELD) and The Darzi (BACKMARKER) are the two I'm most interested in, with Dun Talkin' (MIDFIELD) sitting midfield and Topeka (BACKMARKER) at the back. Boom Town (ON-PACE) is the only one who'll look to be near the front early.
Punty read: Unswayed is my bet. Mc Nab rides a horse who has been running at the finish with some bad luck in its last two starts, the 4th at Tauranga 1600m was raced wide and the 6th at Taupo was bumped and hampered. Those are real excuses, and the market hasn't noticed. The Darzi is the danger, a backmarker who has been hampered in three of its last four and is at a solid price. Dun Talkin' has been finishing near the top, and Topeka at the back will make some noise if the speed collapses.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)

1. Unswayed (No.4) — $3.50 / $1.62
Bet $10.00 Win, return $35.00
Prob 17.2% | Place: 41.8% | Value: 0.60x Steady since tip
Why Mc Nab rides a horse with two bad-luck runs in a row, and the place price is still fair. Good value for a horse that's been unlucky.
2. The Darzi (No.7) — $4.60 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.6% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.90 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Dun Talkin' (No.1) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.4% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.68x Steady since tip
Why Solid form at a fair price, and a 2200m trip suits a horse that's been finishing near the top.

Roughie: Topeka (No.12) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.1% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.77x Steady since tip
Why If the speed collapses at the back of a slow-paced 2200m, Topeka can sneak home from the rear. It's a long shot, but it's the path that wins.

Race 2 – Trackside.co.nz Mdn

Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace. Crown Of Perfume (LEADER) will go to the front, with Tzarina's Crown (MIDFIELD) and Wedding Belle (BACKMARKER) sitting off the speed.
Punty read: Tzarina's Crown is the staked pick, and the reason is simple: the stable and jockey combination has been dominant on this card, and the horse ran fast at its last start. The Darzi's stablemate is running in a genuine-pace race, so there's a real chance the leader will tire. Crown Of Perfume is the danger on the lead and has been running places, while Wedding Belle at the back is the one to watch if the pace is ferocious.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Tzarina's Crown (No.6) — $3.30 / $1.52
Bet $13.00 Win, return $42.90
Prob 24.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.80x Steady since tip
Why The jockey and trainer combo is the best on the card, and the horse has been sectionals fastest. Genuine pace suits, and I'm happy to back it at this price.
2. Crown Of Perfume (No.11) — $3.30 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 23.9% | Place: 53.6% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.55 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Wedding Belle (No.4) — $3.90 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why A closer on the back of a genuine pace has the race to run, and the jockey strike rate here is solid.

Roughie: Bellavinsky (No.5) — $9.00 / $2.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.2% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.56x Steady since tip
Why Bellavinsky has been running on at the finish in its last two starts, and a genuine pace could bring it into the mix.

Race 3 – Golf Warehouse Mdn

Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace. Gin 'n' Tonic (LEADER) will go to the front, with Fly Zenno, Alayalay and Fleetwood (all ON-PACE) sitting handy. Hit 'n' Run, Rakonui and Tsunami Sue are all BACKMARKER.
Punty read: Fly Zenno is the staked pick. It's 248 days since its last start, which is a real question mark, but the horse is ON-PACE, Mc Nab rides it, and the place price suggests the market doesn't think it's a sure thing. The danger is Hit 'n' Run, the backmarker who has been running on and has a strong place record on good ground. Rakonui is the one at the back who needs the front to fall apart.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. Fly Zenno (No.5) — $2.30 / $1.30
Bet $13.00 Win, return $29.90
Prob 35.8% | Place: 60.1% | Value: 0.82x Steady since tip
Why Mc Nab rides a horse that sits handy on a genuine-pace track, and its first-up record shows it can do the job after a long spell. The price is short, but the chance is big.
2. Hit 'n' Run (No.7) — $6.00 / $2.25
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.25 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Rakonui (No.6) — $7.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.0% | Place: 35.1% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why Needs the leaders to come back to him, but the race shape will test the front-runners.

Roughie: Tsunami Sue (No.8) — $12.00 / $3.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.60x Steady since tip
Why Held up in its last start, and a genuine pace gives this backmarker the path to sneak through.

Race 4 – Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series Mdn

Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Crimson Sky (BACKMARKER) and Celebrate Now (ON-PACE) are the early names, with Crown Of Perfume and Wedding Belle left out of the pace picture as dual acceptors.
Punty read: No locked selections for this race and no prices posted yet, so I'm not putting a card on it until the market gives me something to work with. Crimson Sky and One Bold Floozie are the two I'll be watching once prices come out. Moderate pace suits the closers, so keep an eye on who gets a clear run.

Top 3 + Roughie: No locked selections for this race in today's data.

