Punty's Early Mail
PUNTY EARLY MAIL, Otaki (2026-10-31)
For all of Punty's tips for Otaki, head to https://punty.ai/tips/otaki-2026-10-31
Rightio Ticket Munchers, Otaki is on a Soft 6 and the card runs from 1200m to 2100m across eight races. The rain risk sits at 64%+ through the card, so the track may not stay where it is now. The market has been kind to a few horses and cruel to others, and there are some proper speed questions in the early races. Grab a coffee, read the maps, and keep your wits about you.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Otaki, 1200m to 2100m card
Rail: True
Official going: Soft 6
Weather: Fine
Early lane guess: Unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Races 1, 5 and 7 are Moderate Pace, Races 2 and 8 are Slow Pace, and Races 3, 4 and 6 are Genuine Pace. Races 3, 4 and 6 have a lead that's uncontested on the map, so the front-runners in those races are the ones to watch.
Jockeys to follow:
Bruno Queiroz (7): Seven rides on the card, with Platinum Diamond in Race 5 and Fashion Savvy in Race 8 among them.
Floor Moerman (7): Seven rides, including Belzoni in Race 5 and Steadfast in Race 8, two of the horses I'm putting money on.
Kelly Myers (7): Seven rides, and she's on Stylish in Race 2, the strongest value on the card in my numbers.
Stables to respect:
Ms L Latta (12 runners): The biggest operation on the card, spread across the races, including Platinum Goddess in Race 6 and Part Time Lover's rivals in Race 3.
C W Cole (7 runners): Part Time Lover in Race 3 is the one with money on it, and the stable also has Old Bill Bone and Rareza in Race 5.
Guy Lowry & Leah Zydenbos (6 runners): Stylish in Race 2 and Testwin in Race 6 are the two they've got in the staked spots, and Katsu in Race 1 is their other live runner.
Punty's take: This is a card where the speed sits in the right places for a few races and the rest are a bit of a mess. Race 1 is a Moderate Pace maiden with four horses who could find the front, so the bet there is a horse that can settle handy rather than a pure speed horse. Race 2 is a Slow Pace race where Stylish has the best figures on paper and is the one to be sweet on. Race 3 looks like a genuine speed race with Cocobill on the lead uncontested, which makes Part Time Lover's midfield run the real question. Race 4 is a fast-starting race with Al Passo the only leader, and the back-half runners will need to get wide luck. Race 5 has a spread of forward runners and a big field of twelve, so the places matter more than the win. Race 6 is Testwin's race to lose, with Platinum Goddess the only leader and a few forward runners fighting for the sit. Race 7 is a Moderate Pace classic-ish 2100m with a lot of front-runners, and the card's biggest prize goes to whoever can settle and sprint. Race 8 is a Slow Pace 2100m where Steadfast is the one I want, and the chaos is in the back half of the field.
What it means for you: Get aggressive in Race 2 with the each-way on Stylish, where the map and the market agree. Protect your bankroll in the bigger-field races (Race 5 and Race 7) and treat them as place-and-watch races. Race 8 is where the value is, with Steadfast the one horse I'm happy to stake. Race 3 has one bet on it, so keep your exposure light there. Race 4 and Race 7 have no locked picks from me, so if you're tempted, sit on your hands.
Race 1 – Vets On Riverbank Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1600m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace on paper. Subsonic (barrier 4), Katsu (barrier 14), Tick Tock Tessa (barrier 5) and Acorn (barrier 6) are the likeliest to find the front, and nobody is a lone leader. Katsu from barrier 14 has to work across to get its position, but the staked line says it settles handy from there. Rangitoto (barrier 15) and Stand Up Comedy (barrier 16) need the race to come to them.
Punty read: Katsu each way at $8.50 is the bet. It's a horse that settles handy, has placed in two of its four starts on soft (Soft 4:0-2-1), and last ran 3rd at Woodville 1400m on 2026-10-07. Tick Tock Tessa is the danger if the speed collapses, and Cricket is the one who gets a trail if the race turns into a sprint home. Acorn has drifted from $24.00 to $41.00, so the market has clearly cooled on it.
Top 3 + Roughie ($8.50 pool)
1. Katsu (No.7) — $5.50 / $2.00
Bet $8.50 Each Way ($4.25W + $4.25P), collects $31.88 if it wins ($23.38 win + $8.50 place), $8.50 if it only places
Prob 16.2% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.89x Steady since tip
Why Soft 4:0-2-1 with two seconds and a third, ON-PACE, and the price is short enough to keep it honest. Jockey Lily Sutherland and trainer Guy Lowry & Leah Zydenbos have a combo of 8.3% (5/60) at the track, which is not nothing.
2. Tick Tock Tessa (No.9) — $6.50 / $2.15
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 32.9% | Value: 0.83x Steady since tip
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Cricket (No.11) — $3.70 / $1.62
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.8% | Place: 33.6% | Value: 0.47x Steady since tip
Why Ran 4th at Woodville 1400m on 2026-10-07 after being bumped and hampered, and the trainer's strike rate at the track is 18.8% (28/149). The market is short at $3.50, so he's not my value pick.
