Punty's Early Mail
For all of Punty's tips for Taupo, head to https://punty.ai/tips/taupo-2026-11-05
Rightio Degenerates, Taupo is sitting on a Soft 6 with a six-race card running from 1200m to 2000m, and the speed map is all over the shop. Three races are slow, one is genuine, one is hot and one is moderate, so you've got banker-shaped races sitting next to a proper speed fight. Grab a coffee, read the map, and don't get married to any one price before the jump.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Taupo, 1200m to 2000m card
Rail: True (no rail position given in the data)
Official going: Soft 6
Weather: Cloudy
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Slow in Races 1, 4 and 6, Genuine in Race 2, Hot in Race 3 where three runners want the front, Moderate in Race 5 with two on the lead.
Jockeys to follow:
Joe Doyle: six rides today, including Domain Ace in Race 1, our top pick and the day's cleanest-looking bet.
Samantha Collett: five rides, with Lofty Wind in Race 3 and Red Wings in Race 5 among them. She's the one to watch for a bit of value in the outside rides.
Michael Mc Nab: four rides, including I'm Quinn in Race 4, our Race 4 pick, and Fiesta in Race 3 where he's on a lead-or-bust horse.
Stables to respect:
L O'sullivan & A Scott (8 runners): the big number on the card, with Mega Roc in Races 2 and 3 and Judy's Smarties in Races 5 and 6 on the staked list. Eight starters means they'll have a say in the outcome.
S B Marsh (6 runners): Tip Top in Race 6 is our each-way horse, and the rest of their team has to be watched across the card.
G A & D G Rogerson & Clint Isdale (5 runners): Domain Ace in Race 1 is the flag bearer here, and the stable has a bit of depth to back him up.
Punty's take: The speed is the story today. Race 1 has no genuine leader on the map, so whoever gets to the front first will do it without a fight, and that's the sort of race that rewards a horse sitting in the pack. Race 3 is the Thunderdome: Stanza, Mega Roc and Fiesta are all mapped to lead, and three of them going at it means somebody's cooked by the 800. Mega Roc is the one with the stake on him, settling on the lead from barrier 6, and if the other two burn each other out, Fiesta from barrier 2 is the slow-motion fella who might slip home on the front. Race 4 is the slow one, and I'm Quinn sitting back from barrier 6 is my bet there. Race 5 is the only race with a real moderate tempo and two leaders, which means the sit-behind horses get the best of it. Race 2 is genuine with Finozino the only leader, so the pressure comes from Lovegrove and Noverre Belle.
What it means for you: Be aggressive on Domain Ace in Race 1, because the slow pace and the draw aren't against him and he's the flattest bet on the card. Keep your stakes tight in Race 3 because the speed duel makes that race a bit of a coin toss. Race 6 is where the each-way lives: Tip Top is rated shorter by my numbers than the market has him, so the each-way on him is the value play of the day. Lofty Wind in Race 2 is the other each-way, and he carries a 4kg rise from his last start so you want to be sure of the weight before you jump in. Keep the rest of your money in your pocket, because the no-bet horses are there as a sidebar and not a plan.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
The pre-calculated Big 3 multi wasn't in today's data, so there's no Big 3 section this mail. Race-by-race picks are below.
Race 1 – Race Images Hcp (60)
Race type: Restricted 60, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace on paper, and nobody maps to lead, so La Cadiere from barrier 2 is the likeliest to find the front without a fight. Domain Ace from barrier 5 sits midfield and is one of the back-half runners who needs cover, so he wants a trip through the pack rather than a sprint. Mista Stitch from barrier 6 is the other one who needs the race to come to him.
Punty read: Domain Ace is the bet and the reason is simple: he's the top of the market, the top of my numbers, and his draw and map suit the slow-pace shape. He's the one to ride on, with 2 wins from 29 and 2 seconds and 4 thirds across the career. Sweet Disposition and Mista Stitch are the dangers, and Syracuse is the roughie to watch if the race sets up for a late run.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Domain Ace (No.1) — $4.80 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $72.00
Prob 35.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.69x
Why Joe Doyle has ridden 9.5% winners at Taupo with 267 from 2823 for the track, and the combo with Doyle and the stable is 2 from 9. He's 2kg up from last start, which he has carried before, and his best form is at lighter weights. The soft ground record is 1 win from 17 starts, so he's not a soft specialist, but he's the best all-round horse here.
2. Sweet Disposition (No.5) — $4.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.83x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Mista Stitch (No.2) — $23.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.2% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 3.50x
Why Track 4:1-1-0 and distance 11:1-0-0 give him something to hang on. Last start 10th at Te Aroha 1150m after a slow start, so he needs a clean beginning and a bit of luck.
Roughie: Syracuse (No.3) — $7.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.10x
Why His path is a late run through a pack in a race where nobody wants the front. He's got sectional time rank 2 and a 1 from 3 record at the trip, and last start was 10th at Pukekohe Park 1400m where he was bumped and hampered, so a clean run is the key.
