Punty's Early Mail
PUNTY EARLY MAIL, Tauranga (2026-10-31)
For all of Punty's tips for Tauranga, head to https://punty.ai/tips/tauranga-2026-10-31
Rightio Degenerates, Tauranga is sitting on a Soft 5 with fine weather, nine races from 1200m to 2100m, and a 65%+ rain risk flagged for the later half of the card. The soft ground does the sorting today. Half this field has never won on it, so the ones who have are worth a closer look.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Tauranga, 1200m to 2100m card
Rail: True
Official going: Soft 5
Weather: Fine
Early lane guess: unknown pre-race, watch the first two
Tempo profile: Mostly Moderate (R1, R3, R5, R8, R9), Genuine in R4, R6 and R7, Slow in R2. Lots of on-pace types in the 1300m and 1400m races, and a genuine speed fight in the two staying races.
Jockeys to follow:
Masahiro Hashizume: 8 rides on the card, and 9.1% at this track (324/3559) for the book.
Michael Mc Nab: 8 rides, 15.7% at this track (921/5870) and 30% over his last 100, so he is in form.
Jack Taplin: 7 rides, flagged J-HOT at 15.0% over his last 100 rides.
Stables to respect:
S B Marsh (11 runners): 12.2% at this track (1023/8407), the biggest string on the card and always worth a look.
L O'sullivan & A Scott (7 runners): 13.3% at this track (446/3342), with Genki and Sweet But Psycho among the main chances.
R R Manning (6 runners): 9.7% at this track (249/2561), with Malleable, Shuffle The Pack and Khafre in the mix.
Punty's take: This is a card with a clear split. The 1400m and 1300m sprints mostly have the speed sitting handy, and the Moderate pace races are where the on-pace horses should get a soft run. The two staying races, R4 and R6, have a genuine pace on paper with a lone leader in each. Toruk Makto runs the show in R4 and Khan Hunter does the same in R6, so the stalkers sitting right behind them are the ones I want. R2 is the one race where the speed map goes quiet: Clara Bow and Tailoress are the only forward runners and nobody is breathing down their necks. That is a race I'd rather watch than bet on. Intan and Admiral Vos are the two I keep coming back to in R1, because the fields this soft reward horses who already know their way around it. Sweet But Psycho in R5 comes off a second at this trip on the same ground, and that makes him the banker of the day.
What it means for you: Be aggressive in R5 and R8, where the form and the shape both point to the one or two runners who have been running on, and protect in R2, where the pace is slow and the backmarkers have to get lucky. R4 and R6 are chaos-leaning, so spread a little with the stalkers and let the leaders pay for their own sins. The value on the card sits with the horses who have proven soft form but are priced as if they haven't. Stick to the locked bets below and don't chase.
PUNTY'S BIG 3 + MULTI
These are the three bets the day leans on.
There is no Big 3 multi locked for Tauranga today, so there is no spine for this mail. The single bets in the race-by-race section are the ones to follow.
Race 1 – Savaglee Standing At Mapperley Stud 3yo
Race type: Open, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace on paper, but nobody maps to lead outright. Admiral Vos (barrier 6) is the most likely to chase the front, with Sir Richie and Imperial Rose from barriers 1 and 2 ready to fight for it. Intan from barrier 5 gets to sit midfield and cross into the run, while Bramito is caught wide from barrier 7 and needs cover to get into it. That shape suits the horses who can sit handy and go again, which is exactly what Intan does.
Punty read: Intan is my bet here and I'm happy to put the money on her. She won her last start on the same ground at Taupo over 1100m, and she has a placing and a win from her three runs on soft. The middle barrier and the midfield run give her the sit she needs. Admiral Vos is the main danger, a Tauranga 1200m winner last start who can run the race from the front. Rose Aye Reign ran nine lengths-ish back at Ellerslie last start, so she has to bounce back. Bramito is the one to watch at a long price from a wide barrier.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.00 pool)
1. Intan (No.6) — $3.30 / place tote
Bet $11.00 Win, return $36.30
Prob 28.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.95x Steady since tip
Why Won at Taupo 1100m last start, and placed in her soft starts. She sits midfield off a barrier 5 draw, which gets her clear air without being caught wide.
2. Admiral Vos (No.1) — $3.90 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 22.1% | Place: 33.7% | Value: 0.86x Steady since tip
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Rose Aye Reign (No.4) — $3.80 / $1.95
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.5% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.78x Steady since tip
Why Won at Te Rapa over 1200m and has a 1st-up and 2nd-up record that stacks up. Her last two starts were both held up by traffic, so she has been unlucky and could fly.
