Rightio Ticket Munchers, Sapphire Coast is a Soft 5 seven-race card with the speed spread thin and a quaddie in Races 4 to 7 that deserves your attention, so grab a coffee and let's get into it.

MEET SNAPSHOT

Track: Sapphire Coast, 1000m to 1600m card
Rail: True (no rail position in the data, so treat the lane as a guess until the first call)
Official going: Soft 5 (Nil last 24hrs, 5mm last 7 days)
Weather: Fine, gusts 16.7km/h. Rain risk 50%+ at 17:00, 20:00 and 23:00.
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Race 1 is a Slow Pace affair, Races 3, 5 and 6 are Moderate, Race 2 is the only Genuine Pace race on the card, and Race 7 is Moderate with two leaders fighting for the front.
Jockeys to follow:
Pierre Boudvillain: five rides today, including Christmas Star in Race 4 and Will The Thinker in Race 5, and he's the one who gets the most looks across the card.
Ms Coriah Keatings: five rides, with Written Story in Race 5 and De Razilly in Race 6 both near the top of my list.
Ms Amy McLucas: four rides, with Peruno in Race 2 and London Star in Race 4 the ones I'd watch for the jockey angle.
Stables to respect:
Ms T Bateup (8 runners): the biggest operation on the card, with Aegipan and London Star among the eight, so they're a stable you can't ignore.
B Joseph & P & M Jones (4 runners): Christmas Star in Race 4 is the headline runner and the one I'd be most keen to see get the job done.
Mitchell Beer & George Carpenter (3 runners): Cumulate in Race 3 is the one I'd be backing from this yard.

Punty's take: Race 1 is the one where the speed sits right up front on paper, with Camden Cove the likeliest to get to the front if nobody else wants it. Race 2 is the only genuine-pace race on the card, and Delago Serg is the only horse who maps to lead there, so the jockey and the draw are doing a lot of work. Races 3, 5 and 6 are the moderate-pace ones where the handy horses have the edge, and the races I'd call banker-ish are Race 4 and Race 5. Race 7 is the chaos race of the lot, with two leaders in Mctominay and Faerywood and a bunch of runners cooked on the speed, so that's where the outsiders get their chance.

What it means for you: Be aggressive in Race 1 and Race 4 where the favourites hold the most weight, but don't get carried away because the Soft 5 is going to test the horses that have never won on soft. Protect yourself in Race 2 and Race 7 where the pace is contested and the wide draws cost ground. The value sits in the Each Way on Cumulate in Race 3 and in the win bet on Written Story in Race 5, with the quaddie sitting as the entertainment side. Keep the stake sizes honest and let the banker legs do the heavy lifting.

PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI

These are the three bets the day leans on.

1 - Camden Cove (Race 1, No.1) — $2.15
Why The best-credentialed horse in a thin maiden, and the market agrees with me, so I'm happy to lean on it straight out.
2 - De Razilly (Race 6, No.2) — $2.65
Why Sits handy from barrier 9 in a Moderate Pace race and the shape helps, with a second-up record that says it's ready to go close.
3 - Christmas Star (Race 4, No.6) — $2.70
Why Barrier 1 on the speed in a race that suits the handy runners, and a 2kg drop from last start is a real bonus.
Multi (all three to win): $10 × 15.38 = $153.80

Race 1 – Bermagui Cellars Mdn Plate

Race type: MAIDEN, 1000m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on the card's first call, with nobody mapping to lead outright. Camden Cove from barrier 4 and Roselily from barrier 3 are the likeliest to take the front, and the sprint shape hurts the handy runners more than anything. Dartanu and Cat's Eye are the ones I'd be watching from off the speed, but they need the early pace to fall in their favour.
Punty read: Camden Cove is the bet, and it's a bet that ignores the shape because the rest of the field looks second-rate for a maiden. He's the one likely to get the early lead, the market has him at $2.15, and blinkers coming off first time with a nose roll on is a change I'd want to see. Dartanu is the danger if the speed collapses, and Roselily from barrier 3 is the one I'd want to see get the trail. Cat's Eye is a horse to watch because the market has it at $5.00 with plenty of room in the price.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Camden Cove (No.1) — $2.15 / $1.37
Bet $15.00 Win, return $32.25
Prob 44.8% | Place: 62.1% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why Blinkers off first time and a nose roll on, sitting handy from barrier 4, and he's been running on at the finish across his last three starts. The shape is against him on paper, but he's the most consistent horse here and the one I trust most in a bare maiden.
2. Dartanu (No.3) — $3.70 / $1.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.7% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.65x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Cat's Eye (No.5) — $5.00 / $2.35
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.3% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why Came from a second at Canberra last start, and the trainer has a decent strike at this track, so the form is the best of the rest.