Race 5 – Horizon by SkyCity Mdn

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Sir You Can Dance (ON-PACE) and Water Catcher (MIDFIELD) are the two I'll be watching, with Fatal Affair (BACKMARKER) and Rhaena (ON-PACE) on the periphery. Black Hunter, Figurine and Revue are left out of the pace picture as dual acceptors.
Punty read: Sir You Can Dance is my pick. It's 179 days since its last start, which is a real risk, but its first-up record is decent and it's the most consistent horse in the race. Water Catcher is the danger, and it's a horse that finishes with a bang. Fatal Affair from the back will be the one if the leaders go soft.

Top 3 + Roughie ($8.00 pool)

1. Sir You Can Dance (No.1) — $4.50 / $1.90
Bet $8.00 Win, return $36.00
Prob 13.4% | Place: 34.2% | Value: 0.60x Steady since tip
Why On-pace in a moderate pace, a horse that's been finishing near the top and has the jockey and trainer lines working.
2. Water Catcher (No.2) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.40 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Fatal Affair (No.10) — $6.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why Backmarker who's been slowed by interference, so a clear run makes it dangerous.

Roughie: Jaimee Marie (No.5) — $12.00 / $3.80
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.8% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.57x Steady since tip
Why A horse on the speed with a strong jockey and trainer record here, and a 1200m trip suits.

Race 6 – Haunui Farm Mdn

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace. Rozezina (LEADER) goes to the front, with Bourbon Time (ON-PACE) and Countach (ON-PACE) chasing. Boomstruck (MIDFIELD) and Latino (MIDFIELD) sit in the middle, with Figurine, Revue and Belardo Baz left out of the pace picture as dual acceptors.
Punty read: Boomstruck is the bet, but it's an each-way play, not a straight win. The horse has been running on well in its last two starts, and its last-start 3rd at Tauranga 1200m was a fair effort. Bourbon Time is the danger on the speed, and Rozezina in front needs the pace to hold up. Latino at a bigger price is the one to watch for a place.

Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)

1. Boomstruck (No.1) — $5.50 / $2.15
Bet $8.50 Each Way ($4.25W + $4.25P), collects $32.52 if it wins ($23.38 win + $9.14 place), $9.14 if it only places
Prob 15.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why The price is fair for a horse that has been running on, and the each-way cover keeps you in it if it only runs a place.
2. Bourbon Time (No.10) — $4.60 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.4% | Place: 35.8% | Value: 0.66x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Latino (No.5) — $7.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.9% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.69x Steady since tip
Why A midfield horse with a strong record over the trip, and a place is the realistic outcome.

Roughie: Rozezina (No.11) — $9.50 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.6% | Place: 28.6% | Value: 0.91x Steady since tip
Why Leads a genuine pace, so if the others can't catch it up front, Rozezina can steal this one.

Race 7 – YourRide Mdn

Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace. Delete Delete (LEADER) is the only true front-runner, with Parfait Dimanche and Truly Divine (both ON-PACE) sitting handy. Rossella and Billecart are midfield.
Punty read: No locked selections for this race and no prices posted yet. Parfait Dimanche has the best pace position on the card and is the one to watch if the prices come out fair. Rossella is the closer to keep an eye on if the leaders go too hard.

Top 3 + Roughie: No locked selections for this race in today's data.

Race 8 – Speight's (Bm65)

Race type: Benchmark 65, 1200m
Map & tempo: Hot Pace. Oberon (LEADER), Stay Frosty (LEADER) and Final Applause (LEADER) will all be swinging for the front, with Fleeting Star, Opressor and Justice For All on the speed behind them.
Punty read: No locked selections for this race and no prices posted yet. With three leaders in the field, the pace will be ferocious, so the closers have every chance. Oberon has good form at the trip and is the one I'd want if the prices give me a shot.

Top 3 + Roughie: No locked selections for this race in today's data.

Race 9 – SkyCity Christmas Carnival (Bm65)

Race type: Benchmark 65, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace. Crackercol (MIDFIELD) and Ocean Road (MIDFIELD) are the two to watch, with One Bold Gigolo, Passion 'n' Pride and Emmy Dazzler (all ON-PACE) on the speed.
Punty read: No locked selections for this race and no prices posted yet. Moderate pace suits the midfield runners, and Crackercol has the strongest record of the group. Keep an eye on the market once the prices go up.

Top 3 + Roughie: No locked selections for this race in today's data.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Oberon's trip record
Oberon is 1-1-2 from 8 starts over 1200m in the data, and it's LEADER in a hot-pace race. If the pace is as hot as the map says, that leading record matters.
2 - Fleeting Star's good ground record
Fleeting Star is 1-1-1 from 3 starts on Good ground in the data, and it's ON-PACE in the hot-pace 1200m. A nice little ground fit for a horse that has been bumped and hampered.
3 - Mitonic's weight warning
Mitonic is 0 from 3 at 58-69kg in the data. If you're looking for a horse that weights up badly, this is the sort of stat that should keep you out.

FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY

Pukekohe's got a lot of mess in it, and that's the fun. Back the bet, respect the place price, and don't chase the roughie with the rent money. See you at the rail, Sickos.