Roughie: Bramito (No.2) — $13.00 / $4.20
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.4% | Place: 17.8% | Value: 0.84x Steady since tip
Why He's wide from barrier 7 and has to find cover, so he needs the front pair to fight it out. If that happens, he can run on late.
Race 2 – Tauranga Crossing Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Slow pace on the map. Clara Bow from barrier 1 and Tailoress from barrier 11 are the only forward runners, and Tailoress has to work from the outside to get there. Purple Strike sits back from barrier 4, so he will have to come from the rear and hope the race gets run up the middle. The pace is not going to help him.
Punty read: Purple Strike is the bet. He has a second from his only start on the soft, a Tauranga 1200m run last start that was a good effort, and Michael Mc Nab booked. The slow pace is against him, and I'm not hiding that. He has to get the run of the race from the back. Off The Scales is the one I'd watch: a Cambridge Synthetic run of 2nd, 2nd and 3rd gives him a good record on the all-weather. Clara Bow leads the way for the slow run and has the sectional speed.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)
1. Purple Strike (No.10) — $2.50 / $1.05
Bet $10.00 Win, return $25.00
Prob 22.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.57x
Why Second at Tauranga over 1200m last start, and he has the class to sit back and run on if the front pair go too hard. Michael Mc Nab is on him.
2. Off The Scales (No.9) — $4.20 / $1.55
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.8% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.75x
Why A real chance — but at $1.55 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Clara Bow (No.2) — $6.50 / $1.82
Bet Tracked
Prob 12.5% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.81x
Why Leads the way from barrier 1 in a slow race. She ran 10th last start, but she has been wide and had a medical issue, so the form is an excuse.
Roughie: Tailoress (No.5) — $18.00 / $2.88
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.1% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 1.09x
Why Forward from barrier 11 and she has to work to cross. If the slow pace lets her settle and she gets a clean run, she is the one to outrun her price.
Race 3 – Saddlery Warehouse Cambridge & Tauranga Mdn
Race type: Maiden, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with five runners who want the front. Genki from barrier 4 sits handy, and Beau Miller from barrier 1 and Prominere from barrier 10 can cross to challenge. Prominere has to work from a wide draw. Miesha is caught wide from barrier 12 and has to find cover. The shape gives the handy horses a soft run.
Punty read: Genki is my bet, and I'm putting it each way for a reason. He has a 1st-up and 2nd-up record that is a bit light, and his soft record is 5 starts, 0 wins and a third, so he has to show the conditions suit. He was held up and slow-started last time, which is a legitimate excuse. Lydiard Park is the one to watch from the midfield after a slow start last start. Miesha is interesting, she was bumped and hampered twice, and she is up 2kg on the weights.
Top 3 + Roughie ($9.00 pool)
1. Genki (No.1) — $4.00 / $1.51
Bet $9.00 Each Way ($4.50W + $4.50P), collects $24.80 if it wins ($18.00 win + $6.80 place), $6.80 if it only places
Prob 23.9% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.96x
Why Warren Kennedy and L O'sullivan & A Scott have a strong track record together at this track, and the handy spot from barrier 4 suits his run style.
2. Lydiard Park (No.3) — $3.60 / $1.38
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.56x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Prominere (No.5) — $8.50 / $2.38
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.3% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.71x
Why Placed in all three of his soft starts before his last run, and Michael Mc Nab knows how to ride him. He's wide from barrier 10 though, so he needs luck.
Roughie: Jaws (No.6) — $12.00 / $2.68
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.5% | Place: 24.4% | Value: 0.90x
Why Was 3rd at Te Rapa over 1400m, and the midfield run from barrier 5 could work if the leaders get tired.
Race 4 – Super Liquor Greerton Hcp (60)
Race type: Restricted 60, 1580m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Toruk Makto the only leader, uncontested on the map. Del Inquent from barrier 3 is the closest to pressure, so he will be the one dropping in behind the leader. Clew Bay and Erase are both drawn wide and have to work to cross. Winwood and Koro's Princess from the back need cover. The shape gives the stalker a clean sit behind the leader.
Punty read: Del Inquent is the bet. He has nine soft starts with a win, a second and a third, and Michael Mc Nab on board is a good sign. He was bumped and hampered in his last two starts, so he has some bounce coming. Clew Bay is the danger, sitting just off the speed from a wide draw. Zenzero Girl from the back is the value play if the front pair run out of petrol.
Top 3 + Roughie ($7.50 pool)
1. Del Inquent (No.4) — $3.50 / $1.51
Bet $7.50 Win, return $26.25
Prob 14.9% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.52x
Why Stalks the leader from barrier 3, and he has been unlucky with traffic in his last two starts. He's up 4kg for the race, but his record on soft says he can handle it.