Roughie: Roselily (No.6) — $10.00 / $3.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.1% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.71x Steady since tip
Why Sits handy from barrier 3 and has a third-up 1:0-0-0 record on the books, so if the leaders go too hard early she can run into the picture.

Race 2 – Bermagui Country Club Country Boosted (Bm58)

Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace on paper with Delago Serg the only leader and uncontested from barrier 5. I Doubt It from barrier 7 is the only one who can really press him, but both have to work across from the wide draws. Dundeel Flyer from barrier 6 needs cover, so the shape helps the front-runner and hurts the handy runners.
Punty read: Delago Serg is the bet because he gets an uncontested lead on a genuine-pace card and the market has moved him from $5.00 to $3.70, which is serious money. He has no soft win on record from five starts, so there's a question mark I can't ignore. Dundeel Flyer and I Doubt It are the ones who have to work across from the wide draws, and Peruno at barrier 1 is the one I'd want to see get a trip if the early speed goes too hard.

Top 3 + Roughie ($12.00 pool)

1. Delago Serg (No.4) — $3.70 / $1.75
Bet $12.00 Win, return $44.40
Prob 27.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.00x Steady since tip
Why The only leader on a genuine-pace card, and the market has backed him in firmly. He's been running well at 1600m and the jockey and trainer combination is a live one.
2. Dundeel Flyer (No.5) — $2.45 / $1.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.62x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. I Doubt It (No.6) — $4.40 / $2.05
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.8% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why Firming from $5.00 to $4.40 and a track record of 1:0-0-0 suggests the market likes him, but he has to work from barrier 7 to get close to the lead.

Roughie: Peruno (No.3) — $5.50 / $2.40
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 31.9% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 1 saves him the trip and he's a soft specialist with three wins from 25 starts on the surface, so if the front-runners fade he can grind home.

Race 3 – Bega District News Mdn Hcp

Race type: MAIDEN, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Cumulate from barrier 5 the one who gets the shape advantage. Setta Icon from barrier 2 and Farsain from barrier 1 are the ones likely to press up front, and North Star Miss from barrier 8 is the back-half runner who needs cover. The shape suits the handy runners, which makes Cumulate the one to follow.
Punty read: Cumulate is the bet because the shape is in his favour, he has a sit behind a moderate pace, and the each-way structure on a $3.00 price gives us the place insurance. Yes He Reigns at $2.75 is the danger from the back, and Hikari Rising from barrier 7 is one to watch for the bubble cheeker going on first time. Setta Icon is the roughie who might get a clean run if the front-runners go too hard.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Cumulate (No.4) — $3.10 / $1.30
Bet $15.00 Each Way ($7.50W + $7.50P), collects $33.00 if it wins ($23.25 win + $9.75 place), $9.75 if it only places
Prob 31.5% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.98x Steady since tip
Why Nose roll off first time and sits handy from barrier 5 in a race that suits the handy runners. Fourth on the last start over 800m with a third-up record on the books, so the place is the safest route.
2. Yes He Reigns (No.1) — $2.80 / $1.22
Bet Tracked
Prob 24.9% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Hikari Rising (No.2) — $5.00 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.72x Steady since tip
Why A first-up win at Hawkesbury 800m last start, and the bubble cheeker going on first time is a gear change worth noting.

Roughie: Setta Icon (No.3) — $11.00 / $2.50
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 2 and sits on the speed, with a soft record of 0 wins from 8 starts but two seconds. If the moderate pace stays moderate and the front-runners tire, he can be right there at the finish.

