Punty's Punts
Race type: Maiden, 1500m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, with Satin Serenade and Vision In A Dream sitting mid, Waiheke Rose and a couple others pushing closer.
Punty read: Waiheke Rose (No.4) is the one I want on my ticket at Kembla because she's the on-pacer with blinkers on, which usually means they're telling her to be sharper and more professional. With the tempo slow, the leader types can control the rhythm and force the finish to arrive on their terms. Vision In A Dream (No.2) is the smart saver, she's been putting herself in the mix and can slide into the pocket run. Satin Serenade (No.1) has the trackside confidence, but at 1500m in a maiden with a slow tempo, you need to be either on the pace or in the right spot early, and I think No.4 has the cleaner run to the line.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.00 pool)
1. Waiheke Rose (No.4) — $2.35 / $1.17 🏆 WINNER
Bet $10.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$13.50
Prob 27.8% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.14x
Why Blinkers first time, on-pacer map, and the slow tempo makes it easier for her to keep finding.
2. Vision In A Dream (No.2) — $5.00 / $1.65 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.7% | Place: 63.5% | Value: 1.48x
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Satin Serenade (No.1) — $2.90 / $1.25 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.4% | Place: 51.9% | Value: 0.32x
Why Decent effort history, but the price is drifting and the win route feels tougher.
Roughie: Moon Flash (No.8) — $24.00 / $3.70 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.4% | Place: 16.7% | Value: 0.34x
Why If the race turns into a running battle and the speed collapses, she's the one who can swoop wide late.
Race type: Maiden, 1300m
Map & tempo: Slow pace, so the midfield can come into play quickly if they're travelling
Punty read: If you've watched enough maiden sprints, you know the trick. Sometimes it's not about the fastest, it's about the one who can position without spending. No.3 Graffiti Tycoon is the obvious win play here, it's got the early confidence and the barrier helps, so it doesn't have to do gymnastics early. No.8 Glenorchy is the live danger on the speed line if it keeps finding the ground. No.9 The Roaring Sun is there for the trifecta type, it can run on if the race doesn't blow out.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Graffiti Tycoon (No.3) — $1.35 / $1.01 🏆 WINNER
Bet $15.00 Win — ✓ Won, net +$5.25
Prob 56.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.26x
Why Barrier and early position combo, it's set up to pounce rather than to chase.
2. Glenorchy (No.8) — $4.40 / $1.25 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 20.9% | Place: 54.7% | Value: 0.73x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. The Roaring Sun (No.9) — $5.00 / $1.35 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.5% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.08x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Roughie: Adaptation (No.1) — $51.00 / $7.00 🏆 7TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 2.1% | Place: 9.4% | Value: 1.06x
Why Short field, two places, thin divvies — the pool stays on the two bets that earn it. He's on the watch list.
Race type: Class 1, 1600m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, on-pacers can control the tempo and keep them honest.
Punty read: Last Affair (No.5) is the one I want leading into the back end of the day, because he's got the on-pace map and the market clearly respects that. Mayleigh (No.4) is the stalking alternative, and at this distance in a Class 1, that's where the race usually gets decided, who's cruising when everyone else is starting to ask questions. Cap D'ail (No.1) is the rougher for trifecta players, he can hit the line if the leaders don't sprint too hard too soon. Creator Of World (No.3) is the swing, but he needs luck and the race unfolding in his favour.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
1. Last Affair (No.5) — $2.70 / $1.37 🏆 4TH
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 31.2% | Place: 61.5% | Value: 1.03x
Why He's positioned to be first on the bridle and last to stop, the classic on-pacer profile.
2. Mayleigh (No.4) — $3.90 / $1.90 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 25.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.18x
Why Only two places paid in a field this size, and skinny place divvies make savers a mug's game — this is a win-only race. Tracked, not staked.
3. Cap D'ail (No.1) — $6.00 / $2.65 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 21.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.59x
Why His line speed is there, but he needs the tempo to suit a backmarker to find gaps.
Roughie: Creator Of World (No.3) — $10.00 / $3.40 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.6% | Place: 22.3% | Value: 0.77x
Why If the leaders flatten and he gets clear room, he can punch through late like a late subplot.
Race type: Maiden, 1200m
Map & tempo: Slow Pace, but 1200m means the race still turns quickly once they straighten.
Punty read: Brutal Advance (No.1) is the banker-looking maiden because the combination of barrier and map has him sitting around the right part of the race. When the tempo's slow, the on-pacer types get to enjoy the ride, and No.1 looks like he can keep momentum going. Rocks Or Diamonds (No.12) is the value danger, he's got the map to be involved, and with those sharp sectional hints, he can grab a cheque. Bold Bucks (No.6) is in the mix, but the price is a bit messy for a win call. Clinger Power (No.10) is there for upset spots if the race turns into a sprint chaos show.