2. Clew Bay (No.12) — $4.00 / $1.67
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.9% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.56x
Why A real chance — but at $1.67 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Zenzero Girl (No.9) — $10.00 / $2.60
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.9% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 1.09x
Why Second at Tauranga over 1400m, and the back-marker role from barrier 6 gives her the trail if the leader cooks.
Roughie: Lucan (No.5) — $15.00 / $2.88
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.1% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.92x
Why Track winner with 5 wins from 5 starts... no, one win from five starts at this track. He's been held up in his recent runs, so if the pace collapses he can run late.
Race 5 – Gartshore Construction (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 2100m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with six runners wanting the front, so it will be tactical. Cosmic Pursuit from barrier 12 has to work wide, and Melkor from barrier 10 is also drawn out. Sweet But Psycho from barrier 2 sits back and will be looking for a clean run through the middle. The race is likely to be run from the middle with a final sprint, and that suits the closer.
Punty read: Sweet But Psycho is the banker of the day. He went second at Tauranga over 2100m last start and has 3 wins and 5 seconds from 28 starts, which is the form of a stayer. Michael Mc Nab is on him, and he's the most consistent horse on the card at this trip. She Suits Herself is the danger, a 1 win from 3 record at Tauranga and Chris Hassman on a strike rate of 12.8%. Cosmic Pursuit has the fastest sectional time and runs on at the finish.
Top 3 + Roughie ($6.00 pool)
1. Sweet But Psycho (No.3) — $2.60 / $1.10
Bet $6.00 Win, return $15.60
Prob 29.8% | Place: 58.7% | Value: 0.77x
Why Went second over 2100m last start, and has the stamina to finish the job. He's one of the most reliable runners on the card at this distance.
2. She Suits Herself (No.10) — $7.00 / $2.12
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.5% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.01x
Why A real chance — but at $2.12 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Cosmic Pursuit (No.2) — $6.00 / $1.89
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.1% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.67x
Why Third over 2100m last start with the fastest sectional, and he's a runner who finishes off the race. He's wide from barrier 12 which is the issue.
Roughie: Happy Venture (No.11) — $11.00 / $2.54
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.5% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.60x
Why Ran fourth at Arawa Park over 1950m and has a track win. Slow starts have cost him, so if he jumps well he can get into it late.
Race 6 – Bayleys Mount Maunganui Hcp
Race type: Open, 2100m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Khan Hunter the only leader, uncontested. Gigi from barrier 8 is forward and has to work across. Diomedes from barrier 2 and Overrated from barrier 4 are the chasers. Levakia from barrier 9 sits midfield and has to get the cover, and Above The Clouds from barrier 10 is caught wide. The shape means the midfield runners can get into it.
Punty read: Levakia is my bet, put each way. He was third at Ellerslie over 2100m last start, and he has 5 wins and 3 seconds from 14 starts on soft, which is a strong record. He's wide and has to find cover, but Michael Mc Nab is a good sign. Free Bird from barrier 5 is the danger, a 1st at Ellerslie 1600m last start and a placing in both starts before that. Boxmoss is the one in the mix from the back.
Top 3 + Roughie ($11.00 pool)
1. Levakia (No.3) — $3.50 / $1.32
Bet $11.00 Each Way ($5.50W + $5.50P), collects $26.51 if it wins ($19.25 win + $7.26 place), $7.26 if it only places
Prob 23.0% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.81x
Why Five wins and three seconds from fourteen starts on soft, and he's up 5kg but has the form to handle the weight. He's in a good spot to finish.
2. Free Bird (No.10) — $3.50 / $1.29
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.1% | Place: 46.2% | Value: 0.74x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Boxmoss (No.2) — $4.60 / $1.63
Bet Tracked
Prob 15.5% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 0.71x
Why Six wins from 31 starts with four thirds, and he's a stayer who finishes well at this distance. He's a backmarker from barrier 7.
Roughie: Diomedes (No.4) — $16.00 / $2.84
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.0% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.80x
Why Sectional time is the fastest in the field, and he has a 2nd at Ellerslie 2200m. If the leader runs out of petrol, Diomedes is the one to pounce.
Race 7 – Aztech Signs (Bm65)
Race type: Benchmark 65, 1300m
Map & tempo: Genuine pace with Horrie the only leader, uncontested. Stay Frosty and Lucky Ferrando sit just off the speed, and New Recruit from barrier 7 is drawn wide. Sarti from barrier 2 is the backmarker who needs the leader to fall over. She's A Surprise sits on the speed from barrier 1.
Punty read: There is no selection for this race, as the market has no prices in the data. Sarti is the one who makes the most sense on paper, with 1 win from 4 starts and a 2nd at Te Rapa over 1200m, but I'm not backing a horse without a price. Stay Frosty has a 3-from-5 good record and is the one I'd watch if the field gets a good run.