Race 2 – Belle Family Entain / NZB Insurance Pearl Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, and Finozino from barrier 12 is the only leader on the map, so he has to work across the field to get the front. Lovegrove from barrier 4 and Noverre Belle from barrier 2 are the ones who will press him. Lady Margaery from barrier 8 and Absolutelyfabulous from barrier 11 are the back-half runners who need cover, and Lofty Wind sits handy on the speed.
Punty read: Lofty Wind is the staked horse and he's the one I want on the each-way. He's ON-PACE and sits handy in a genuine pace, and his last start was 4th at Taupo 1100m, 2.2L beaten. His rider is booked in Race 3, so check the jockey line before you get on. Mega Roc and Absolutelyfabulous are the dangers, and Noverre Belle is the roughie to watch if Finozino gets run down.
Top 3 + Roughie ($14.50 pool)
1. Lofty Wind (No.8) — $18.00 / place tote
Bet $14.50 Each Way ($7.25W + $7.25P), collects $130.50 plus the tote place dividend if it wins, the tote place dividend if it only places
Prob 20.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 3.71x
Why Career 3 starts with no placings yet, but he's sitting on a 4th at Taupo 1100m last start and the sectional time rank of 3 shows he's in the mix. He's 4kg up from last start, which is the main worry, but he's best at similar weights, so the weight is manageable if his rider holds the ride.
2. Mega Roc (No.7) — $8.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.68x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Absolutelyfabulous (No.1) — $10.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.95x
Why Career 0-3-2 with a 2nd at Taupo 1200m last start, beaten 0.1L. Wiremu Pinn has 11.6% winners at the track, and the combo is 16% from 50 rides. He's a danger if the race sets up for a closer.
Roughie: Noverre Belle (No.5) — $10.75 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.2% | Place: 28.0% | Value: 0.88x
Why His path is simple: he sits just off the pace from barrier 2, and if Finozino from barrier 12 has to fight across the field, Noverre Belle gets the front or the sit behind it. He's 2kg up from last start, and his one start on the board was a 2nd at Matamata 1200m.
Race 3 – Remembering David Trewavas (Life Member And Taupo Mayor) Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Hot Pace, and it's a three-way lead fight. Stanza from barrier 7, Mega Roc from barrier 6 and Fiesta from barrier 2 all map to lead, so the front is contested. Mega Roc settles on the lead from barrier 6 and needs to get his position without burning himself out. Lofty Wind from barrier 5 is ON-PACE and sits handy, so he's the one in the pack who can use the speed duel.
Punty read: Mega Roc is the staked pick and the reason is the record: 1 start, 3rd, and sectional time fastest, with the best market-to-chance gap on the card. He's the one to back on the win, with the jockey Masahiro Hashizume running hot, and his distance and track record are solid. Stanza and Fiesta are the speed dangers, and Nanesse is the one who could sneak in from the midfield.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Mega Roc (No.4) — $9.00 / place tote
Bet $15.00 Win, return $135.00
Prob 35.2% | Place: 67.0% | Value: 3.17x
Why Last start 3rd at Taupo 1100m, the only run on the sheet, and he's the most likely to get the lead from barrier 6 in a race with three on the speed. Masahiro Hashizume has 11.0% winners lately and he's the one to ride with.
2. Nanesse (No.5) — $5.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.3% | Place: 53.5% | Value: 1.17x
Why A real chance — but at that price the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Lofty Wind (No.7) — $18.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.7% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 3.19x
Why Last start 4th at Taupo 1100m and sectional time rank 2. Samantha Collett has 9.1% winners at Taupo with 928 from 10154, and the stable has a 10.5% strike rate.
Roughie: Fiesta (No.6) — $16.95 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 3.3% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.56x
Why She's a leader from barrier 2 in a three-way fight, so if Stanza and Mega Roc burn each other out, she can slip through on the front. Last start 5th at Te Aroha 1150m, and first-up record is 2 starts with no wins yet.
Race 4 – Marsh Racing Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 2000m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, and nobody maps to lead, so Rocky Balboa from barrier 5 and Pearling Crown from barrier 11 are the likeliest to find the front. Pearling Crown is drawn wide and has to work across to get there. I'm Quinn from barrier 6 settles back, while Kinross, Awaken and Four Leaf Clover are the back-half runners who need cover.
Punty read: I'm Quinn is the staked pick and the reason is the record and the match with the race shape: 10 starts for 1 win and 3 placings, soft form 7:0-1-1, and a jockey in Michael Mc Nab with 15.7% winners at Taupo. Last start 9th at Taupo 1400m, 8.3L beaten, and he's 2kg up from last start but best at lighter weights. Pearling Crown and Rocky Balboa are the dangers, and Kinross is the roughie if the race is slow enough for the back markers to run down the leaders.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. I'm Quinn (No.2) — $3.80 / place tote
Bet $13.00 Win, return $49.40
Prob 30.2% | Place: 54.4% | Value: 1.15x
Why Sectional time rank 2, sits back from barrier 6 in a slow pace, and his soft ground record has the placings to back it up.