Race 4 – Forbes Stynes Property Group Bermagui Cup (Bm82)

Race type: BENCHMARK 82, 1000m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Aegipan from barrier 2, Christmas Star from barrier 1 and London Star from barrier 3 all likely to fight for the front. Christmas Star is the one who gets the most out of the shape, and the back-half runners Los Padres and Starlight Girl from barrier 7 and 8 need cover to get involved.
Punty read: Christmas Star is the bet because he's got barrier 1, sits handy in a moderate pace race, and the shape helps him. He's dropped 2kg from last start, which tells me the handicapper is going easy on him. Aegipan at $3.30 is the danger after the market backed him in, and Los Padres from barrier 7 is one to watch if the front-runners go too hard.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Christmas Star (No.6) — $2.80 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $42.00
Prob 32.8% | Place: 51.9% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why Barrier 1 and the shape is in his favour, and he's been a winner on the track with a soft record of 1 win from 9 but 3 seconds. A 2kg drop from last start is a big plus for a horse in this grade.
2. Aegipan (No.5) — $3.30 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.4% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.74x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Los Padres (No.2) — $4.80 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.79x Steady since tip
Why Came from a wide draw in his last start and was held up, so a clean run from barrier 7 would change the picture.

Roughie: London Star (No.7) — $11.00 / $3.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.1% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.67x Steady since tip
Why A first-up horse with a 150-day spell behind him and a sit on the speed from barrier 3, so if the front-runners fight each other he can creep into the finish.

Race 5 – Bega Landscape Supplies Hcp (C1)

Race type: CLASS 1, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with a crowded front line of Will The Thinker from barrier 2, Written Story from barrier 3, Sesto from barrier 4 and Vanrosa from barrier 5, so the speed is contested. Brundee Tom from barrier 8 has to work to cross, and Liamena Avenue from barrier 6 gets the best of the shape advantage.
Punty read: Written Story is the bet because he has the best combination of barrier and shape on a crowded speed line, and the shape helps him. He's had a bit of bad luck at the finish but the sectionals say he can run fast late. Will The Thinker is the danger from barrier 2 and the market at $2.55 is respecting him, while Liamena Avenue at $12.00 is the one who gets the shape advantage if the front-runners clash.

Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)

1. Written Story (No.3) — $2.80 / $1.25
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), collects $21.26 if it wins ($14.70 win + $6.56 place), $6.56 if it only places
Prob 30.2% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.85x Steady since tip
Why Sits handy from barrier 3 in a race that suits the handy runners, and the sectionals show fastest closing and time. He's yet to win on soft from three starts, but the each-way gives us a route to a return.
2. Will The Thinker (No.1) — $2.60 / $1.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 29.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Brundee Tom (No.2) — $6.50 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 38.9% | Value: 0.96x Steady since tip
Why Wide from barrier 8, so he has to work to cross, but he's been running on at the finish and the market has him firming from $7.00.

Roughie: Vanrosa (No.5) — $12.00 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.7% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.68x Steady since tip
Why A soft record of 0 wins from 3 starts, but he's a sit on the speed from barrier 5 and the market has him backed in from $15.00 to $12.00, which tells me someone has an opinion.

Race 6 – Bega Cup Carnival January 30 & 31 Country Boosted Mdn Hcp

Race type: MAIDEN, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with no clear leader, and the likeliest to find the front are Clyde Mountain from barrier 8, De Razilly from barrier 9, Monnie from barrier 7 and Mr Biggles Worth from barrier 6. The wide draws are the story here, because Clyde Mountain and De Razilly both have to work across and Hit The Nos from barrier 10 needs cover.
Punty read: De Razilly is the bet because he sits handy, the shape helps him, and he's a second-up horse with a runner-up effort at Bathurst last start. He's the favourite at $2.65 and the market has him right, but the wide draw is the question I'd want to see answered. Edika from barrier 1 is the one who gets a clean run if the front pair goes too hard, and Spy Trader is the one who needs the tongue tie to do its job.

Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)

1. De Razilly (No.2) — $2.70 / $1.25
Bet $13.00 Win, return $35.10
Prob 33.9% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why Sits handy from barrier 9 and the shape helps him in a moderate pace race. He was second at Bathurst last start, and a soft record of 0 wins from 4 starts with 2 seconds says he's knocking on the door.
2. Edika (No.5) — $4.20 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.70x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Spy Trader (No.4) — $4.20 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.65x Steady since tip
Why Tongue tie goes on first time and he's a backmarker from barrier 4, so the gear change is the thing that might bring him into the finish.

Roughie: Clyde Mountain (No.1) — $9.50 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.0% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.76x Steady since tip
Why Sits handy from barrier 8 and was held up by interference last start, so if the front pair kills each other he can run into the finish from the outside.

Race 7 – Bermagui Motor Works (Bm58)

Race type: BENCHMARK 58, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Mctominay from barrier 8 and Faerywood from barrier 3 both wanting the front, so the speed is contested. Ciao Bella Mia from barrier 9 has to work to cross, and the shape is against her, so she needs to find a way round the leaders. Showtime Maggie from barrier 11 is the backmarker who needs the front pair to fight for too long, and Miss Scoop from barrier 1 gets the inside.
Punty read: Ciao Bella Mia is the bet because she's the strongest form horse in the race even with the shape against her. She's a soft winner, has three wins from 13 on soft, and her last two starts were third placings at 1400m. The market is at $4.60 and she's the one I'd be on. Showtime Maggie at $5.50 is the danger from the back, and Casino Shaw sits handy with the shape working for him.

Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)

1. Ciao Bella Mia (No.2) — $4.60 / $1.82
Bet $15.00 Win, return $69.00
Prob 24.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.10x Steady since tip
Why Her shape is against her from barrier 9 but she's a soft winner with three wins from 13 starts on the surface. Two third-placed runs at Nowra and Goulburn in her last starts tell me the form is there, and she'll be well ridden by Poppie Gorton on a 3kg claim.
2. Showtime Maggie (No.7) — $5.50 / $2.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.4% | Place: 34.8% | Value: 0.68x Steady since tip
Why A real chance — but at $2.10 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Casino Shaw (No.5) — $8.00 / $2.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.5% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.92x Steady since tip
Why Sits handy from barrier 4 in a race that suits the handy runners, and he's been running on at the finish over middle trips.

Roughie: Liamena Avenue (No.10) — $9.50 / $2.85
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.0% | Place: 38.0% | Value: 1.14x Steady since tip
Why Sits handy from barrier 2 and has a soft record of 0 wins from 6 starts, so he's a horse who needs the speed to collapse. No rider is booked on his Race 5 entry, so keep an eye on the jockey change before the jump.

SEQUENCE LANES

QUADDIE (R4–R7)

Smart: 6,4,5 / 1,3 / 2,4 / 2,10,7,5 (48 combos x $0.4167 = $20.00) -- 41.7% flexi
Punty's take: Race 4 and Race 5 are the tight legs with the two strongest runners in each, Race 6 has three horses in it, and Race 7 is the wide-open leg with five runners. The risk is high because the Race 7 leg is a chaos race, but the flexi keeps the ticket alive if the banker legs hold. It's a cheap ticket with a decent shot, and the Race 7 leg is where the payout lives.

NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK

1 - Camden Cove's gear change
Blinkers come off first time for Camden Cove and a nose roll goes on, so the horse is being set up differently for his first run here.
2 - Delago Serg's soft record
Delago Serg has a soft record of 0 wins from 5 starts with a second and two thirds, so the lead on a soft track is a question I can't answer with a win.
3 - Did Dubai Me Euros, the write-your-own-ticket horse
Lugging bit on first time and a tongue control bit coming off, priced at $126.00, so if you want a long-shot ticket in Race 6 this is the one that makes the bookies sweat.

FINAL WORD FROM THE CHAOS KITCHEN

Soft 5 tracks have a way of humbling the fancy horses and rewarding the ones who grind it out, so keep your stakes honest and let the banker legs earn their keep. I'll see you at the rail, and don't forget to bring your sense of humour when the front-runners fall in a heap.