Top 3 + Roughie
No Bet, no market prices in the feed for this race.
Race 8 – Bayleys Tauranga Hcp
Race type: Open, 1300m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with no outright leader. Khafre from barrier 5 and Jethro Tull from barrier 3 are the likeliest to find the front. Sterling Express from barrier 4 sits midfield and gets a clean run, while The Entertainer from barrier 9 is the one drawn wide. Nigella Lane is caught from barrier 7 and needs cover. The shape gives Sterling Express the run he needs.
Punty read: Sterling Express is the bet, and I'm happy to put the money on him. He has 5 wins from 13 on soft, and he's the banker of the day. He was slow starting last time, which is a legitimate excuse, and Jack Taplin is in form at 15% over his last 100 rides. Twain has the form and the trainer combo to chase, and Jethro Tull is the one to watch on the speed. Nigella Lane is the value play at a longer price.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Sterling Express (No.1) — $3.40 / $1.26
Bet $15.00 Win, return $51.00
Prob 31.2% | Place: 58.3% | Value: 1.06x
Why Five wins from 13 on soft and he's had a strong 1st-up and 2nd-up record. He was slow away last start, which is the only excuse he needs.
2. Twain (No.3) — $4.40 / $1.61
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.62x
Why A real chance — but at $1.61 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Jethro Tull (No.5) — $4.80 / $1.65
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.8% | Place: 36.2% | Value: 0.66x
Why On the speed and gets the trail behind the leaders. He's been bumped and hampered in his last two starts, so he's due a clean run.
Roughie: Nigella Lane (No.4) — $12.00 / $2.68
Bet Tracked
Prob 10.4% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 1.24x
Why Has the fastest sectional in the field and a good record on soft. Caught wide from barrier 7, but if the speed holds up, he can finish strong.
Race 9 – Mills Reef Wines (Bm75)
Race type: Benchmark 75, 1400m
Map & tempo: Moderate pace with four runners who want the front, led by L'aigle Noir from barrier 10. Greenwich from barrier 5, Tiantai from barrier 11 and La Prima Dama from barrier 8 are the others. Hell Island from barrier 17 and Chante Moi from barrier 16 are the back-markers who have to get cover. Tiantai sits handy and is the best-placed runner in the field.
Punty read: Tiantai is the bet, and he's at a short price, so I'm not pretending this is value. He won at Te Rapa over 1300m last start, and his 3 wins from 7 starts on soft tell me he handles it. Michael Mc Nab is on him, which is always a good sign. La Prima Dama is the danger, a 2 wins from 5 starts, and she's the one to beat if Tiantai stumbles. Hell Island from barrier 17 is the one who can run down the field.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Tiantai (No.11) — $5.50 / place tote
Bet $10.50 Win, return $57.75
Prob 15.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 0.84x
Why Three wins from seven starts with a last-start win at Te Rapa, and he's the most reliable horse in a race with some wild cards.
2. La Prima Dama (No.13) — $7.00 / $2.48
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.2% | Place: 29.3% | Value: 0.64x
Why A real chance — but at $2.48 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Hell Island (No.9) — $10.00 / $2.72
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.7% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.77x
Why A win at Ellerslie 1500m and a first-up win at Tauranga 1400m. He's drawn wide from barrier 17, so he needs luck.
Roughie: Andiamo (No.12) — $12.00 / $2.90
Bet Tracked
Prob 7.6% | Place: 24.2% | Value: 0.91x
Why Two wins from six starts and a 1st at Ellerslie 1500m. He's a midfield runner who can run on if the front pair go hard.
SEQUENCE LANES
No pre-built sequence tickets were given for Tauranga today, so no Early Quaddie, Quaddie or Big 6 tickets are printed.
NUGGETS FROM THE TRACK
1 - Gigi's home record
Gigi has 4 wins and 2 seconds from 8 starts at Tauranga, with a 37.5% jockey and trainer combo. He's in R6 and worth knowing about.
2 - Weight warnings in R4
Mister Pucci is 0 from 2 winning at 63 to 64kg, and Mitonic is 0 from 2 at 68 to 69kg. Both are carrying weight the data says they struggle with.
3 - Sweet But Psycho has the stamina to finish
Three wins and five seconds from 28 starts, and he's been placed in his last three runs over 2100m. In a race of stalkers and closers, that's the kind of cheap consistency that makes a banker.
FINAL WORD FROM THE SICKO SANCTUARY
Soft 5 at Tauranga is a place where the form book goes out the window and the horses who have already proven the ground get rewarded. Back the banker, respect the stalkers and don't chase the chaos. Cheers, legends.