2. Pearling Crown (No.11) — $4.52 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.6% | Place: 60.7% | Value: 0.98x
Why A real chance — but at that price the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Rocky Balboa (No.1) — $8.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.49x
Why Career 26 starts for 0-4-5, last start 4th at Te Aroha 2200m, and his soft record is 13 starts for 4 seconds and a 3rd.
Roughie: Kinross (No.4) — $16.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 25.0% | Value: 1.10x
Why Midfield from barrier 10 and needs cover, and his last start was 6th at Taupo 1800m after being held up. If the slow pace collapses at the top, a late run from the bunch is his only way in.
Race 5 – Two Mile Bay Sailing Club Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace, and Italian Connection from barrier 9 and Finozino from barrier 3 are the two who map to lead, so the front is contested. Judy's Smarties from barrier 1 settles handy and is the one who can sit close to that speed. Red Wings from barrier 10 is the back-half runner who needs cover.
Punty read: Judy's Smarties is the staked pick and the reason is her position in a moderate race with two leaders and an inside draw. She's 2 starts for 1 third, soft form 2:0-0-1, and her jockey Masahiro Hashizume is running hot. Facilitate and Italian Connection are the dangers, and Finozino is the roughie if the two leaders fight from wide draws.
Top 3 + Roughie ($18.00 pool)
1. Judy's Smarties (No.7) — $3.11 / place tote
Bet $13.00 Win, return $40.43
Prob 32.9% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.02x
Why Last start 8th at Matamata 1200m, 4.3L beaten, and her previous run was a 3rd at Ellerslie 1200m. Laurie O'sullivan's stable has 13.4% winners at the track, and Hashizume is hot with 11.0% in the last 100 rides.
2. Facilitate (No.1) — $9.00 / place tote
Bet $5.00 Place, pays the tote place dividend
Prob 22.8% | Place: 62.3% | Value: 2.05x
Why Soft 4:0-0-3 and sectional time fastest. Last start 7th at Te Rapa 1500m, 8.4L beaten, and he's a sit-handy horse who can get on the speed.
3. Italian Connection (No.5) — $9.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.84x
Why Leader from barrier 9, so he has to work across the field. Last start 6th at Te Rapa 1300m, 2.9L beaten, and his distance record is 1 start without a placing.
Roughie: Finozino (No.10) — $9.01 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.84x
Why He's the leader from barrier 3, inside the contested lead. If Italian Connection goes wide and hard, Finozino gets the front from the inside and can make the race his own.
Race 6 – DPA Chartered Accountants Taupo Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, and nobody maps to lead or sit handy, so the race will be a crawl unless somebody decides to go. Tip Top from barrier 6 settles back, and the question is whether he can find a sprint from the back of a slow-run race. Judy's Smarties is in this field too but is also running in Race 5, so her ride is one to check.
Punty read: Tip Top is the staked each-way and the reason is simple: the market has him longer than my numbers, with 27.1% win and 56.2% place chances on my read. His last start was 6th at Hastings 1400m after a slow start, and he's been held up or bumped in several recent runs on the sheet. Star Ninety Six is the market favourite at $3.45, and I'm not chasing him at that price. Spirit Of Ardsley is the roughie if the bunch is held up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Tip Top (No.8) — $6.00 / place tote
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P), collects $39.00 plus the tote place dividend if it wins, the tote place dividend if it only places
Prob 27.1% | Place: 54.2% | Value: 1.63x
Why Back 25 days from his last run and has been held up or bumped in recent starts. Matthew Cartwright has ridden him with Taupo's 11.0% strike rate for jockeys, and the stable has 12.2% winners at the track.
2. Star Ninety Six (No.2) — $4.20 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 26.1% | Place: 55.6% | Value: 1.10x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Judy's Smarties (No.3) — $4.80 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 18.4% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.88x
Why Two starts for a 3rd, and her last start in Race 5 is a different race with a jockey booked there.
Roughie: Spirit Of Ardsley (No.4) — $27.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.2% | Place: 22.4% | Value: 1.41x
Why Last start 7th at Taupo 1100m, 4.5L beaten, and his soft record is 3 starts without a win. If Tip Top and Star Ninety Six both get held up in a slow race, he's the one who could steal a place.
SEQUENCE LANES
(Omitted: no staked sequence ticket was provided for this meeting.)
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Lofty Wind's weight jump
He's 4kg up from his last start, and he's best at similar weights, so keep an eye on the weight and the rider change before you jump.
2 - Tip Top's excuses pile up
Four last-start excuses on the sheet: slow start, held up, held up plus bumped, and bumped. A horse who keeps getting bad luck is either due or cursed, and I'm backing due.
3 - Race 3 is the Thunderdome
Three horses mapped to lead in a hot pace is a speed duel with no referee, so the leaders are fighting for their lives and the pack is licking its lips.
FINAL WORD FROM THE RATBAG REPORT
Six races, one soft track, and a whole lot of speed fights. Keep your head, read the map, and remember the bloke who backs every race is the bloke who gets stuffed by the last one.