Roughie: Subsonic (No.2) — $12.00 / $3.10
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.7% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 1.16x Steady since tip
Why Back from a 226-day spell and first-up is a bit of a gamble, but he's got the early speed to take the lead if nobody else wants it. If the pace is slow, he's the one who grabs it.
Race 2 – Aquashield Roofing 3yo
Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow pace. Mac Attack (barrier 7) and Bellass (barrier 5) are the likeliest to find the front. Mac Attack from barrier 7 has to work across the field. Stylish settles back from barrier 3, so it needs the pace to hold up in the straight, and the race turns on how the front-runners ride it.
Punty read: Stylish each way at $10.50 is the bet. It's the best value on the card in my numbers, with 25.1% to win and 51.5% to place. It's a back-marker that's fastest on sectionals (Sectionals: time fastest), with a 4th at Taupo 1100m on 2026-10-09 as its last start. Magnate and Mac Attack are the ones to beat it on the front end, and Vicar's Choice is the roughie if the leaders blow up.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Stylish (No.8) — $4.80 / $1.66
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P), collects $33.92 if it wins ($25.20 win + $8.72 place), $8.72 if it only places
Prob 25.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.20x
Why Kelly Myers rides, the trainer Guy Lowry & Leah Zydenbos has a combo of 18.3% (11/60) with her at the track, and the sectionals are the fastest in the race. The one knock is that it's a back-marker in a Slow Pace race, so it has to be able to sprint off the back.
2. Magnate (No.2) — $5.00 / $1.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.76x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Mac Attack (No.1) — $4.20 / $1.56
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.62x
Why Ran 4th at Hawera 1200m on 2026-10-03 and is up 3kg from last start. Barrier 7 is a bit of a question with the speed, but he's a horse that can sit and run.
Roughie: Vicar's Choice (No.5) — $14.00 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 26.8% | Value: 1.08x
Why Back from 146 days off and first-up, with a single run at Ellerslie 1200m, but he's a back-marker in a Slow Pace race who can get home if the leaders go too slow for their own good.
Race 3 – Fastinternet.nz (Bm75)
Race type: Benchmark 75, 1200m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Cocobill (barrier 4) the only leader on the map. Zorero (barrier 6), Cremant (barrier 9), Benerro (barrier 1) and Great Escape (barrier 3) are the pressure behind him. Part Time Lover from barrier 2 settles midfield, and the race looks set up for the one that can sit out the speed and run home.
Punty read: Part Time Lover is the bet at $8.00 win. Zorero is the danger, carrying a 37.0% chance in my numbers and sitting on the speed, and Cremant at barrier 9 has to work across. Part Time Lover has 46.1% to place and is a three-time placed winner on soft over 13 starts.
Top 3 + Roughie ($8.00 pool)
1. Part Time Lover (No.5) — $4.80 / $1.69
Bet $8.00 Win, return $38.40
Prob 21.1% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.01x
Why Samantha Collett rides and the trainer C W Cole has a combo of 14.1% (43/306) with her at the track. Up 2kg from last start, but the form is strong on soft, and the midfield run suits a horse that wants to find a lane.
Only one locked pick in this race, so there's no second, third or roughie from me.
Race 4 – Ōtaki Tyre Repairs (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Al Passo (barrier 2) the only leader on the map. Bean A Pleasure (barrier 4), My Alibi (barrier 17), Only The Lonely (barrier 10) and a crowd of others are the pressure behind him. My Alibi and Perfect Pete both have to work wide, so the inside gate is where the early speed will come from.
Punty read: No locked selections in this race, so I'm not putting a horse up. Watch Al Passo and Only The Lonely for the early shape, and remember Go Thea is a dual acceptor who runs in Race 6 so it's not in this picture.
Race 5 – Cavallo Farms & Chris Rutten Bloodstock Hcp
Race type: Open, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Riverplate (barrier 10), Enrico (barrier 8), Uncle Arch (barrier 1) and Cosentino (barrier 2) the likeliest to find the front. Riverplate has to work from barrier 10 to get across. Belzoni from barrier 12 settles midfield, and the race looks like it'll come to the back-half runners only if the speed collapses.
Punty read: Belzoni is the bet at $7.00 win. Floor Moerman rides and the trainer Ms L Latta has the runner, so the horse is a midfield runner in a race where the front is busy. Old Bill Bone is the danger with 12.9% in my numbers and a fastest sectional. Wingman is the other one to respect.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.00 pool)
1. Belzoni (No.13) — $9.00 / $2.48
Bet $7.00 Win, return $63.00
Prob 7.8% | Place: 27.8% | Value: 0.70x
Why Sectionals and form are solid but not spectacular, and the staked line says it settles midfield from barrier 12. I'm not overcooking it, but the price is generous for a horse with a place chance.