Top 3 + Roughie ($15.00 pool)
★ PUNTY'S PICK 1. Brutal Advance (No.1) — $3.10 / $1.45 🏆 2ND
Bet $15.00 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$15.00
Prob 40.3% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 1.72x
Why He's got the pace position and the profile to keep kicking, especially on a rail day.
2. Bold Bucks (No.6) — $4.00 / $1.65 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.1% | Place: 59.1% | Value: 0.80x
Why A real chance — but at $1.65 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Rocks Or Diamonds (No.12) — $3.40 / $1.55 🏆 3RD
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.7% | Place: 70.0% | Value: 0.59x
Why He's the right kind of live, but again the win route feels priced to be awkward.
Roughie: Clinger Power (No.10) — $11.00 / $2.80 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 6.9% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.95x
Why If the pace sets up too hard, he can grab a slice late, but it's a conditional run.
Race type: Class 1, 1200m
Map & tempo: Moderate Pace with a bunch of horses on the go, so the lead might not be lonely.
Punty read: This is where Fitzclarence (No.2) looks like the real deal. He's on-pacer mapped and the setup suggests he can control his own tempo, and at 1200m that matters a lot when rain risk is hanging around. Lego Master (No.4) is the obvious exacta/trifecta helper with his on-pace run style. Our Vinny (No.3) can be right there and might sneak into the placings with a good run. Shuda Known (No.8) is the market favourite, but I'm not automatically siding with the short price when the value spine is screaming from No.2.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Fitzclarence (No.2) — $5.50 / $2.15 🏆 8TH
Bet $10.50 Each Way ($5.25W + $5.25P) — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 19.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 1.28x
Why The on-pace map and the way he's been running says he can stay in the contest longer than the rest.
2. Shuda Known (No.8) — $2.80 / $1.32 🏆 WINNER
Bet Tracked
Prob 17.6% | Place: 51.7% | Value: 0.57x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Lego Master (No.4) — $6.00 / $2.15 🏆 6TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 14.3% | Place: 52.9% | Value: 1.04x
Why Live on form and map, but I'm keeping the money with the main value play.
Roughie: I'm A Beaut (No.7) — $11.00 / $3.20 🏆 12TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 5.3% | Place: 24.1% | Value: 0.97x
Why Needs the pace to stay honest and for him to get clear run, then he's a sneaky late threat.
Race type: Class 1, 1000m
Map & tempo: Hot Pace, this is sprint-physics, whoever's still cruising at the 150m line wins the argument.
Punty read: Yamashita (No.7) is the value angle with the right kind of position, midfield and thereabouts, where she can draw a line through the pack when they start to stretch. Performance (No.1) is the danger because she maps to lead, and leaders in 1000m can absolutely steal momentum if they get clear air. Portico (No.4) is the on-pacer/stalker type that keeps showing up in the finish. Seductra (No.5) and Artemex (No.6) are the other wobble factors, but for me this is the one to go in with a plan, because 1000m races punish indecision.
Top 3 + Roughie ($10.50 pool)
1. Yamashita (No.7) — $4.20 / $1.65 🏆 5TH
Bet $10.50 Win — ✗ Lost, net -$10.50
Prob 19.5% | Place: 46.7% | Value: 1.00x
Why Midfield map with sprint punch, and she looks like the one who makes the pack regret everything.
2. Performance (No.1) — $4.80 / $1.75 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 16.3% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.98x
Why A real chance — but at $1.75 the place the numbers don't give me enough edge to insure with. Watching, not betting.
3. Isn't She Autumn (No.8) — $5.50 / $1.95 🏆 9TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 13.6% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.90x
Why She's in it from the front, but I don't love the value on the win side today.
Roughie: Artemex (No.6) — $9.00 / $2.55 🏆 2ND
Bet Tracked
Prob 8.7% | Place: 32.7% | Value: 0.97x
Why If the leaders weaken and the midfield get running room, he can power into a cheque.
Race type: Benchmark 64, 1400m
Map & tempo: Genuine Pace, so the winner is often the one who can hold form through the turn.
Punty read: Gridlock (No.14) is my pick because the run style fits a rail day, he's got the momentum and the class to keep working through. Superata (No.4) is the big threat, and with that market price it feels like he's been targeted for a reason. Star Minerva (No.11) is the value spine you respect, because she can be right there when the tempo is honest. Me Me (No.9) and Crathie Kirk (No.7) can fill spots if the top ones get shuffled around, but Gridlock is the one I want to be anchored on.