Only one locked pick in this race, so there's no second, third or roughie from me.
Race 6 – Harcourts Ōtaki (Bm75)
Race type: Benchmark 75, 1600m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Platinum Goddess (barrier 7) the only leader. He's A Battler (barrier 14), Sea The Dream (barrier 12) and Croix De Guerre (barrier 15) all have to work wide, and Marriage Vows from barrier 13 needs cover. The race shape favours a horse that can sit close and go once the leader tires.
Punty read: Testwin is the bet at $6.50 win. It's a midfield horse from barrier 5 with 46.1% to place, and the Otaki 1400m second last start was a strong run. Ploy and Plain Sailing are the ones to beat it, and Croix De Guerre is the roughie if the wide runners get their trip.
Top 3 + Roughie ($6.50 pool)
1. Testwin (No.2) — $5.00 / $1.70
Bet $6.50 Win, return $32.50
Prob 18.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.92x
Why Jonathan Riddell rides and the trainer Guy Lowry & Leah Zydenbos is in good order. Three wins from eight at 56-58kg and a second last start at Otaki 1400m on 2026-10-17.
2. Ploy (No.7) — $7.00 / $2.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.0% | Place: 28.6% | Value: 0.84x
Why A real chance — but at $2.20 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Plain Sailing (No.8) — $6.50 / $2.12
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.9% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.71x
Why Ran 4th at Trentham 1600m, held up in the run, and has 1 Sectionals fastest. He's on the speed in a race where the speed is thin.
Roughie: Croix De Guerre (No.9) — $11.00 / $2.70
Bet Tracked
Prob 4.9% | Place: 20.6% | Value: 0.53x
Why Won twice in a row on the Awapuni Synthetic track, and he's on the speed in a Genuine Pace race. He has to be wide from barrier 15, but if the leader goes hard, he can run into the money.
Race 7 – Jennian Homes Feilding Cup
Race type: Open, 2100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with Sunset Boulevard (barrier 10), Knights Realm (barrier 14), Mckhan (barrier 8), Exit Left (barrier 17) and Diomedes (barrier 16) the likeliest to find the front. Several of them are wide and have to work across. Wolfgang (barrier 15) and Freddie Time (barrier 13) need cover.
Punty read: No locked selections in this race, so I'm not putting a horse up. Solidify has the top probability in my numbers at 16.3%, and Sunset Boulevard is the one with the strongest form. Watch the early speed and the wide runners.
Race 8 – The Tele Ōtaki (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 2100m
Map & tempo: Slow pace with Grand Prospect (barrier 9) and Leprekhan (barrier 8) the likeliest to find the front. Steadfast settles back from barrier 11, and the wide-drawn back-half runners (Joan's Joker, Dupug, Fashion Savvy, Malibu and Peppery) all need cover or luck. A slow pace over 2100m is a tactical race, and a horse sitting back has to pick its moment.
Punty read: Steadfast is the bet at $4.50 win. It's the strongest form in the race in my numbers, at 21.2% to win and 46.1% to place, and it's a back-marker that's won at Awapuni Synthetic and run 2nd at Hawera 1600m. Djibouti is the one to watch, and Am I Blue is the roughie.
Top 3 + Roughie ($4.50 pool)
1. Steadfast (No.2) — $4.40 / $1.82
Bet $4.50 Win, return $19.80
Prob 21.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.93x
Why Floor Moerman rides and the trainer K T Myers is in form. The one-run-a-week schedule has been good for this horse and he's up only 2kg from last start.
2. Joan's Joker (No.1) — $6.50 / place tote
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.76x
Why A real chance — but at that price the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Djibouti (No.15) — $4.80 / $1.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.6% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.56x
Why Won at Te Aroha 2200m on 2026-10-21 and has been placed in three of its last four runs. A good chance to run into the money.
Roughie: Am I Blue (No.12) — $15.00 / $2.96
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.6% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.84x
Why Ran 5th at Otaki 2100m on 2026-10-17 and has a 1-1-1 style on soft. The wide draw is the main worry, but at $11.50 he's a long-odds option that can run into the places.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Cricket's been unlucky
Cricket ran 4th at Woodville 1400m on 2026-10-07 after being bumped and hampered, and the trainer's strike rate at the track is 18.8%. He's a live one at $3.50, but that's the price I don't want to take.
2 - Stylish's sectionals are the best on the card
Stylish is the only runner in Race 2 with fastest sectionals and a 4th at Taupo 1100m as its last start. The each-way at $10.50 is the bet I'm happiest with.
3 - Weight warnings are everywhere in Race 7
Solidify, Mckhan, Trav, Psyclone and Cheval De Foudre are all flagged for winning at 58kg and above, and Freddie Time is 0/2 at 59kg. A few of those names will be carrying heavier than they like, so it's the sort of race that bites the punters who ignore the weights.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Eight races, a soft track, and a few horses who think they're better than the form says. Stick to the bets I've put down, leave the rest alone, and don't chase a horse that's already run away from you.