Top 3 + Roughie ($13.00 pool)
1. Gridlock (No.14) — $4.50 / $1.85 🏆 WINNER
Bet $13.00 Each Way ($6.50W + $6.50P) — ✓ Won, net +$28.27
Prob 19.6% | Place: 58.2% | Value: 1.10x
Why He's mapped midfield to keep his options, and he looks like the one who holds up the finish.
2. Superata (No.4) — $4.00 / $1.75 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 19.2% | Place: 46.1% | Value: 0.97x
Why The top pick's each-way already covers the place angle here — doubling up is paying twice for the same insurance. Tracked instead.
3. Star Minerva (No.11) — $11.00 / $3.30 🏆 UNPLACED
Bet Tracked
Prob 11.4% | Place: 38.8% | Value: 1.55x
Why The price feels usable and she should be in the finish, just not my saver slot.
Roughie: Crathie Kirk (No.7) — $10.00 / $3.10 🏆 4TH
Bet Tracked
Prob 9.3% | Place: 34.1% | Value: 1.16x
Why If the pace thins and the midfield keeps crawling, he's a live place and maybe a cheeky win.
That's the ticket as I struck it — the legs below are exactly what ran, no rewriting history.
Smart: 1,12,6,10 / 4,8,2,7 / 7,8,1,6 / 14,4,11,7 (256 combos x $0.20 = $50.00) -- 20% flexi
The day's multi leans on three win legs across the card.
1 - Graffiti Tycoon (Race 2, No.3)✓ Won — $1.73
2 - Last Affair (Race 3, No.5)✗ — $2.64
3 - Brutal Advance (Race 4, No.1)✗ — $2.20
Meeting Stats
Selections
Punty's Early Mail
Rightio Loose Units, Kembla Grange today is one of those "follow the speed, don't get cute" cards, with the rail True and the track sitting Good 4 like a bloke pretending he has his life together. Mostly sunny right now, but the rain risk is spicy, so expect a couple of runners to either get brave late, or straight up get swallowed when the track changes its mind.
MEET SNAPSHOT
Track: Kembla Grange, 7 race card (1200m to 1600m)
Rail: True
Official going: Good 4 (expected to play True Good, holding but with a late-muck risk if the sky decides to tattle)
Weather: Mostly sunny, 24C, humidity 62%, wind 13km/h ENE (watch for Rain risk: 80%+ chance at 05:00)
Early lane guess: The jumpiest thing you can do is back horses that can get into their race early, because this is a rail track and the leaders get every opportunity to look good.
Tempo profile: Slow to moderate early, then the sprints and 1000m stuff turns into a speed chess game.
Jockeys to follow:
Keagan Latham: He's on a stack of rides and he's the kind of rider who actually stays calm when the race gets chaotic.
Rory Hutchings: Good tempo reader, and he looks well placed to lift when the gap appears.
Jean Van Overmeire: When she's steering a class dropper, she can make it look easy from the first turn.
Stables to respect:
C J Waller (3 runners): Quick to place horses where they can hit a seam, and this bloke knows how to have one ready on the day.
Mitchell Beer & George Carpenter (4 runners): They'll have you thinking you're clever, then the money earner puts the brakes on your plan.
G Ryan & S Alexiou (3 runners): When their horses map midfield, they're often there to pounce, not just to make up numbers.
Punty's take: This meeting shapes like a "pace decides the story" gig, especially with the rail True and Good 4 holding it together. When the map says LEADER or ON-PACE, that's your cue to stop overthinking and get on, because Kembla can punish wide, stalled trips the moment the rain nibbles the edges. You'll see it in the 1200s and 1400s, then the 1000m makes it all personal.
Race 1 sets up a classic maiden chess match. Waiheke Rose looks like the one that gets an easy run and pounces, while Vision In A Dream is the sort that can loop into the finish without needing heroics. Then Race 2 is where you want your spine: Graffiti Tycoon is the clear class angle, and you want him in the multi even if you swear you're "just playing it sensible".
The chaos merchants start showing themselves from Race 4 onwards. Brutal Advance looks like the speed proof, Last Affair is the same idea but more classy, and Yamashita in the 1000m is the type that makes a crowd out of a line of horses. If rain hits later, keep an eye on who's already travelling, because the ones who need luck will suddenly start begging for it.
What it means for you: My game plan is simple, don't get cute early. In the races where the leader and the on-pacer are likely to control position, I'm backing them to do the job. In the open-ish spots, I'm using the top three and then throwing in one roughie that has a legitimate path to the win, not just "priced for a miracle".
If you're betting smart, you get aggressive in the races with the most obvious map fit: Race 1, Race 3, Race 4 and Race 6. If you're chasing dividends, you go wider in the quaddie lanes from R4 to R7 because those legs are the ones most likely to throw you a curveball, plus that's where the early-morning rain risk starts to matter.
